Abstract:
This paper reviews several examples of Japanese tea architecture in order to identify its specific features in the context of its historical development. Based on this, the main principles of the formation of tea architecture in Japan are defined. The analysis is conducted in relation to three main factors that influenced the formation of tea architecture: vernacular architecture, noble architecture and the philosophical ideas of Zen Buddhism. As an example, three tea houses of the master Sen no Rikyu (1522-1591) were used, namely: Kasa-tei, Shigure-tei (Todaiji Monastery, Kyoto) and Tai-an (Myoki-an Monastery, Kyoto), and the palace of Villa Katsura (1620-1658), commissioned by Prince Toshihito. The Kasa-tei and Shigure-tei houses are characterised by active inheriting of the structural elements and forms of vernacular housing. The Tai-an is a vivid reflection of aristocratic and Zen traditions. In the architecture of villa Katsura there is an influence of several directions of aristocratic and vernacular architectural styles. In each example, the influence of these three factors was detected at several levels: in the formation of the environment of the tea house (tea garden), in the structure and composition of the buildings, in the internal space of the buildings and at the level of semantics of the complexes. Among the variety of teahouses, at each determined level the preference may be given to one or another stylistic direction. For example, the traditions of vernacular architecture in the Kasa-tei and Shigure-tei houses are increasingly expressed in the exterior of the buildings and in the overall character of the complex. The aristocratic and ascetic spirit of the Tai-an house is mainly expressed in the interior of the building. In the architecture of Villa Katsura – similar to the examples mentioned above – the tradition of vernacular architecture is mainly present in the exterior and surroundings of the building, while the interior stays within the aristocratic tradition. The basic principles of tea architecture identified in the paper are arranged according to their origin and localization of application in the final table.

Abstract:
Edo Shigusa was a system of behavior manners for Japanese merchants, was taught in the late Edo period. In the process of forming and developing this manner, the Edo-period instructors encountered many objections from the Tokugawa shogunate because they thought that its syllabus risked influence on the politics of the nation, causing Edo merchants not publicly but only in the form of word of mouth. Professor Shiba Mitsuakira was the instructor of Edo Shigusa, who is considered as the last surviving member of Edo Shigusa instructors, holded the seminar "Looking back to the good points of Edo Shigusa" in 1974. He synthesized all of syllabus in the Edo period, calling these manners are "Merchant manners", "Prosperity rules", "Edo Shigusa business philosophers" and finally, named them as “Edo Shigusa”. After restoration and development since 1980, Edo Shigusa has become a common standard in communication, a measure of manners not only for Japanese businessmen but also for ordinary people today. This study, from a cultural point of view, outlines some manners for Japanese merchants in the Edo period, influences in today's era, and analyzes its good and bad sides to explain the general information of Japanese businessmen in particular and Japanese people in general.

Abstract:

Shigeru Mizuki (1922-2015) is one of the most sophisticated and accomplished of modern manga artists. His work synthesizes ancient and modern Japanese visual artistic methods with contemporary tropes from Western graphic art to tell profound and complex stories that reflect major themes of war and the supernatural world. This thesis argues that Mizuki’s work should be reevaluated as a valuable contribution to modern art based on the following three qualities: technical mastery and innovation in visual art; socio-political and philosophical depth of content; and his impact on other contemporary Japanese artists. Such study is significant because of the popularity of manga and other graphic art in shaping both popular culture and the view of art adopted by younger generations. Thus, studying Mizuki has implications for our understanding of art and its intersection with popular culture, and raises questions regarding whether popular media like manga should be considered seriously by art historians.

Abstract:
Yokai is the designation commonly used to name supernatural beings as oni ( the Japanese ogre), kappa (a kind of aquatic being), created by men to explain the unknown phenomena around them like epidemics and natural disasters; this way, damaging events to men turned into a Yokai format. Nowadays these creatures are presented in the Japanese imaginary as an anime character (name given to Japanese animations), mangá (Japanese comics), games modern expressions of the popular culture of Japan. The goal of this research sought to trace the course made by these beings until they reached the yokai character status. The studies focused on the main representations of the yokai in the Heian Period (794-1192), in the Muromachi Period (1333-1573) and in the Edo Period (1603-1867), when several and important changes were perceived in the expression of these creatures until they culminated in characters created by the mangá artist Mizuki Shigeru (1922- ), responsible for introducing the ykai in the Japanese national imaginary world in the XX century. Academic research in the Portuguese language about the yokai is scarce. We expect with this study to present these creatures to the Academy and insert them in the academic context, awaking peoples interest for future projects.

Abstract:
According to the actual context of great concern with the environment preservation and, at the same time, millions of homeless people due poverty and environmental catastrophes, arises the necessity of studying alternative construction materials, which can contribute to soften these issues. Based in this, this work focuses the use of paper tubes in the construction by the japanese architect Shigeru Ban. The construction systems created by the referenced architect and the technical characteristics of paper tubes that he uses in his works have been studied in this research. Preliminary technical tests have been done to characterize paper tubes made by a brazilian industry and to check if their technical characteristics would become possible the production of construction systems as the japanese works. This study, however, is only the beginning of several researches that will made until identify the viability of application this technology in Brazil.

Abstract:
The town of Sakaiminato, on the western coast of Japan, has revitalized its local economy through the transformation of the downtown into a tourist destination for fans of the popular manga creator Shigeru Mizuki. The strategy used by the local community closely replicates the traditional pilgrimage patterns established in Japan; however, the focus has been shifted from a religious to secular world view. While the iconography and meaning has changed, the emotional resonance has remained the same, with fans of the series developing a shared sense of community and a connection to some trans-societal force. This attempt to link older religious practices with modern fan cultures has been further strengthened by directly tying tourism with new releases of Mizuki's work.

Full text
Abstract:
