Gatlin, Stephen H. "William H. Sheldon and the culture of the somatotype." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/37907.

Full text
Abstract:
The burden of this dissertation is to show that William Sheldon’s somatotype project should be seen as an integral aspect of modernist culture. Sheldon engaged the same problems with modernity and the "Second Industrial Revolution" (urbanization, overpopulation, industrialization, alienation) that confronted modernist poets, novelists, and philosophers. In this I am elaborating Dorothy Ross’s recent metaphor, "modernist impulses in the human sciences" (1994). Both scientists and artists were responding to the social chaos and fragmentation engendered by WWI, by capitalism, and by a science and technology that was often felt to have run amok. Advocacy of eugenics for Anthony Ludovici, William Sheldon, and Aldous Huxley (polemics against "promiscuous breeding", overpopulation, medical and psychological holism, "aristocracy", nobility) was another means of defending conservative values against the onslaught of modernism. The German romantic, holistic, tradition (the "Goethean vision") in the physical and biological sciences that has been treated recently by Ann Harrington (1996) carried reactionary assumptions and priorities that duly influenced British and American constitutionalists. Sheldon’s quest of the somatotype, his attempt to map the human physique scientifically, was, at least in his case, a means of salvaging personality, character, and soul ina way that was consonant with the aims of German holism and hence, to a Significant degree, with the aims of the nazis, who appropriated the tradition for political purposes and propagandized it in their art. Sheldon’s studies in human constitution possessed the same "value-base" (Weingart) as much of German medicine and psychology during the first four decades of this century. Sheldon’s anti-Freudian position was intended to reinculcate a place for moral character and eugenic breeding in psychology. Sheldon insisted that character was a seasoned and hard-won proposition, as opposed to a cheap jettisoning of sexual inhibitions. Sheldon opposed the sexual origin of neurosis and replaced it with a highly disciplined character-building that was consistent with a nineteenth-century masculine ethos.

Morris, Edwin Kent. "Liberal Democracy & the Political: A Comparison of Carl Schmitt and Sheldon S. Wolin." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42167.

Full text
Abstract:
This study concerns the terms liberalism, the political, democracy, and liberal democracy focusing on the application of the terms in the discourse of two distinct political theorists: Carl Schmitt and Sheldon S. Wolin. I address the question of whether similarities exist between Schmitt and Wolinâ s theories? Specifically, are there similarities in their use of the terms listed above? Although both emphasize different aspects of the terms, I suggest they simultaneously share similar perspectives on them. In particular, I suggest that Schmitt and Wolin share in common attributes in their views on the purported problematic of liberal democracy. Furthermore, I suggest both theorists speak to the general concern that if the political cannot be realized, then democracy cannot be practice.

Abstract:
This paper grapples with the differences between genuine and ordinary democracy within the political thought of Jacques Rancière, Sheldon Wolin, and Hannah Arendt. Each discusses the problems of ordinary democracy and offer solutions in terms of what I call genuine democracy. Ordinary democracy is the established norm of liberal democracy celebrated as the stable and a desired “end” of political action. It is what happens when politics as usual becomes the norm and shuts the people from the halls of power. Genuine politics exist within the structure ordinary democracy and seeks to achieve the continuous re-establishment of democratic processes while in the process speeding up and disrupting “politics as usual”.

Leavey, James. "'Psycho-physical wholes' : the influence of F.M. Alexander and William Sheldon on Aldous Huxley's works." Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2015. http://research.gold.ac.uk/12302/.

