Craig, Edward. Philosophy: A Very Short Introduction. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/actrade/9780198861775.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Philosophy: A Very Short Introduction looks at different schools of philosophy and classic philosophical problems, via readings from Plato, Hume, Hobbes, Descartes, and early Buddhist writers. Could a philosopher today be asking the same questions about the self as David Hume or the early Buddhists? What were Descartes and Nietzsche trying to prove? Most people have a philosophy, in terms of a general picture of what they think the world is like and what values they live by. Are we all philosophers, and why are we more comfortable with some philosophical ideas than others? How should we live? What should we do, and how do we make these choices?

Full text
Abstract:
Logic is often perceived as having little to do with the rest of philosophy, and even less to do with real life. Logic: A Very Short Introduction shows how wrong this conception is. It explores the philosophical roots of the subject, explaining how modern formal logic deals with issues ranging from the existence of God and the reality of time to paradoxes of probability and decision theory. Along the way, the basics of formal logic are explained in simple, non-technical terms, showing that logic is a powerful and exciting part of modern philosophy. It also covers the subjects of algorithms and axioms, and proofs in mathematics.

Evans, David J. A. Glaciation: A Very Short Introduction. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/actrade/9780198745853.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Vast, majestic, and often stunningly beautiful, glaciers lock up some 10 per cent of the world’s fresh water. These great bodies of ice play an important part in the Earth system, carving landscapes and influencing climate on regional and hemispheric scales, as well as having a significant impact on global sea level. Glaciation: A Very Short Introduction offers an overview of glaciers and ice sheets as systems, considering the role of geomorphology and sedimentology in studying them, and their impacts on our planet in terms of erosional and depositional processes. Looking at our glaciers today, and their ongoing processes, it considers the extent to which we can use this knowledge in reconstructing and interpreting ancient glacial landscapes.

Abstract:
Gardens take many forms and have a variety of functions. They can serve as spaces of peace and tranquillity, a way to cultivate wildlife, or as places to develop agricultural resources. Globally, gardens have inspired, comforted, and sustained people, and many iconic gardens have inspired great artists, poets, musicians, and writers. Garden History: A Very Short Introduction embraces gardens in all their splendour, from parks and vegetable gardens to ornamental gardens, and takes the reader on a globe-trotting historical journey through iconic and cultural signposts of gardens from different regions and traditions. It concludes by looking to the future of the garden in terms of global warming and human innovation.

Abstract:
India has become one of the world’s emerging powers, rivalling China in terms of global influence. Yet people still know relatively little about the economic, social, political, and cultural changes unfolding in India today. To what extent are people benefiting from the economic boom? Does caste still exist in India? How is India’s culture industry responding to technological change? Modern India: A Very Short Introduction looks at the exciting world of change in contemporary India. It provides a recent history of the nation, investigating the contradictions that are plaguing modern India and the manner in which people, especially young people, are actively remaking the country in the 21st century.

Keown, Damien. Buddhist Ethics: A Very Short Introduction. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/actrade/9780198850052.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Buddhist Ethics: A Very Short Introduction brings together two largely independent fields of knowledge: Buddhism and ethics. It begins by explaining Buddhist ethical teachings and then asking how these teachings might be classified in terms of more familiar Western theories of ethics. Following this overview, the remainder of the book considers how Buddhism might respond to six specific issues of contemporary concern that have proved controversial in the West. A separate chapter is devoted to each of the following topics: animals and the environment; sexuality and gender; war, violence, and terrorism; abortion; suicide and euthanasia; and biomedical technologies and Transhumanism. While Buddhism shares many moral values with other religions like Christianity, some aspects of its moral teachings—like karma and rebirth—are less familiar and result in positions that are more nuanced than might at first be imagined.

Adams, Jade Broughton. F. Scott Fitzgerald's Short Fiction. Edinburgh University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474424684.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
F. Scott Fitzgerald is remembered primarily as a novelist, but he wrote nearly two hundred short stories for popular magazines such as the widely-read Saturday Evening Post. These stories are vividly infused with the new popular culture of the 1910s, 1920s, and 1930s, from jazz and blues music to motion pictures and performing arts. This book demonstrates how popular culture had a deep impact on Fitzgerald’s work, not just in terms of evoking period detail, but by confirming Fitzgerald as an experimental writer whose popular short stories reflect the serious modernist concerns occupying writers such as Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Sherwood Anderson, Dorothy Parker, and Langston Hughes. This book explores how popular culture impacted on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary aesthetics on both thematic and formal levels, to a greater extent than previously recognised. Encompassing spheres of both American studies and cultural studies, this book offers a revisionist perspective on Fitzgerald’s short fiction of the interwar period, which is often overlooked in favour of the novels, especially The Great Gatsby. By exploring Fitzgerald’s fascination with leisure, specifically the intertwined cultural spheres of dance, music, theatre, and film, this book argues that he innovatively imported practices borrowed from other popular cultural media into his short stories, deploying disruptive techniques of ambiguity and parody that sit in tension with reader expectations of his lyrical style and the commercial publication contexts of his stories.

Walsh, Bruce, and Michael Lynch. Short-term Changes in the Mean: 2. Truncation and Threshold Selection. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198830870.003.0014.

Full text
Abstract:
The selection intensity, the mean change in a trait within a generation expressed in phenotypic standard deviations, provides an important metric for comparing the strength of selection over designs. Further, under truncation selection (only individuals above some threshold leave offspring), the selection intensity is a function of the fraction saved, and hence the breeder's equation is often expressed in terms of the selection intensity. An important special case of truncation selection is a threshold trait, wherein an individual only expresses a particular phenotype when its underlying liability value exceeds some threshold. This chapter examines selection on such traits, and generalizes this binary-trait setting (with binomial residuals) to other classes of discrete traits, wherein some underling linear model (generating the threshold) is this transformed via a generalized linear mixed model into an observed trait value.

Rhodes, Neil. Vulgar Italian and the Elizabethan Short Story. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198704102.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
Early in the sixteenth century, Italy came to represent the cultural vanguard in Europe both in terms of new ideas and in offering a literary model of the vernacular. English visitors to Italy such as William Thomas and William Barker saw this in action at the Accademia Fiorentina where Giovanni Gelli lectured on Dante. The academy itself is a model for the principle of ‘vulgarization’ set out in the preface to Hoby's Courtier. This is put into practice in the first short-story collection in English, William Painter's Palace of Pleasure, which takes Boccaccio as its stylistic authority and in its tales of transgression acts as a primer of social possibility for English readers. These translations from Italian would themselves be translated for the stage, and two of the many spin-offs from Painter, by George Whetstone and George Pettie, point in the direction of the public and private theatres respectively.

Full text
Abstract:
The US Civil War: A Very Short Introduction covers a period in American history characterized by decades of intensifying conflict over slavery and government authority, culminating in Abraham Lincoln’s election and eleven states seceding from the Union. The Civil War began as a limited conflict with the aim of restoring the Union. It became a diffuse, violent war that lasted four years, claimed hundreds of thousands of lives, and ultimately led to the abolition of slavery and a vigorous debate over the terms by which the seceded states would be restored to the nation. This VSI ends with a chapter on the aftermath of the war and the remaking of America.
