Merlin, Monica. "The late Ming courtesan Ma Shouzhen (1548-1604) : visual culture, gender and self-fashioning in the Nanjing pleasure quarter." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2013. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:0da584bf-16fc-4372-8a1b-b97afd3bcf8a.

Full text
Abstract:
Ma Shouzhen (1548-1604) was a cultured courtesan who lived in the famous pleasure quarter along the Qinhuai River in Nanjing, the southern capital of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). She was talented in dance and music, painting and poetry, and surprisingly for her time, she was also a playwright. Although she was a celebrity of the prolific Nanjing cultural milieu and there is a good corpus of extant material by and about her, the particular contribution of Ma Shouzhen - her character and her work - have been marginalised, or even neglected, by the previous scholarship. This thesis is a cross-disciplinary study of Ma Shouzhen and is the first in-depth scholarly investigation into the entirety of her activities. It employs material and methods traditionally pertaining to the disciplines of sinology, history, art history, literary and drama studies. The thesis has a dual aim: first, to provide a nuanced understanding of the courtesan, her cultural production and social practice; second, to reclaim the agency and legacy of her character within the cultural milieu of late Ming Nanjing and beyond. These aims will be achieved through two main research objectives: (1) recovering and re-evaluating visual and written sources by and about the courtesan; (2) investigating those sources in order to comprehend her modes of self-representation and strategies of self-fashioning, analysed especially through the lens of gender. The main body of the thesis is composed of an introduction, five core chapters, and an epilogue; the chapters are structured so as to provide as complete a picture of Ma Shouzhen as possible. Chapter Two explores the space of the pleasure quarter, Ma’s biography and its entwinement within the complexities of the historical moment. Chapter Three focuses on her painting, Chapter Four considers her poetry, and Chapter Five explores her theatre practice; Chapter Six extends the investigation to focus on the construction of Ma’s historical character in later decades. In its content and aims, this thesis contributes to women’s and gender history, as well as to studies in visual culture and literature.

Abstract:
History
Ph.D.
This dissertation re-examines the history of the American Liberty League, building upon observations in recent works by Kimberly Phillips-Fein and David Farber that trace the origins of the modern American conservative political movement back to the reaction against the New Deal programs implemented by Franklin Roosevelt. The Liberty League, it is argued here, established a tradition of what I describe as Constitutional conservatism. The Liberty League, established in 1934 with the expressed purpose of "upholding the Constitution," represented the most forceful and coherent contemporary resistance against a trend toward centralization of power in the federal government and the executive branch that took shape during the Progressive Era and was cemented by the New Deal. Historians writing about conservatism in the the U.S. have most often highlighted other explanations for the motivations underpinning the movement, most notably the "racial backlash" thesis, but a theme of Constitutional conservatism can be traced through many of the conservative political organizations that have emerged in the United States since the demise of the Liberty League in 1936. The first chapter discusses the origins of the Liberty League, which to a considerable extent evolved out of the Association Against the Prohibition Movement. In addition to their shared focus on Constitutional issues, the two organizations utilized the same tactics and showed considerable overlap in terms of membership, leadership and financial backing. Leaders of the organization, discussed in a separate chapter, included Jouett Shouse, William Stayton, Al Smith, Raoul Desvernine, along with a number of wealthy industrialists that provided financial backing, including Pierre du Pont, his brother Irénée du Pont, John Raskob and E. F. Hutton. Further chapters examine the activities of the local and state branches of the Liberty League, the League's attempts to coordinate efforts with other organizations professing a desire for upholding the Constitution and analysis of the publications produced and distributed by the Liberty League. While the organization was funded largely by a small group of wealthy individuals with a vested interest in protecting their vast fortunes, the Liberty League devoted itself in practice to arguing in favor of the more strict interpretation of the Constitution that had largely prevailed in the United States before the New Deal era. Of course, the League failed utterly to convince the electorate, as evidenced by the overwhelming electoral triumph achieved by President Roosevelt in 1936, but it's relentless attempts to highlight the perceived excesses of the New Deal helped fill the void left by the virtual absence of any meaningful Republican opposition, perhaps helping to place some limits on the extent of the New Deal and laying the ground work for future generations of conservatives that continue to draw on the theme of Constitutional conservatism in their efforts to turn back some of the advances made by proponents of a more activist federal government during the Twentieth Century.

