Abstract:
Upon hearing that baptism should be administered by immersion while invoking the name of Jesus at the Arroyo Seco camp meeting of 1913, one minister expressed concern that this practice would associate the early pentecostal movement with a man named Sykes. Who Sykes was has been the matter of some mystery, but this research based on archival holdings and newspapers suggests that it was Joshua Sykes, a pacifist preacher who lived in both Los Angeles and the Bay Area. Sykes represents Progressive era controversies in religion and in pacifism, and his history explains some of the early resistance to adopting this particular form of baptism.

Abstract:
By taking seriously an Adornian suggestion, according to which art should be understood as something that “has become what it is”, the main purpose of this essay is to provide an essential reconstruction of Adorno’s aesthetic program. The latter places art within a curve, or constellation, that has the experience of the “shudder” as its anthropological beginning and an ending corresponding to the current context, characterized by the widespread diffusion of the aesthetic dimension (thanks to the “logic” of fashion). Our reconstruction aims to suggest that critical theory is fatally inclined towards this aesthetic constellation as a whole, and therefore it deserves today special attention by virtue of a parallelism with the aestheticizing developments of late-capitalism. As a consequence, Adorno may be considered a (critical) philosopher of globalization, insofar as his theory is aesthetic in a pregnant sense. His aesthetic constellation might in fact encompass the constitutive elements, or at least some essential elements, which are useful to bring the “aesthetic form of life” to the fore.

Abstract:
Increasing environmental awareness has driven a lot of research to look into various environmentally friendly lubricants which can replace more conventional mineral oil based lubricants. This is true in particular for marine and hydropower applications where the risk of lubricant leakage can be damaging to the local environment. Glycerol is an organic compound produced as a byproduct when producing Biodiesel. It is environmentally friendly and has been used by the pharmaceutical and food industries for a long time. Recent research has shown that glycerol has very good tribological properties and can be used as a lubricant in some applications. However, its high viscosity and high static friction are disadvantageous and needs improvement. The purpose of this study is to investigate possible surface active environmentally adapted additives in glycerol and water solutions. 14 additives have been selected for testing and were tested in a pin-on-disc start-stop friction test to see their effect on the static and dynamic friction coefficients. From these 14 additives two were selected due to their superior performance and were further studied. The effect of concentration of water and additive in glycerol was also investigated using the same test conditions. A phosphor based additive has been found to be the best performing.

Abstract:
Over the past decade vehicle judder caused by Disc Thickness Variation (DTV) has become of major concern to automobile manufacturers worldwide. Judder is usually perceived by the driver as minor to severe vibrations transferred through the chassis during braking [1-9]. In this research, DTV is investigated via the use of a Smart Brake Pad (SBP). The SBP is a tool that will enable engineers to better understand the processes which occur in the harsh and confined environment that exists between the brake pad and disc whilst braking. It is also a tool that will enable engineers to better understand the causes of DTV and stick-slip the initiators of low and high frequency vibration in motor vehicle brakes. Furthermore, the technology can equally be used to solve many other still remaining mysteries in automotive, aerospace, rail or anywhere where two surfaces may come in contact. The SBP consists of sensors embedded into an automotive brake pad enabling it to measure pressure between the brake pad and disc whilst braking. The two sensor technologies investigated were Thick Film (TF) and Fibre Optic (FO) technologies. Each type was tested individually using a Material Testing System (MTS) at room and elevated temperatures. The chosen SBP was then successfully tested in simulated driving conditions. A preliminary mathematical model was developed and tested for the TF sensor and a novel Finite Element Analysis (FEA) model for the FO sensor. A new method called the Total Expected Error (TEE) method was also developed to simplify the sensor specification process to ensure consistent comparisons are made between sensors. Most importantly, our achievement will lead to improved comfort levels for the motorist.

Kaas, Garrett Anthony. "Genetic analysis of Shudderer, the lithium-responsive neurological mutant of Drosophila melanogaster." Diss., University of Iowa, 2010. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/828.

