There is a large and intricate network of trucks, warehouses, stores, and companies that support the transportation and logistics industries in the United States. Different categories of carriers transport shipments of all sizes by utilizing complex tracking systems. Further, there is a network of brokers, consultants, third-party and fourth party logistics providers who organize and integrate these resources and services to provide transportation solutions for any shipment challenge. Solutions are created by integrating the capabilities of several carriers and other transportation service providers. Based on this integration, this thesis proposes a business model that will leverage the existing transportation network in US to provide a low-cost shipping option for residential shippers. It is concluded that the business model is possible with strong industry expertise and powerful database development.

Chang, Chia-Hsun. "Container shipping risk management : a case study of taiwan container shipping industry." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/1590.

Full text
Abstract:
Whilst container shipping has become increasingly important over the past few decades due to its obvious advantages, container shipping companies have faced various risks from different sources in their operations. Systematic academic studies on this topic are few; and in light of this, this study aims to systematically explore and analyse the risks in container shipping operations and to examine the applicable risk mitigation strategies in a logistics perspective, including information flow, physical flow, and payment flow. This thesis uses Taiwan container shipping industry as a case study, and borrows four steps of risk management as the main method, which includes risk identification, risk analysis, risk mitigation strategies identification, and strategies evaluation. In order to ensure the analysis is inclusive and systematic, risk factors and risk mitigation strategies are identified through a related literature review and are validated through a set of interviews. Risk analysis is conducted through using questionnaires, and then through risk ranking, risk matrix, risk mapping, and P-I graph. Risk mitigation strategies are evaluated through classic AHP and fuzzy AHP analysis. A number of significant findings have been obtained. Firstly, 35 risk factors are identified and classified into three categories: risks associated with information flow, risks associated with physical flow, and risks associated with payment flow. After collecting and analysing the risk-factor survey, the results indicate that the risk associated with physical flow has the more significant impact on shipping companies’ operation. However, one risk factor associated with information flow, “shippers hiding cargo information”, has the most significant impact among the 35 risk factors. Secondly, 20 risk mitigation strategies are identified and classified into three categories: intra-organisational strategies, intra-channel strategies, and inter-channel strategies. After collecting the AHP survey and analysing through classic AHP and fuzzy AHP, the result indicates that “slot exchange, slot charter, joint fleet, ship charter with other container shipping companies” is the most important strategy. The main contributions of this thesis include: (1) based on the literature review, there have been no research on risk management in the context of container shipping operation from a broad logistics perspective, and this thesis is the first attempt to fill this research gap; (2) this thesis uses Taiwan shipping industry as a case study to apply the framework, which generates useful managerial insights; (3) the conceptual model of risk management developed in this thesis can be applied to container shipping operations in other countries and regions; (4) compared with several studies using secondary data, this thesis uses empirical data to conduct the risk analysis, and make the results more close to the reality situation in container shipping; (5) in terms of risk analysis, this thesis ranks the total 35 risk factors rather than only identify the most important one, this can be used to be generalised to the whole container shipping companies in Taiwan, or even to the whole world; (6) in terms of risk management, the previous studies usually analyse only the importance of strategies. However, this thesis analyses the results of AHP from three different angles: reducing financial loss, reducing reputation loss, and reducing safety and security incident related loss. This can provide different angles for the managers who are considering different aspects.

Pizzolato, Larissa Anna Vincenza. "Arctic Shipping in Canada: Analysis of Sea Ice, Shipping, and Vessel Track Reconstruction." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/33156.

Abstract:
Declining sea ice area in the Canadian Arctic has gained significant attention with respect to the prospect of increased shipping activities along the Northwest Passage and Arctic Bridge shipping routes. Temporal trend and correlation analysis was performed on sea ice area data for total, first-year ice (FYI), and multi-year ice (MYI), and observed shipping activity within the Vessel Traffic Reporting Arctic Canada Traffic Zone (NORDREG zone) from 1990 to 2012. Relationships between declines in sea ice area and Arctic maritime activity were investigated alongside linkages to warming surface air temperatures (SAT) and an increasing melt season length. Statistically significant increases in vessel traffic were observed on monthly and annual time-scales, coincident with declines in sea ice area. Despite increasing trends, only weak correlations between the variables were identified, suggesting that other non-environmental factors have likely contributed to the observed increase in Arctic shipping activity including tourism demand, community re-supply needs, and resource exploration trends. As a first step towards quantifying spatial variability in shipping patterns, a case study was conducted using 2010 observed shipping data to reconstruct historical shipping routes using a least cost path (LCP) approach. This approach was able to successfully reconstruct vessel tracks compared to an independent data source (Automatic Identification System) to an accuracy of 10.42 km ± 0.67 km over the entire study area. A 25 km gridded product across the entire Canadian Arctic domain was produced for 2010, with this approach now providing a basis to apply this method over the entire record (since 1990) in future studies to investigate long term spatial variability and change of shipping activity across the Canadian Arctic.

