This thesis is an analysis of the Global Ship-repair market. This subject is of great interest to all involved in the shipping industry, as it is one of the industry's major components. There are many yards that specialize in ship-repair and bear the necessary equipment and facilities to meet shipowners' needs and specifications. The service mix varies though, depending upon the strategic decisions made by the different shipyards so as to optimize their efficiencies. Different shipyards and geographical regions offer different varieties of services and specialization. Thereby, my aim is to define, analyze, and understand the mechanisms of the ship-repair market. To do so, I will first look on the market as a single unit. I will then segment the whole ship-repair industry into geographical regions, analyze them separately, and compare them. Through this process, I shall establish a way for a shipowner to more appropriately choose the shipyard that best meets his needs. So as to carry out the above analysis, I will have to compare the different yards on a common basis. For that purpose, a dry docking specification for an existing 34,000 dwt bulk-carrier vessel was sent to numerous yards around the globe on request for offers. Collecting data was not trouble-free; some shipyards did not respond to our drydocking specification at all, while others did not have free space to facilitate the vessel. After several attempts, more than thirty offers from around the world were aggregated, providing an ample set of data to carry out the necessary calculations. What follows next is a look into the future trends of the ship-repair market.

Sinha, Ashutosh. "Modelling commercial process in ship repair & conversion using artificial neural networks." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.556033.

Abstract:
Abstract This thesis discusses the development of a simulation model using artificial neural networks to model and predict the outcome of commercial process at a Shiprepair Conversion yard. Based on the data collected from across the A&P group a simulation model of the commercial process was developed. It was considered that contrary to the popular belief of securing one in five enquires as a potential contract the model can predict the probability of the outcome of a contract. The aim of the simulation is to ultimately develop a decision making tool for the ship repair industry which could help predict the outcome of the an enquiry based on certain parameters, hence reducing the estimating time and giving yards an advantage over their competitors. The research work looks into the estimation and management of Shiprepair and conversion processes, identifies the key stakeholders in the process and looks at the inherent risks of outdated technologies. The development of an intelligent supply chain management will enhance the yards product ability, help reduce the over heads and decrease the tendering process for the total repair. The challenges of assembling and deploying integrated supply chain are not unique to the Shiprepair industry. Increasing international pressures are motivating all industrial corporations continuously to reduce cycle times, manufacturing & administrative costs and to increase productivity. In addition, to improve internal production efficiency shipyards are turning to external factors such as subcontractors and suppliers. Improving supply chain management can help yards better understand their production enterprises and these insights can be used to optimize processes and facilities. A key element to improve the efficiency of ship repair supply chain is to improve the integration of, organizations operating within a supply chain. Describing Shiprepair in a nutshell it would right to say that: - 8 - --------_1 "There are known knowns. There are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we now know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we do not know we don't know" 1 and Shiprepair is full of unknown unknowns, the thesis attempts to identify a few.

Young, Cynthia Jane. "Knowledge Management and Innovation on Firm Performance of United States Ship Repair." ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/2183.

Abstract:
With the decreasing labor forces throughout the United States, if leadership of the ship repair industry does not incorporate knowledge sharing and innovation into their daily business practices, knowledge will be lost during employee departures and turnover of teams from project-to-project, resulting in decreasing firm performance within their organizations. This was a correlation study to determine if there was a correlation between knowledge management, innovation, and firm performance. Data were collected from 69 CEO/Presidents, Human Resource personnel, or members in leadership positions of the Virginia Ship Repair Association in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. The theoretical framework for this study was the unified model of dynamic knowledge creation with the key constructs of the socialization, externalization, combination, and internalization process; places of knowledge sharing, whether they are virtual, physical, or mental; and leadership. Data collection occurred through an online survey. Multiple linear regression analyses significantly predicted the dependent variable, F(2, 66) = 17.33, p = .000, R2 = .344. Increasing knowledge sharing and innovation practices provides for positive social change for the personnel of these organizations, since the skills they learn within their organizations are immediately usable in their personal endeavors in their churches, neighborhoods, and family relationships and are transferrable to those they interact with outside of their organizations.