Full text
Abstract:
Lithium has been used for more than 50 years as a primary therapy for bipolar affective disorder (BPD) and has proven highly effective for both acute and long-term phases of the disease. Unfortunately, the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the mood-stabilizing action of lithium for the treatment of BPD remains largely unknown. In an effort towards understanding the complexities of lithium's action in the nervous system, I have utilized the Drosophila neurological mutant Shudderer (Shu). Previous findings have suggested that the adult Shu phenotypes may be improved by providing a diet containing millimolar concentrations of lithium. Using well-established genetic techniques and behavioral paradigms I thoroughly characterized the Shu mutant phenotypes. I found that the mutant displays morphological and behavioral abnormalities indicative of dysregulated neuronal excitability that include: down-turning wings and indented dorsal thorax, defects in negative geotaxis, deficits in locomotion, abnormal sleep architecture and unusual patterns of leg-shaking behaviors upon recovery of ether anesthetics. Furthermore, I confirmed that lithium was able to significantly improve many aspects of Shu behaviors. Recombination-based mutation mapping in Shu revealed that the genetic lesion lies somewhere within the gene CG9907, which encodes the voltage-gated sodium channel á-subunit paralytic (para). Subsequent genetic experiments using para hypomorphic mutant alleles as well as a UAS-RNAi/GAL4 system showed that a reduction in sodium channel levels resulted in a drastic improvement of the mutant defects. Together, these data suggest that the lithium-responsive Shu mutant is likely a gain-of-function allele of para. Sequencing of the entire para coding region identified a missense mutation in a highly conserved region of the para coding sequence, in transmembrane segment S2 of homology domain III ((M1350I). To date, this is the first known discovery of a sodium channel mutant allele in Drosophila which causes hyperactivity. These data suggest that the Shu phenotypes are somehow caused by an increase in sodium channel activation. Lastly, I identified a number of genes likely to functionally interact with the Shu mutation. Of note, the Ca2+/calmodulin-activated Ser/Thr protein phosphatase alpha subunit gene CanA-14F is up-regulated in Shu and reduction of its activity suppresses the mutant phenotypes. Furthermore, a large percentage of genes encoding anti-microbial peptides (AMP) were also significantly up-regulated in Shu, possibly acting downstream of CanA-14F. A genetic deficiency screen looking for genes that alter the Shu phenotypes has identified that the gene Glutathione S-transferase S1 (Gsts1) suppresses the morphological and behavioral defects in the lithium-responsive mutant. Overall, these genes will help decipher how the gain-of-function sodium channel Shu mutation alters nervous system function. In addition, they will shed light on those mechanisms responsible for lithium's mood-stabilizing effects in the brain.

Chen, Hung-Lin. "Environmental and genetic modifiers of Shudderer, a Drosophila voltage-gated sodium channel mutant." Diss., University of Iowa, 2016. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/2055.

Abstract:
There is a complex relationship between genetic mutations and their phenotypic expression. Two patients who carry the exactly same disease-causing mutation can have drastically different severity in disease symptoms. Such phenotypic variations may be due to environmental factors, such as diet, stress and temperature, as well as genetic variations, including single nucleotide polymorphisms and copy number variations in other loci. From a clinical point of view, the environmental and genetic factors that modify phenotypic severity are important because, even when we cannot correct the original mutations, it may be able to reduce the burden of genetically inherited disorders by manipulating these modifiers. To study environmental and genetic modifiers, we used Shudderer (Shu), a Drosophila mutant for the voltage-gated sodium (Nav) channel gene, as an experimental model. Nav channels are essential for generation and propagation of action potentials in neurons. Reflecting their functional importance in neural function, mutations in the Nav channel genes are associated with a variety of human neurological disorders. Shu mutants display severe behavioral defects (e.g., spontaneous jerking and heat-induced seizures) and morphological abnormalities (e.g., indented thorax and down-turned wings). The goal of this study was to identify and characterize the environmental and genetic factors that modify behavioral and morphological phenotypes of Shu mutants. For environmental modifiers, we serendipitously discovered that a diet supplemented with milk dramatically reduces the Shu phenotypes. To identify genetic modifiers, we took two independent approaches, microarray analysis and unbiased forward genetic modifier screening. We found that reduction of Gadd45 or GstS1 activity leads to suppression of the Shu phenotypes to different degrees. Intriguingly, the effects of these genetic and environmental modifiers apparently converge into enhancement of the GABAergic inhibitory system. Because the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the basic neurobiological processes are highly conserved between flies and humans, our findings are expected to provide fundamental insights into genetic and environmental modifiers for human Nav channel gene mutations, leading to the future development of novel strategies for preventing and treating disorders caused by dysfunctional Navchannels.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the attitudes and responses of Canadians to the Nazis’ antisemitism during the early years of the Third Reich, using Vancouver and the Vancouver press as a point of focus. In addition to providing greater understanding of the public response to Nazi Germany during this period, this research also carries larger implications regarding how attitudes towards the Third Reich may reflect broader notions of Canadian identity and Canadian Jewish identity. In particular, this study demonstrates that responses to Nazi Germany were fundamentally shaped by Canada’s longstanding ties to Great Britain. Vancouverites shaped their response to the Nazis from a pro-British, anti-fascist standpoint, rejecting the Nazis’ antisemitism as symbolic of the barbarity of fascism itself. Because their condemnation stemmed from this anti-fascist position, Vancouverites did not have to reconcile their opposition to the Nazis with their own racism. Vancouver Jewry, however, were forced to lead a schizophrenic existence, caught between their ethnic obligations and their identity as Canadian citizens. Within the community, Canadian Jews expressed fears about the pervasive antisemitism in Canada and upheld the persecution of their brethren in Nazi Germany as a possible portent of their own future; outwardly, though, Canadian Jewry expressed a confident Canadianness and ignored the problem of domestic antisemitism, ensuring that their appeals for public and government support were visibly rooted in an obligation to intervene in Germany not as Jews, but as Canadians defending basic democratic principles.