Abstract:
This thesis examines narratives of the events called ”The War of Religion in Kvistbro”, a violent turmoil that erupted in Närke, Sweden 1843. The events involved persons connected to the Shouter Movement, a pietist inspired revivalist movement, and governmental officials who were ordered to arrest a preacher.A narrative analysis based on a model inspired by Labov and Chatman, is used for examining contemporary local newspaper Nerikes Allehanda's and the revivalist historian E. J.Ekman's narrations of the events. The theoretical framework of this thesis is founded on Charles Tilly's theory of collective violence, and James C Scott's theories of hidden transcripts and weapons of the weak. The results of the analysis indicates that there are three main understandings of the events within the empiric material: a religious framing, a medical framing, and a socio-political reading. The socio-political reading of the narratives implies that the concepts medicine as control, social antagonism, and gender-coded aspects of conflict, emerge from the material.

Abrassart, Sophie. "Anatomie de l'épaule : implications en chirurgie." Thesis, Paris 11, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA113002.

Full text
Abstract:
I would like to make a practical thesis. Shoulder surgery is growing and growing as the population is ageing and people is doing more and more sports activities. A lot of technical progress were done but there are still a lot of surgical complications. On the other way some very old anatomical ideas are still alive. I want to see with the actual knowledge, if some surgical complications could be explained by anatomy. Subacromial pathology and bone quality remain the two mainproblems of shoulder surgery and pathology. That’s what had suggested to me this study about the shoulder. I was supposed to analyze glenoid bone first .The aim was to know more about arterial supply of glenoid. That was my firststudy (article 1). Then, I was interested in glenoid bone quality. And the second study had appeared. (article 2). During the shoulder dissection, I was looking for the fascia delto-trapezoidal which I didn’t found as described in books. It was my third study. (article 3). Going on I found the coraco-acromial ligament and I was surprised to see the constant portion under the acromial process. And that gave me the idea for the fourth study. (article 4).As I had discovered the very interesting technique of micro-Ct densitometry, I would like to apply it to the humeral head bone. There was the fifth study. (article 5)But, I want to know more and more about bone quality and I went on with the greater tuberosity and especially the area ofsupraspinatus insertion. The insertion and the sub-chondral bone were analyzed. There’s the last but not least study!(article 6). I was really interested in supraspinatus muscle and tendon and I want to follow the course of the muscle as the zone of conflict. I was the subject of study in life as I went through RMI . The muscle was reconstructed as finite element. Then it was possible to describe the zone of conflict with the supraspinatus. Here’s the seventh article. (article 7)

In Shoufeng Creek watershed, the properties of steep channel slope and fragmented geological condition associated with the frequently occurrence of typhoon and rainstorm, usually result in a lot of debris cones moving downstream by torrential river. This frequently happened activity of scour and fill threaten people who live in downstream area very much. In order to understand the variation of scour and fill in channel bed and resulting sediment discharge, the bed-load transport models of Ho-Huang、Schoklitsch、Ho、Meyer Peter and M ller were used to analyze in this study. Associated with surveying data in Shoufeng Creek from 1993 to 1994,this study uses t-test at 1% critical region,to get the following results: 1、With the same flow condition,Ho-Huang's calculated river-bed elevation showed nonsignificant result in scour zone and all of models in this study also showed nonsignificant result in deposit zone. 2、With the same flow condition,Ho's calculated sediment discharge showed nonsignificant result and all of models in this study also showed nonsignificant result in deposit zone. 3、With different flow condition, all of models in this study calculating river-bed elevation or sediment discharge showed nonsignificant result in both of scour and deposit zones.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the riverbed variation under the influence of riverbed material particle size, section erosion and deposition, river width, natural events, and man-made events. The study area is Shoufeng River, which is one of the main tributaries of the Hualien River. Analysing the Field investigation data and compare to the theory. Conclusions are as follows: 1.If the riverbed material is only affected by the tractive force, the particle size of the riverbed material tend to be smaller and smaller from upstream to downstream. However, if also affected by the landslide, tributary inflow or other factors at the same time, this phenomenon is less obvious. 2.Landslide will cause riverbed deposition, slope steepening, increase sediment discharge and is likely to make the riverbed material particle size smaller. After a period of time, fine sediment is transported to downstream, riverbed erosion kept happening, gentle the slope, and decrease the sediment discharge. 3.Dam building will decrease the average slope and adjustment the section slopes of upstream, lead to sediment discharge decreasing. 4.If choking happend when flow pass through the narrow section, in supercritical flow condition, the erosion is likely to happen in upstream, and deposition is likely to happen in downstream of the section. In subcritical flow condition, the deposition is likely to happen in upstream, and erosion is likely to happen in downstream of the section.