Abstract:
This thesis outlines the development of composite reinforcement technology for a ship's aluminium alloy superstructure. The work objective aimed to alleviate stress concentration in parts of the superstructure prone to fatigue-induced cracking. This is a novel approach to ship repair, which promises reduction in the cost of maintenance primarily due to greater efficiency and lower cost of repair. The work was conducted over approximately 12 years. It commenced in the late 80s with laboratory research and development and concluded in 2000 after completion of a seven-year trial on board a navy ship. Two carbon fibre composites, (5 m x 1 m consisting of a 25-ply laminate), were adhesively bonded to the 02-deck on the port and starboard sides. It was found that upgrading the structure using composites was effective, making it able to withstand service fatigue stresses. Finite element modelling and strain measurements on board the ship showed that critical stress concentration could be alleviated through stress redistribution. For the duration of the trial, no cracking of aluminium alloy deck in the vicinity of the reinforcements was reported. Both composite reinforcements exhibited good performance and remained in service after the end of the trial. However, the marine environment did cause some non-structural, edge debonding of the glass fibre reinforced overlay at the composite-metal interface. This overlay was designed to provide surface protection to the underlaying carbon reinforcement. Bond degradation was patchy. It occurred after about three years in service, most probably due to a combination of thermal cycling (solar heating/cooling) and water ingress at the interface. A new edge sealing method restored its durability and it required no further attention. This experiment was successfully demonstrated on board an active navy ship. The work proved that an effective and durable repair of a ship structure using non-metallic repair technology is feasible. Composite reinforcements prevented deck cracking and removed any need for welded repairs, thereby reducing the cost of ship maintenance. For further cost reduction it is recommended to adopt the principle of reverse engineering to simplify the technology for dockyard use.

The United States Navy is under pressure to reduce the cost of fleet maintenance in order to redirect funds for the construction of new ships and submarines. The Navy looks to private industry for process improvement ideas such as the Theory of Constraints, Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing Principles. This thesis examines the Lean Manufacturing movement in the private sector of ship repair and how it eventually came to government owned ship repair operations. Recent National Ship Research Program (NSRP) initiatives provide shipyards a strategy of how to select areas of an operation for Lean improvements. The Norfolk Naval Shipyard method is a combination of the Theory of Constraints, Six Sigma and Lean Principles called Lean Sigma. The Lean Sigma methodology for planning, executing and sustaining lean improvement and how to measure success with various metrics is presented. Lean Sigma is implemented into the Electric Motor Rewind and Repair Center as a case study. Before and after assessments, lessons learned, and recommendations from the implementation case study are presented.
(cont.) Details of the challenges and pitfalls encountered during the Lean Sigma implementation in the areas of culture, budget, management, metrics and cost benefit measurement, are described throughout the test case. In conclusions key elements for successful Lean transformation and a vision for the future Lean Ship Repair Enterprise are presented.

The goal of current Navy surface ship maintenance and repair strategy is to sustain readiness and to maximize both combat capability and the amount of time ships are available for employment during their lifetime. The established organizational framework of the Navy to perform this task includes a complex array of activities that are effective overall, but at the expense of efficiency. The current drawdown in budget resources requires that the goals of ship maintenance and modernization be met with improved efficiency. The Afloat Maintenance Command is a proposal to restructure the existing maintenance hierarchy. Improvements in the process of maintenance and modernization are incorporated in the Afloat Maintenance Command through the elimination of redundancies in capabilities and the improvement of funding flows to enhance organizational efficiency and effectiveness. This thesis will provide an overview of the Afloat Maintenance Command and its possible organization in consolidating assets from existing maintenance activities. Additionally, funding alternatives for the Afloat Maintenance Command will be developed and assessed.

Abstract:

Occupational stress has become one of the most pressing challenges for organizational managers today. Because it has a significantly negative influence on job satisfaction and employee performance, this phenomenon calls for the design and implementation of special techniques to minimize risks and mitigate consequences. In most cases, heavy workloads, hazardous working environments, and strenuous workplace atmospheres lead to work-related stress. Although the risks of occupational stress are similar across different sectors of the economy, they are significantly higher in the ship-repair industry owing to a lack of knowledge regarding work-related stress and its effects. It is imperative to fill this existing knowledge gap by investigating the maritime industry with a special focus on factors contributing to occupational stress and techniques used to reduce it. This study attempted to determine some effective techniques for overcoming the challenge of work-related stress in the ship-repair industry, bearing in mind the peculiarities of this sector of the economy. This research was a qualitative exploratory case study. Conclusions were drawn based on the in-depth understanding of professional stress obtained by analyzing the sensations, beliefs, reflections, and personal experiences of people employed by a company operating in the ship-repair industry. To fully address the research question and pay specific attention to each respondent, the sample was small, consisting of 8 project and production managers working with a ship-repair company located in New Jersey. Participants were interviewed using open-ended questions with an emphasis on their lived experiences and their opinions on occupational stress and ways to address this challenge. An employee’s number of years worked and position within the company were the major criteria for selecting participants because of the assumption that only those who had a long history of cooperation with an organization are competent and experienced enough to share adequate and accurate facts required to draw comprehensive conclusions and generalizations for the company. Several themes were derived from the observations of the participants including (a) employee stress, performance, and productivity, (b) employee stress and absenteeism, (c) communication, (d) role clarity, and (e) incentives. From the findings, 10 recommendations are made to improve practice in the field while three recommendations are made to further research into the effects of stress and the creation of strategies to mitigate it in the workplace. Managers need to be aware of their industries and work environments and tailor those environments to minimize stress on their workers. Managers need to take into consideration the needs of their employees in devising strategies to minimize stress. Finally, managers need to consider implementing the recommendations for practice proposed in this dissertation in the efforts to maximize worker efficiency and performance while mitigating the effects of stress on those workers.

