Abstract:
Shishi Matsuri or the Lion Festival is very popular and is often observed in different parts of Japan. Known also as Shishimai or Lion Dance performance, it is a religious festival and an art performance. The fieldwork for this study was carried out in Murashima village, Sugeta town, Ehime prefecture, Japan. The festival is held annually in November and involves everyone in the village. The performers are the local villagers themselves. Although Shishi Matsuri reinforces the sense of belonging, it also creates a sense of collectivity and unity as everyone joins in. Continuation of a tradition of this kind is bound with a number of difficulties and challenges. Financial issues, decreasing young population and natural disasters are but a few such matters faced every year. This study aims to understand the reasons and motivations that make it possible for the community members to carry on with the tradition of the festival despite challenges and difficulties.

Abstract:
</p> <p>&nbsp;</p><p>Since Meng Qi from the Tang Dynasty proposed the concept of &quot;Shishi&quot; (Poetry-History), multiple interpretations, most of them were on an affirmative level, had been created, such as &quot;narrate&quot;, &quot;record as the author has witnessed &quot;, &quot; loyal and patriotic &quot; etc. By the time of late Ming and early Qing Dynasties, Wang Fuzhi (1619-1692) ’s viewpoint stood out by criticized not only part of the interpretations but the whole concept of &quot;Shishi&quot;. When dealing with the relation between &quot;history&quot; and &quot;poetry&quot;, Wang Fuzhi’s fundamental proposition was to defy history&rsquo;s violation of poetic form. Wang Fuzhi stressed that poetry should express &quot;Xing&quot; (human nature) and &quot;Qing&quot; (feelings). The history’s violation of poetic form would undermine the expression of Qing and therefore weaken the power of it, which could enhance the cultivation of people and help brace up the national power. Once the history was emphasized egregiously in poetic form, the essence of poetry would be vandalized. Essentially, Wang Fuzhi endowed the poetic form of a unique meaning due to his consciousness of Confucianism. He hoped that the power of poetry would guide Qing to Xing. This was his poetic ideal to seek moral potential in the aesthetics of poetry. Therefore, he rebelled at the concept of &quot;Shishi&quot; which impeded destructively. This paper analyzes Wang Fuzhi’s criticism of &quot;Shishi&quot;, discusses the reason for his unique critical attitude amid the atmosphere of this concept during the late Ming and early Qing and explains his interpretations of poetry.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Abstract:
This research is descriptive qualitative research with the object of research manga entitled "Shishi mo Kobamazu" (2014) by Kiriyu Kiyoi. This manga is a boy's same-sex love genre that generally has a formula for the roles of Seme and Uke. The role of seme will be considered to have all the masculine traits and the role of uke to have all the feminine traits. In the Shishi mo Kobamazu manga, the roles of Seme and Uke are given a different role concept from manga boy's love in general resulting in a deconstruction of the role concepts of Seme and Uke. The aim of this research is to describe the deconstruction that occurs and its depiction in literary works so that it can be seen that the construction of gender roles in same-sex love relationships does not have a patent provision and can change according to conditions and times. The method used is a literature study. The theory used in this research is Derrida's deconstruction theory and Butler's performativity. Both theories are used to analyze the form of deconstruction in the roles of seme and uke and to understand the concept of gender roles in same-sex relationships. The results show that the character in this manga can display and form a new identity in their seme and uke roles through the performativity of gender roles in same-sex relationships. The new identity in the form of Seme and Uke is not fixed on one gender trait. Seme can be described as having a petite body and characters like women and uke can be described as having a strong and masculine physique. The roles of Seme and Uke can change according to the identity shown by each character in the manga.

