Abstract:

During the fall of 2007 Uppsala University gave the course “Projekt DV”. As a result of this class a publishing tool for real-time media came to be ShiShi TV. The purpose of this application was to introduce a new way to reach out to people. This was done with a video player on the Internet and a second one placed in a regular mobile phone. To render this possible some different languages were used. C# was used to write the PC-client which records and splits the material into small video pieces, to later transmit them to the ShiShi-server. Viewers from the Internet met an Adobe Flash-based video player which was placed on a PHP-page and used a MySQL-server to communicate with the ShiShi-server. And to view the contents on the mobile phone a Java ME-application was created.

This degree project has its focus on introducing an application that from a mobile phone can act as a publisher of data into the ShiShi-network.

To narrow the width of this project, the decision of targeting one specific mobile phone was made. By making a compilation of current mobile phones, I could draw the conclusion that the Nokia N95 with the Symbian S60 OS was the most suitable deviceas a test and target device for this project.

In the end of this degree project we could show that by using the same approach as the PC-client, we were able to send media in real-time, however with a much larger gap between the video files.

Toleno, Robban Anthony John. "Skilled eating : knowledge of food in Yichu's Shishi liutie, a Buddhist encyclopedia from tenth-century China." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/52875.

Full text
Abstract:
A common approach in studies of food and religion is to understand food taboos as emerging out of a symbolic system based on notions of the sacred. Religion is understood in this view to construct meaning on the basis of symbolism, which is grounded in sacred authority. In Chinese Buddhist discourse on eating contained in a tenth-century Buddhist encyclopedia, however, in place of food taboos one finds a doctrine of equanimity and moderation in eating. Using the Chinese Buddhist encyclopedia Shishi liutie as source, I argue that Chinese Buddhists framed the morality of eating not by sacral authority but by a notion of skill. This theoretical frame describes Buddhist ethics generally: kuśala (Ch. shan 善) is that which is skillful because it is wholesome, good, virtuous, or meritorious; and akuśala (Ch. bushan 不善) is that which is unskillful, because it is unwholesome or lacking in virtue. Viewing morality as a problem of skill helps explain the variation of interpretations on how to best eat as a Buddhist, which are found in different Buddhist writings. Buddhist teachings on food are provisional forms of knowledge rather than authoritative pronouncements. Most central to Buddhist attitudes on food in the Shishi liutie are proper knowledge and proper attitude––both of which allow individuals to skillfully obtain the benefits of eating while avoiding pitfalls such as gluttony and illness. By highlighting skill over sacral authority, I question the commonly held notion that religious knowledge is by definition fundamentally symbolic. In medieval China, Buddhist knowledge of eating was practical and provisional, evolving with society to meet contemporary needs.

Alene, Anne C. "Shirai Seiichi| Japan's poetic modernist." Thesis, California State University, Long Beach, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10099856.

Full text
Abstract:

Shirai Seiichi’s education in the context of the interwar events influenced his path and molded him into a defender of idealism. Starting from the early evolution of his ideas, Shirai’s significant concepts are outlined to show how they stood apart from and challenged the Japanese modernist debates over the architectural responses to war and industrialization. Examples of Shirai’s early work along with surrounding historical events show how Shirai’s perceptions of the use of space and its manifestation in architecture, based on Kantian ideas of a priori creation, contradicted orthodox modernist architectural theory and practice. Shirai’s evolving theories and their impact on his design are introduced through his early training and related projects. However, it is his unrealized plan for the Genbakud? that is analyzed as primary evidence for the idea that Shirai was the only mid-twentieth century Japanese architect who could effectively express the sad destiny of the nuclear age. Last, specific examples of Shirai’s mid to late career work to demonstrate how his conceptual framework evolved. Interviews, commentary, and theoretical analyses of his works show his unique trajectory and role in contrast to his modernist colleagues, and provide insight into Shirai’s investigation into the universality and potential of the human spirit (fuhen no anima). Finally, recent discussion about constructing the Genbakud? based on Shirai’s blueprints raise the idea that Shirai’s early ideals are now ready to be presented in the post-modernist age.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1988.
Bibliography: leaves 96-98.
If modernism in architecture is based on a rational, objective approach, Sei'ichi Shirai was a unique architect who created his own subjective value system, which resulted in isolating him from the modern movement. Educated both in Japan and in Europe, Shirai incorporated what he saw as the existential quality of western architecture into his own original designs. His subjective judgement guided the choice of trans-cultural and transhistorical architectural elements, and arranged them in a dialectic manner. This thesis examines Shirai's designs in the terms of their internal conflicts with tradition, such as those of Egypt and Greece, Shintoism and Buddhism, Jo-mon and Yayoi, and stone masonry and wood carpentry. The attitude was quite different from that of so-called modern architects, since Shirai did not deal with systematic spatial integration. Shirai's architecture emerged like an inevitable creation that was destined to exist. As a result, proponents of modernism who think of architecture in the context of the environment and who create space analytically in terms of functions and compositions, failed to appreciate his efforts. His work has the quality of so-called Post Modern architecture already in the 1950s, but his insights, being too early, failed to win him wide recognition.