Ng, Peter Yip-Chuen. "Cooperative teamwork for quality customer service in the Hong Kong shiprepair yards environment." Curtin University of Technology, Graduate School of Business, 2003. http://espace.library.curtin.edu.au:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=15097.

Full text
Abstract:
During the turbulent times facing contemporary organisations, managers and employees need a precise understanding of the nature of team dynamics that develops quality service to customers. Extensive literature searches reveal few research studies focused on the nature of teamwork, which develops value to customers. The purpose of this study is to examine the value of teamwork for providing quality service within the Hong Kong shiprepair industry, outline the insight gleaned and recommend future research. This study aims to link empirically the Western developed Deutsch's (1949a, 19496, 1973, 1980, 1985, 1990) Theory of Cooperation and Competition with the innovation of teamwork and to assist in understanding the variance in the performance of these teams. Literature suggests that the relationships and interaction within the work teams can very much impact the overall performance of these work teams. The extent that these work teams are able to develop cooperative goals can promote productive and constructive communication and problem solving (constructive controversy) in their interactions. A constructive interaction leads to team members' perception of high team confidence. With trust, strong work relationship, team morale and perceived confidence, team effectiveness is enhanced on quality customer service (Alper, Tjosvold and Law, 1998; Tjosvold, Hui and Law, 1998; Tjosvold, Moy and Sasaki, 1996, 1999; Wong et al., 1999). The research also tests the extent of impact of traditional Chinese values of power distance and collectivism as contributing to cooperative goals and encourages an openminded discussion of opposing views (constructive controversy). It proposes that by adopting cooperative goals, shiprepair yard management in Hong Kong may meet the twin challenges of involving employees fully into the organisation and providing quality service to customers.
The result suggests that the Western derived Theory of Cooperation and Competition, if appropriately and skillfully expressed, might have the potential as one alternative to understand the goal interdependence dynamics as experienced by the Hong Kong Chinese in the shiprepair industry. Nevertheless, the result is not confirmatory to the main hypothesis of the study that team confidence is significantly related to quality customer service. Findings of this study question whether a Western theory or research instrument derived is appropriate for application to a Chinese work setting (Bond and Wang, 1983). Although it is useful to test concepts developed in one culture to another, yet theories from the West cannot be assumed to apply in the East (Hofstede, 1993; Triandis, 1983). An important finding of this research is, however, that this Western derived theory might not be suitable to be applied in a work group of very low levels of education and/or low exposure to the modern workplace practice and Western influences.

In Portugal, the ship repair services are directed mainly to the foreign market, with 37% on average for the EU and 23% for the rest of the world, despite the drastic reduction since 1979, less 93% of workers contributing to about 5% of GVA of the manufacturing industry of the country, and have had 32% of the export market. This fall is attributed by some observers to factors related to: lack of employee skills since the 80s, the country's output of materials, raw materials and equipment, and output of important foreign investors, not management evolution, ending subsidies to the industry repair by the imposition of the OECD and the displacement for Western Asia of the European shipbuilding industry. But even without the restructuring of the sector which the European partners have done, Portugal has the potential of competitiveness, EUROSTAT 2012. In this context, the research conducted for the project submitted, we would be led to conclude that the "Ship Repair Performance in Portugal" is possible if domestic shipyards create key factors as: the correct sizing of the teams, with the qualifications and relevant expertise, corporate culture, technology and must manage more engage customers and suppliers in the projects, with the outsourcing to help reduce costs, and control of the "repair" to be made using the new technologies of the type ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) to involve stakeholders in monitoring the project, as well as partnerships between national and international competitor

