Abstract:
We report on the stabilization of 15R Silicon Carbide (15R-SiC) grown by seeded sublimation method. It was found that polytype transitions are directly related to the occurrence of facets on the grown crystals. Once a foreign polytype is formed, its propagation is governed mainly by the interface shape of the crystal and its evolution during growth. A concave crystal shape enhances the expansion of foreign polytypes, usually formed at the periphery of the crystal. Then, foreign polytypes can either overlap the original polytypes (constant concave crystal shape) or form inclusions (change to convex crystal shape). On the contrary, an initially slightly convex interface repels foreign polytypes towards the edge of the crystal. The optimization of the growth interface shape can be a key issue towards the stabilization of bulk 15R-SiC crystals.

Abstract:
A semiempirical method for predicting the damping efficiency of hysteresis rods on-board small satellites is presented. It is based on the evaluation of dissipating energy variation of different ferromagnetic materials for two different rod shapes: thin film and circular cross-section rods, as a function of their elongation. Based on this formulation, an optimum design considering the size of hysteresis rods, their cross section shape, and layout has been proposed. Finally, the formulation developed was applied to the case of four existing small satellites, whose corresponding in-flight data are published. A good agreement between the estimated rotational speed decay time and the in-flight data has been observed.

Stabilization effect of sodium phosphate on crystalline phase and crystal shape of hemihydrate calcium sulfate whiskers was investigated. Morphology, thermal stability and phase composition of stabilized hemihydrate calcium sulfate whiskers were characterized by means of SEM, DSC-TG and XRD respectively. Results indicated that crystalline shape of hemihydrate calcium sulfate whiskers could be invariable in two hours at 100 °C with addition of 0.10 wt % sodium phosphate for 20 min. Meanwhile sodium phosphate had a good effect on whiskers morphology stabilization.

Martensite-to-Beta transformation temperatures of CuAlNiMn and CuAlNi shape memory alloys has been determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In CuAlNiMn alloys, each new betatizing treatment has resulted in randomly varying transformation temperatures on the same specimen and an anomalously diffuse and serrated Martensite-to-Beta transformation peaks in the first cycle. Therefore, as quenched alloy samples were thermally cycled for three times in DSC prior to ageing to obtain thermally stable and reproducible transformation temperatures and to eliminate the anomalous effect of betatizing on the transformation temperatures. CuAlNiMn alloys were aged in martensitic condition at temperatures in the range 80&

The analysis of fabrication process parameters and properties of carbon fibers made from naphthalene mesophase pitch was conducted in this thesis. The naphthyl pitch containing 100% mesophase pitch was used as a raw material and extracted to form pitch fibers through a melt spinning machine. These fibers were stabilized with various parameters. The effects of process parameters on the center and the outer structure, the oxygen content, the element distribution and the properties of the stabilized pitch fibers were investigated to find optimal parameters for the stabilization process. The stabilized pitch fibers were then carbonized and graphitized and their radial structure, crystalline patterns and related mechanical properties were evaluated to discuss the effect of process parameters and reaction mechanisms on the fiber’s properties. The results show that after stabilized at 250℃ for 8 h and carbonization or graphitization, the pitch fibers extracted at the melting temperature of 315℃ have better graphitization, heat and electric conductive and mechanical properties. The degree of graphitization of these fibers is 98.8% and their ID/IG from Ramon analysis is 0.34. These fibers also have a resistivity of 1.3 x 10-6 Ω.m, a thermal conductivity of 970 W / mK and a tensile strength of 860 MPa.

In this work, two kinds of Cu-Al-Mn shape memory alloys with different chemical compositions (Cu-8wt%Al-10wt%Mn, Cu-8wt%Al-9wt%Mn) were melted by VAR. After homogenized and hot rolled, the specimens were heat-treated by direct-quench or step-quench into oil-bath at 100℃, 150℃and 200℃. Then they were investigated by electrical resistance measurement, hardness test and shape memory recovery test to get their characteristics. Further studies were also conducted by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) in order to get the different phase structures of the alloys. Besides, thermal cycling experiments were used to study the effect of thermal cycling on the Shape Memory Alloy. The results shows that whether under direct-quench or step-quench treatments, both martensites in the two alloys are M18R type, and the extent of monoclinicity is greatly influenced by alloy-type and methods of heat treatment. In Cu-8Al-10Mn alloy, the 150℃ step-quenched specimen has the relatively greatest ordering; while in Cu-8Al-9Mn alloys, it is the direct-quenched one gets the first place. Moreover, when the step-quenched specimen proceeds cycling tests, the hysteretic loop area will get smaller with increasing cycling numbers, which means the shape recovery ability has a decreasing tendency. However, it doesn’t go this way under direct-quench treatment and shape recovery test shows that direct-quenched specimen has better shape memory effect.