On Zhang Shoulin 's "Six Versions of Poetry" and "Three hundred Studies". The Book of Songs in the Republic of China in the "Book of Songs" in the field of research, it is worth a visit. Under the influence of the West and modernization, these scholars have to make changes in the environment. The traditional poetic classics is divided into three categories: exegetical, textual research and justice. In the field of "The Book of Songs", the study of the poetics of the Republic of China advocates scientific theory and emancipates the mind. Through the movement of the "preface" in the early years of the Republic of China, the Book of Songs changed from the sacred and inviolable form of "biblical" to "the first book of Chinese mass literature", which was separated from the atmosphere of political education in traditional society People can comment on "civic literature". In the current process of manufacturing vulcanized shoes, the rubber parts are separately made before combing into the shoes body followed by a plurality of steps in the end forming stage then are sent to the heating tank to be shaped at a high temperature and a high pressure, which is complicated and labor-intensive. Therefore, in this paper, it will be discussed how to design a mold that achieves the online output level by first spraying these rubber parts in an injection machine integrally, and allowing them exiting the machine directly after the injection is completed, finally pressurize and heating the outside to wait for the completion of vulcanization. In this mold design, the concept is to shoot by the plastic three-plate mold, and the core is divided into upper and lower molds by the side line splitting, wherein the inclined pin drives the slider to avoid the outer barb portion. The first section is opened when the front head is retracted and the second section will be opened to separate the upper and lower dies. The relevant parameters of the injection machine are calculated to verify the feasibility of the design by Moldflow. The Moldflow mold flow analysis verifies the research results, and shows that the flow balance analysis of the mold design results is based on the calculated parameters. The flow balance of the left and right finished products is equalized and the time difference between the front and rear ends is less than 0.5 second. The exhaust and package analysis is also verified on the front. Although there will be a small part of the toe cap portion but, the exhaust gap will be solved by using the slider gap, and the calculated injection machine parameters will be consistent with the analysis results.

Feng-Tien community in Shoufeng township, Hualien County is Japan immigrant village in Japanese era, but all the Japanese were taken back to Japan after WWⅡ. There are about three-four hakka residents here now. The cultural landscapes of Feng-Tien Community which experienced different nationalities, different cultural systems are especial and worthy to research.. The study tries to “read” landscape as text through to realize the history of Feng-Tien Community first. Through finding out “what happened”, ”what changed” on the land, and their historical context , we can even interpret the meanings hide behind the cultural landscape. Feng-Tien Community was a village planned by Japanese government, the scheme of Feng-Tien immigrant village and temple revealed the spirit of Japan that learned both Western modernism and Chinese feng shui. After the Japanese colonial period, Taiwanese who moved here were not used to living in Japanese-style house, therefore they might change or to get used to the space. It is battlefield for ideology. Until 60’s, because of jade and watermelon, residents in Feng-Tien Community were well-to-do, and enabled to repair old house, or even purchase a new one. Cultural landscapes are the result of space production. So landscape transition are the result of process of space production and reproduction. At last, the study attempt to use Lefebvre’s Trialectics to decode process of space production and reproduction in Feng-Tien Community.