This Master's final work asks the economic and financial viability of the exploitation of an App - application for use in mobile and smartphones - in this case aimed at customers looking for repair shops, and services for their vehicles. It is an innovative application in its content and directed to an "offer" of micro and medium enterprises, mostly, without the capacity to have its own marketing and advertising, with a pulverized and occasional "demand". It has, therefore, the potential to create and consolidate a direct channel between suppliers and customers. In the first phase, only in the automotive sector, expanding to motorcycles and pleasure boats, as well as, initially in the District of Lisbon, extending to the metropolitan area of Lisbon and Oporto. Theoretical documentation was collected and analysed, both on the aspects relevant to the design and development of the App, as well as on the reasons for acceptability / rejection of App's by the markets, as well as on the reasons for the success of some of the most well-known Apps. It was theoretically based on a number of published documents that a final framework for analyzing economic and financial viability was presented, taking into account the market analysis that was audited through interviews at both ends of the intended channel create: the repair shops and the clients. The result seems to be encouraging for the launch of the App, according to the assumptions considered, even testing the sensitivity to some unfavorable variations.

Energy conservation is a major concern in todays data centers, which are the 21st century data processing factories, and where large and complex software systems such as distributed data management stores run and serve billions of users. The two main drivers of this major concern are the pollution impact data centers have on the environment due to their waste heat, and the expensive cost data centers incur due to their enormous energy demand. Among the many subsystems of data centers, the storage system is one of the main sources of energy consumption. Among the many types of storage systems, key/value stores happen to be the widely used in the data centers. In this work, I investigate energy saving techniques that enable a consistent hash based key/value store save energy during low activity times, and whenever there is an opportunity to reuse the waste heat of data centers.

This research is to integrate disordered logistical maintenance and supply systems by applying knowledge management and continuous innovations, therefore, to achieve the goal of satisfying our customers. Knowledge management is a concept to collect, to analyze, and to rearrange information to make useless numbers meaningful; we can enlarge the value of the knowledge by sharing and well directing. The specific method using in this research is Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF), which is an application of knowledge management. DoDAF focuses on building common definitions, using mutual information, applying collective measures, and thinking from joint aspects, so the discrepant frameworks become a unified one. Then, we analyze or run the complicated operation is this integrated framework to accomplish the target of this research. By studying, naval vessels are large-sized and comprehensive products, in other words, which mean complicated structure, high technique, long maintaining cycle, and multitudinous components. Because of these characteristic, the navy has a hard time on assigning resources, making maintenance plans, and managing repair projects. To solve the problems, the results of the research suggest that the navy should enhance computerizing, standardizing, rationalizing, and industrializing on the current logistical framework to approach the goal of knowledge sharing, systems integrating, procedures rebuilding, and the cost decreasing.

Merchant shipping business either container ships, bulk carriers, oil tankesr or general cargo ships, it must to conduct needs to maintenance. The most important thing for ships is “Sea Worthiness”. Docking inspection is the primary and principal item of repairing and maintenance. During that time the underwater works can only be carried out. After having been approved and recognized by classifications can ships be issued with certificates of worthiness. There are obviously many complicated items of repairing and inspections in the course of docking accompanied by huge costs of man power, materials and money. This leads to the issue of efficient control of budget and time for docking, which is regarded as the major topic by vessel managers and operators. Many studies on the analysis of docking for merchant ships have been issued by shipping technical business. However, that for general cargo ships can hardly be found. This study presented herein possesses the features as stated successively., A 16 year old conventional general cargo ships (Built time 2000 in Japan) was chosen as an example. Through 3 times of docking repair, docking time are 2010, 2013, 2015 respectively. Fortunately the 3 times of docking repair are in same place and same docking factory. In such a rare chance, Routine expenses/tariffs are excluded. Only the technical cost incurred in the course of docking is explored. The complete data are collected, organized and analyzed items by items. Then can the infrastructure of budget be well built. This can act a useful reference for owners to arrange and plan well on the aspects of pre-docking works, repairing/maintenance and duration of inspection work. Moreover, efficient budget control and best arrangement of repairing and arrangement for docking/repairing/maintenance can be well achieved. There will be saving unnecessary costs and best economic benefits can be created. Through the detail studies and calculation. This study acquired conclusions as follows: 1、Docking maintenance costs are mainly concerned with deck work, piping system, derust and painting work, steel plate work and docking service work. The mainly 5 items totally costs are $ 176,530 account for 81% of total costs. 2、Except 5 major engineering costs, another including engineroom work, temporary work, supplyment work, electric work and boiler work etc,. Totally cost are $ 42,092 account for 19% of total costs. 3、Supplyment work including temporary and supplyment work are $ 20817 account for 7% of total costs. 4、How to control and save the docking maintenance costs. Except the rigidly docking service cost, this study are proved including deck work, piping system, painting and derust work, steel plate work are mostly vital important items. 5、It is really funny found, that docking service is a fixed cost. This rate in order is decreased year by year from 2010, 2013 and 2015. We shall anticipated that the rate will decended excluding 5 major costs next drydocking.