Abstract:
The aim of the study is to study the territory of Mountainous Shirvan, selected as an object of study, date, conditions, sources, susceptibility to change, and other microtoonyms in natural and economic regions as a result of labor and productive activities of people. Research method. Some microtoponyms on the territory of Mountainous Shirvan of the Republic of Azerbaijan have been studied by geographical, historical methods and the method of linguistic analysis. Results. The article reveals the names of the tribe involved in the creation of a number of microtoponyms. For example, Borbor tepesi, Khalaj gerebi, Dallek shishi, Kolany zirvesi, Karaoglanli yaly, etc. On the territory of Mountainous Shirvan of the Azerbaijan Republic there are enough toponyms and microtoponyms bearing the names of different tribes. This is due to the development of these territories by some tribes. It was also conditioned by the natural and geographical conditions and vertical zoning (summer and winter pastures, etc.) of the territory. The article studies the traces of some tribes in the participation of the formation of some microtoponyms and distribution areas, conditions and reasons for their formation and others. for example, Aksakli shishi, Aksakli yolu, Aksakli suvati, Aksakli guneyi, Turan gylyndzhy, Turan tepesi, Yurt Hydyrly, Yurt Khalaj, Yurt Boyat, Karaman dagy, etc. Each microtoponym is of great importance noted in the study. Research shows that there are such microtoponyms that reflect the name of the tribe. Among them there are such as Dallek Shishi, Arab Gerebi, Khalaj Gerebi, Khalaj Yurt, Karaman Dagy, etc. We know that some Arab tribes settled in Shirvan during the Arab occupation. Of these, Arabbaloglan, Arabgardashbeyli, Arabkadim, Arabshamly, Hila and others. The population of Arabgardashbeyli moved from Mountainous Shirvan. Scientific novelty. On the basis of microtoponyms not included in any written literature and preserved in the stone memory of the peoples of the territory, the conditions for the formation of past names are revealed, the geographical position of the territories, the direction of the economy and the name of the tribe.

Pettersson, Andreas. "Mobilstudio för ShiShi TV." Thesis, Uppsala University, Department of Information Technology, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-110349.

Abstract:

During the fall of 2007 Uppsala University gave the course “Projekt DV”. As a result of this class a publishing tool for real-time media came to be ShiShi TV. The purpose of this application was to introduce a new way to reach out to people. This was done with a video player on the Internet and a second one placed in a regular mobile phone. To render this possible some different languages were used. C# was used to write the PC-client which records and splits the material into small video pieces, to later transmit them to the ShiShi-server. Viewers from the Internet met an Adobe Flash-based video player which was placed on a PHP-page and used a MySQL-server to communicate with the ShiShi-server. And to view the contents on the mobile phone a Java ME-application was created.

This degree project has its focus on introducing an application that from a mobile phone can act as a publisher of data into the ShiShi-network.

To narrow the width of this project, the decision of targeting one specific mobile phone was made. By making a compilation of current mobile phones, I could draw the conclusion that the Nokia N95 with the Symbian S60 OS was the most suitable deviceas a test and target device for this project.

In the end of this degree project we could show that by using the same approach as the PC-client, we were able to send media in real-time, however with a much larger gap between the video files.

Toleno, Robban Anthony John. "Skilled eating : knowledge of food in Yichu's Shishi liutie, a Buddhist encyclopedia from tenth-century China." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/52875.

Full text
Abstract:
A common approach in studies of food and religion is to understand food taboos as emerging out of a symbolic system based on notions of the sacred. Religion is understood in this view to construct meaning on the basis of symbolism, which is grounded in sacred authority. In Chinese Buddhist discourse on eating contained in a tenth-century Buddhist encyclopedia, however, in place of food taboos one finds a doctrine of equanimity and moderation in eating. Using the Chinese Buddhist encyclopedia Shishi liutie as source, I argue that Chinese Buddhists framed the morality of eating not by sacral authority but by a notion of skill. This theoretical frame describes Buddhist ethics generally: kuśala (Ch. shan 善) is that which is skillful because it is wholesome, good, virtuous, or meritorious; and akuśala (Ch. bushan 不善) is that which is unskillful, because it is unwholesome or lacking in virtue. Viewing morality as a problem of skill helps explain the variation of interpretations on how to best eat as a Buddhist, which are found in different Buddhist writings. Buddhist teachings on food are provisional forms of knowledge rather than authoritative pronouncements. Most central to Buddhist attitudes on food in the Shishi liutie are proper knowledge and proper attitude––both of which allow individuals to skillfully obtain the benefits of eating while avoiding pitfalls such as gluttony and illness. By highlighting skill over sacral authority, I question the commonly held notion that religious knowledge is by definition fundamentally symbolic. In medieval China, Buddhist knowledge of eating was practical and provisional, evolving with society to meet contemporary needs.