In the last decades, the demand for energy is increasing. It is necessary to develop new ways to distribute the energy using economically feasible solutions. In this project an Ultra Large Container Ship is used that can carry more than 12,000 TEUs. Inside each TEU, four cylinders are installed that can store compressed natural gas at 250 bar. Two types of cylinders are tested: cylinders made of steel and cylinders made of carbon fiber. Carbon fiber cylinders were chosen because they are lighter. In addition, two types of compressors are used: centrifugal and reciprocating compressors. Centrifugal compressors are used to increase the initial pressure from 10 bar to 50 bar. Reciprocating compressors are used to increase the pressure from 50 bar to 250 bar. A model is developed using thermodynamics and MATLAB, in order to determine the total power required for a compressor to fill the entire vessel in one or more days. Furthermore, by using valuation metrics, a model is created to find the value of the project and to generate sensitivity analyses. It is concluded that leasing the ships is more profitable than buying them.

Abstract:

Specialists in ergonomics believe that what is good ergonomics is also goodeconomics for many industrial settings. This relationship between ergonomicsand economics is supported by research on several industrial settings. Thisstudy turns to investigate this relationship within the maritime domain.Shipping naturally faces the same work environment problems as commonlyseen on work places ashore. Additionally, there is however a social and culturaldimension to the work environment in what might be the most globalisedindustry of all. This study is performed as a pilot study to a larger project within theeconomics of maritime ergonomics. The aim of this thesis is to review themajor issues in the research of maritime ergonomics and how cost-benefit ofergonomics is calculated in other domains. Furthermore, the thesis also aims atinvestigate which ergonomic factors that are considered the most important bythe shipping industry itself and if the economics of ergonomics is calculated inthe Swedish shipping industry. The review of scientific literature on maritime ergonomics is divided into threeareas of interest: organisation and management, occupational health and safetyand psychosocial work environment. No studies were found on cost-benefitcalculations within shipping. There are however several methods for evaluationand calculation from other domains. The result of the nine qualitativeinterviews shows a predominant occupation in the area of organisation.Important factors mentioned in the interviews that are believed to affect safety, productivity and well-being include leadership and social skills, communication between and within the shorebased organisation and the vessel,as well as knowledge on several levels. A survey among ten Swedish shippingowners shows that beyond the costs of sick-leave, the shipowners do not on aregular basis calculate the costs and benefits of ergonomics.Further research includes a stakeholder analysis; defining the operativemeasurements of productivity, quality and effectiveness for a maritime setting;an accident analysis and the compilation of Best Practise within shipping.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a study of a real fleet deployment problem in liner shipping. In the context of data from Saga Forest Carriers and actual contracts between charterers and shipping companies, an optimization model is developed and implemented. The formulated model exploits the advantages of a heterogeneous fleet, incorporates the requirements concerning fairly evenly spread shipments and facilitates overlapping voyages. By additionally including inventory management and freedom of choice regarding speed, the formulation contributes to the existing literature by presenting a rich model featuring new ways to model several issues. The thesis also presents a heuristic solution approach and evaluates the developed model in comparison with the heuristic and well-known alternative solution methods. The computational studies indicate that a rich and realistic mathematical formulation, emphasizing to maintain the existing flexibility, has a positive effect on the results when solving real fleet deployment problems.