Warner, Meghan McLaughlin. "Shibui : Japan chic and post World War II American modernism." Diss., University of Iowa, 2010. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/3212.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the United States' interactions with Japan between 1945 and 1965 to demonstrate how global processes have transformed American culture at home, as well as exporting it abroad. Through U.S. political, military and economic involvement - including postwar occupation, subsequent maintenance of military bases, and the opening of markets to Japanese exports - Americans gained unprecedented exposure to Japan and its culture. At the same time, Cold War pressure to engage other "free world" nations provided impetus to try and understand foreign cultures, like Japan's. While Americans across the economic spectrum took an interest in their new ally, it was members of the middle and upper classes who most typically embraced the Japanese arts of flower arranging, bonsai, filmmaking, architecture, and landscape gardening, and the philosophy of Zen Buddhism. Many argued that Japanese culture reflected tastes and beliefs that they valued, including understatedness, an appreciation of nature, and a desire for serenity; they described these qualities using the borrowed term "shibui." In knowledgeable circles, the word became shorthand for a particular type of Japan-based aesthetic that embraced the design principles of modernism (clean lines, efficient use of space), while in other ways running counter to industrial modernity. For example ikebana flower arrangements were praised for their minimalism, and the fact that practicing the art was supposed to provide respite from the harried pace of the 20th century life. An appreciation for Japanese culture, or the use of Japan-inspired aesthetics in the way a person decorated or dressed, came to signify a certain kind of modernist refinement in postwar U.S. society. Consequently many suburbanites found shortcuts toward incorporating Japanese culture into their lives which enabled them to appear more stylish and cosmopolitan, without altering their lifestyle significantly. However, there were some components of Japanese culture that shibui enthusiasts conveniently ignored, and other uses to which it could be put, as demonstrated by Godzilla movies and Beat Zen. Taken together, each case study presented here reveals processes of transmission and translation in an often-overlooked direction, as well as uncovering previously neglected connections between U.S. policies abroad and the shifting layers of class and social identity formation at home.

Abstract:
The Tunisian Berber (or Shilha) vernaculars are among the least described Afroasiatic (Hamito-Semitic) languages to this day. Although they have been provisionally assigned to the North-Berber group within the Berber branch of Afroasiatic, their immediate affiliation remains an open question. The principal task of this present work is to describe the phonology, morphology and syntax of Douiret. Less central to the aims of the study is the analysis of the basic wordstores of the three surviving Shilha varieties which include Douiret, Chninni (or Chenini) and Ouirsighen (Jerba). The Shilha variety of Douiret is chosen for this study because it still retains some fundamental elements of Berber structure which are not very dissimilar to other Berber languages such as Kabyle and Tamazight. The research shows that Tunisian Berber still survives today, but its future remains uncertain in the face of the forces of urbanisation, economic migration and lack of government support all of which may contribute hypothetically to its likely death. This study will be pursued with reference to the social and cultural context of the Tunisian Berber vernaculars. Research on the nature of language contact bewtween Tunisian Arabic and Shilha is practically non-existent and in this study, is a secondary concern. The strong influence of the local Arabic superstratum on Shilha in phonology, morphology, syntax and lexis is also investigated, as well as the presence of Berber elements in the distinctive Arabic dialect of Tunisia. As the thesis title suggests, this study should not be taken as the last word on Berber in Tunisia. The little available data on Berber in Tunisia makes the task harder in establishing a clear picture of its structure and relationship with other Berber languages such as Kabyle and Tamazight.

