Abstract:
Background: Shone syndrome is characterized by coincident mitral valve stenosis and left ventricular outflow tract obstruction. Although first described in 1963, little research has expounded surgical outcomes. We sought to evaluate our experience with this cohort, emphasizing outcomes including mortality, morbidity, and cardiac function. Methods: A retrospective chart review of 46 patients who underwent operation for Shone syndrome between 1990 and May 2018 was conducted. Index operations included 32 repairs of the left ventricular outflow tract, four mitral valve repair/replacements, nine combined repairs, and one non-Shone’s repair. Median age at index procedure was 22 days (2 days-10 years). Mean follow-up was 9.1 years (2 months-21 years), and 70 additional operations (51 reoperations) were required. Three patients were lost to follow-up. Results: Overall survival was 95.7% with two late deaths. Freedom from death or transplant was 93.5%. Thirteen (28.3%) patients remained free from reoperation. Thirty-three patients required 51 reoperations of the left ventricle outflow tract (n = 12), mitral valve (n = 16), combined repairs (n = 21), and transplant (n = 1). At most recent follow-up, patients exhibited mitral stenosis (n = 21), aortic stenosis (n = 7), and diminished LV function (n = 2). Conclusion: Surgical correction of Shone’s offers excellent survival benefit, but reoperation burden is high, with >70% of patients requiring reintervention in the follow-up period. A total of 65% of patients developed recurrent obstruction of left ventricular inflow or outflow, however, ventricular function is preserved in the majority of patients. All but one patient had no functional deficits, classified as New York Heart Association I with > 60% requiring no medication.

Abstract:
In this study I examine the representation of masculinity in the manga, Naruto.  The manga is about the orphan Naruto, who, together with other children goes to a ninja school. Boys and girls study and practice together, at first sight seemingly without emphasized gender differences. As the story continues, the gender differences are, however, quite obvious and to the boys advantage. I find the difference between Naruto and other popular culture ususally presented to pre-bubertal and teenage boys to be considerable. Whereas the domination of women and the message that you can get as far as you wish, are common in American and west produced popular culture as well as in Naruto, the difference lies in how the success is achieved. The men in Naruto reach their goals by allowing their feelings to be seen and expressed. They cry, love, comfort and hate, the feelings give the men strength  The loving is not sexualized, but expressedly aimed at friends, pupils and all of humankind, and the outcome is a wish to protect the loved ones. The hate on the other hand is considered as a one-way road, and Naruto’s power is his ability to make those who have given in to hate to see this. A cultural studies approach allows me to argue för seeing Naruto as part of what is constructing masculinity in Sweden today. The hegemonic masculinity in Naruto is confident, healthy and white. It differs from femininity by expressing it’s goals and by reaching victory in the battles it parttake. It is however also loving, caring, comforting and able to express sadness and loneliness as well as anger.

Abstract:
Through the filter of the periodical literature intended for juveniles, especially boys, this thesis examines some facets of the Irish sporting culture as it emerged during the “Long Gestation” of Ireland’s independence, i.e. the period prior to the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922, which witnessed the Gaelic cultural revival, the outbreak of the Easter Rising in 1916 and Sinn Féin’s triumph over the Redmondites in the 1918 election. By focusing on this kind of publishing genre, indeed, it is possible to raise a complex network of images, symbols and discourses related to Irish sporting culture. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first is devoted to presenting the aims and objectives of this study, the literature review, the corpus being analysed, and the methodology. Textual analysis, if mostly focused on the fictional and non-fictional content of the story papers, extends to other bodies of writing: private correspondence, parliamentary debates, government reports, and periodical criticism. The juxtaposed analyses of texts of such a multifarious nature enabled me to understand the prevailing attitudes and socio-cultural mores of the time as well as the political and cultural implications of the rise of a sport system in Ireland. The second part of No Shoneen: Gaelic Games and the Athletic Hero in the Irish Periodical Press thus details the steps that led up to the emergence of an Irish sport system and how Gaelic games came to be cultural signifiers pointing to Ireland’s specificity at home and abroad. Moreover, in this section, I also discuss why the early twentieth century saw the emergence of what can be termed “Athletic Hero” as the last two chapters of this work expound the connection between the rise of the Irish sport system and the political and cultural investment on the youths of Ireland to demonstrate how Gaelic games assisted the Irish in the formation of a new ideal of boyhood. More specifically, whereas the fourth chapter focuses on the conception of the young athlete as the maker of Ireland’s independence and the cornerstone of a new community – a conception revolving around the notion of sporting practice as a form of military preparedness –, the last chapter traces the contours of the idealised masculinity embodied by the young Gaelic athlete. The objective is to show how the athlete’s vigorous body was aptly represented and extolled so as to counteract the stereotypical characterizations of the Irish as inferiors in need of Anglo-Saxon domination.

