Full textShigeru Mizuki (1922-2015) is one of the most sophisticated and accomplished of modern manga artists. His work synthesizes ancient and modern Japanese visual artistic methods with contemporary tropes from Western graphic art to tell profound and complex stories that reflect major themes of war and the supernatural world. This thesis argues that Mizuki’s work should be reevaluated as a valuable contribution to modern art based on the following three qualities: technical mastery and innovation in visual art; socio-political and philosophical depth of content; and his impact on other contemporary Japanese artists. Such study is significant because of the popularity of manga and other graphic art in shaping both popular culture and the view of art adopted by younger generations. Thus, studying Mizuki has implications for our understanding of art and its intersection with popular culture, and raises questions regarding whether popular media like manga should be considered seriously by art historians.

Full textYokai is the designation commonly used to name supernatural beings as oni ( the Japanese ogre), kappa (a kind of aquatic being), created by men to explain the unknown phenomena around them like epidemics and natural disasters; this way, damaging events to men turned into a Yokai format. Nowadays these creatures are presented in the Japanese imaginary as an anime character (name given to Japanese animations), mangá (Japanese comics), games modern expressions of the popular culture of Japan. The goal of this research sought to trace the course made by these beings until they reached the yokai character status. The studies focused on the main representations of the yokai in the Heian Period (794-1192), in the Muromachi Period (1333-1573) and in the Edo Period (1603-1867), when several and important changes were perceived in the expression of these creatures until they culminated in characters created by the mangá artist Mizuki Shigeru (1922- ), responsible for introducing the ykai in the Japanese national imaginary world in the XX century. Academic research in the Portuguese language about the yokai is scarce. We expect with this study to present these creatures to the Academy and insert them in the academic context, awaking peoples interest for future projects.

Full textAccording to the actual context of great concern with the environment preservation and, at the same time, millions of homeless people due poverty and environmental catastrophes, arises the necessity of studying alternative construction materials, which can contribute to soften these issues. Based in this, this work focuses the use of paper tubes in the construction by the japanese architect Shigeru Ban. The construction systems created by the referenced architect and the technical characteristics of paper tubes that he uses in his works have been studied in this research. Preliminary technical tests have been done to characterize paper tubes made by a brazilian industry and to check if their technical characteristics would become possible the production of construction systems as the japanese works. This study, however, is only the beginning of several researches that will made until identify the viability of application this technology in Brazil.

Full textThis detour through the practice of machizukuri in the laboratory Satoh Shigeru at Waseda University provides a different perspective on the skills of the architect. The machizukuri takes place within the particular context of the Japanese city: its morphology, its social structure and its urban policies. The work of "translation" continues with an architectural history of machizukuri that informs the formation of specific tools and practices within the Waseda University architecture department. The thesis analyzes the mobilization of these skills within preparedness exercises reconstruction in the district of Shinjuku led by Satoh Shigeru laboratory and how the architect positioned himself inside a network of actors. Full textThis study aims to analyse Shigeru Ban's temporary architecture, connected with the concepts of ecology, recycle and sustainability, mainly focusing on its application in post disaster emergency contexts. The idea of temporality, in which an element has a determined life cycle, contrasts with the principles of permanence and Vitruvian firmitas commonly associated with architecture. Temporary constructions are architectonic structures designed to last for a determined arc of time, or with the capability of being transformed in time through little structural changings. The word temporality has a double meaning. On one hand, the temporality of usage, also called transience, that implies the persistency of the construction and the fast and continuous modification of the functions or of the people that use it. On the other hand, the physical temporality, that implies a limited life time of the building, and its dismantling or destruction at the end of the function for which it was built. The temporality that we aim to analyze, typical of the architecture of Shigeru Ban, is the physical one. It denotes a complete reversibility of the system, able to occupy a piece of land for a certain time and, once accomplished its function, return it "intact". Through the usage of a non convectional material - paper - , innovative and low-tech constructive systems based on dry assembling, the assembly speed and the possibility of dismantling and reusing the components that constitute the building, Shigeru Ban evolves towards a deeply reversible architecture, that minimizes waist and maximizes the chances of reusing and recycling material. The use of paper as a construction material, shaped in tubes, starts to be explored by the architect in 1986 and symbolizes Shigeru Ban's strong tendency for the pursue of lightness and creative freedom. In a period in which ecological, recyclable and sustainable concepts weren't yet object of frequent discussion, Ban's interest for paper is justified by his despise for waste and by his desire to use a cheap and, at the same time, resistant and durable structural material. The usage of paper tubes as structural material is applied to the majority of his temporary works, in particular in post disaster emergency contexts. The rescue activity of Shigeru Ban after disasters, carried out through the NGO VAN (Voluntary Architects' Network), consists in the construction of temporary residences and equipment made out of low cost, durable, recyclable/reusable and, whenever possible, local materials that offer comfort, protection and an adequate level of privacy to the victims of disasters. For the value of his humanitarian work, the architect has been recognized with the attribution of the Pritzker Prize in 2014. He was defined by the jury as "an outstanding architect who, for twenty years, has been responding with creativity and high quality design to extreme situations caused by devastating natural disasters. His buildings provide shelter, community centers, and spiritual places for those who have suffered tremendous loss and destruction. When tragedy strikes, he is often there from the beginning, as in Rwanda, Turkey, India, China, Italy, and Haiti, and his home country of Japan, among others."