Abstract:
Neurological disorders, such as epilepsy, often result from inherited or newly acquired genetic mutations. However, individuals possessing the exact same disease-causing mutations can exhibit dramatic differences in the severity of their symptoms. These differences can be explained in part by environmental factors, such as the microbes in our gut, that play an important role in the manifestation of disease symptoms. Within the last decade, microbes living in the gut have established themselves as an environmental factor with profound effects on our health and well-being. Of special interest is the relationship between the gut microbiota and neurological disease. The goal of my thesis was to: 1) characterize the gut microbiota composition and 2) understand how the gut microbiota modulates seizure-like behavior using Shudderer, a fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) model of epilepsy. Shudderer flies possess a mutation in the voltage-gated sodium channel gene and display seizure-like behavioral abnormalities including spontaneous tremors and heat-induced seizures. We identified differences in the microbial composition of the gut microbiota between Shudderer and control (healthy) flies. We also found that by removing the gut microbiota we could improve seizure-like behavior of Shudderer flies as well as another Drosophila mutant harboring a similar genetic mutation. Together, these findings provide evidence that a bidirectional interaction exists between the gut microbiota and neurological function. Since the molecular and cellular mechanisms controlling basic biological processes are highly conserved between fruit flies and humans, these findings are expected to be applicable to mammalian systems, including humans, and may lead to the future development of novel therapeutics to treat epilepsy and other neurological disorders.

Until recently the Sub-Saharan manuscripts have been inaccessible and thus include many major works in numerous fields. This thesis deals with two such works in the qreq of lexicography and grammar, namly: Iḍā’at al-Uḍmūs wa Riyāḍat al-Nufūs min Isṭilāḥ Ṣāḥib al-Qāmūs d’Aḥmed b. ‘Abd al-‘Azīz b. al-Rashīd al-Sijlmāsi, al-Mālikī (1761), which is also a commentary on the methodology of the book al-Qāmūs al-Muḥīṭ; and al-Qāmūs al-Muḥīṭ ; et de : Shifā’ al-Ṣudūr fī Ḥalli alfāẓ al-Shudhūr de Muḥammad b. ‘Abd al-Mun‘im Schams al-Din al-Jawjarī al-Shāfi’ al-Miṣrī (1484) which is also a commentary, dealing with the famous book of grammar by Ibn Hishām: Shudhūr al-Dhahab.This treatment of these manuscripts involved the making a scientific edition to provide a ready to read text, with the provion of vocalization, punctuation, critical apparatus and typography with the purpose not giving an image of these manuscripts, but to transforming them into a book. This thesis has scrutinized the variations between three copies of the book: Iḍā'at al-Uḍmūs and two copies of the book Shifā’ al-Ṣudūr in order to restore the texts; it has mentioned the errors encounred, traced the sources and made comments to clarify some passages by referring to a varied and plentiful bibliography