Full text
Abstract:
Aldous Huxley’s writings, which exhibit his avid interest in all areas of knowledge, including the arts, the sciences, religion, politics, philosophy and psychology, display a tendency to adopt, and attempt to synthesise, the ideas of others, as well as a willingness to embrace unorthodox thinkers. This thesis examines how the works of Aldous Huxley were influenced by two men whose ideas focused upon the relationship between the mind and body: Frederick Matthias Alexander (1869-1955), inventor of the mind-body therapy known as the Alexander Technique, and Dr William Sheldon (1898-1977), a constitutional psychologist who developed a theory of mind-body types. The phrase ‘psycho-physical wholes’ in the thesis title is taken from a letter from Huxley to E. S. P. Haynes in March 1945: ‘Sheldon considers human beings as they really are – psycho-physical wholes or mind-bodies’.1 This is the central theme of the thesis; it will examine how Alexander’s and Sheldon’s particular conceptions of human beings as psycho-physical entities were profoundly influential upon Huxley’s writings. The thesis as a whole thus provides an important contribution to the study of Huxley’s conception of the relationship between mind and body, and the works he wrote which were impacted by this conception. It provides a contribution to the understanding of the influences that helped to shape the works of Huxley. It sheds further light on the origins of Huxley’s ideas and characters, thus providing additional insight into the often unorthodox ideas that influenced the works of writers and intellectuals in the interwar and postwar period.

Abstract:
Nowadays, probabilistic models are playing a significant role in various areas in- cluding machine learning, artificial intelligence and cognitive science, etc. How- ever, as those models are becoming more and more complex, it shows that the corresponding programs are really hard to maintain and reuse as well. Meanwhile, the current tools are not feasible enough to enable probabilistic modeling and ma- chine learning to be accessible to the working programmer, who has sufficient do- main expertise, but perhaps not enough expertise in probability theory or machine learning. Probabilistic programming is one possible way to solve this. Indeed, probabilistic programming languages are powerful tools to specify probabilistic models directly in terms of a computer programs. While programmers writes normal procedures, everything will be automatically translated into statistical distributions and then users can do inferences upon them. This project aims at exploring and implementing a probabilistic programming language, for which we name as Shelang. We use Scheme, a dialect of Lisp lan- guage which is originated from λ-Calculus, to implement a embedded probabilis- tic programming language. This paper mainly discusses about the design, algo- rithms, details of this implementation and several usages of Shelang and make a conclusion in the end.

Sealey, Sheldon M. "Treatment Decisions Involving Teeth with Intrapulpal Cracks: A Survey of Endodontists." VCU Scholars Compass, 2015. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/3714.

Full text
Abstract:
There is no universal protocol for diagnosing, treating and managing cracked teeth. The purpose of this survey was to investigate the use of traditional methods of crack detection and to explore how treatment decisions were made using an intrapulpal crack classification. The electronic survey was sent to 1115 active members of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) and The Digital Office (TDO™) community. Comparisons were assessed using logistic or repeated-measures regression. The most often used diagnostic method was probing. When the crack involved one wall, 85% of respondents would complete root canal therapy > 50% of the time or always. For two or more walls, the percentage dropped to 44%. When the crack involved the floor or orifices, 60% would not complete treatment. For necrotic teeth, 36% of respondents preferred extraction as opposed to 3% if vital. This survey illustrated the anecdotal nature of detection, diagnosis and management of cracked teeth.

Kerr, Phillip James. "Middle to early-late Wisconsin glaciation in north central Iowa: timing, distribution, and implications for reconstructions of the Laurentide Ice Sheet during MIS 3." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2018. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6445.