Due to the irregular loading of ocean wave, the structure components of ship may have the problem of fatigue strength. Recently the high tensile steel was widely used for the purpose of lightening ship, and the study offatigue design is getting more important. How to check the fatigue strengthof the structure components of ship efficiently has become an important subject in analyzing the strength of ship. The fatigue strength of a 260K DWT Oil Tanker made with high tensilestrength steel was studied in this thesis. The Strip method and the finiteelement method were used in the stress analysis of the Oil Tanker. Thus,we can get the long term distribution of the stress of the structure. Moreover, we can use the S-N curve of the material to analysis the fatiguestrength of the structure as well as predict the fatigue life of thestructure of the Oil Tanker.

In the past, the safety concepts which all the factory leaders or managers have emphasized were mostly either on the design of the workshops, facilities, environments, and traffic flow, or on the improvement of management, inspection, and training. They didn’t realize that humans themselves are the key to everything. Even the best systems and facilities are eventually controlled by the people. The mistakes made by people always lead to the severe safety concerns. Therefore, this study is based on the ergonomics point of view to discuss the safety management issues of ship repair works on the Naval Logistics Commands. Not only considering the existed facilities, environments, and management, putting more emphasis on the human factors. Ergonomics is a research method related to the interface of human and environment. It studies the human error factors and to find out the causes and solutions. Put the ergonomics into the management and inspection mechanism of the organization to conduct the control and prevention measures. Specifically the process transforms to the safety management checklist in this study, which is expected to provide a feasible tools for the workshop employees at logistics support commands. This study is based on the safety management, ergonomics theories, and the 25 years working experience in Navy, and by means of expertise interview and questionnaire analysis. The industrial safety inspection was focus on the physical condition and working environment, like employee work examination and machine inspection, which was lacking of employee’s mental condition, family impact, for example. Therefore, this study establishes a safety checklist for the workshop employees which can check their physical and mental conditions in accordance with ergonomics spirits.

Full text
Abstract:
The hull is the most important structural part of any maritime vessel. It must be adequately designed to withstand the harsh sailing environmental conditions and associated forces. In the past, the basic material used to manufacture the ship hull was wood, where the hull was usually shaped as cylindrical wooden shanks. In the present, hull designs have developed to steel columns or stiffened panels that are made of different types of materials. Panels that are stiffened orthogonally in two or more directions and have nine independent material constants are defined as orthotropic panels, and they achieve high specific strength. This thesis presents the effect of different patch orientations on the resulting strain and stress concentrations at the area of interaction between the panel and the patch. As it is known, the behavior of stiffened plates is affected by several important parameters, e.g., length to width ratio of the panel, stiffener geometry and spacing, aspect ratio for plates between stiffeners, plate slenderness, von Mises stresses, initial distortions, boundary conditions, and type of loading. A finite element model of the ship hull has been developed and run on ABAQUS (commercially available finite element software). The stiffened panel and patch are modeled as equivalent orthotropic plates made of steel. The panel edges are considered to be simply supported, and uniaxial tension was applied to the equivalent stiffened panel in addition to the lateral pressure (from water interaction). The developed model successfully predicted the optimal orientation of the panel for maximum stress concentration reduction. Moreover, in order to minimize the severe conditions caused by the mismatch that occurs if the material properties of the patch and the panel are the same during the patching process, it is necessary to stiffened the patch more than the panel. The developed model also suggested that an isotropic layer be added at the interaction to decrease the severity of arising stresses.