Abstract:
In Japanese history, the Meiji period (1868-1912) is known as one of transition between the pre-modern nation, governed by shoguns and a tigh social hierarquy, and a modern State, endowed with a Constitution and greater citizenship. This change of paradingsignals that all spheres were affected during this transition. In the case of culture and literature, there began anew, intense exchange with the Western world and its artistic and cultural forms. Thus, painting, sculputeand music were reformed and renewed due to the new impact. Regarding literature it was no different: the tradition of the European novel breaks the scene of Japanese letters, causing a new arrangement of genres, forms and themes. We intend to analyse heresome of these displacements and shifts, always bearing in mind their departing point. That is to say, this is an historical approach to the renewal of Japanese literature. In order to do so, we shall first study the importation of European fiction to Japan through the means of translation. This is a step of fundamental importance in the formation of modern Japanese literature, since it established directionsas to tone and diction of the new fiction, as well as its relation to the native tradition (that isto say, to the so-called classical literature). Secondly, we will try to demostrate the emergence of the narrator as a textual function of the narrative, opposed to the traditional explicit author of pre-modern fiction. The establishment of a neutral narrator is the most important step in the reform offiction we here present. We tried to offerdetailed examples of this transformation. Lastly, we focusedon the novel Ukigumo(1887), by Futabatei Shimei (1864-1909) as an example of work created during this period of reform. We tried to show the authors hesitation regarding the role of the narrator as well as the development of plot. We also tried, as much as possible, to insert the work in its historical context, so as to lead to a better understanding of its structure and our interpretation of it.

Full text
Abstract:
Regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (rr-P3HT) is one of the promising materials for plastic electronic applications. Understanding as well as controlling the structure and morphology of the active layer is essential to improve the device efficiency. Highly crystalline and highly oriented rr-P3HT thin films can be obtained via directional epitaxial crystallization (DEC) in 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene (TCB). In this dissertation, we present the benefits of DEC method to (i) determine the crystal structure of rr-P3HT and (ii) to study shish-kebab fibers, an alternative morphology of rr-P3HT. The first part of this dissertation is related to the structural analysis of rr-P3HT form-I by using electron diffraction analysis on the epitaxied film. Furthermore, the modification of side chain conformation is used to improve the structural model. Finally, the determination protocol is also applied to resolve the preliminary crystal structure of rr-P3HT form II prepared by self-seeding method. The second part of thisdissertation is related to highly oriented shish-kebab fibers of rr-P3HT prepared by epitaxial crystallization in a mixture of TCB and pyridine. The investigations of growth kinetics and orientation of P3HT chains in the fiber are performed in order to determine the optimization of preparation conditions and growth mechanism of the fibers. In addition, the effect of molecular weight on the formation of the fibers is investigated. Finally, the charge transport properties of the fibers are measured by using the field effect transistor configuration

Hendricks, Harlan Judson. "Revision of the tribe Serrolecaniini Shinji (Pseudococcidae) with discussion on other "legless" mealybugs." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29327.

Full text
Abstract:
Of the estimated 1100 species of mealybugs, approximately 6% are described as possessing degenerative legs and antennae in the adult female developmental stage or having lost these structures altogether. Fifteen genera composing 63 species are often separated into their own taxonomic group based on these vestigial features (e.g., Sphaerococcinae), and are collectively known as the "legless" mealybugs. A comparative morphological analysis of adult females was undertaken to clarify the taxonomic placement of these species and to determine their relationships. Methods were included on collecting, preserving, slide-mounting, and measuring specimens, and on preparing illustrations. Keys to genera and species of "legless" mealybugs were developed. Reduction or loss of legs and antennae apparently occurred convergently in response to similar environmental conditions and was not found supportive of homogeneity in the "legless" group as a whole. However, the genera Chaetococcus Maskell, Idiococcus Takahashi & Kanda, Kermicus Newstead, Serrolecanium Shinji, Tangicoccus Kozar & Walter, and a newly established genus share many characteristics and were treated as the tribe Serrolecaniini Shinji. The adult females of 13 species contained in these genera were redescribed, with illustrations produced for 12. A phylogenetic analysis of the tribe showed that converse to simplification in appendages, adaptations in other features (e.g., latero-projecting lobes and a caudally-directed vulva) probably developed to increase reproductive success and survivorship. The genera Acinococcus Williams, Antonina Signoret, Antoninoides Ferris, Cypericoccus Williams, Nesticoccus Tang, Paludicoccus Ferris, Parapaludicoccus Mamet, Peridiococcus Williams, Pseudantonina Green, and Sphaerococcus Maskell are not closely related to one another or to members of the tribe Serrolecaniini based on adult female morphology. These 10 genera and their type species were redescribed, and illustrations produced for all but Nesticoccus sinensis Tang. Comments or redescriptions are provided for the 21 additional species that comprise these genera; however, the taxonomic placement of 18 additional species erroneously assigned to Pseudantonina and Sphaerococcus is uncertain. Lectotypes were designated for Antonina crawi Cockerell, A. graminis Parrott, A. phragmitis Marchal, A. purpurea Signoret, A. waterstoni Newstead, Jdiococcus bambusae Takahashi & Kanda, Pseudantonina bambusae Green, Pseudolecanium disticlium Kuwana, and Sphaerococcus ethelae Fuller. A replacement name was proposed for the junior homonym Antoninella Sulc. The species names Antonina anceps Green, Antonina maritima Green, and Jdiococcus maanshanensis Tang & Wu are considered junior synonyms. Two species of Serrolecanium were described, and a new genus was established for the placement of Serrolecanium jiuhuaensis Wu and Serrolecanium sasae (Siraiwa). Six new name combinations are also made.