Abstract:
French translations of Japanese comic books have now become an important part of the French-speaking literary world. Through an analysis of the reception of nekketsu shonen manga inside the European French territory, this thesis aims to analyze and explain manga's literary integration in France. The first step consists in characterizing the epistemic context of contemporary France. This thesis considers that the latter context is that of hypermodernity, which is characterized here by four main elements: speed, fragmentation, anxiety and individualism. Based on this premise, this thesis attempts to demonstrate the existence of several correspondences between the act of reading shonen manga and the hypermodern reader, by using theories of literary reception (Fish, Jauss, Jouve), comics theory (Groensteen, McCloud, Morgan) and media theory (McLuhan, Ong, Vandendorpe). Hence, first of all, manga correspond to hypermodern frenzy by encouraging an accelerated reading. Secondly, they correspond to the hypermodern being's accentuated individualism by emphasizing the characters' intimate quests; at the same time, they provide the contemporary French reader with an unsettling reading experience, in which the reader finds both a crystallization of his own identity-related instability, and a way to counter the latter. Thirdly, manga are representative of secondary orality, a hybridization of orality and literacy which is a part of hypermodernity. Finally, manga evoke resonances which correspond to the new media-related habits of the 21 st century reader.

Among Japanese Manga, this research focuses on the differences of the segmenting structure and the size of segments between Shonen Manga and Shojo Manga. From the view of segmenting in comics, this research investigates how segmenting affects the pace of story in Shonen Manga and Shojo Manga differently. Also, it investigates Manga creators’ habits of placing segments and methods of segmenting. The design of this research is divided into 4 stages. First, defining the terms "Manga", "Shojo Manga" and "Shonen Manga" and analyzing the importance and usage of segmenting according to references. Second, looking into Shonen Manga and Shojo Manga through Kodansha and Shogakukan Manga contests and collecting segmenting samples of winning works from year 2000 to 2010. Third, discussing views on the placement of segments and the numbering sequence by text analytics and focus group interviews; categorizing the segmenting of comics into "Shonen Manga" and "Shojo Manga" by means of content analysis; numbering all types of segmenting accordingly with the help of the numbering group and listing the information in form(s); comparing and analyzing the numbered types of segmenting in Shonen Manga and Shojo Manga; applying the results of comparison and analysis in the 114 comic works chosen by purposive sampling and investigating Manga creators'' most frequently used, numbered type(s) of segmenting with the help of the expert group. Fourth, concluding text analytics and research findings of literature review and content analysis. According to research findings,1. Creating storyboard is not equivalent to segmenting. These two are different elements of Manga. (1) Segmenting is used to divide the space for storyboards. (2) Segmenting requires storyboards to form a Manga work, yet storyboards do not necessarily require segmenting to form one. 2. The biggest difference between Shonen Manga and Shojo Manga is the use of segmenting without spaces between segments. Since Shojo Manga use more segmenting without spaces between segments than Shonen Manga, the frequency of using this kind of segmenting is a good way to differentiate the two types of Manga. There are two reasons why Shojo Manga frequently use segmenting without spaces between segments. First, it is convenient for drawing. Second, it allows pages to look simple and neat. Due to the wide variety of segment shapes, creators of Shojo Manga merely leave spaces between segments to prevent confusion. 3. When the size of segments is small, the number of segments increases. However, the increase in number of segments does not lead to an increase in types of segment placement. The number of segments in comics is neither positively nor negatively proportional to the types of segment placement. In average, the most frequently used type of segment placement is the "horizontal 3 x vertical 2" one, with 4 segments on one page. Therefore, it can be concluded that comic creators usually use the "horizontal 3 x vertical 2" as the major approach in placing segments and typesetting, creating 4 segments in total.