Abstract:
Over the last couple of years the ship repair industry in South Africa and in particular Durban has expanded significantly and the potential and opportunities for growth are still significant. This should be regarded as a positive sign for the industry that is currently enjoying a high level of demand for its services. This in turn has far reaching economic impacts upstream in the economy in terms of employment, revenue and income generation. The opportunities currently presented to the industry in the Port of Durban are vast and require exploitation. The Port of Durban, however, has physical constraints that are at present being addressed, but also structural and operational inefficiencies that hamper the full exploitation of such opportunities. The absence of a Development Framework Plan, in which these opportunities can be exploited, further aggravates the situation, much to the frustration of local ship repairers. This dissertation seeks to evaluate and assess opportunities currently presented to the industry in the Port of Durban. It further seeks to put a framework in place to best exploit such opportunities.

The reliability of ship’s electrical power system is the most important when naval ship is carrying out the mission at sea. We can’t ignore the important of equipment maintenance than we will get the maximum benefit under minimum maintenance cost. The appropriate maintenance policy is not only to improve the reliability and the efficiency of equipment but also to extend the equipment life and to lower the maintenance cost. Moreover, it ensure the navigation safety and the achievement of mission. This thesis is to estimate the reliability of one naval ship’s four service diesel generators using repair records which cooperate with the rate of aging decay and maintenance recovery. According to the evaluation principle of parallel system derive the reliability of the four generators which are at any operation hours in parallel operation. Also, provide the reference for decision maker to select the generators for using before the mission is executed. Meanwhile, we compare the time based preventive maintenance (TBPM)with the reliability based preventive maintenance(RBPM)on equipment maintenance and maintenance cost. As to the reliability based preventive maintenance(RBPM)policy, a control limit of reliability is defined in advance, and evaluate the time points whenever the reliability of anyone generator falls to this predefined control limit ,that is a important reference of the generator should be repaired or on-condition maintained. Furthermore, set a extreme limit of reliability . To evaluate the time between and is the maximum time delay for maintaining or repairing the generator, that is the important reference of risk management before the mission is executed.

This work examines the problem of synchronization of production processes and the problem of exchange of information during the collaboration of enterprises, for the realization of the business process within a supply chain. An integrated framework is described, based on the modern information technology for the synchronization of production processes performed by the manufacturing resources of cooperating enterprises as well as for the integration of their information technology (IT) systems. The objective of the framework, is to facilitate the collaboration of enterprises with the adoption of modern standards for data exchange and representation, as well as the management of information that is exchanged among them for the implementation of their commercial and production transactions, with the most efficient way so that to achieve reduction of total cost of operation of the overall supply chain. The proposed approach is applied to support the commercial and production operations in a real life shiprepair environment. In the shiprepair industry the implementation of IT systems, is still immature. The IT systems, which are used, are characterized as "islands of automation" because each one implements only partially the business process. In addition, the integration of existing software systems is difficult, because of the different storage mechanism used by each individual system and the different level of automation of each software application used. Furthermore, the large volume of the exchanged data creates additional complexity, because of the difficulty in the transmission and import of data in heterogeneous software systems used by each shiprepair partner, required to enable the essential data processing for the continuation of the shiprepair business process. Finally, during the shiprepair production process, subcontractors and suppliers are also involved; therefore the synchronization of their work with the work that is executed by the shipyard resources is complicated. The proposed framework, suggests an approach for the integration of IT systems, aiming at the structured management of information. In particular, the information that is exchanged, is modeled based on modern standards for data exchange and representation, aiming at the development of software that implements the exchange of data between the cooperating enterprises. Using such a system, the exchange of data is realized with precision and reliability, due to decreased human intervention in data typing operations. Moreover, with the use of the Internet, fast transmission of information is achieved in parallel to the minimisation of time and cost for data exchange. Finally, this work, describes the implementation of a scheduling methodology suggested in the literature, for planning of the work performed by the manufacturing resources of the cooperating partners in the project type manufacturing system. Finally, the implementation of the suggested approach in a real life shiprepair supply chain is described.