Full text
Abstract:
Data from new subsurface studies, lithologic analyses, radiocarbon dating, and geologic mapping demonstrate that an early middle Wisconsinan (MIS 3) to late Wisconsonan (MIS2) till sheet is more widespread in northcentral Iowa than previously assumed. This till had been mapped to the west of and beneath the late Wisconsinan (MIS 2) Des Moines Lobe (DML); this thesis research has shown that the boundary of that till sheet extends 40 to 50 km east of the DML margin. Sediments deposited by the MIS 3 glacier are termed the Sheldon Creek Formation; they share many lithologic properties with DML Dows Formation deposits. Some of these shared properties, such as clasts of Pierre Shale, suggest a similar northwesterly provenance and glacial flow from the Keewatin Dome of the Laurentide Ice Sheet during both glaciations. Radiocarbon ages of organic materials within and beneath the Sheldon Creek Formation, as well as stratigraphic relationships in cores and outcrops, suggest that the unit accumulated during two distinct advances, herein named the Ft. Dodge Advance (ca. 46-40 ka) and the Lehigh Advance (ca. 34-29 ka). The presence of ice in Iowa before the regional Last Glacial Maximum has important implications for modeling buildup of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) and understanding the regional variability of ice sheet extent during the last glacial period. Existing models the LIS buildup are challenged by the pre-MIS 2 chronology reported here, which puts the ice sheet much farther south during MIS 3b than had previously been reported. This points to a much earlier buildup of the Keewatin Dome than previously assumed. The timing of the Sheldon Creek advances appear to coincide with Heinrich events 3 and 5 in the North Atlantic, indicating that both the Keewatin and Laurentian Domes of the ice sheet were large at this time. Further work needs to be done to determine if the MIS 3b and early MIS 2 Sheldon Creek Formation deposits in Iowa are unique, or if there are other unrecognized deposits from these time periods.

Gooch, Amy Marie. "The Impacts of Feral Horses on the Use of Water by Pronghorn on the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, Nevada." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2014. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4351.

Full text
Abstract:
Feral horses occupy 31.6 million acres throughout western North America. Feral horses share similar habitats with a wide range of animal species, including pronghorn. Since horses are larger and often more aggressive than other animals of this region, they are generally socially dominant over all other native ungulate species. Pronghorn share water sources with horses in areas where both occur. In situations where horses exclude pronghorn from water, pronghorn fitness may be impaired, especially during the hottest months of the year when water is limited. The purpose of this study was to investigate interference competition between pronghorn and feral horses at water sources. During spring and summer 2010-11, we placed motion-sensitive cameras at water sources across the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge in northwest Nevada. Cameras were used to examine the overlap of water use by pronghorn and horses and to determine the occurrence of spatial or temporal partitioning of water between these species. Additionally, we made direct observations of horses and pronghorn at high-use water sources to record the occurrences and outcomes of pronghorn/horse interactions as well as differences in pronghorn behavior in the presence and absence of horses. Pronghorn spent more time on vigilance behavior and less time foraging or drinking in the presence of horses than in their absence. Nearly half of pronghorn/horse interactions at water resulted in pronghorn exclusion from water. Our data also suggest that temporal partitioning of water between horses and pronghorn on an hourly basis may be occurring.

Nordquist, Megan Kathleen. "Stable Isotope Diet Reconstruction of Feral horses (Equus caballas) on the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, Nevada, USA." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2011. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3183.

Full text
Abstract:
Feral horse management has become a subject of significant controversy in the United States. This is because of differing opinions and minimal recent empirical data on feral horses. In recent years, numbers of feral horses have increased due to governmental horse removal restrictions (specifically the Wild Horse and Burro act of 1971). With increasing numbers of feral horses on rangelands, land managers are challenged with identifying the appropriate course of action for satisfying groups with differing opinions. The purpose of this study is to characterize diet consumption through the use of stable isotope dietary analysis (δ15N and δ13C). We did this in order to measure the impact of feral horse forage consumption on rangelands and to propose strategies for improving habitat management and conservation. We obtained tail hair isotopic values from tail hair removed while horses that were held in squeeze chutes following a roundup. Resulting isotopic values were compared to plant isotopic values using plant samples obtained from the geographical areas as the horses in order to characterize diet. Contribution of the various plant species to the tail hair mixture values was determined using the EPA program IsoSource©. Initial analysis of tail hair isotopes demonstrated seasonal variation. During summer months, shrubs (mostly Artemesia spp, and Purshia Tridentate), Elymus elymoides, Juncus balticus, and Festuca idahoensis were the predominantly consumed vegetative species. During fall months, Leymus cinereus and Juncus balticus played a more significant role in feral horse diet. In the winter, shrubs were more heavily consumed along with Poa secunda. Springtime showed a shift towards forb consumption. Changes in seasonal consumption of forages are most likely linked to forage availability as well as equine preference. We analyzed plant metrics (specifically biomass, abundance, and cover) to compare a site with horses present to a site where horses had been removed the previous year and found relatively few differences between the two sites. With nearly all differences we found higher plant production (forage availability) on the site where horses were still present. In riparian areas however, there was more vegetation (specifically Carex rossii, Juncus balticus, and Poa secunda) on the site where horses had been removed. Within riparian areas, only Bromus tectorum (a plant not typically found in riparian areas but characteristic of degraded areas) showed significantly greater amounts of biomass on the site with horses present. Knowledge of plant species consumption will allow land managers greater ability to make scientifically based decisions regarding feral horse population control which is important in determining appropriate management levels of populations.

