Abstract:
This chapter examines the idealized construction of the Indian immigrant home and household in online grocery stores, shopping sites, and banking sites. Through close readings of these sites, it reveals how the textual, cultural, and institutional politics of a diverse set of Indian and Indian immigrant players has shaped the production of an idealized version of the immigrant home as a household organized around elite imaginations of mobility, the reproduction of the filial thorough the financial, and the agency and labor of male technology professionals. It situates the idealization of the immigrant home in the context of the ideologies of e-commerce and online financial transactions that first emerged in the late 1990s, and continue to be mobilized around the domestic and transnational needs and desires of Indian immigrants in the United States.

Abstract:
3000. That's the number of marketing messages the average American confronts on a daily basis from TV commercials, magazine and newspaper print ads, radio commercials, pop-up ads on gaming apps, to pre-roll on YouTube videos and native advertising on mobile news apps. These commercial messages are so pervasive that we cannot help but be affected by perpetual come-ons to keeping buying. Over the last decade, advertising has become more devious, more digital, and more deceptive, with an increasing number of ads designed to appear to the untrained eye to be editorial content. It's easy to see why. As we have become smarter at avoiding ads, advertisers have become smarter about disguising them. Mara Einstein exposes how our shopping, political and even dating preferences are unwittingly formed by brand images and the mythologies embedded in them. Advertising: What Everyone Needs to Know® helps us combat the effects of manipulative advertising, and enables the reader to understand how marketing industries work in the digital age, particularly in their uses and abuses of Big Data. Most importantly, it awakens us to advertising's subtle and not so subtle impact on our lives-both as individuals and as a global society. What ideas and information are being communicated to us-and to what end?

McPherson, Gary E., and Graham F. Welch, eds. The Oxford Handbook of Music Education, Volume 1. Oxford University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199730810.001.0001.

Abstract:
Music education takes place in many contexts, both formal and informal. Be it in a school or music studio, while making music with friends or family, or even while travelling in a car, walking through a shopping mall or watching television, our myriad sonic experiences accumulate from the earliest months of life to foster our facility for making sense of the sound worlds in which we live. The Oxford Handbook of Music Education, which comprises of two volumes, offers an overview of the many facets of musical experience, behavior, and development in relation to this diverse variety of contexts. In this first volume, articles discuss a range of key issues and concepts associated with music learning and teaching. The volume then focuses on these processes as they take place during childhood, from infancy through adolescence and primarily in the school-age years. Exploring how children across the globe learn and make music, and the skills and attributes gained when they do so, these articles examine the means through which music educators can best meet young people's musical needs. The second volume of the set brings the exploration beyond the classroom and into later life. Whether they are used individually or in tandem, the two volumes of this text update and redefine the discipline, and show how individuals across the world learn, enjoy, and share the power and uniqueness of music.

Abstract:
This chapter covers interventions with people who need encouragement with cooking or shopping due to motivational, cognitive, and information-processing difficulties associated with severe mental illness. Community outreach allows an in vivo approach to supporting these tasks that enable people to survive outside of hospital and which contribute to their quality of life. Functional assessment, activity analysis, and collaborative goal setting are discussed, together with ways of measuring progress. The evidence base for interventions such as social skills training is critiqued. A case study and summary care plan illustrate typical approaches with patients in the community.

Hopkins, Ramona O., Maria E. Carlo, and James C. Jackson. Critical Illness and Long-Term Cognitive Impairment. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199398690.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
Evidence from dozens of studies of thousands of individuals suggest that as many as half of critical illness survivors experience significant deficits in memory, executive functioning, attention, and processing speed that persist years after discharge from the intensive care unit (ICU). This chapter reviews the prevalence, characteristics, possible mechanisms, and risk factors for long-term cognitive impairment after critical illness. Some key risks factors—notably, delirium—may be modifiable, whereas others, such as genetic markers, are not. Cognitive impairments are associated with psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder. The impact of critical illness–related cognitive impairment on individuals and society includes financial costs, inability to return to work, impairments in instrumental activities of daily living (financial management, medication management, shopping, home care), reduced quality of life, and caregiver burden. Efforts need to be directed not only at modifying risk factors but also at attempting to prevent, treat, and remediate deficits.

Abstract:
Our beautiful, new digital world has a come at a price, which we are paying by relinquishing our personal data–while we are shopping, driving our cars, and chatting and surfing on the Internet. However, the intelligent algorithms needed to process this data pose a threat to freedom in our society. They analyse and evaluate us, while predicting our behaviour. Big data and data mining are the business models of the future. What does all this mean for politics, the economy, journalism and political communication? Do we have to defend basic human rights and human dignity against the digital revolution? Do we need new laws and a code of ethics for algorithms? And how will politics, the media and democracy function under these new conditions? In this book, experts from a variety of academic fields, journalism and politics discuss these questions in terms of the future and society. With contributions by Johanna Haberer, Yvonne Hofstetter, Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, Klaus Mainzer, Daniel Moßbrucker, Peter Schaar, Michael Schröder, Axel Schwanebeck and Thomas Zeilinger.
