Abstract:
David Shoemaker has argued that autistic persons cannot be held accountable and are not members of the moral community. Arguing against this conclusion, this article both corrects the view of autism contained in Shoemaker’s paper and resituates his theory of accountability within a Christian virtue ethic based on the gift of friendship. The call to be accountable to God for one’s life contains within it the gift of God’s friendship and does not require the capacity for empathy ( contra Shoemaker) or joint attention ( contra Pinsent) as a prerequisite. Instead, the inclusion of autistic people within the moral community created by the call of God highlights that accountability is a grace given for the flourishing of all persons.

Abstract:
Abstract Qualia realists hold that experience’s phenomenal character is a non-representational property of experience, what they call qualia. Representationalists hold that phenomenal character is a representational property of experience — there are no qualia (in this particular sense of the word). The transparency of qualia to introspection would seem to count as reason for rejecting qualia realism and favouring representationalism. Sydney Shoemaker defends a middle ground, call it moderate qualia realism, which seems to provide a response to the problem of transparency that in consistent with qualia realism. According to this view, while phenomenal character is a representational property of experience, it is determined by certain non-representational properties of experience, namely qualia. Shoemaker explains the apparent transparency of qualia by claiming that, while qualia are not directly introspectible, they are indirectly introspectible. I argue that neither Shoemaker’s moderate qualia realism nor his account of indirect introspection provide the qualia realist with a plausible solution to the problem of transparency.

Abstract:
Some aspects related to the sporulation of B. Sacchari"in vitro"and the reaction of some varieties of sugarcane to the pathogen in greenhouse and field conditions were studied in this work. The pathogen was cultivated in three culture media (PDA - potato, dextrose, agar: CLA - cane leaf, agar and LHC - lactose, hidrolised caseine, agar) under three light regimens (continuous light, alternate light and continuous darkness). The results showed that (1) the continuous darkness inhibited and the continuous light and alternate light promoted the sporulation, in the three media tested; (2) under continuous light LHC was better than PDA and CLA, and under alternate light the media were not different statistically, and (3) difference between continuous light and alternate light was observed only in the PDA medium with better sporulation under alternate light. The variety reactions were obtained by inoculating them with 2,0 x 104 spores/ml inoculum suspension. The evaluation was made by using a 1 - 5 note scale based on foliar symptons, classified from highly resistent to highly susceptible. Some varieties showed different reactions on the tests conducted, probably caused by little variation on the ambient conditions. The advantages of conducting eye spot resistance testing in greenhouse over field conditions were discussed. The adoption of preventive measures in order to control the eye spot, specially on those regions the disease frequently occurs, were also suggested

Abstract:

Abstract:
The present study examined the role of the Korean ethnic press in Australia with special reference to the ways in which their professional backgrounds shaped the construction of the news content of their newspapers. The study sample consisted of six Korean ethnic newspapers produced in Sydney. Both intrinsic and extrinsic factors relevant to the role of journalists were identified in interviews with the editors and publishers. The overall news content was analyzed through quantitative and qualitative content analysis. The principal finding of this study was that none of Shoemaker's (1987) theoretical statements about how economic factors shape news content could be applied to the Korean ethnic press in Australia. Despite their reliance on commercial sources for their economic survival, all six papers devoted more space to issue oriented news than to event-oriented news, and were not responsive to their readers and advertisers in Shoemaker's terms. Journalistic professionalism as discussed by Henningham (1989) also was treated as a less important factor by Korean ethnic newspaper staff. Rather the professional identity of the ethnic press editors and publishers was grounded in the culture of their local community instead of in the mainstream standards of It is concluded that Korean ethnic newspapers in Australia have more pragmatic criteria both for the selection of their news content, and for the professional standards of their newspaper staff.

Abstract At the time of this writing in 2019, I have been studying hypervelocity impacts for about 34 years. I attended my first Hypervelocity Impact Symposium in 1992. In this paper, I attempt to show what I’ve been up to all this time but also show some of the things I’ve learned along the way. I’ve singled out three topics that stand out in my mind as milestones in my career: the impact of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 on Jupiter in 1994, the development of adaptive mesh refinement for the CTH hydrocode in 1998-2001 and my ongoing studies of hypervelocity impact-generated magnetic fields from 1985 to the present day.

Abstract:
Meniscal injuries frequently occur in combination with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. Tears in the menisci that occur acutely with ACL injury are located either medially or laterally, but in ACL deficient knees chronic instability most commonly leads to meniscal tears in the posterior horn of medial meniscus (Smith & Barrett, 2001). Levy et al. (1982) suggested that medial meniscus might act as a mechanical wedge preventing tibial anterior translation due to its firm attachment to the tibia at the posterior horn. Previous biomechanical studies infer the role of the meniscus through measurements of alternations in forces or knee motions (Shoemaker & Markolf, 1986; Allen, 2000), however no study has provided clear images of the motion or deformation of the meniscus itself. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of anterior cruciate ligament resection, as well as partial and complete meniscectomies on knee kinematics in response to anterior loading. Application of loads during magnetic resonance (MR) imaging allows us to visualize the motion and deformation of the menisci, and therefore obtain a more clear understanding of its role in knee stability.

Abstract:
Abstract Many applications in robotics, spatial mechanism design, and mechanical systems animation require the specification of the movement of a rigid body through space. In this paper, we apply Shoemake’s quaternion interpolation formula to pairs of quaternions, known as biquaternions, to obtain an interpolation procedure for spatial motion. A biquaternion represents a rotation in four dimensional space, an element of SO(4). Because a spatial displacement can be viewed as special case of a four dimensional rotation, we can use a biquaternion as an image point of a spatial configuration and a biquaternion curve to represent spatial movement. We present an example of biquaternion interpolation using four key configurations. The result is a smooth movement in SO(4), which we then map to a spatial movement. A comparison with a similar technique based on dual quaternions is provided.

Abstract:
Castle Garth is the name of the fortified area once enclosed within the castle walls. In the fifteenth century Newcastle became a county in its own right, however, the Garth, being within the castle walls, remained part of the County of Northumberland. The Great Hall, a building separate from the Castle Fortress (the “Keep”), which in later years became known as the “Old Moot Hall”, was used by courts that sat at regular intervals in every county of England and Wales. The Fortress then became a prison for the County and was used as such until the early nineteenth century. Beginning in the fifteenth century, unlicensed traders, taking advantage of the fact that the city authorities had no jurisdiction over the Garth area, settled there with their commercial activities. From the time of Charles II (1630-1685), the area then became famous for its tailors and shoemakers, who grew particularly abundantly on the path known as “Castle Stairs”. In 1619 the fortified complex was rented by James I to the courtier Alexander Stephenson, who allowed the civilian houses to be built inside the castle walls. After the civil war, new houses were added until, towards the end of the eighteenth century, Castle Garth had become a distinct and densely populated community, with a theater, public houses and lodgings. The main urban transformations were started in the early nineteenth century with the construction of the new Moot Hall called County Court. From 1847 to 1849 the fortified enclosure was partially compromised by further intersections with the infrastructure for the construction of the railway viaduct, thus interrupting direct access from the Castle guarding the Black Gate. Despite the development of the contemporary city has affected the preservation of the ancient fortified palimpsest, a strong consolidated link is still maintained by the sedimentation of values of material and immaterial culture. The proposed contribution intends to present this process of integration between fortified structure and city highlighting today the state of the art, the conservation, restoration and enhancement initiatives undertaken in the last forty years.