The purpose of this study is to explore the implementation of green school through a case study of Shoufeng Elementary School. Interview, document collection and field observation are employed in order to collect related data . Through purposive sampling, major participants of the green school development are selected for in-depth interviews, which are analyzed in conjunction with documents collected and records of field observation. Major findings are as follows: 1.Longitudinal development of Shoufeng Elementary School’s green school project: Principal Huang introduced the concept of environmental education and allowed the idea of environmental protection to take root. The school joined Taiwan’s Green School Partnership Network Project as a result. After it became a green school, Shoufeng began to actively engage in school environment reform. 2.The way Shoufeng Elementary School participated in green school development: In terms of administrative participation, the project was carried out, in the manner of bottom-up, through democratic-style communication and effective delegation of authorities. In the area of teacher’s participation, in addition to participation in the master planning, teachers mainly engaged in curricular planning and teaching of environmental-theme-exploration courses. As far as community participation is concerned, except the chairperson of the parents’ board, few parents showed interest in this manner. But surrounding community resources often become effective outdoor classrooms for teachers. 3.Review of Shoufeng Elementary School’s achievement in green school development: In terms of Administrative management, a powerful team has been formed with members sharing the same ideas to lead teachers and students in establishment of an ideal school. In terms of school environment improvement, following completion of the sustainable school ground reconstruction project the environment of Shoufeng Elementary School has been integrated with educational programs. It becomes a place where others can come to observe and learn what Shoufeng Elementary School is doing. In terms of curricula and teaching, teachers of Shoufeng Elementary School have demonstrated their ability to design student-centered environmental education courses that allow students to freely enjoy the programs. In terms of school lives of teachers and students, the most significant attainment is the fact that concepts of environmental protection have taken root in the hearts both teachers and students. Shoufeng Elementary School needs to work on several areas, including interaction with parents, inclusion of landscape design in school environment reform and sustainable, diversified educational development

This research explored the resources of Li-chuan Aquafarm toward an environmental learning site and opportunities of advancing toward an excellence center. During 2010-11, the researcher adopted several field observation methods at the farm such as observation, participation and intern, and conduct content analysis on secondary data such as internet website, face book, blog, and films. The results found that many environmental education infrastructures have been equipped at farm, but was remaining on product marketing, image advertisement, and leisure purposes. The interpretation on farming techniques and environment is limited and only present with a cyclic map display. Education photos displayed only mollusk, birds and aquaculture species. The attitude and atmosphere of farmers although was unique; however, lack of in-depth interpretation on these. The researcher also found keys factors behind professional farming techniques are paying respect on environment, committing on continuous learning, collaborating with academic institution, complying to government’s production policy, and working very hard to achieve high performance, and valuing partnership. The farm is also devoting itself to harmonize the aquaculture production ground into nature landscape, and expand the production from primary production to fifth level of production. Based on local ecological revolution context, various educational themes can be further developed,. These themes might be related with geomorphology, natural resource and ecosystem services, technology research and development, local culture and arts, aquaculture environment, cultivating species, farming technologies, fishermen family, life experiences, local wisdoms and religious belief of operators, certified product development and process, culture activities, dining arts and community engagement. These are potential educational themes can be learnt in this fishery farm. Conversion to the environmental learning center, for the environmental carrying capacity of control and professional environment, teachers can do in-depth planning to enhance the sophistication Education field. This research recommends changes on three components such as environmental learning center facilities, customs management, educational program and educational personnel. The accessibility for disable people, interpretation infrastructures, and library shall be enhanced. Custom research shall be conducted and transformed into planning for environmental education. Education media and message shall be enhanced to provide diverse opportunities and channels to access information and for experience learning through various sensory stimuli.