The study of Shigeru Yoshida’s statement was an important topic in Japan after the Second World War. In Taiwan, however, there are not so much studies about him. According to major research, when he faced to make the China policy, his attitude seems to be ambiguous. And then, after Japan signed the peace treaty with Republic of China, Japan Government decided to establish the relationship with People’s Republic of China by “Political and Economic Isolation Strategy.” In this thesis, I’d like to determine the formation of China policy made through the cognition with China of Shigeru Yoshida. As a diplomatic, when Shigeru Yoshida was confronted with the crash to economy, he took the economy reconstruction policy as his main strategy. At that time, the market in China was very important to Japan. In 1949, there was the problem of Two Chinas. How did Shigeru Yoshida make the China policy when faced this problem? Meanwhile, would the formation of his China policy be connected with his economic reconstruction? In this thesis, I will discuss the questions more deeply.

Studies in Chinese philology (Xiao Xue) flourished in Qing(清) dynasty, and in particular during the reigns of Emperors Qianlong(乾隆) and Jiaqing(嘉慶). A lot of scholars worked at Erya(爾雅) and Shuowenjiezi, including Yan Yuan-Zhao(嚴元照) and Duan Yu-Cai(段玉裁). Yan Yuan-Zhao’s frustration with Erya was its misguided wordings, he therefore elucidated the authenticity of words and made distinction from loan words (Tongjie characters) based on Xu Shen’s(許慎) Shuowenjiezi in his book Erya Kuangming(爾雅匡名) , which has become one of the quintessential works on Erya research in Qing dynasty. Yan Yuan-Zhao and Duan Yu-Cai were both great scholars of studies in Shuowenjiezi at the time, the latter being the author of The Annotation of Shuowenjiezi(說文解字注). Comparative research has all along been an effective approach to the studying of a spectrum of curriculums–this paper provides detailed investigation and elaboration of Erya Kuangming Shigu(爾雅匡名.釋詁) by making reference to The Annotation of Shuowenjiezi, other works by the scholars then, as well as excavated documents that have come into light by now. There are five main objectives here –(i) To provide the audience with the corresponding elucidations of Erya Kuangming Shigu.(ii) To illustrate the importance of Yan Yuan-Zhao’s work Erya Kuangming in terms of readjustment of loan words.(iii) To provide elaboration of Erya Kuangming based on The Annotation of Shuowenjiezi.(iv) To correct misstatements in Erya Kuangming based on the excavated documents.(v) To recognise and promote the book Erya Kuangming. There are five main findings from this comparative research paper, which contains around 420,000 words in Chinese –1. What was successful about Erya Kuangming.2. What was not successful about Erya Kuangming.3. The truth revealed by the excavated documents in Erya. 4. The commentaries on Erya Kuangming Shigu.5. The comparative analysis on Erya Kuangming Shigu and The Annotation of Shuowenjiezi in terms of the interpretation of text.