Abstract:
The study of the relationship between Hindu nationalism and Hindu activist traditions of seva (selfless service) has been principally organised into three approaches: firstly, the instrumentalist deployment of the practice, secondly, the political appropriation of traditions of seva, and thirdly, that these related associational spaces are internally homogenous and distinct from alternative ‘legitimate’ religious arenas. These frameworks largely reflect approaches to Hindu nationalism which place emphasis on its forms of political statecraft and relationship to spectacular violence. These approaches raise manifold concerns. This thesis retheorizes the relationship between Hindu nationalism and seva with reference to primary and secondary sources, together with field research in the seva projects of the Vanavasi Kalyan Kendra (VKK), a Hindu nationalist association. Through deploying a reworked understanding of Fraser’s (1990) approach to associational space and Butler’s (1993, 2007) theorisation of performative acts and subject formation, this thesis contributes to rethinking Hindu nationalism and seva. I demonstrate firstly that the colonial encounter worked to produce a series of social imaginaries which were drawn upon to transform traditions of seva. Through their articulation in shared religious languages, practices of seva were productive of porously structured Hindu activist spaces in which the tradition was contested with regard to ‘radical’ and ‘orthodox’ orientations to Hinduism’s boundaries. Increasingly, articulations of seva which invoked a sangathanist ‘orthodoxy’ came to gain hegemony in Hindu activist arenas. This influenced the early and irregular Hindu nationalist practices of seva. Fractures in Hindu nationalist articulations developed as a result of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s (RSS) sangathanist organisational idioms, allowing the association to inscribe its practices with pro-active meanings. In the post-independence period the alternative arenas of Hindu nationalist seva projects expanded greatly, a point evident in the degrees of dialogue between the Sangh and the sarvodaya movement. The importance of porous associational boundaries is further demonstrated through noting how engagement in visibilized arenas of popular Hindu religiosity worked to both broaden the fields of reference and vernacularize Hindu nationalist practices of seva. With reference to field research, I demonstrate that central to the expansion of the VKK’s arenas of service into spaces associated with Ayurvedic care is the incorporation of both refocused and transgressive practices. In the educational projects of the VKK, I note how seva works to inscribe daily practices of hygiene, the singing of bhajans and daily assemblies with Hindu nationalist meanings, and so works to regulate conduct through the formation of an ‘ethical Hindu self’. However, arenas of seva are also a location where we can witness subjects negotiating power. I demonstrate this through examining how participants in the VKK’s rural development projects rearticulate Othering practices of seva, with actors using the discourse to position themselves as active subjects, break gendered restrictions on public space, and advance an ‘ethically Hindu’ grounded claim on development and critique of power. This work illustrates that far from being of inconsequence to the circulation of Hindu nationalist identities, alternative arenas of seva operate as spaces where discourses are performatively enacted, refocused, transgressed and rearticulated. These acts contribute to the consolidation and disturbance of Hindu nationalist subject formations.

Abstract:
This chapter attempts to understand how Turner had arrived in his decision to rebel—and thus, to kill—and what gave him the conviction to see the enterprise through. The Confessions contains little information regarding that aspect of Turner's thought, though it does provide a few clues. The chapter shows that the Turner whose invisible decision exists in the text's cleft is not a tragic hero. Everything that Turner has revealed of himself in the first part of The Confessions underlines not tragic heroism, but faith. But Turner was no gloomy fanatic, according to this chapter, which goes on to describe Turner as the “knight of faith” embodied in the philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard.

Abstract:
A wet clutch is an integral part of the electronically controlled limited slip differential (eLSD) [1]. In this study, an eLSD model is constructed based on Deur et al.’s dynamic wet clutch model [2]. First the eLSD model including key dynamic equations and parameter values is discussed. The main culprits of clutch shudder include the negative slope of friction coefficient vs. slip speed curve, which is often caused by oil oxidation due to heat or an improper amount of friction modifier among others, and glazing of the friction linings [3,4]. In the second part, consequences of improper lubrication and glazed friction material during launch control of a vehicle equipped with eLSD will be studied based on simulations with lubrication data provided in [3]. The simulation results show that the combined effects of oxidized ATF and glazed friction material can cause clutch shudder.