In this thesis, we propose a new Digital Image Stabilization (DIS) algorithm that removes involuntary hand movements from the video sequences taken by a camcorder. In contrast to the known DIS techniques in the literature that perform the hand-shake estimation independently on the horizontal and vertical directions, the proposed method further considers the hand shake in the two-dimensional space. Other merits of the proposed DIS methods include: a reduced-complexity multi-resolution motion-estimation method, improved validation criteria for motion vectors, and a saturation-prevention motion correction mechanism. Performance evaluation of the system is conduced based on the perceptual quality and PSNR improvements in conjunction with an H.264 codec. Extensive experimental results substantiate the superiority of the proposed DIS algorithm.

The aim of this work is to prepare a star polystyrene containing gold nanoparticles,(PS)star -AuNPs,via anionic polymerization.The synthesis uses the arm-first method that controls the number of arms of (PS)star by varying the molar ratio of DVB to n-BuLi.Afterwards,we functionalize the living (PS)star by ethylene sulfide(ES).The resulting star polystyrene with thiol terminal groups.(PS)star-SH was then mixed with HAuCl4•3H2O in THF solvent in the presence of the reducing agent, super hydride. Upon the reduction of Au+ to Au atoms, the thiol groups of the polymer molecules were bonded onto the gold surface and a polymeric nanocomposite with well-distribution nanogold particles was thus formed. Compared with the linear counterpart,(PS)linear-AuNP, (PS)star-AuNPs has a better size distribution of gold nanoparticles and prevent more effectively the aggregation of gold nanoparticles. 1H-NMR、13C-NMR、TEM、XPS、TGA、DSC and UV-VIS have bene used to investigate the physical properties of the nanocomposite material.

In this work, twelve bent-shaped molecules based on 1,3,4-oxadiazole cores were successfully synthesized. These bent-shaped molecules possessing nitro, amino or methoxy group and hexoxy or 2-octyloxy tail were firstly applied to extend the blue phase range (BP) in the blue phase liquid crystal (BPLC) mixture consisting of host Schiff base mesogen H-EI6 and chiral dopant S811 or ISO(6OBA)2. The results indicate that the bent-shaped molecules with nitro group doped into this BPLC mixture are not beneficial to BP stabilization. When 10.0 wt% ratio of bent-shaped molecule OctBiPhOXDNH2 having amino group and 2-octyloxy tail is doped into this BPLC mixture, the BP range can be extended from 36.0 oC to 47.0 oC and the ending temperature of BP can be decreased from 77.0 oC to 61.0 oC. Interestingly, the broad BP range (57.0 oC) can be extended by doping 10.0 wt% ratio of bent-shaped molecule C6OPhOXDOMe possessing methoxy group and hexoxy tail into this BPLC mixture. When the doping ratio of bent-shaped molecule C6OPhOXDOMe increases up to 12.0 wt%, wide BP range (62.0 oC) can be obtained. The ending temperature of BP with 34.0 oC is almost near room temperature when the doping ratio of bent-shaped molecule C6OPhOXDOMe further increases up to 16.0 wt%. Accordingly, this study offer possible approaches for the use of bent-shaped molecule as dopant diluted with NLCs, which may be used for the future applications of room-temperature eutectic LC mixtures with wide BP ranges.