According to eMarketer statistics until 2017, smartphone users account for up to 89.3% in all mobile users in Taiwan, which shows that smartphone has become a necessity of life. On account of the flourishing smartphone market, Tourism Bureau, MOTC (Ministry of Transportation and Communications) is promoting Smart Tourism Taiwan, which 3D tourism application system and Augmented Reality(AR) is included. However, facing global competition, many countries are now proactively promoting regional tourism. And in Japan, they combined bronze sculptures with manga, which successfully become one of tourism resources with local characteristics. With the advent of manga bronze sculptures, the erection of bronze sculptures is not only for memorial or decorating purpose, but also for sightseeing and city shaping now (Wu, T. L. 2018). On the other hand, one of the development goals is to make use of information and communications technology. For this reason, based on an application of Markerless AR on bronze sculptures, this study tries to design the weight of marker and to discuss if the weight feedback could improve the experience of AR. According to the results, some suggestions of applying AR on manga sculptures will be made in conclusion. As research object, this study will make a research on the bronze sculptures on Mizuki Shigeru Road, and choose the eight main characters of GeGeGe no Kitaro as the objects in model building. To clarify the definitions and development context, literature review in AR, flow experience, destination familiarity and manga bronze sculptures and field research and information collection on Mizuki Shigeru Road are included in this study. Based on the result of building Mizuki Shigeru Road AR system, we reach two conclusions in this study: 1. Weight design of AR Markers enhances AR experience. 2. Optimizing bronze sculpture model benefits the procedure of detecting and operating several AR markers simultaneously. In the end, there are three suggestions: 1.When the character pattern is unable to modify, increasing feature recognitions such as redesigning the background or adding icons can help the model displayed stably. 2. The operation of handheld marker would be restricted by wrist angles. It might be more easy to use head-mounted display with virtual button. 3.When operating Mizuki Shigeru AR system, the quality of display such as materials and colors might be uneven due to different device.4. In this AR system, people can get vocal, visual, tactile and interactive feedback. It can create emotional connection between users and the manga bronze sculptures by incorporating more interesting elements in this AR system.

In this thesis, it particularly discusses the Taoism Management Policy and Specification in Early Ming Dynasty. The Early Ming Dynasty, an inheritance of ancestral industry, was a period when foreigners managed in a row and then nominated in charge of the world’s Taoism master 43th generation Yu-Chu, Chang (1359-1410). He was born in this generation’s Taoism leader. In charge of the world’s Taoism master, Yu-Chu, Chang possessed religious rules. On one hand, he needed to reorganize the final years of the Yuan dynasty (元末) that remain decadent Taoism culture, and on the other hand, he needed to pander to Ming Dynasty Emperor of imperial authority. Thus, he established the New age Taoism and it adapted to Early Ming. Simultaneously, Ming Taizu (明太祖) managed the Taoism and Yu-Chu, Chang also wrote“Daoem shigui” (道門十規) to standard Taoism culture. Wherein, it can seem to in the management and Taoism standard which had “continuity”and “innovation.”Yu-Chu, Chang rebuilt Taoism Spread history, Taoism Classical and Talisman (經籙) system and renewed standard Taoist priest’s religions life that in“Daoem shigui”, besides, he wrote a standard classic which did not violate imperial government decree official system. Yu-Chu, Chang showed a“New age Taoism ”in the Early Ming Dynasty. There were lots of different meanings of Taoism and these attempted to let Early Ming Dynasty become a higher arrangement of ideas in a content of the“Daoem shigui”.