Gates, Susan Wharton. "Rediscovering the Heart of Public Administration: The Normative Theory of In His Steps." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/30513.

Full text
Abstract:
Public administration literature lacks richness and context regarding the moral history of the founding of the field in the early 1900s. As a result, current calls for "recapturing the soul" of public administration have failed to stimulate a theory-or even a working understanding-of how to "rehydrate" the observed desiccation of public life and revivify the concept of the public interest. In correcting the historical record, this dissertation shows that the "soul" of public administration stemmed from the field's deep roots in the social gospel movement of the early 20th century. For that short period, the nascent field was not viewed as a bastardization of constitutional order, but as a noble endeavor in which beloved sons and daughters participated in their nation's governance. As a representative character of that era, Charles M. Sheldon serves as an exemplar of a citizen administrator whose sojourn into the public square was characterized by deep faith, empathy for the common person and commitment to action-regardless of the personal cost. His optimism, innovation and creativity stand in sharp relief to today's dispirited and over-regulated public work force. Sheldon's best-selling book, In His Steps (1896), stands as a pre-modern parable for moral decision-making in a dynamic and uncertain postmodern environment. In allowing for uncertainty, discourse and experimentation, the book's operative question, "What would Jesus do?" enriches our understanding of normative theory as process. It also offers back the field's lost "soul" in the way of submission, empathy, covenant, grace and hope.

Vave is generally defined as a corpus of agricultural songs as they are sung and performed by Bajuni farmers - an ethnic subgroup of the Swahili - on the eve of burning the bush, a stage of slash and burn cultivation. Although the song’s main theme is agriculture and each cultivation step in particular is given attention, an analysis of the aesthetics of Vave from the viewpoint of oral literature unearths the secret and sacred dimension of Vave performance. Death, bereavement, resurrection, and spirituality are, besides agricultural cultivation, the basic aspects of the Vave. Indeed the Vave performance may be more correctly recognised as an ancient religious rite which has ancestral worship as a central issue. Although the worship of ancestors is irreconcilable with the Islamic belief system, Vave is still performed by the Muslim Bajuni farmers today. Rydell, Sofia. "Safe, Simple and Effective Cleaning of Shellac Coated Furniture : are Tensides a Well Motivated Alternative?" Thesis, Linköping University, Linköping University, Carl Malmsten - furniture studies, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-53271.

Full text
Abstract:

The aim of this report is to investigate whether there is one method for cleaning of shellac coated surfaces which could replace the other methods usually used in restorers/conservators workshops, a method which reaches up to a set of formulated standards concerning safety, efficiency and simplicity. Frequent use of organic solvents and materials with unknown, uninvestigated content constitutes a potential risk in a long term perspective, both for the worker and the object. If it is possible to replace these methods with one that is scientifically investigated, this must be seen as a better alternative. The range of different cleaning material has been looked into and from the set of standards one non-ionic tenside has been picked out for further investigation. Theoretically, non-ionic tensides is to be considered as more suitable for cleaning of shellac surfaces since they interact with the surface in a less harmful way than ionic tensides. From cleaning analysis it has shown that the non-ionic tenside Tinovetin® JUN gives pleasing cleaning results equivalent to the ordinary washing up liquid, “Fairy” (in Sweden known as “Yes”). However, from wetting ability analysis it shows that “Fairy” is more powerful. A contact angle analysis showed that Tinovetin® JUN leaves more residue than “Fairy” but the difference is not remarkable. Since washing up liquid contain ionic tensides, it is motivated to advocate Tinovetin® JUN preferably to “Fairy”.

