Abstract:
The processes of territorial displacement during the dictatorships opened the gates for recognizing the existence of transnational connections and of a permanent diaspora, including a diaspora of knowledge that would be engrossed by new waves of migration due to economic downturns or the increased connections of these countries to the global arena. This chapter reviews such shifts in the frontiers of citizenship, moving analysis to transnational connections and permanent diasporas, including the diasporas of knowledge that increasingly changed the very meaning of being national and transnational, while connecting the countries to the global arena. It analyzes several novel initiatives aimed at the home countries in reconnecting with conationals whose life circumstances, experiences, and choices led them to remain in the countries of relocation.

Voß, Hans-Ulrich. Experiencing the Frontier and the Frontier of Experience: Barbarian perspectives and Roman strategies to deal with new threats. Edited by Alexander Rubel. Archaeopress Archaeology, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.32028/9781789696813.

Full text
Abstract:
'Experiencing the Frontier and the Frontier of Experience' deals with the Roman Empire’s responses to the threats which were caused by the new geostrategic situation brought on by the crisis of the 3rd century AD, induced by the ‘barbarians’ who – often already part of Roman military structures as mercenaries and auxiliaries – became a veritable menace for the Empire. Rome adopted different strategies: they oscillated between inclusion, warfare and other means of exerting influence. The contributions to this volume explore the archaeological evidence for Roman practice and especially the varying strategies of power and influence in the central regions on the one hand, and the south-eastern parts of the European ‘Barbaricum’ on the other. They show how ‘Divide et impera’ functioned as practical policy based on alliances, as well as consequent warfare, and diplomatic initiatives, which are traceable by prestige-goods and subsidia treasures found in the Barbaricum. The comparison of Roman imports in different parts of Iron-Age Europe can help understand better a complex process of shifting power and influence in an emerging new Europe, which transformed the Empire towards medieval ‘Herrschaft’ and social structure.

McDougal, Topher L. How Production Networks Adapted to Civil War in Liberia. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198792598.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter argues that firms in Liberia during the civil wars increasingly came to rely upon highly dispersed networks of traders to source from, and distribute to, rural hinterlands. Industrial manufacturing firms in Liberia shed important light on the structure of production networks in violent conflict. They serve as important nodes in the value-adding process that supply and distribution networks hook into, and their managers therefore have unique opportunities to observe the ways these networks adapt to, and traverse, the shifting combat frontier. In the broader context of this book, this case study then provides qualitative evidence for the claim that rural–urban trade networks in Liberia begin to exhibit exaggerated radial patterns, characterized increasingly by important urban hubs and limited importance of second-tier cities.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the Army Nurse Corps's (ANC) attempt to deal with not only civil rights activism but also women's rights and gender equality in a fast-changing society. Between the mid-1950s and the late 1960s, the ANC and its members simultaneously endorsed and impeded attempts to restructure race and gender roles and standards while endeavoring to meet the practical nursing needs of the U.S. Army. At the advent of the Vietnam War, following the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the ANC represented a new frontier of integration in the labor force. Yet the reality of the situation proved more complex. This chapter examines integration issues within the ANC in relation to the complicated nature of a broader domestic civil rights struggle. It shows that changing military policies regarding the race and sex of military nurses reveal a recurring negotiation between traditional race and gender relationships and shifting cultural norms.

Tomás, António. In the Skin of the City. Duke University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/9781478022763.

Full text
Abstract:
With In the Skin of the City, António Tomás traces the history and transformation of Luanda, Angola, the nation’s capital as well as one of the oldest settlements founded by the European colonial powers in the Southern Hemisphere. Drawing on ethnographic and archival research alongside his own experiences growing up in Luanda, Tomás shows how the city’s physical and social boundaries—its skin—constitute porous and shifting interfaces between center and margins, settler and Native, enslaver and enslaved, formal and informal, and the powerful and the powerless. He focuses on Luanda’s “asphalt frontier”—the (colonial) line between the planned urban center and the ad hoc shantytowns that surround it—and the ways squatters are central to Luanda’s historical urban process. In their relationship with the state and their struggle to gain rights to the city, squatters embody the process of negotiating Luanda’s divisions and the sociopolitical forces that shape them. By illustrating how Luanda emerges out of the continual redefinition of its skin, Tomás offers new ways to understand the logic of urbanization in cities across the global South.