Alene, Anne C. "Shirai Seiichi| Japan's poetic modernist." Thesis, California State University, Long Beach, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10099856.

Full text
Abstract:

Shirai Seiichi’s education in the context of the interwar events influenced his path and molded him into a defender of idealism. Starting from the early evolution of his ideas, Shirai’s significant concepts are outlined to show how they stood apart from and challenged the Japanese modernist debates over the architectural responses to war and industrialization. Examples of Shirai’s early work along with surrounding historical events show how Shirai’s perceptions of the use of space and its manifestation in architecture, based on Kantian ideas of a priori creation, contradicted orthodox modernist architectural theory and practice. Shirai’s evolving theories and their impact on his design are introduced through his early training and related projects. However, it is his unrealized plan for the Genbakud? that is analyzed as primary evidence for the idea that Shirai was the only mid-twentieth century Japanese architect who could effectively express the sad destiny of the nuclear age. Last, specific examples of Shirai’s mid to late career work to demonstrate how his conceptual framework evolved. Interviews, commentary, and theoretical analyses of his works show his unique trajectory and role in contrast to his modernist colleagues, and provide insight into Shirai’s investigation into the universality and potential of the human spirit (fuhen no anima). Finally, recent discussion about constructing the Genbakud? based on Shirai’s blueprints raise the idea that Shirai’s early ideals are now ready to be presented in the post-modernist age.

Nagaya, Toshiaki. "Sei'ichi Shirai and subjective method of synthesis." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/17223.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1988.
Bibliography: leaves 96-98.
If modernism in architecture is based on a rational, objective approach, Sei'ichi Shirai was a unique architect who created his own subjective value system, which resulted in isolating him from the modern movement. Educated both in Japan and in Europe, Shirai incorporated what he saw as the existential quality of western architecture into his own original designs. His subjective judgement guided the choice of trans-cultural and transhistorical architectural elements, and arranged them in a dialectic manner. This thesis examines Shirai's designs in the terms of their internal conflicts with tradition, such as those of Egypt and Greece, Shintoism and Buddhism, Jo-mon and Yayoi, and stone masonry and wood carpentry. The attitude was quite different from that of so-called modern architects, since Shirai did not deal with systematic spatial integration. Shirai's architecture emerged like an inevitable creation that was destined to exist. As a result, proponents of modernism who think of architecture in the context of the environment and who create space analytically in terms of functions and compositions, failed to appreciate his efforts. His work has the quality of so-called Post Modern architecture already in the 1950s, but his insights, being too early, failed to win him wide recognition.

Abstract:
This paper addresses COVID-19 in India, looking at how the interplay of inequality, vulnerability, and the pandemic has compounded uncertainties for poor and marginalised groups, leading to insecurity, stigma and a severe loss of livelihoods. A strict government lockdown destroyed the incomes of farmers and urban informal workers and triggered an exodus of migrant workers from Indian cities, a mass movement which placed additional pressures on the country's rural communities. Elsewhere in the country, lockdown restrictions and pandemic response have coincided with heatwaves, floods and cyclones, impeding disaster response and relief. At the same time, the pandemic has been politicised to target minority groups (such as Muslims, Dalits), suppress dissent, and undermine constitutional values. The paper focuses on how COVID-19 has intersected with and multiplied existing uncertainties faced by different vulnerable groups and communities in India who have remained largely invisible in India's development story. With the biggest challenge for government now being to mitigate the further fall of millions of people into extreme poverty, the brief also reflects on pathways for recovery and transformation, including opportunities for rural revival, inclusive welfare, and community response. This brief is based on a review of existing published and grey literature, and 23 interviews with experts and practitioners from 12 states in India, including representation from domestic and international NGOs, and local civil society organisations. It was developed for the Social Science in Humanitarian Action Platform (SSHAP) by Justin Pickard, Shilpi Srivastava, Lyla Mehta (IDS), and Mihir R. Bhatt. Some of the cases draw on ongoing research of the TAPESTRY project, which explores bottom-up transformations in marginal environments across India and Bangladesh.