Abstract:
Director Anno Hideaki's series Neon Genesis Evangelion caused a sensation when it first aired on TV Tokyo in 1995 and has become one of the most influential anime ever made. Since its premiere, fans across the globe have debated the possible interpretations of the complex plot, but little has been said about how composer Sagisu Shiro's score might contribute to understanding the series. Anno's rehabilitation in a Jungian clinic and subsequent personal study of human psychology plays heavily into understanding the main character Ikari Shinji, and music has much to contribute to appreciating Shinji's view of the world. Shinji is an impressionable fourteen-year old boy, so his musical interpretations of the people and things around him do not always match reality. Sagisu's music gives the viewers welcome insight into Shinji's thoughts and feelings as he matures throughout the series.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the concepts of history and tradition in modern Japan, with an emphasis on the writings of Sei'ichi Shirai (1905--1983). Although Shirai has been considered as one of the most important architects of 20th century Japan, he has also been treated as an obscure figure, no doubt partly because of the enigmatic quality of his writings. A major element that contributed to his obscure status and set him apart from his contemporaries was his understanding of history and tradition.
The introductory essay examines the concept of tradition prevalent around Shirai's time: how it was constructed by an a posteriori writing of history and in what ways this is complicated by Shirai's writings. The second portion of the thesis is an annotated translation of two of Shirai's texts demonstrating his attempts to disclose the a priori principles inherent in the unfolding of tradition through history.

This thesis examines an unstudied pair of eight-paneled Japanese rakuchurakugaizu screens donated by Dr. Robert H. Shiomi to the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA). Rakuchu-rakugaizu (Scenes in and Out of the Capital) was a popular painting genre that developed over the late sixteenth to seventeenth centuries. In contrast to most accepted scholarly views of this genre, I believe the Shiomi screens are void of political intentions and function as souvenirs. Closely comparing the visual traits to other known examples and contemporary travel guides demonstrates the shift in focus to entertainment and famous sites in the capital available to Kyoto's citizens and visitors alike. Kyoto's history, the prevalence of travel that came with a reunified Japan during the Tokugawa hegemony, and the identification of activities, temples, and shrines within the screens solidifies this argument. This facilitates a nuanced understanding of this painting genre and demonstrates alternative approaches for its study.

Patil, Nilesh. "Flow induced crystallisation of polyethylene in presence of nanoparticles." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2010. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/6541.