In this work, the new T-shaped Schiff base molecule OH-ETI6 with no mesophase was prepared for decreasing the formation temperature of blue phase (BP) in this study. We found the formation temperature of host nematic liquid crystalline (NLC) mixtures utilized in BP could be decreased from 147.0 oC to 87.5 oC by mixing rodlike racemic Schiff base mesogen H-EI6 with 40 wt% ratio of T-shaped Schiff base molecule OH-ETI6. Notably, when 35 wt% of chiral dopant S811 is added into the NLC mixture consisting of 40 wt% OH-ETI6 and 60 wt% H-EI6, the BP range at room temperature (RT) between 41.0 oC and 15.0 oC could be obtained. Similarly, these trends could be also observed in the NLC mixtures consisting of 60 wt% difluoro substituted Schiff base mesogen H-EI6-F and 40 wt% T-shaped Schiff base molecule OH-ETI6. The RTBPs (33.0 oC -13.0 oC) also could be induced by adding 35 wt% of chiral dopant S811 into this NLC mixture. Subsequently, monomers (RMs) C6M and TMPTA (3 wt%:2 wt%) were added into the BPLC consisting of H-EI6 blended with 40 wt% T-shaped Schiff base molecule OH-ETI6 and doped with 35 wt% chiral dopant S811 to fill the disclination in 3D cubic lattice of BP and broaden BP range with more than 32.0 oC. Accordingly, this study offers possible approaches for the use of T-shaped Schiff base molecule as host diluted with NLCs, which may be used for the future applications of room-temperature eutectic LC mixtures with wide BP ranges.

We found the formation temperature of host nematic liquid crystalline (NLC) mixtures utilized in blue phase (BP) could be decreased from 122.5 ℃ to 60.0 ℃ by mixing rodlike racemic biphenyl mesogen C6OBiPhI-H with 50 wt.% ratio of T-shaped biphenyl molecule C6OBiPhI-T. When 30 wt.% of chiral dopant S811 is added into the equiweight NLC mixture, BP near room temperature (RT) with the range between 30.5 ℃ and 25.0 ℃ could be obtained. Similarly, these trends could be also observed in the NLC mixtures consisting of the equiweight difluoro substituted biphenyl mesogen C6OBiPhI-FF and T-shaped biphenyl molecule C6OBiPhI-T. The RTBPs (32.0 ℃-18.0 ℃) also could be induced by adding 30 wt.% of chiral dopant S811 or 10 wt.% ISO(6OBA)2 into this NLC mixture. On the other hand, reactive monomers (RMs) C6M and TMPTA (3 wt.%:2 wt.%) are added into the BPLCs consisting of C6OBiPhI-FF to fill the disclination in 3D cubic lattice of BP and slightly broaden the BP range from ca. 26 ℃ to 30 ℃. However, BP range shortens to 11 ℃ after BPLCs which are doped with reactive monomers are irradiated in UV light. Notably, broad RTBP range (48.4 ℃ to 16.7 ℃) can be induced when the same ratio of reactive monomers are added into a chiral mixture composed of the host NLC mixtures consisting of 70 wt.% C6OBiPhI-FF and 30 wt.% C6OBiPhI-T, blended with 10 wt.% ISO(6OBA)2. Furthermore, 18 wt.% of commercial NLC 5CB or E7 is blended with the aforementioned chiral mixture, only chiral nematic(N*) phase can be observed without BP due to poor miscibility caused by the difference of molecular structure. It can be concluded that the addition of appropriate ratio of T-shaped biphenyl molecule C6OBiPhI-T into a chiral mixture consisting of rodlike racemic biphenyl mesogens blended with chiral dopant S811 or ISO(6OBA)2 can decrease the formation temperature of BPs and induce RTBPs. Accordingly, this study offers possible approaches for the use of T-shaped biphenyl molecule as host diluted with NLCs, which may be used for the future applications of room-temperature eutectic LC mixtures with wide BP ranges.

During the stabilization phase, a new political communication order (PCO) takes shape through the building of norms, institutions, and regulations that serve to fix the newly established status quo in place. This status quo occurs when formerly innovative political communication activities become mundane, yet remain powerful. Much of the chapter details the pattern of communication regulation and institution construction over time. In particular, this chapter explores the instructive similarities and key differences between the regulation of radio and the internet, which offers important perspectives on the significance of our current place in the PCC and the consequences of choices that will be made over the next few years.

This paper presents a fuzzy based adaptive control approach for stabilization of Two wheeled robot (TWR) system. The TWR consists of a robot chassis mounted on two movable wheels. The objective is to stabilize the proposed system within desired time, minimum overshoot and at desired location. The data samples collected from simulation results of fuzzy controllers were used for training, tuning and optimisation of an adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system(ANFIS) controller. A Matlab Simulink model of the system has been built using Newton's second law of motion. The effect of shape and number of membership functions on training error of ANFIS has also been analysed. The designing of fuzzy rules for both fuzzy and ANFIS controller were carried out using gbell shape memberships. Simulations were performed which compared and validated the performance of both the controllers.