This thesis aims to analyze the perception and the reception of male readers with different sexual orientation about shonen manga ONE PIECE. When it comes to the story plot of male characters protect female characters, almost every male reader takes it as granted. It is due to the influence of their daily life and education, in which they have been taught that men should protect women. As a result, they think male characters should protect female characters. On the other hand, when respondents are asked to imagine that the gender of the princess changes into male, how would they think about the same arrangements of the prince. Homosexual respondents respond that they can accept a male prince behaves as the same arrangements of the princess. It shows less stereotype about how a man and a woman should behave. In contrast, heterosexual respondents think that male characters should behave like men, must take more responsibility of battle. Last but not least, temperament influences how readers identify and connect with the gender of characters. For the respondent embracing his femininity, because of the temperament, he could connect himself with female characters naturally, being aware of the gender inequality in ONE PIECE.

This study aims to explore one of the modern literature witers of Japan, Akutagawa Ryunosuke and the image elements presented in his works. He was born almost the same time as the existence of Japanese movies, from his works, 『tuioku』and 『fusyoudan』, we can feel his great concerns about moves clearly.During Akutagawa’s late years, he promoted the concept of「hanasirasiihanasinonaisyousetu」within his work, 『Bungeiteki na, amarini Bungeitekina』, 「enitikaisyousetu」was as if the images are shown individually from every space. The forms of 「keisiki」and 「sitekinaseisin」 were matched with 「Image elements」, because the people and things in the novels were actually performed which influenced the visual impressions. Through the visual impressions reflected by images of people and things in the novels, we can speculate Akutagawa’s inner landscape. By inspection analysis, Akutagawa’s late years’s work,『Nankin no Kirisuto』(1920), was a work which could be accomplished by the images of dark and light of the space.Another work,『Shonen』in 1924 was same as the above , which can feel dramatically changes of far and near with separated chapters.『Mirage』(1927) was the concrete work of so-called 「sitekinaseisin」in 「hanasirasiihanasinonaisyousetu」which can display uneasy and worried of his late years. This research combines the concept of 「hanasirasiihanasinonaisyousetu」 with the techniques of images performance promoted by Akutagawa Ryunosuke which presented his consciousness of performance through the inventions of this three novels. The characteristics of Akutagawa Ryunosuke in literature writing could be found in the performance consciousness inspection of his works as well.

This study explored how readers are psychologically affected by the pictorial representation of human faces in comic books, as compared to the real faces. We studied how readers form impressions of comics characters and to what extent personality data can be conveyed through facial features. Our findings provide comics creators with specific, practical reference data in developing the appearances and personalities of their characters. The study is divided into two parts: We first discuss how readers identify characters based on their facial features and then explore the personality implications of these features. We researched how readers identify the faces of comics characters and compared our findings with previous studies on human facial recognition. We found that difficulty in identifying character roles has an enormous impact on the ability of participants to understand the plot and become absorbed in the story. Participants experiencing such difficulties complained that the book was tedious and in some cases even refused to read it. When attempting to identify characters, participants compared differences in facial features among different comics characters, rather than seeking consistency of facial features in the same character appearing in different frames. The eyes and mouth were key indicators when participants used only internal facial features to identify the characters. The greater the differences between the eyes and mouth, the more easily participants were able to make an accurate identification. Eyebrows played a particularly unique role. According to subjective reports from participants, eyebrows are the second-most important facial feature, surpassed only by the eyes. However, experimental findings showed that eyebrows did not affect role identification. Previous studies on human facial recognition have found that the nose is the third-most important physical feature, outranked by the eyes and mouth. When identifying comics characters however, participants did not consider the nose to be a significant feature. This was echoed by experimental findings which showed that the nose did not affect the accuracy of role identification. When the nose was eliminated from illustrations, however, the reaction time required to identify characters was significantly reduced. Even more surprisingly, participants referred to several nose-related parameters when making judgments of personality based on first impressions. Before reading the story, participants often made judgments about the personalities of characters based on their facial features, and considered themselves capable of physiognomic interpretation. This indicates that at the start of reading a new comic book, most readers mentally build personality models for characters and interpret their dialogue and actions based on these models. We also found that, based on their first impressions, participants tended to classify characters as either type ISTJ or type ENFP (two of the 16 MBTI types). These appearance-based judgments were generally determined by eye and nose parameters: the height of the eyes, iris area, the distance from the nasal corner of the eye to the lower edge of the nose (N-L distance), and the length and area of the nose were all important elements in the judgment of personality based on first impressions. These features were all significantly correlated with the four MBTI dimensions. Characters with smaller height of the eyes, smaller eye and iris areas, greater N-L distance, longer noses and larger nose areas tended to be classified as ISTJ personality types. Characters with features on the opposite end of the scale, however, were more commonly classed as ENFP types. These two personality types were also shown to be highly differentiable, as both participants and experts produced highly consistent results when evaluating these personalities.