Abstract:

This degree project is a study on traditional ethanol-based polishes. Ethanol-based polishes are applied with a pad and can be compared with the method today known as French Polishing or Hand Polishing. The report enter deeply into the subject and ends up with applied experiments with some selected polishes. The art of cabinetmaking can be studied down to minute detail. Polishes were no exception, especially not ethanol-based polishes, where most often exotic resins of different origin were mixed with great care and understanding in order to attain the most appropriate finish for every single piece. By mixing resins and ethanol different polishes were obtained for chairs, instruments, dressing furniture, panels etc.The report is meant to serve as historic review of some selected polishes from the first half of the 19th century. Before the practical polishing experiments is included information on handicraft techniques and background knowledge necessary for the actual polishing procedure.

Caldwell, Frances Elizabeth. "‘Educating ‘Shelias’: What are the social class issues for mature working-class women studying at contemporary New Zealand universities?’." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Educational Studies and Human Development, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/2361.

Full text
Abstract:
“…And you think you’re so clever and classless and free… …But we’re still fucking peasants as far as I can see. A working-class hero is something to be…” (Song sung by Marianne Faithfull, 1990). The quote above illustrates the conflict highlighted by this study between workingclass struggle (and possible middle-class exploitation) and working-class hopes and aspirations for a middle-class future. It also reflects the uncomfortable sense of being “between two worlds” and “belonging nowhere” that is described by the mature, working-class women university students in my study. This feeling of being not quite one thing or another is expressed in Lucey, Melody and Walkerdine’s (2002) phrase “uneasy hybrids”. It encapsulates the struggles, conflicts and successes faced by the four women in my study as they attempted to juggle family, study and work commitments, dealt with relationship break-ups, unexpected academic successes, and learned how to adapt to a middle-class environment. The project involved five case studies (although in the end only four were fully used) using a semi-structured interview and additional focus group discussion approach. My participants were four mature working-class women who were currently studying at a New Zealand University. Little research has been done on this demographic, particularly in New Zealand, despite interest generated by the 1980s British film Educating Rita. I compared my findings, in which the key themes were alienation, overwhelming struggle, strategising, and unexpected advantages and successes, with the issues raised in the film. There were some similarities in terms of relationship-break-down and not belonging being part of upward social mobility. However, it appeared the reality of changing class is less tidy, speedy and comfortable than Rita’s filmic ending, where she successfully incorporated her original working-class and new middle-class identities. The literature appeared to support the experiences of my participants who, despite their academic successes, talked about an on-going, disturbing sense of feeling “like a fraud”.

The aim of this work was to evaluate in vitro and in vivo the properties of a new natural resin-based fluoride varnish, Shellac F (Hoang-Tu Hung et al. Faculty of Odonto-Stomatologie - University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh city - Viet Nam). The results lead to the following conclusions : 1. Shellac F is not toxic for the pulp and the periodontium. 2. Shellac F decreases dentin permeability by obliterating the dentina canalicular openings. 3. Shellac F is effective as a desensitizing agent. 4. Shellac F has caries-preventive efficiency. It decreases the development of caries on the permanent first molar in post-erupted phase. The results of this work confirm those of previous studies and show this material can be used safely in preventive and curative dentistry. This prospect might contribute to improving public health, particularly in Viet Nam and in other developing countries where the financial resources are limited

Basten, Ruth Elizabeth. "The circle of life : narrative, performativity and ageing in Peter Cheeseman's documentary dramas 'Fight for Shelton Bar!' and 'Nice Girls'." Thesis, Keele University, 2014. http://eprints.keele.ac.uk/1323/.