Abstract:
Introduction: Obesity prevalence rates have been increasing worldwide and it was estimated that, in 2015, 28.6% of Portuguese adults aged between 25-74 years old suffered from this pathology. Obesity can lead to serious physical and mental health consequences. However, qualitative investigation in this area remains scarce. The aim of the present study is to explore the factors and processes involved in the maintenance of obesity among a sample of Portuguese adults. Method: The sample was composed of 46 participants (71.7% women) aged between 25-70 years old (M = 45.49; SD = 11.91) and with BMI ranging from 30.02 to 50.64 (M = 39.27; SD = 5.55). Individual semi-structured interviews were performed, transcribed and analysed by means of a pluralistic approach – content analysis and thematic analysis. Results: From a total of 209 codes, posteriorly divided into the themes psychological processes, physical processes, behaviours and determinants, those involved in the maintenance of obesity that were mentioned by a larger number of participants were weight regain following a weight loss attempt (Number of Coded Segments [NCS] = 81; 71.7%), unhealthy eating habits (NCS = 96; 58.7%); excessive food ingestion (NCS = 82; 56.4%), unsuccessful weight loss attempts (NCS = 54; 54.3%) and work characteristics/problems (NCS = 64; 43.5%). Discussion: These results highlight the diversity of factors and processes perceived as contributors to the maintenance of obesity, thus calling for the development of interventions directed not only at eating behaviour and physical activity, but more comprehensive and tailored to each individual’s reality and needs.

Taiwan mountain belt is the result of the convergence between the Philippine Sea Plate and Eurasian continent at a rate of 8 cm/yr. Collision began at 6-7 Ma and exhumation accelerated rate at 1-2 Ma resulting the exhumation of the Tananao metamorphic complex in eastern Central Range. The Tananao Metamorphic Complex is divided Mesozoic Tailuko belt and Miocene high pressure Yuli belt. Previous studies indicated metamorphic conditions of 15-17 kbar/530-550℃ in Yuli belt indicating burial at 50 km depth, but display lower metamorphic conditions of 3-5 Kbar/400-450℃ in Tailuko belt reflecting burial at ca. 20 km depth. In this study we conduct zircon fission track dating (ZFT), Raman spectroscopy carbonaceous material metamorphic temperature (RSCM), structural analysis, and combining with previously muscovite K-Ar (fraction < 2μm) ages across two metamorphic belts to clarify the characteristic of the Shoufeng fault. The ZFT and muscovite K-Ar ages are between 0.8-1.7 Ma and 3-4Ma, respectively in northern part Tailuko belt and Yuli belt that indicates the exhumation history is not much difference since 4 Ma. RSCM estimated metamorphism temperatures are 430-460℃ in Tungmen area, 515℃ in Hsincheng and 418℃ in Fenglin, including previous study metamorphic temperatures indicating that the metamorphic temperature progressively decreases across the Shoufent fault and decreases from north to south. Structural development in Mugua River area is characterized by well-developed S2 and S3 foliations. S3 foliations in the two metamorphic belts and mapped Shoufeng shear zones are consistently dipping at a low-angle towards the north, striking east-west and consistent with horizontal extensional shearing structures. Considering the Tailuko and Yuli belts have undergone a very similar exhumation history and structural characteristics, implying that the activity of the Shoufeng fault should have happened before 4 Ma.

This study aimed to explore the parental beliefs and parent-child interaction of the new immigrant families from different countries. The number of new immigrant females in Taiwan began to rise in the 1970s. According to statistics, there are more than 500,000 new immigrants in Taiwan now. Most of these new immigrant females married to their Taiwanese husbands from their own country and become a member of Taiwanese. They establish their own family, have children, and educate their children in Taiwan. Owing to the differences in national customs, these new immigrant females rear their children in different ways. The parental beliefs form the native family of these new immigrant females will affect their ideas and methods when raise their own children. This study used the qualitative research method, interviewed five new immigrant females living in Shoufeng Township of Hualien County, studying their parental beliefs, parent-child interaction situation, and their difficulties when teaching their children. The results of this study found that: 1.The parental beliefs from the original family of the new immigrant females may affect their parental beliefs, but they still have their own ideas about how to teach their children. 2. The new immigrant females all have positive parent-child interaction with their children, and they all pay much attention to their children's leisure activities. 3. The new immigrant females have not encountered major problems when facing the life adaptation and parent-child interaction.