Abstract:
In recent years, rental services such as e-bikes and electric kickboards are becoming popular for short-distance local transportation for tourists. However, since fully electric mobility requires a driver's license in Japan, it is difficult to say that anyone can easily ride such vehicles. Electric power-assisted bicycles, which can be driven without a driver's license, help people get around comfortably, but they are difficult to use in the rain. In addition, users are at risk of wobbling or falling when riding at low speeds or stopping because they are heavy. In this study, we designed and developed an electric power-assisted quadricycle that does not require a driving license and has no risk of tipping over as a secondary means of transportation targeting female tourists visiting the Shonan area for a day trip.

Abstract:
The slit-lamp biomicroscope is essential in the clinical evaluation of the human ocular anterior segment. A narrow slit of intense white light is shone into the globe, illuminating a thin optical section of the anterior segment, and the illuminated section is examined at an angle through a icroscope. While qualitatively useful, the resultant image is quantitatively severely distorted by the angle of observation, which is a variable projection of the true spacings, and by the passage of the scattered light through the cornea, a strong and sharply curved refractor.

Abstract:
The feast of all the saints who shone in the Russian land was established after the Macariuscouncils of the 1547 and 1549, and already in the 1550s. Gregory, a monk of the Savior-Euthymius monastery in Suzdal, composed a service. The service is created according to chant models mainly taken from services for Russian saints, using both direct borrowing a hymn and adaptation of the hymn and creating a new one according to the model. We can say that this service shows a typical way of compiling a hymnography of the 16th–17th centuries. The report analyzes the sources and methods of creating a service compiled by Gregory.

Abstract:
Women are half of society and partners with men in the purpose for which they were created, which is the worship of God and the building of the earth, In order to achieve development for the continuation of life, and the Sunnah of the Prophet is a witness to the luminous models of many female companions, they had an honorable role in building the Islamic civilization whose light shone and illuminated the world, The direction of Islam in general and the Sunnah in particular was to encourage women to take care of their homes and families, but they did not hesitate to encourage them to build society and enter the economic field. Evidence from the Sunnah proved that women's participation was inclusive of all economic activities of all kinds, whether that was related to commodity and service production or was an economic exchange, That is, everything related to trade, and she dealt with her keenness to adhere to the Islamic morals defined by the Sharia. And by following the texts of the Sunnah, we stand with evidence of the facts through which it proved economic rationality that made it creative in all areas of life, inside and outside the home. How did women participate in promoting their society economically

Abstract:
We have observed that near bandgap illumination (λ ~ 0.8-0.95 µm) of a CdTe:In crystal under an applied voltage alters the uniform electric field distribution and resuits in a high electric field region near the negative electrode. Although a similar effect has been reported for BSO, GaAs, and other photorefractive crystals, the behavior in CdTe differs in several aspects. We have measured the time evolution, voltage, and the intensity dependence of the magnitude and the width of the high field region. This effect is used in a transverse electrooptic modulator where a near IR (0.8-0.95-µm) beam from a GaAs laser or an incoherent source, shone through a transparent ITO electrode, modifies the electric fields, and hence the birefringence below the electrode. The polarization state of a longer wavelength signal beam is altered and accordingly routed by a polarizing prism. We have observed a very high sensitivity to the control beam (Icontrol ~ 10 µW/cm2) and have been able to demonstrate low loss (–0.5 dB corrected by the reflection losses), high contrast (>10:1), and routing of a signal beam (λ~ 1.5 µm). We have measured a latch-type switching time of 40 µs at higher intensities with a long dark decay time. Factors concerning the integration of this device into an array are being examined and are reported on.