Full text
Abstract:
Polymeric systems become increasingly complicated and multifunctional if they involve a larger level of structural complexity. In the last couple of decades the level of interest has gradually shifted from the μm-scale to the nm-scale region, for instance, systems having at least one structural size below 100nm, e.g. nanocomposites. The physical properties of polymers such as crystallisation, tensile modulus, impact strength and viscosity are strongly influenced by the presence of additives in the polymer matrix. Semicrystalline polymers comprise nearly two-thirds of all synthetic polymers. These are processed to form films, fibers, and moulded articles using operations such as extrusion, moulding, fiber spinning, film blowing etc. During these processes, the polymer melt is subjected to complex and intense flow fields (shear or elongational) after which the polymer crystallises. The morphology of the semicrystalline polymer in the final product and subsequently its properties and quality, depend on the manner in which the polymer crystallises from the flowing melt. The subject is continuously driven by the quest to understand the molecular mechanism of flow induced crystallisation; nevertheless, the flow induced crystallisation in presence of nanofillers has received little attention. The thesis deals with the crystallisation studies of polymer molecules during shear in presence of nanofillers (viz. single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) and zirconia particle) having different aspect ratio. For this purpose, the polyethylene (PE) consisting of desired molar mass and molar mass distribution within the processing range is utilised. The morphology of semicrystalline polymer is revealed using time resolved X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) techniques. The rheological aspects of polymer melt in presence of nanoparticles are manifested. In chapter 2, the effect of SWCNTs on the crystallisation kinetics of polymers has been studied with and without application of shear rate. The shear rate effect on the formation of shish-kebab structures in the polymer containing SWCNTs is investigated. The effect of shear rates on the stretching of long chains of PE is verified using the approach involving the use of Deborah number. The study reveals the significance of SWCNTs on crystallisation of PE. In chapter 3, the influence of zirconia nanoparticles on crystal orientation of polymers is studied. Enhanced crystallisation kinetics is observed due to presence of zirconia nanoparticles. Overall crystal orientation is improved as a result of zirconia nanoparticles in the polymer matrix. In chapter 4 of the thesis, the role of broad molecular weight distribution of PE in formation of oriented (shish-kebab) structures is demonstrated. The presence of nanoparticles of different aspect ratios and binding efficiency with polymer on the formation of highly oriented structures in the early stage crystallisation is verified. The study reveals the significant role of SWCNTs in shish-kebab structure formation as compared to zirconia nanoparticles. Further, the insight on the selective adsorption of polymer chains to the nanoparticles is provided. In chapter 5 of the thesis, the molecular interaction between polymer and nanoparticles under shear above the equilibrium point (T = 141.2°C) is investigated. The study reveals the major role of SWCNTs with high aspect ratio, in the stability of flow induced precursor (FIP) and formation of extended chain crystals, as a result of strong interaction with PE molecules. On contrary, the poor interaction of Zirconia particles having low aspect ratio, with PE molecules prohibits molecular chain extension.

Full text
Abstract:
Since its inception in 2002, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) has achieved only limited success in implementing its goals, especially in rural sections of India. There appears little basic awareness of the policy, not only among the members of the community but those involved in local administration and the teachers employed under SSA. With SSA's mandate for community involvement in policy implementation, the purpose of this research is to seek to understand if and how community involvement is effective in the local-level educational leadership and, if so, how it helps in the process of implementing SSA to ensure greater success in access and quality of education. The research utilises a qualitative case study methodology to gather in-depth data from local-level educational leaders within SSA's management structure in two rural villages in Odisha. Documents were analysed and used as supportive evidence to the data. The analysis of both case studies generated three major themes: management structure that does not foster effective community participation; dominance, both institutional and social, that leaves little scope for inclusion of the marginalised in the implementation process; and how support from the government and policy-makers that is made available to the community is insufficient in terms of resources and accountability procedures. The study makes recommendations to: policy-makers to make changes in the way policies should be contextualised in their time frames and promoted; policy evaluators, government planners and those issuing checks and controls at the local level to strengthen the implementation process and work out better ways of involving communities to be part of the local-level leadership within the implementation process; and community members, especially the marginalised, so they have the chance to reflect and express their honest opinions. The process enables them to understand the legalities of their position and the responsibilities that were being ignored because of their tokenistic position. The thesis makes suggestions to empower both people and systems.

Abstract:
Waterpipe tobacco smoking has migrated from being a custom of some cultures to becoming a staple around college campuses. The social nature and flavored tobacco encourage initiation in this tobacco naïve age group. The study was a sequential mixed method design, employing primary data collection and analysis of a random sample of university students who live on campus at a single university. The study involved observations (N=6), intercept interviews with smokers and nonsmokers (N=63), three focus groups (N=31), and an online survey (N=288). Findings were centered on the constructs of the Theory of Reasoned Action by Ajzen and Fishbein (1975), who propose there are specific precursors that lead to intention to perform a behavior. The data suggested that attitudes were more positively correlated with intention to smoke waterpipe tobacco than subjective norm. Attitude is influenced by outcome expectancies. The data suggest that positive outcome expectancies are influenced primarily by the social nature of hookah smoking and other perceived positive benefits. Negative health effects and family/culture were also influential, albeit to a lesser extent. Development of interventions focused on an attitudinal shift may help to decrease uptake and continuation of waterpipe tobacco smoking in this population.