Full text
Abstract:
Disruptions to job shop schedules are tedious and difficult to incorporate after the schedule has been generated and implemented on the shop floor. In order to deal with such disruptions, a real time reactive scheduling strategy is essential. Reactive scheduling is the process of repairing the predictive schedule during online execution for internal disruptions (e.g. machine breakdowns) and external deviations (e.g. prepone or postpone of orders). Existing approaches for schedule repair in real time mainly utilize heuristics such as Right Shift Rescheduling (RSR), and Affected Operation Rescheduling (AOR). In the present form, both these approaches are only used for handling machine breakdowns in the shop floor, but are inept in accommodating new and unexpected job orders. These approaches also neglect specific issues related to urgent jobs, for instance multiple job routings during the repair of the schedule. In this paper the existing heuristics (RSR and AOR) have been modified to include urgent jobs. Also a modified AOR approach (mAOR) is proposed that considers urgent jobs with multiple job routings. An extensive simulation study has been conducted on a job shop simulation testbed for the efficiency and stability of the repaired schedule using the mAOR and RSR heuristics. The efficiency of the repaired schedule is a measure of the percentage change in the makespan after incorporating repairs whereas the stability of the schedule is a function of starting time deviations that indicate the degree by which it deviates from the original schedule. The results of the experiments indicate significant benefits of the modified AOR algorithm over the existing RSR schedule repair heuristic.

Since the separation of car repair services from automobile manufacturing businesses by the Department of Economics’ business division, auto repair has become a viable, independent industry. Numerous small auto repair and maintenance shops are quickly appearing in cities everywhere, but these small, privately-owned car maintenance businesses have their advantages and disadvantages, especially when compared to larger chain repair stores. For one thing, it is more difficult for small businesses to handle hardships and tough times. Therefore, this paper presents a general model of key factors to keeping business successful and afloat. First, 100 factors are analyzed, using Delphi technique and multiple factors scoring method to determine the primary factors to success. Then, AHP is utilized to find key factors in areas such as service policy, environmental facility, technical ability, operations management, customer satisfaction, customer concern, and 22 other aspects. According to expert judgement, ten factors, Better employee relationships, Customer response within 72 hours, Reminders to customers to return for follow-ups, Completion of repairs in one visit, Employment of highly skilled technicians, High employee morale, Good customer relationships, Customer recommended, Parts always in stock, and Maintenance is the top priority, positively influence the management results of privately-owned car maintenance businesses. The critical to success provided in this paper are useful for independent auto maintenance business owners, and can be adjusted to fit each individual business’ needs.

Abstract:
Reactive repair of a disrupted schedule is a better alternative to total rescheduling, as the latter is a time consuming process and also results in shop floor nervousness. The schedule repair heuristics reported in the literature generally address only machine breakdown. This paper presents a modified Affected Operations Rescheduling (mAOR) approach, which deals with many of the disruptions that are frequently encountered in a job shop. The repair of these disruptions has been decomposed into four generic repair actions that can be applied singularly or in combination. These generic repair actions are evaluated through a simulation study with the performance measures of efficiency and stability. The results indicate the effectiveness of the mAOR heuristic in dealing with typical job shop disruptions.

The outdated of traditional shop-house and changing environment is the main problem, but because of the situation of broken and user''s ability, repair and adjustment of space use can not be done by themselves, so the user will find different ways for different needs. The pressure of economic and longer time of repair make users invite workman to repair the house rather than professionals. Affected by the whole environment, there are some gaps between communication. So the problems in the repair of traditional shop-house is our main point. The research is focused on Hsinchu Peimen old street, to explore the problems in repair the traditional shop-house. Step: First, understanding why the users still keep on using traditional shop-house, the situation of broken and the need for adjust space use. And in which way the users repair house mostly, then research the problems in repair the house, to provide advice for the users who repair their house.

Most automobile manufacturers forecast the needs of service parts according to previous occurrence and sales statistics. In addition, the corporation evaluates its sales and profit outcomes by analyzing the targeted sales quantities, setting up transaction goals, and comparing estimated amount with the factual result. The evaluation helps the company recognizes and reviews its strengths and weaknesses from actual numbers. Nevertheless, employers and employees oftentimes have disagreements regarding to the estimated profit goals that is used in evaluation. Hence, it is necessary to have a practical and functional forecasting model in measuring profit goals for both parties. The major purpose of this research is to determine which of the proposed simple forecasting methods performs best in setting up reasonable and achievable profit goals as well as reducing inventory cost of part and accessory in car maintain service industry. The result indicates that a simple regression model which uses the number of licensed cars within past three years as the input variable to predict the future requirements for the spare parts performs best among the proposed models.

The primary target of this research is to design an Intelligent Repair System for telecommunication equipment manufacturers, based on the Shop Floor Integrated Information System. During the repair of a product, we can retrieve a similar case from the case base by the similarity coefficient and adapt the solution provided from the old case. The scope of the research includes system demand architecture, system design, system implementation and verification procedures, etc… In this case study, we applied『Case Base Reasoning』to design this Intelligent Repair System. Through the computation of the similarity coefficient between a new failure product and the old cases in the database, we retrieve a couple of the similar old cases for decision. These old cases provide valuable data for repair engineers’ reference. By reference these data, Repair engineer could enhance the quality of diagnosis and reduce the time and cost of repair.