All types of birefringent (but not polarizing) fiber ring resonators present environmentally-induced variations in the fringe shape that cannot be eliminated passively.1 A fringe shape stabilization system has been constructed, for use with fiber ring resonators with power exchange between the birefringent axes.2-4 The system works by keeping the depth of successive resonant dips equal, through a feedback loop that controls the fiber birefringence Δn. Two schemes for controlling Δn are investigated: in the first less efficient scheme, the entire loop is subjected to stretching, causing a fringe drift of more than 100 fringes. In the second scheme, the fiber is subjected to a localized compression, which changes Δn while having only a small effect on the average refractive index, thus causing a smaller fringe drift. When the resonator is used as a high-resolution spectrum analyzer, either stabilization scheme can be used; but the second scheme allows the resonator to be also used as a sensor, as it interferes little with the signal recovery system. With this stabilization system the resonator can operate in a variable environment with minimal deterioration in performance.

The stabilization of premixed flames within swirling flows produced by an axial-plus-tangential swirler is investigated in an atmospheric test rig. In this system, flames are stabilized aerodynamically away from the solid elements of the combustor without help of any solid anchoring device. Experiments are reported for lean CH4/air mixtures, eventually also diluted with N2, with injection Reynolds numbers varying from 8 500 to 25 000. Changes of the flame shape are examined with OH* chemiluminescence and OH laser induced fluorescence measurements as a function of the operating conditions. Particle image velocimetry measurements are used to reveal the structure of the velocity field in non-reacting and reacting conditions. It is shown that the axial-plus-tangential swirler allows controlling the flame shape and the position of the flame leading edge with respect to the injector outlet. The ratio of the bulk injection velocity over the laminar burning velocity Ub/SL, the adiabatic flame temperature Tad and the swirl number S0 are shown to control the flame shape and its position. It is then shown that the axial flow field produced by the axial-plus-tangential swirler is different from those produced by axial or radial swirlers. It takes here a W-shape profile with three local maxima and two minima. The mean turbulent flame front also takes this W-shape in an axial plane, with two lower positions located slightly off-axis and corresponding to the positions where the axial flow velocity is minimum. It is finally shown that these positions can be inferred from axial flow velocity profiles under non-reacting conditions.

The ability of a morphing blade to change its geometry according to the different operating conditions represents a challenging approach for the optimization of turbomachinery performance. In this paper experimental and CFD numerical analyses on a morphing blade for a heavy-duty automotive cooling axial fan are proposed. Starting from the experimental results proposed in the first part of this work, a morphing blade, made of Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) strips embedded in a polymeric structure, was thoroughly tested. In order to assess the ability of the strips to reach a progressive and smooth shape changing evolution, several experiments were performed in a purpose-built wind tunnel. The morphing blade changed its shape as the strips were thermally activated by means of air stream flow. The bending deformation evolution with the increasing number of thermal cycles was evaluated by digital image analysis techniques. After the analyses in the wind tunnel CFD numerical simulations of a partially shrouded fan composed of five morphing blades were performed in order to highlight the evolution of the fan performance according to air temperature conditions. In particular, the capability of the blade activation was evaluated by the comparison between the fan performance with non-activated blades and with activated blades. The results show a progressive stabilization of the shape memory behavior after the first cycle. The blade deformation led to a significant improvement in fan performance at a constant rotational velocity. The CFD numerical simulation points out the differences in the overall performance and of three-dimensional fluid dynamic behavior of the fan. This innovative concept is aimed at realizing a sensorless smart fan control, permitting (i) an energy saving that leads to fuel saving in the automotive application fields and (ii) an increase in engine life thanks to a strong relationship between the engine thermal request and the cooling fan performance.

With the miniaturization of mechanical and electrical systems, the demands for small-scale power resources with high energy density have promoted studies on small-scale combustors as well as methods to achieve stable small-scale combustion. In the present paper, a micro swirl injector for a small-scale combustor was designed to study the shape and stability of swirl flame in a 4 mm diameter quartz tube experimentally. The influences of fuel equivalence ratio, axial average velocity in the tube, and structure of the swirler exit were investigated under atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature. The fuel equivalence ratio was in the range of 0.5 to 3.0 and axial average velocity varied from 0.2 to 6 m/s. Methane was used as fuel. Results show that when the axial average velocity increases to a certain value and is kept constant, the methane flame abruptly changes from a swirl flame outside the tube into a stable spindle flame located at the exit of the swirl injector inside the tube within certain limits of equivalence ratio. The equivalence ratio ranges that the shape transition can happen extends with the increase of axial average velocity to certain limits, which is approximately 0.7–1.1 for methane. While under low axial velocity conditions, the spindle flame cannot be formed by the changing of equivalence ratio under a certain velocity, it can be formed and stabilized in a wide equivalence ratio range by slowly decreasing the axial velocity of a high-velocity spindle flame under a constant equivalence ratio of the premixed mixture. A flare at the exit of the swirl injector has little influence on stability limits while it makes the spindle flame to shift down and anchor nearer to the swirler exit. Flame shapes under the structure are characterized, and a brief explanation is given based on the vortex bursting mechanism and the match between local gas velocity and flame propagation velocity.