Abstract:
The relationship between ageing and theatre has received relatively little scholarly attention. This thesis focuses precisely on this intersection by investigating the relationship between theatre and the ageing process drawing on critical gerontology and literary theory. The research explores the documentary dramas of Peter Cheeseman by looking in detail at two of the documentaries, Fight for Shelton Bar! (1972) and Nice Girls (1993). The thesis uses a complex bricolage style of analysis to explore what narratives of the life-course reveal about ageing and intergenerational relations in Nice Girls and Fight for Shelton Bar!; as well as discovering what impacts being involved with the Vic/New Vic documentaries have on individuals’ lives and their engagement with their community. The research uses different types of narrative: narratives taken from a study of the documentaries themselves; narratives as seen through the archive, which include alternative stories and discourses to those which shaped the finished documentaries; and contemporary narratives gathered from performers and original participants from both documentaries. The thesis situates Cheeseman’s documentaries in the context of twentieth-century theatre history. In addition, it innovates methodologically by presenting the contemporary narratives in the form of dramatic scripts, with analytical commentaries. The source analyses are taken from an in-depth exploration of the Victoria theatre archive. The thesis argues that this archival material is a complex affective record of the community’s past feelings about ageing as part of the life-course. It is through this layering of analysis that the thesis draws together thematic threads relating to community, family, intergenerational relationships, representation, shifting forms of engagement and ageing, looked at from a life-course perspective. The thesis argues that the Vic/New Vic theatre is a space that licences affective engagement. Consequently, attitudes to ageing emerge through the documentaries even though that was not the pre-determined focus of Cheeseman’s work.

Abstract:
In this thesis I wish to examine the ways in which several Australian choreographers have explored a variety of possible relationships between music and dance in their work. By examining their work and ideas I will show how they have each individually met the hallenge offered by modern dance by finding new relationships between the two art forms. I will focus on four Australian choreographers - Helen Herbertson, Don Asker, Beth Shelton and Sue Healey. Although these choreographers represent a fairly small cross section of the world of contemporary dance in Australia, I feel that their work reveals a diversity of approaches. On the basis of personal interviews with the choreographers about their work and an examination of other materials ( videos, program notes. etc.) I will discuss how they, as choreographers, perceive the 'role' of music and how they incorporate it into their work.

Abstract:
This thesis examines four tracts authored by three Christian Identity rhetors. The study argues that these rhetors employ elements of the narrative paradigm to spread their own brand of hate-based theology. This study employs a method of narrative criticism as outlined by Foss ( 1996) in examining Howard B. Rand's "Who Crucified Jesus?" and "The Verdict of Time"; Wesley A. Swift's "Who Crucified Christ?"; and Sheldon Emry's "Who Killed Christ?" Howard B. Rand was the leader of the Anglo-Saxon Federation of America during the 1930s, an organization which was the forerunner of the contemporary Christian Identity movement. Wesley A. Swift was a major leader of Christian Identity during the late 1940s through the 1960s.

Abstract:
This work concerns the characterization of thin film materials by terahertz time domain spectroscopy. For this purpose, we elaborated a terahertz setup in which the terahertz emission and terahertz detection are based on the use of femtosecond laser, semiconductors, ultrafast photoswitches or electro-optic crystals. The study of dielectric function of ferroelectrics thin film (barium titanate/-Ba1-xSrxTiO3) with temperature, give the importance of soft phonon mode. Finally, the electromagnetic behavior of conducting polymers based on polyaniline was made, in particular their shelding effectiveness in millimeter and sub-millimeter length

The cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is a vegetable belonging to the family Cucurbitaceae, of great importance in Brazil. It is grown, preferentially in tropical climate, in high temperature conditions. It has a high economical, nourishing and social value because it generates direct or indirect jobs, requiring a labor demand from its cultivation to its commercialization. Due to the cultivation expression, the seed physiological and sanitary quality constitutes an important factor, being responsible for limitations in the product quality which is addressed to commercialization. So, with this work, one aimed at verifying the influence of Fusarium moniliforme on the seed physiological quality of two cucumber cultivars: Wisconsin and Caipira, through the hydric restriction inoculation technique, besides assessing the efficiency of the vigor tests for the stratification of the lots according to its physiological quality. The isolate of F. moniliforme was obtained from cucumber seeds. Each cultivar was divided into three lots of different physiological quality, differentiated by artificial aging. The treatments consisted in: Absolute witness; PDA + mannitol 0.8 Mpa; PDA pure; PDA + mannitol 0.8 Mpa + F.moniliforme; and PDA + F. moniliforme. The seed physiological quality was evaluated through tests carried out in laboratory conditions and in greenhouse. The hydric restraint was efficient to infect the seeds of two cultivars by pathogen, proving that this influences negatively in physiological quality of them and it can be transmitted by these. For cultivar Wisconsin, the tests of germination, cold and seedling growth were sensible to the lot stratification in two physiological levels. In the emergence of plants the speed emergence index, the root length and dry matter were able to classify the lots in three physiological categories. For the cultivar Caipira, the tests of germination and cold stratified the lots in two levels of vigor. In the test of growth of seedlings, the length of hypocotyls and root presented sensitivity to the classification of the lots in three physiological levels. For the plant emergence, the length of the hypocotyls and root and, dry matter showed themselves apt to the lot classification according to the physiological quality of them.

Abstract:
“Homeomorphic'' is the standard equivalence relation in topology. To a topologist, spaces which are homeomorphic to each other aren't merely similar to each other, they are the same space. We study a class of functions which are homeomorphic at “most'' of the points of their domains and codomains, but which may fail to satisfy some of the properties required to be a homeomorphism at a “small'' portion of the points of these spaces. Such functions we call “almost homeomorphisms.'' One of the nice properties of almost homeomorphisms is the preservation of almost open sets, i.e. sets which are “close'' to being open, except for a “small'' set of points where the set is “defective.'' We also find a surprising result that all non-empty, perfect, Polish spaces are almost homeomorphic to each other.A standard technique in algebraic topology is to pass between a continuous map between topological spaces and the corresponding homomorphism of fundamental groups using the π1 functor. It is a non-trivial question to ask when a specific homomorphism is induced by a continuous map; that is, what is the image of the π1 functor on homomorphisms? We will call homomorphisms in the image of the π1 functor “tangible homomorphisms'' and call homomorphisms that are not induced by continuous functions “intangible homomorphisms.'' For example, Conner and Spencer used ultrafilters to prove there is a map from HEG to Z2 not induced by any continuous function f : HE→ Y , where Y is some topological space with π1(Y ) = Z2. However, in standard situations, such as when the domain is a simplicial complex, only tangible homomorphisms appear..Our job is to describe conditions when intangible homomorphisms exist and how easily these maps can be constructed. We use methods from Shelah and Pawlikowski to prove that Conner and Spencer could not have constructed these homomorphisms with a weak version of the Axiom of Choice. This leads us to define and examine a class of pathological objects that cannot be constructed without a strong version of the Axiom of Choice, which we call the class of inscrutable objects. Objects that do not need a strong version of the Axiom of Choice are scrutable. We show that the scrutable homomorphisms from the fundamental group of a Peano continuum are exactly the homomorphisms induced by a continuous function.