As a result, there will be more demand for people to be involved in automobile repairing service. However, among the people who worked in the automobile repair shop, they have limited knowledge and awareness about work environment safety as well as self-protection. This not only raises the work efficiency but also reduces the side effect of occupational disease such as fatigue of eyes. It will also reduce the danger at work site, and prevent dramatic occupational hazard to occur, at the same time, it will also promote worker safety management. There are almost 80% of the information and message that human receives are from lights and by eyesight, both during daytime and night time. Comfortable lighting environment is important to everyone, for workers who work lasting 8 to 12 hours under improper environment, it can be detrimental to both physical and mental health. Therefore, improving worksite lighting equipment combined with well lighting design necessary for worker to have more comfortable work environment. Our study showed that the lighting quality rate for work environment of automobile repair shop sampled here is 61.53%, and none of the nearby worksite has met the criteria. Furthermore, the work-surface to neighborhood ratio for proper lighting criteria is also 61.53%. Improving the neighborhood lighting by providing supplementary luminate will resolute this problem.

An automobile is the important form of transportation in the modern society. The quantity and quality of automobiles are constantly increasing and the repair and maintenance of automobiles is more and more important but relatively difficult. Though automobile maintenance factories can be found everywhere, the scale and service quality of these factories are quite heterogeneous. It is more and more difficult for a car owner to select an automobile maintenance factory which is beneficial for the car owner and good for his/her car. In order to make car owners select a suitable automobile maintenance factory in a more specific and objective manner and satisfy the needs of car owners, this research used multiple research methods to yield reliable information, which can serve as a more specific guideline for car owners in the selection of automobile maintenance factories. This research documented crucial criteria in the selection of automobile maintenance factories based on extensive literature review and the author’s years of work experience. Through interviews with 12 experts by using both Delphi Hierarchy Process (DHP) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), this research summarized crucial criteria (i.e., factors of environmental equipment, business administration, service quality, convenience and economy, technology, communication and coordination) and their sub-criteria that influence the car owner’s selection of automobile maintenance factories. AHP questionnaire was designed based on the research framework and administered to collect data. Expert Choice was used to conduct the AHP analysis and reveal the weights and rankings for all the key criteria and sub-criteria. Posterior to the rigorous research process, the results revealed that all the consistency ratios meet the requirement, indicating that the AHP results of weights and rankings of criteria and sub-criteria are reliable and useful. Our results, on the one hand, can serve as a guideline for car owners to make a better choice among automobile maintenance factories. On the other hand, automobile maintenance factories can refer to the results of this research to improve criteria and sub-criteria that are important in the car owners’ choice decision. Furthermore, the findings of this research provide a basic framework that future studies can refer to and extend, which is expected to make their studies have more precise foundation and results. Keywords: Car Owner, Automobile Service Factory, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), Service Quality.

Motorcycles have been one of the most important transportation in Taiwan since the Japanese colonial period because it is small in area but densely populated here. According to the statistics of Ministry of Transportation and Communications, the number of licensed motorcycles in Taiwan is up to 14,132,143 till March 2014. Then the number of the scooter repair shops has been growing up to 40,000. The history of scooter repair shop has several decades and many old shops still exist now, but because of the change of the environment and technology, and the threat of the new entrants, many old shops have problems and crisis on operation and management especially on customer defection. Therefore how a traditional scooter repair shop to transform in management is our study emphasis. This study uses qualitative research method to discuss how a traditional scooter repair shop to innovate and transform interiorly and search the exterior opportunity of cooperation in order to sustain continuously. Our research hopes to find the solutions by the theories and observation of actual practice, and then offer results to the dealers and channels for reference. Our study has three results: 1. For a traditional scooter repair shop, having a brand new shop front and using professional equipment and tools can appeal to new customers. Strictly educate and demand the employees, and the most important one is to advance mechanics’ professional repair skill. 2. Holding marketing events to attract customers; developing customer relationship and satisfaction by good service; interacting with customers by network community like facebook can increase the trusting relationship. Filing customer data and repair documents, and educating customer the correct maintenance concept can reduce the probability of customer complaints and increase customer repurchase intention. 3. Scooter repair shops can strength their advantages and complement with others by cooperation or strategic alliance. Even they can establish an alliance brand and then promote brand images together.