Abstract:
In this study, we employ the global aerosol-climate model ECHAM-HAM to globally assess aerosol indirect effects (AIEs) resulting from shipping emissions of aerosols and aerosol precursor gases. We implement shipping emissions of sulphur dioxide (SO2), black carbon (BC) and particulate organic matter (POM) for the year 2000 into the model and quantify the model’s sensitivity towards uncertainties associated with the emission parameterisation as well as with the shipping emissions themselves. Sensitivity experiments are designed to investigate (i) the uncertainty in the size distribution of emitted particles, (ii) the uncertainty associated with the total amount of emissions, and (iii) the impact of reducing carbonaceous emissions from ships. We use the results from one sensitivity experiment for a detailed discussion of shipping-induced changes in the global aerosol system as well as the resulting impact on cloud properties. From all sensitivity experiments, we find AIEs from shipping emissions to range from −0.32±0.01Wm−2 to −0.07±0.01Wm−2 (global mean value and inter-annual variability as a standard deviation). The magnitude of the AIEs depends much more on the assumed emission size distribution and subsequent aerosol microphysical interactions than on the magnitude of the emissions themselves. It is important to note that although the strongest estimate of AIEs from shipping emissions in this study is relatively large, still much larger estimates have been reported in the literature before on the basis of modelling studies. We find that omitting just carbonaceous particle emissions from ships favours new particle formation in the boundary layer. These newly formed particles contribute just about as much to the CCN budget as the carbonaceous particles would, leaving the globally averaged AIEs nearly unaltered compared to a simulation including carbonaceous particle emissions from ships.

Merchant, Nathan. "Measuring underwater noise exposure from shipping." Thesis, University of Bath, 2014. https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.633173.

Full text
Abstract:
Levels of underwater noise in the open ocean have been increasing since at least the 1960s due to growth in global shipping traffic and the speed and propulsion power of vessels. This rise in noise levels reduces the range over which vocal marine species can communicate, and can induce physiological stress and behavioural responses, which may ultimately have population-level consequences. Although long-term noise trends have been studied at some open-ocean sites, in shallower coastal regions the high spatiotemporal variability of noise levels presents a substantial methodological challenge, and trends in these areas are poorly understood. This thesis addresses this challenge by introducing new techniques which combine multiple data sources for ship noise assessment in coastal waters. These data include Automatic Identification System (AIS) ship-tracking data, shore-based time-lapse footage, meteorological data, and tidal data. Two studies are presented: in the first, AIS data and acoustic recordings from Falmouth Bay in the western English Channel are combined using an adaptive threshold, which separates ship passages from background noise in the acoustic data. These passages are then cross-referenced with AIS vessel tracks, and the noise exposure associated with shipping activity is then determined. The second study, at a site in the Moray Firth, Scotland, expanded the method to include shore-based time-lapse footage, which enables visual corroboration of vessel identifications and the production of videos integrating the various data sources. Two further studies examine and enhance basic analysis techniques for ambient noise monitoring. The first study examines averaging metrics and their applicability to the assessment of noise from shipping. Long-term data from the VENUS observatory are empirically assessed for different averaging times and in the presence of outliers. It is concluded that the mean sound pressure level averaged in linear space is most appropriate, in terms of both standardization and relevance to impacts on marine fauna. In the second study, a new technique for the statistical analysis of long-term passive acoustic datasets, termed spectral probability density (SPD), is introduced. It is shown that the SPD can reveal characteristics such as multimodality, outlier influence, and persistent self-noise, which are not apparent using conventional techniques. This helps to interpret long-term datasets, and can indicate whether an instrument’s dynamic range is appropriate to field conditions. Taken together, the contributions presented in this thesis help to establish a stronger methodological basis for the assessment of shipping noise. These methods can help to inform emerging policy initiatives, efforts to standardise underwater noise measurements, and investigation into the effects of shipping noise on marine life.

Moutzouris, I. "Asset valuation in dry bulk shipping." Thesis, City, University of London, 2017. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/18410/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the dry bulk sector of the shipping industry. We begin by analysing the relation between second-hand vessel prices, net earnings, and holding period returns. Specifically, we provide strong statistical evidence that almost the entire volatility of shipping earnings yields can be attributed to variation in expected net earnings growth; almost none to expected returns variation and almost none to varying expectations about the terminal earnings yield. According to our results, earnings yields are negatively and significantly related to future net earnings growth. Furthermore, we find no consistent, strong statistical evidence supporting the existence of time-varying risk premia in the valuation of dry bulk vessels. Accordingly, we integrate the examination of the second-hand market by incorporating in the analysis the trading activity related to dry bulk vessels. For this purpose, we develop a heterogeneous expectations asset pricing model that can account for the actual behaviour of vessel prices and the positive correlation between net earnings, vessel prices, and second-hand vessel transactions. The proposed economy consists of two agent types who form heterogeneous expectations about future net earnings and at the same time under(over)estimate the future demand responses of their competitors. Formal estimation of the model suggests that the average investor expectations in the second-hand market for ships must be “near-rational”. In particular, the investor population must consist of a very large fraction of agents with totally – or very close to – rational beliefs while the remaining ones must hold highly extrapolative beliefs; thus, there must exist significant heterogeneity of beliefs in the market. Having concluded the analysis of the second-hand physical shipping market we turn to the derivative market for Forward Freight Agreements (FFAs) related to the dry bulk shipping sector. Accordingly, we illustrate formally that the bulk of volatility in the FFA basis can be attributed to expectations about future physical market conditions rather than expectations about future risk premia. Despite this finding, though, we document the existence of a bias in the FFA rates in the form of “contango” but also of both a strong momentum effect and significant predictability of risk premia by price-based signals and economic variables reflecting physical market conditions. The evidence of bias is further supported by the results of three econometric tests which suggest rejection of the unbiased expectations hypothesis. Finally, to justify these findings, we develop a dynamic asset pricing framework that can incorporate both the “hedging pressure” feature and a heterogeneous-beliefs explanation.

