Jack, Belinda. Reading: A Very Short Introduction. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/actrade/9780198820581.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Reading: A Very Short Introduction explores the fascinating history of literacy and the opportunities reading opens. For much of human history reading was the preserve of the elite, and most reading meant being read to. Innovations in printing, paper-making, and transport, combined with increased public education, brought a boom in worldwide literacy from the late 18th century. Established links between a nation’s levels of literacy and its economy led to the promotion of reading for political ends. Reading has also been associated with subversive ideas, leading to censorship. Telling the story of reading, its ambiguities and complexities, from the ancient world to digital reading and restrictions today, this VSI explores why it is such an important aspect of our society.

Abstract:
This collaborative, open educational resource brings together a collection of short pedagogical texts that help new learners understand complex theoretical concepts and disciplinary jargon from the critical social sciences. Each entry "shows" an element of theory using an "illustrative vignette”—a short, evocative story, visual or infographic, poem, described photograph, or other audio-visual material. Of use across disciplines and community contexts, Showing Theory aims to democratize theory while linking it to practical, grounded experience.

Abstract:
Abstract A close reading of the form and essence of Baldwin’s famous short story and of its inspiration rooted in Baldwin’s experience of racial injustice in America, his youth in Harlem, his witnessing of the effects of heroin addiction on a generation of his peers, his experience and understanding of the consolations and limits of religious practice, his transcendent embodiment of jazz as an element in the story, and, overall, the profound, world-wide influence the story has had in transforming perspectives on race and in creating greater sympathy and human harmony across the more than a half century in which the story has been read by many millions of people and been standard assigned reading in secondary and higher education classrooms.

Jones, Angela. African American Civil Rights. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400607578.

Full text
Abstract:
This fresh and invigorating analysis illuminates the often-neglected story of early African American civil rights activism. African American Civil Rights: Early Activism and the Niagara Movement tells a fascinating story, one that is too frequently marginalized. Offering the first full-length, comprehensive sociological analysis of the Niagara Movement, which existed between 1905 and 1910, the book demonstrates that, although short-lived, the movement was far from a failure. Rather, it made the need to annihilate Jim Crow and address the atrocities caused by slavery publicly visible, creating a foundation for more widely celebrated mid-20th-century achievements. This unique study focuses on what author Angela Jones terms black publics, groups of concerned citizens—men and women, alike—who met to shift public opinion. The book explores their pivotal role in initiating the civil rights movement, specifically examining secular organizations, intellectual circles, the secular black press, black honor societies and clubs, and prestigious educational networks. All of these, Jones convincingly demonstrates, were seminal to the development of civil rights protest in the early 20th century.

Forrest, David. Kes. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781839025679.

Full text
Abstract:
Ken Loach’s 1969 drama Kes, considered one of the finest examples of British social realism, tells the story of Billy, a working class boy who finds escape and meaning when he takes a fledgling kestrel from its nest. David Forrest’s study of the film examines the genesis of the original novel, Barry Hines’ A Kestrel for a Knave (1968), the eventual collaboration that brought it to the screen, and the film's funding and production processes. He provides an in depth analysis of key scenes and draws on archival sources to shed new light on the film’s most celebrated moments. He goes on to consider the film’s lasting legacy, having influenced films like Ratcatcher (1999) and This is England (2006), both in terms of its contribution to film history and as a document of political and cultural value. He makes a case for the film's renewed relevance in our present era of systemic economic (and regional) inequality, alienated labour, increasingly narrow educational systems, toxic masculinity, and ecological crisis. Kes endures, he argues, because it points towards the possibility for emancipation and fulfilment through a more responsive and nurturing approach to education, a more delicate and symbiotic relationship with landscape and the non-human, and an emotional articulacy and sensitivity shorn of the rigid expectations of gender.

Full text
Abstract:
The role of emotion in clinical education and practice is discussed, drawing upon thinkers such as Derald Wing Sue, John Dewey, Joanna Shapiro, and others. Focusing on Alice Munro’s short story “The Floating Bridge,” different themes of classroom discussion are described, as well as an in-class writing exercise including examples of participant responses. Several questions and themes are explored: How does exploration of judgment in readers’ response to a literary text offer insight into the role of judgment in a clinical context? What is the effect of hearing the various emotional responses of other readers in enhancing an appreciation of diverse perspectives? How might we understand this classroom/workshop in light of John Dewey’s description of an aesthetic “experience” of particular clarity and intensity? And finally, what are the consequences of such pedagogical approaches integrating attentiveness to emotion for healthcare training and practice?

Full text
Abstract:
This introductory chapter first maps the logic for the unconventional inclusions of Faye HeavyShield's creamy, multipaged, glass-bead book entitled hours and Beth Piatote's short fictional story, “Beading Lesson”, as the cover and finale of the present volume, respectively. It then provides an overview of the extraordinary set of essays nesting between the covers of HeavyShield and Piatote by sampling some key concerns for a transnational history of indigenous women's labor. Although not clearly scored between chapters nor among sectors of work, the book is organized both chronologically and relative to various sectors of labor discussed by the respective authors. Starting with examinations of women's resources or manual labor, the analysis moves to variations on rural, agricultural- or land-based labor; turns to reproductive and/or domestic “service” or labor within arenas such as women's social networks or “clubs”; focuses on entrepreneurial and creative initiatives and the professional opportunities that evolve according to external market demands; and concludes by looking at women's labor and their compounding social capital as they transition into advocacy, activism, education, or administration.

Gronnerud, Kathleen. Hillary Clinton. An Imprint of ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400663468.

Full text
Abstract:
This single-volume resource for students and general audience readers provides an in-depth overview of the life experiences, influences, and personal views of Hillary Clinton from her childhood in 1950s suburban Chicago to her presidential run in 2016. While numerous volumes have been written about Hillary Clinton, many authors have devoted entire books to just one aspect of Clinton's public or private life. Yet few, if any, single volumes have provided a comprehensive look at her life in public service from an objective, scholarly viewpoint. Designed both for students doing research and general readers wanting to know more about Clinton's life and career, this book not only offers an overview of her education, family, career, and political views, but also provides historical context to her choices, accomplishments, and defeats. The volume's chapters present a chronological telling of her life story thus far including key experiences, influences, and the development of her political views. The volume also includes photographs and short sidebars, which help to tie Clinton's personal experiences to the contemporaneous culture of the nation. A lengthy bibliography provides assistance to readers interested in further research or reading.