Bercovier, Herve, and Paul Frelier. Pathogenic Streptococcus in Tilapia: Rapid Diagnosis, Epidemiology and Pathophysiology. United States Department of Agriculture, October 1994. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/1994.7568776.bard.

Abstract:
Within the project "Pathogenic Streptococcus in Tilapia", gram positive cocci pathogens of fish in Israel and in the United States were characterized. We showed that Streptococcus shiloi, the name for an agent causing septicemic infection in fish, is a junior synonym of Streptococcus iniae and that Enterococcus seriolicida is a junior synonym of Lactococcus garvieae, a causative agent of septicemia and meningo-encephalitis in fish. Molecular epidemiology studies on these two pathogens, based on 16S rDNA sequences and ribotyping showed that although each country had specific clones, S. iniae originated probably from the U.S. and L. garvieae from Japan. PCR assays were developed for both pathogens and applied to clinical samples. S. agalactiael S. difficile was also recognized for the first time in the U.S. in tilapia. Our histopathological studies explained the noted paradox (abundant in vitro growth often accompanied by scant to small numbers of organisms within the meninges in histologic sections of brain) in diagnostic of fish streptococcus. The greatest concentration of cocci were consistently observed within macrophages infiltrating the extrameningeal fibroadipose tissue surrounding the brain within the calvarium. These results also suggests that the primary route of meningeal infection may be extension from the extrameningeal connective tissue rather than meningeal vascular emigration of cocci-containing macrophages. Our work has resulted in a cognizance of streptococcus as fish pathogen which goes beyond the pathology observed in tilapia and is already extended to many aquaculture fish species in Israel and in the United States. Finally, our data suggest that vaccines (bivalent or trivalent) could be developed to prevent most of the damages caused by streptococcus in aquaculture.

Abstract:
Since February 2021, countless lives have been lost in India, which has compounded the social and economic devastation caused by the second wave of COVID-19. The sharp surge in cases across the country overwhelmed the health infrastructure, with people left scrambling for hospital beds, critical drugs, and oxygen. As of May 2021, infections began to come down in urban areas. However, the effects of the second wave continued to be felt in rural areas. This is the worst humanitarian and public health crisis the country has witnessed since independence; while the continued spread of COVID-19 variants will have regional and global implications. With a slow vaccine rollout and overwhelmed health infrastructure, there is a critical need to examine India's response and recommend measures to further arrest the current spread of infection and to prevent and prepare against future waves. This brief is a rapid social science review and analysis of the second wave of COVID-19 in India. It draws on emerging reports, literature, and regional social science expertise to examine reasons for the second wave, explain its impact, and highlight the systemic issues that hindered the response. This brief puts forth vital considerations for local and national government, civil society, and humanitarian actors at global and national levels, with implications for future waves of COVID-19 in low- and middle-income countries. This review is part of the Social Science in Humanitarian Action Platform (SSHAP) series on the COVID-19 response in India. It was developed for SSHAP by Mihir R. Bhatt (AIDMI), Shilpi Srivastava (IDS), Megan Schmidt-Sane (IDS), and Lyla Mehta (IDS) with input and reviews from Deepak Sanan (Former Civil Servant; Senior Visiting Fellow, Centre for Policy Research), Subir Sinha (SOAS), Murad Banaji (Middlesex University London), Delhi Rose Angom (Oxfam India), Olivia Tulloch (Anthrologica) and Santiago Ripoll (IDS). It is the responsibility of SSHAP.