The behavior and interrelations between the main shipping forward curves are analyzed using multivariate statistics after removing the volatility distortions dictated by the Samuelson hypothesis. Principal Components Analysis and Canonical Correlation analysis were used to demonstrate how the task of explaining the various shipping forward curves can be simplified substantially and how very high correlations can be achieved between shipping forward curves. The conditions under which correlations are higher are discussed as well as the various applications of these results using case studies. Applications include trading from a hedge fund perspective, cross hedging any physical exposure in illiquid markets and portfolio optimization. Conditioning as a tool is also examined to demonstrate how more reliable correlation results can be obtained for cross hedging or other purposes, and how the best trading opportunities can be unveiled conditional on recently observed data. Tanker valuations are carried out using the adjusted forward curves with the RAFL ship valuation model. The results are very close to transaction prices for relatively modem vessels while deviations in older ships are explained with regards to phase out regulations and other factors. The ship value volatility and consequently the valuations of typical options are substantial and increase as a percentage of the ship value with age. These results have to be considered seriously in shipping transactions that include optionalities which are very common.

Hu, Zhongyue. "Impact of piracy on shipping contracts." Thesis, Swansea University, 2017. https://cronfa.swan.ac.uk/Record/cronfa41147.

Full text
Abstract:
This Ph.D. thesis analyses the commercial implications of piracy in the field of maritime law, particularly marine insurance, charterparties and carriage of goods by sea. Modern piracy is very much a live issue for the shipping industry. Most standard contracts used in practice do not provide adequate answers to the questions posed, leaving us with an alarming number of legal uncertainties. Reflecting the emergence of a new model of piracy, new special-tailored piracy clauses, standard armed guards employment contracts and marine Kidnap & Ransom policies have been drafted. The research examines how risk distribution between different parties needs to be reconsidered and how the problems emerging can be avoided by contractual mechanisms. Also, the research evaluates whether the new type of standard piracy clauses and policies provide enough protection and whether they are harmonised with the current English law principles.

Transgas Shipping Lines is a Peruvian company founded in 1991, the company’s core business is the operation and management of maritime transport ships; the company transports LPG, petrochemicals and hydrocarbons in the organization’s 13 owned vessels. In order to keep being competitive in the market, the company is looking for improvements their operations in the logistics department. After several meetings at the company’s office, some improvement opportunities were identified and after discussing them with the head of logistics a key problem was defined. The key problem was that the roles and responsibilities within the logistics processes were not clearly defined. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of this key problem was conducted in order to determine how it was affecting the company and the performance of the departments involved. This analysis lead to the conclusion that the company was losing money due to the delays on delivery of consumables to the vessels, loss of reputation, rework, etc. Solutions were assessed having in consideration six criteria: (a) cost/investment, (b) feasibility, (c) effectiveness, (d) ease of implementation, (e) reliability, and (f) ease of follow up. The chosen solution will define roles and responsibilities, provide training to employees, and implement a reward and punishment policy; and will be implemented in five phases before the end of the year 2017. This will help the company improve the performance of employees, increase their productivity, give a better service to their clients and align all employees to the company’s goals, mission and vision. It is key that the human resources department gets involved in the whole process of implementation and a quality control team or system is applied in order to succeed on the implementation of the proposed solution

Jurgens, Ulrich. "Enforcement of UK merchant shipping legislation." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2009. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/67656/.