Abstract:

Abstract: Studies indicate that the main factor to be controlled to warrant the quality in packaged products is the oxygen concentration. This controlling can be determinant in the products shelf life. In this work, system (¿absorption cell¿) and methodology had been developed for characterize an active film containing low density polyethylene and a kind of oxygen scavenger additive dispersed throughout the polymer carrier, that, in the application, is part of a multilayer system packaging. This additive is activated by humidity contact and acts in a way of scavenging oxygen inside the packaging. The active film characterization consisted in determining the capacity and speed of oxygen scavenging by the film, that was kept inside the cell, where was carried out the oxygen concentration controlling by gas chromatography. The study of the temperature and the relative humidity influence in the oxygen scavenging was conducted by an experimental design composite 22. The additive dispersion in the polymer carrier (Optical microscopy), the surface roughness (MEV), the light transmission (spectrophotometry UV-visible) and the resin crystallization degree (DSC) were studied as well. The results indicated that the variable with the most influence in the oxygen scavenging was the relative humidity and the film showed the maxim scavenging and speed in temperatures above 15°C and relative humidity above 81,2%. The additive dispersion and the film surface roughness showed better results in film with concentrations above 5%. The film shows transparence lost even for low additive concentration (1%). The film crystallization degree reduces with the increase of additive concentration, this can promote the oxygen diffusion in the resin benefiting the contact between the additive and the oxygen and, though, it increases the scavenging by the film

Abstract:
In this research, a new approach to cattle hide treatments, based on using a natural, food-grade resin, Shellac, to reduce microbial cross-contamination from the hides onto carcass meat, was developed and evaluated. The basis of this treatment is immobilisation of microorganisms on cattle hide’s hair and subsequent reduction of their transmissibility from the hair onto carcass meat during dressing of slaughtered cattle. Under in vitro conditions, treatment of samples of visually clean and dry hides with 23% Shellac-in-ethanol solution reduced sponge-swabbing recoveries of general microflora (TVC) by a factor of 6.6 logs (>1000-fold greater than the 2.9 log reduction observed by ethanol alone), and of generic E. coli (GEC) and Enterobacteriaceae (EC) by factors of at least 2.9 and 4.8 logs, respectively. The reductions of these three groups of microorganisms were superior to those achieved by a sanitizer rinse-vacuum hide treatment. Significantly greater reductions of TVC recoveries from hides were achieved when using higher Shellac concentrations (23.0% and 30.0% rather than 4.8-16.7%) and when Shellac solution temperatures were 20-40°C rather than 50-60°C. Furthermore, the Shellac-based treatment also markedly reduced the E. coli O157 prevalence (3.7-fold reduction) on natural, uninoculated hides, as well as the counts of E. coli O157 on artificially inoculated hides (2.1 log reduction) when compared to corresponding untreated controls. Under the conditions of a hide-to-meat direct contact laboratory-based model, treatment of hides (of varying visual cleanliness) with the 23% Shellac solution produced significant reductions of microbial transfer from treated hide onto sterile beef: up to 3.6 log10 CFU/cm2 of TVC, up to 2.5 log10 CFU/cm2 of EC and up to 1.7 log10 CFU/cm2 of GEC. TVC reductions of microbial transfer from treated hide onto beef achieved by the Shellac hide treatment were superior to those achieved by the comparative sanitizer rinse-vacuum hide treatment, but reductions of EC and GEC did not differ between the two hide treatments. In a small commercial abattoir with unsatisfactory process practices (slaughtering dirty cattle, inadequate process hygiene), treatment of hides with Shellac produced significant microbial reductions on skinned beef carcasses: 1.7 log10 CFU/cm2, 1.4 log10 CFU/cm2 and 1.3 log10 CFU/cm2 of TVC, EC and GEC, respectively. TVC reductions on skinned beef carcasses achieved by the Shellac hide treatment were superior to those achieved by the comparative sanitizer rinse-vacuum hide treatment, but reductions of EC and GEC did not differ significantly between the two hide treatments. These investigations produced the first scientific evidence that treatment of cattle hides with aim of immobilising microflora on the hair can be very successfully used to reduce carcass meat contamination during the skinning operation, thus improving the microbiological status of the final beef carcasses as well as the beef safety in general. To achieve the full potential of this new treatment in practice, further research aimed at its further technical optimization under real-life meat industry conditions is necessary.