Zheng, Xiucai, and Xiucai Zheng. "A Comparison of the Representations of Women in Zuozhuan and Shiji." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/12471.

Abstract:
From Chunqiu and Zuozhuan to Shiji, women have experienced a downgrade of their formal status in historical records. In Shiji, women, the wives of dukes, lost their formal equality with their duke husbands in terms of being written into state history, as we see in Chunqiu. Their activities, including marriage, returning home, visits, and death, disappeared from Sima Qian’s history for the Spring and Autumn period, which focuses on the activities of male members of ruling lineages. A positive representation of women’s wisdom, eloquence, and authority is no longer in the interest of nor taken as a ritual part of history writing in Shiji. In the terms of representation of women, especially those from the Spring and Autumn period, in Zuozhuan and Shiji, Zuozhuan gave fuller representation of women than Shiji and its attitude toward women was more positive in comparison to the latter. First, Zuozhuan in many examples presented women as having authority, agency and initiative; in the Shiji versions of these stories, the roles of women were reduced in order to strengthen the agency of and focalization through the male members of a ruling lineage toward a goal of a linear logic of succession. Second, Shiji stressed the disruptive role of women in state affairs by intensively preserving the stories in Zuozhuan that associated women with political disasters and emergencies. Third, Zuozhuan had a non-gendered approach to the effect of women’s wisdom, knowledge and eloquence; it left space for complexity of characterization for women. In contrast, Shiji and Lienü Zhuan, where these stories in Zuozhuan were transmitted, emphasized a patterned understanding of women and produced gender role types. With the representation of women in Shiji, the effect of the agency of women in history is patterned. In Shiji, women’s agency is more closely connected to political disasters and negative political situations. In the limited representation of positive heroines, their good roles came from their virtue in being self-restrictive and submissive. It implies as a historical teaching in Shiji that the limitation of the political autonomy of women is a way to promise the success of lineage and tradition.

Martin, Nicolas. "Identification de SHISA3 comme gène médiateur de la transition épithélio-mésenchymateuse dans le cancer de la prostate résistant au docetaxel." Thesis, Paris 11, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA11T057/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and the third leading cause of cancer mortality in France. Since 2004, docetaxel is the standard treatment for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). However, nearly half of treated patients develop resistance to chemotherapy. The aim of my thesis is to identify molecular predictors to select patients who will respond to docetaxel chemotherapy. My second goal is to identify new therapeutic targets to overcome this resistance, by studying the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of resistance. To this purpose, genes and microRNAs expression profiles were established in several cellular models of docetaxel-resistant prostate cancer. The integration of these high-throughput data suggested that the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) was involved in the mechanism of docetaxel resistance. Deciphering the EMT mechanism observed in our cellular models allowed the identification of SHISA3 as a new regulator of this process. SHISA3 is highly under-expressed in docetaxel resistant cells which present a mesenchymal phenotype. Interestingly, SHISA3 is also down-regulated in a large variety of human tumors. The inhibition of SHISA3 in sensitive cells induced a complete EMT, characterized by loss of cellular junctions, expression of mesenchymal transcription factors, and increased migratory capacity. The study of its mechanism of action allowed us to highlight the interaction of SHISA3 with TGFβRII. We showed in docetaxel-resistant cells that pharmacological inhibition of the TGFβ signalling pathway induces sensitization to docetaxel, demonstrating the importance of the regulation of this pathway in the resistance to chemotherapy. In parallel, we developed a docetaxel-resistant prostate cancer model in mice. The establishment of this model is critical for the preclinical validation of new targeted therapies. Tumors obtained from this new model are characterized by the under-expression of SHISA3 and the expression of EMT markers. This model will allow the validation of the therapeutic potential of co-treatment with docetaxel and TGFβ signalling pathway inhibitors in vivo. Interestingly, we observed that SHISA3 expression is correlated with response to docetaxel treatment in vivo. These results suggest that SHISA3 could be a biomarker of response to docetaxel chemotherapy

Man, Ka Cheong. "Interpretation of Chinese modern poetry in light of a proposed theory of Shiyi." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/10659.