Full text
Abstract:
The basis of this thesis is an investigation of Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) administrative and criminal enforcement files, relating to UK detentions and prosecutions. It would appear that this is the first time that such an analysis has been made. The thesis is divided into four parts of which Part B and C form the heart of the work. These two consider administrative (Part B) and criminal (Part C) enforcement measures and discusses their legal basis. But before these subjects are dealt with in more detail, enforcement personnel and their roles are analysed (Part A), and their role is compared to inspectors of the Health and Safety Executive and the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB). Human rights and their impact on both enforcement process and inspectors of MCA and MAIB are addressed within the context of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995 and Regulations issued under the Act. The thesis identifies inconsistencies of UK legislation when compared with European law and apparent lack of clarification within UK law. The analysis of administrative enforcement measures focuses on detentions of merchant ships whereas the discussion of criminal enforcement measures concentrates on the areas which the files suggested were the most affected by investigations and prosecutions, namely groundings, violations of the Collision Regulations and pollution incidents. It becomes clear from the research that detentions by far outweigh prosecutions, that MCA policy supports this approach and that enforcement personnel indicate a preference for such administrative enforcement measures. However, a large number of Detention Notices were found non-compliant with legal requirements. Still only one case was identified, documented and discussed where the MCA was taken to arbitration by the owner affected by a detention. The thesis offers suggestions as to how the work of MCA enforcement personnel can be improved and (Part D) what measures would seem to be appropriate for the lawmakers to take in the future. It is suggested that the approach taken in recent European oil pollution legislation to focus on serious negligence rather than on strict criminal liability could offer a suitable way forward. Throughout this work I have endeavoured to state the law as at 31 October 2008. In a number of cases it has been possible to take account of developments since that date as my viva voce only took place in June 2009. I have made reference to new European and UK pollution legislation (see Chapter 13, fn 1) which came into force or will come into force in the course of 2009. I also used the decision in TS Lines Ltd v. Delphis NV (The TS Singapore), [2009] EWHC B4 (Comm) in Chapter 8.6.2. to help clarify the discussion about the quantum of compensation in an arbitration over a detention. But I did not carry out a detailed analysis of the new legislation and that case. The decision in Club Cruise Entertainment and Travelling Services Europe BV v. The Department For Transport [2008] EWHC 2794 (Comm) of 18 November 2008, however, was fully analysed and relevant aspects found their way into the discussion in the thesis.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits (UCP) against the backdrop of the question: ‘what documents must a beneficiary, acting as seller under an international sale of goods carried by sea, present to a bank, and how must he present them, in order for the presentation to be considered compliant?’. It interprets the rules through the answer to this question by looking at national law but also the range of supporting material published by the International Chamber of Commerce. This includes the International Standard Banking Practice, Banking Commission Opinions and Recommendations and DOCDEX decisions. It is unique, because it is one of the few pieces of academic research to place emphasis on these documents and argue that they provide clarification and addition to the UCP. The result of the analysis is a list of proposals for amendments and additions, specifically to UCP but also in some cases to letter of credit law generally. It is these proposals and the arguments for them that are the original contribution to research. Perhaps the most daring submission, never made before in another piece of legal writing, is the proposal that the location of the Fraud Exception to the Autonomy Principle of letters of credit, and indeed all exceptions to the principle, are to be found in the UCP themselves. Where past research has adamantly held that the UCP do not deal with fraud, I submit that they do, and the analysis of the corresponding articles evidence this. The law is stated as at 1 September 2011.

Abstract:
This PhD thesis (totaling approximately 55,000 words) argues for the value of biometric studies of domesticates as a means by which to examine controversial questions in archaeological research. Taking the Greek colonisation of southern Italy and the Adriatic coast of Croatia as case studies faunal material was examined from Greece and both of these areas to determine what data domesticates could provide as to the scale and process of Greek colonisation in these regions. Distinct varieties of sheep and cattle were identified from Greece through bone measurements. These Greek livestock could then be traced to colonies in Italy, although not necessarily in Croatia. It was argued from the scale of evidence for domesticate translocation it Italy that a substantial majority of settlement in these colonies came from settlement relocation of families or groups from Greece, but that some indigenous or “other” variety livestock were included in the domesticate makeup of each colony site. Some provisional data from Archaic and later indigenous sites from Italy suggested that Greek livestock varieties were traded throughout the colonial landscape. Data from Croatia was less clear, as no conclusive evidence for Greek livestock translocation to colonies could be found. Likewise, no evidence was found of trade in Greek livestock varieties with indigenous settlements.

Lun, Yuen-Ha. "Building a model of national shipping centre." Thesis, City, University of London, 2017. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/17283/.

Full text
Abstract:
National shipping centres comprise both upstream and downstream firms in the logistics chain to conduct shipping and trade-related activities. Users of national shipping centres include traders, logistics service providers, shipping lines, terminal operators, and other actors. Shipping is the business of transporting goods to facilitate trade. Shipping and trade are closely associated. Shipping centres are located in transport complex economies that are desirable for their users to perform various shipping related business activities. To explore the formation of national shipping centres, this study identifies trade facilitation measures at both the macro and micro levels that enhance economic performance. To build the model of national shipping centre, hypotheses have been developed to illustrate the relationship between trade facilitation activities and trade costs. Furthermore, the economic outcomes are also examined in this theoretical model. To validate the proposed research model, data are collected from the World Bank, and analytical tool is used for data analysis. The results suggest that trade facilitation measures are negatively associated with trade costs. The results also suggest that the trade facilitation measures of a country are positively associated with its economic performance. The findings of this study are useful for both business managers and policy makers. Based on the finding, managers can formulate effective business strategies to select a location for their firms to conduct their business activities. On the other hand, policy makers can formulate relevant measures to attract business firms to locate at their countries. In studying the formation of national shipping centres, the importance of developing social capital for trade facilitation is also emphasized. To illustrate the validity of the findings, two case studies are presented. The first case study examines countries with more than one port. These countries are China, Japan, and Korea. The second case study look into areas with single port (i.e., Hong Kong and Singapore). Overall, this study builds a theoretical model and validates the model to seek answers to the following questions: • What are the roles of trade facilitation at the macro-level and micro-level in the development of national shipping centres? • Does trade facilitation influence the economic development of a country? • What is the link between the development of social capita (in terms of trade facilitation measures) and the economic performance of a country? • What are the differences national shipping centres between developed and developing countries?

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to make a business analysis of the Global Shipping industry, using a sample of four shipping companies in Norway, in order to establish whether the profitability is prosperous and sustainable enough for future growth. Also which different factors have been affecting the profitability. Background: Both the International and the Norwegian Shipping industry has been seen as an fluctuating industry, characterized poor returns, short market cycles where market booms have caused extraordinary returns. Additionally the shipping industry has recently been seen as a non-sustainable industry, where the proportion of its actions has not covered its sustainability, where, for example the vessels internationally have been seen to release a great amount of greenhouse gases. Method: Annual reports from 1970 – 2009 have been used in order to establish the profitability and sustainability reporting within the Norwegian Shipping in-dustry, additionally interviews have been conducted in order to gather knowledge within Sustainability reporting and being Sustainable, as well as relevant journals have been gathered from diverse databases. Conclusion: The findings of this thesis present that the shipping industry has not been sustainable, and that its growth has been fluctuating. Thus the conclusion being that the shipping industry is a very fluctuating industry where each company is driven by profit maximizing and thinking of their survival in a short-term perspective, rather than a long-term perspective.

Abstract:
Project Work presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Information Management, specialization in Information Systems and Technologies Management
The globalization supported with internet evolution is creating a new open door for many traditional industries. One of them is the shipping industry. Online platforms are transforming this industry in an industry available 24/7 and worldwide for clients as well, since the vessels never stop. With containers distributed all around the world and all countries needing to import cargo to achieve some primary internal demands, the shipping industry is reinventing its way of working, creating ecommerce platforms. In this specific project, the goal will be to create a conceptual model of an ecommerce shipping platform for a Portuguese Shipping Company, being an opportunity to reinforce its presence in the national market and to expand to international market. This conceptual model was created based in the platforms existent in the market and validate with published articles. This model was discussed with the stakeholders to adapt it to the reality of the market. An analysis was performed in order to determine the best solution to implement this platform, looking for the cost and the adaptability. Of course, results will show that the cost and adaptability do not go in the same direction, and could be a point to analyse while looking for a better solution in long-term.

The main purpose of this paper is to apply the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) model to sieve out the indexes for container shipping carriers when they are operating the green shipping practice. At first, according to historical literature, a hierarchical structure with six dimensions and eighteen evaluation criteria were constructed. Then, based on container shipping carrier’s opinions and the AHP experts’ questionnaires, we used the FAHP model to evaluate the green shipping practices indexes (GSPIs). Finally, we obtained the most seven GSPIs for the container shipping carriers in Taiwan. They are ‘complying with the related regulations,’ ‘designing economical routes,’ ‘setting up energy efficiency design index (EEDI),’ ‘the degrees of efficiency of shipping collaboration,’ ‘promoting sustainable development,’ ‘using newly-built ships,’ and ‘complying with the ship efficient management plan (SEEMP),’ respectively.