Full text
Abstract:
Modern Chinese poetry has since its inception been subjected to unfavourable comments as compared to classical Chinese poetry, which can be construed as the result of the alleged unintelligibility problem encountered in interpretation of poetry. This thesis attempts to find out if it is justified to attribute modern poetry’s poorer reception to the alleged unintelligibility problem. Accordingly, a purported criterion of poetry assessment, shiyi 詩意 (literally “poeticalness”), as well as a theoretical framework based on shiyi, is formulated primarily in light of Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson’s relevance theory and Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutics. Whereas relevance theory is a cognitive pragmatic approach focusing on recovery of meanings of an utterance by tracing the authorial intention through relevance, Ricoeur’s hermeneutics sees textual interpretation as relying on a hermeneutical circle through which a reader produces a world of the text, itself also a means by which the reader attains or enriches self-understanding. To incorporate the speaker-centred relevance theory, Ricoeur’s comparatively reader-oriented model, as well as other related text-focused approaches into the proposed framework, the central concept of shiyi is put forward with a view to bridging the distance between emphasis on author, reader and text. The framework formulated should be more applicable to literary texts and less vulnerable to the intriguing authorship problematic. In addition, a “subtlety-unintelligibility continuum” is posited and developed within the framework to identify and account for the differences in shiyi, as well as to provide a clear characterisation of shiyi. The framework thus represents an interface between the linguistic, the philosophical and the literary perspectives. The overall objectives of this thesis are: (1) to prove that the proposed theory of shiyi and its underlying framework are theoretically and practically valid by putting the framework to the test through thoroughly analysing a number of representative modern Chinese poems, and (2) to justify or refute the propriety of attributing modern poetry’s poorer reception to the alleged unintelligibility problem based on findings of the analysis of poetry mentioned in (1).

There are five points in this thesis.First, it illustrates the reason of pointing out this theme and the researching result of relevant theme in current academia.Second, it discusses the background including Benshi shi (本事詩) of theory of shishi(詩史) in the beginning and then defines the range of theory of shishi in the Tang Dynasty. Next, it discusses the appearance time of theory of shishi and explores the components of shishi in Du Fu’s(杜甫) poetry, and then summarizes the Tang critics’ realization of shishi.Third, it discusses the connotation in interpretation method from three points of view so as to realize how the Song critics interpret shishi. One is the Song critics’ attitude of following and criticizing the shishi viewpoints from the Tang critics, another one is the development from the biography of Du Fu in Xin Tang Shu(新唐書)the other one is interpreting shishi from the viewpoint of Du Fu’s poetry annotation in the Song Dynasty.Fourth, it discusses the connotation of theory of shishi in the Song Dynasty from different angles, including history, poetry, authors, readers, and Song loyalist. Then, we realize why the Song critics interpret shishi from these angles by observing the expectation sight of the time. We derive the development process from the Tang Dynasty to the Song Dynasty by comparing the difference interpretation of shishi between the Tang and Song critics.Fifth, in addition to summary, we point out the limitation and follow-up relevant theme if development process is used as researching angle.

The Meiji Restoration was a turbulent era yet full of outstanding heroes. It was said that heroes were created by the trend of times. However, during the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate Era, not only the Samurais but also the master-less-samurais, wealthy farmers, and merchants participated actively in organizing a " Somo group" at this historical moment. This group was formed mostly by local civilians . Some of them chose to join the new government to fight in the Boshin War, and some of them chose to remain with the Tokugawa Shogunate. The past studies of Meiji Restoration mainly focused on the Tokugawa Shogunate and domains, or the battle between the Imperial and the Tokugawa Shogunate. Recently, some of the studies had switched the focus to the activities of the plebs. Nevertheless, these studies still tended to concentrate on fields of groups and people who were anti-Tokugawa Shogunate. On the other hand, the portion of the Tokugawa Shogunate's supporters were almost overlooked. The author had tired to discuss and analyze, via historial documents, the commissioner of the Shinsengumi, Kondo Isami, a Somo-Shishi(loyalist). This essay was consisted of 5 chapters and 17 sections. It first explained the motivation of study, reviewed other related studies, and then explain the methods used and the essay structure. In addition, the essay noted the politic background at the end of Tokugawa Shogunate. Through out Kondo Isami’s political activities, the essay tried to specify why Kondo Isami, an non-samurai, showed up in this historical stage and the reasons that he supported the Tokugawa Shogunate. In the analyzing process, the Author classified Kondo Isami into the Somo-Shishi category. He was in the center of the political society . Kondo Isami had the same ideal of Sonnojoi (Revere the Emperor and Expel the Barbarians) as the other Somo-Shishi. The author realized that Kondo Isami’s behavior , however, was differed from the other Somo-Shishi. This difference was not caused by the ideology of Sonnojoi, but was mainly due to Kondo Isami’s characteristics and political judgment.

Mohammed, Heba Tallah. "The Efficacy of Viewing Health Warnings on Shisha Smoking among Shisha Smokers." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/7419.

Full text
Abstract:
As shisha smoking is increasing globally, the need for a critical action to control shisha smoking consumption becomes crucial. Despite the success of cigarette warning labels in increasing smokers' awareness of the negative health effects of smoking and in motivating smokers to quit, nothing is known about the potential impact health warning labels may have on shisha users. The current study investigated the perception of effectiveness of text-only versus graphic warning among shisha smokers. This study sought to examine the impact of viewing health warning labels on perceived susceptibility and severity of shisha smoking health hazards, on motivating intentions to quit, and on changing the pattern of shisha smoking. Eligible participants first completed an online baseline questionnaire, and were then randomly assigned to one of three conditions:a control condition, in which they viewed nutrition labels (n=100) , or one of two experimental groups in which they viewed Text- only warning labels (n=117), or they viewed Graphic warning labels (n=125). In each of these three conditions, participants viewed six health warning labels and rated them using likert scale questions immediately following each label. Two weeks later, participants were invited to complete an online follow-up questionnaire. The findings indicate that Graphic tobacco warnings grab participants' attention and elicit unfavourable emotional reactions. Although there was a relatively little impact of viewing health warnings on subsequent shisha use, Graphic warnings significantly improved some of the participants' health knowledge .In addition, Graphic warnings significantly increased smokers' beliefs that shisha is harmful to health and dangerous to non-smokers. Patterns of the findings revealed that quit intentions were relatively higher among those who viewed Graphic warning labels. To our knowledge, this study is the first to examine the effect of health warnings on shisha smokers. Overall, findings provide modest support for the efficcacy of shisha warnings on establised users. Findings imply that packaging and labelling policies for shisha and shisha products require additional development. Further examination of specific themes and contents of health warnings directed specifically to shisha smokers in different cultural settings will be critical to ensure the relevance of health warnings in distinct cultural settings.

The Shishui community has a wealth of resources and cultural history. In 1999, the 9/21 earthquake shook their houses and caused severe damage to various buildings and facilities. At the end ofT 2001, the residents established the Community Development Association, to create a showcase for agricultural tourism in 2001. Apart from achieving the highest rate of reconstruction of all the rural settlements after the 9/21 catastrophe, it was also honored with the “Classic Rural Village A” award” by the government in 2007. However, as the community development went on, factors such as the withdrawal of external advisor teams, the discontinuation of internal talent training, and the dysfunction of community organizations, has meant all of the funding has now dried up and community development in the Shishui is now idle. When communities are faced with obstacles to development, how should the ability of communities, to recover from those impacts, be assessed? What are the assessment factors? This study uses the Shishui community as itsthe research field, using the theory of community resilience, through the evaluation of in-depth interviews with professional groups and community residents, to assess the resilience factors of the community development. Then, the Fuzzy Delphi Method (FDM) was used to obtain the indices of the resilience of the community, classified into five dimensions, which are: "sustainable development ability", "organizational leadership ability", "financial economic ability", "community cohesion", and "network resource capability". Finally, Similarity-based Importance-Performance Analysis (SBIPA) was used to analyze the satisfaction and importance of the various indicators of resilience relating to the residents of the Shishui Community. As a result, a total of 20 issues were considered important, but it was felt that the performances had not reached residents’ expectation. They are: the establishment of an elderly care system, transparency and autonomy of the use of community funds, the establishment of eco-friendly farming and pollution control, and the establishment of a mechanism to persuade talented youngsters to return...etc. These are all issues that will be the primary improvement subjects in the future for the community. It is advisable to formulate improvement strategies as soon as possible to enhance the satisfaction of the community residents, in the hope of moving towards a sustainable community. Keywords: Fuzzy Delphi Method (FDM), Similarity-based Importance-Performance Analysis (SBIPA), indicator development, community resilience, expert questionnaire.