Abstract:
The size and shape of plant leaves are extremely diverse within and among species, and are also sensitive to growth conditions. Compound leaves, such as those of tomato, maintain morphogenetic activity during early stages of their development, enabling them to elaborate lateral appendages such as leaflets. The aim of the research project was to understand the interaction between the plant hormone auxin, the putative auxin response inhibitor ENTIRE (E, SlIAA9) and the NAM/CUC transcription factor GOBLET (GOB) in compound-leaf development in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). The specific aims of the project were: 1. Investigation of the role of GOB in compound-leaf development. 2. Characterization of E function in auxin signaling. 3. Characterization of the role of auxin in compound-leaf development. 4. Investigation of the genetic and molecular interaction between E and GOB. 5. Investigate the role of these factors in fruit development. There were no major changes in these objectives. GOB was shown to mark and promote the boundaries between the leaf and initiating leaflets. Its accurate distribution was found to be required for proper leaflet initiation and separation. E was found to interact with the TIR1 and AFB6 proteins in an auxin-dependant manner, indicating that these are functional auxin receptors that mediate E degradation in the presence of auxin. This was further supported by the stabilization of E by a mutation in domain II of the protein, which is thought to mediate its auxin-dependant degradation. Over expression of this stabilized form in tomato leaves and characterization of the e mutant phenotype and the E expression domain indicated that E acts between initiating leaflets to inhibit auxin response and lamina growth. Generation and analysis of tomato plants expressing the auxin response reporter DR5::VENUS, and analysis of the effect of auxin microapplication or overexpression of an auxin biosynthesis gene, indicated that auxin marks the sites of leaflet initiation and promotes lamina growth. Investigation of the molecular and genetic interaction between auxin, GOB and E revealed a complex network of mutual regulation that is utilized to precisely pattern the leaf margin in a manner that enables the combination of tight control and flexibility. E, auxin and GOB were shown to affect fruit development and fruit set, and in an extension of the project are currently utilized to identify new players that affect these processes. The research project yielded enhanced understanding of the mechanisms of compound leaf patterning and provided tools that will enable the manipulation of leaf shape and fruit set.

From this edition, the Financial Stability Report will have fewer pages with some changes in its structure. The purpose of this change is to present the most relevant facts of the financial system and their implications on the financial stability. This allows displaying the analysis more concisely and clearly, as it will focus on describing the evolution of the variables that have the greatest impact on the performance of the financial system, for estimating then the effect of a possible materialization of these risks on the financial health of the institutions. The changing dynamics of the risks faced by the financial system implies that the content of the Report adopts this new structure; therefore, some analyses and series that were regularly included will not necessarily be in each issue. However, the statistical annex that accompanies the publication of the Report will continue to present the series that were traditionally included, regardless of whether or not they are part of the content of the Report. In this way we expect to contribute in a more comprehensive way to the study and analysis of the stability of the Colombian financial system. Executive Summary During the first half of 2015, the main advanced economies showed a slow recovery on their growth, while emerging economies continued with their slowdown trend. Domestic demand in the United States allowed for stabilization on its average growth for the first half of the year, while other developed economies such as the United Kingdom, the euro zone, and Japan showed a more gradual recovery. On the other hand, the Chinese economy exhibited the lowest growth rate in five years, which has resulted in lower global dynamism. This has led to a fall in prices of the main export goods of some Latin American economies, especially oil, whose price has also responded to a larger global supply. The decrease in the terms of trade of the Latin American economies has had an impact on national income, domestic demand, and growth. This scenario has been reflected in increases in sovereign risk spreads, devaluations of stock indices, and depreciation of the exchange rates of most countries in the region. For Colombia, the fall in oil prices has also led to a decline in the terms of trade, resulting in pressure on the dynamics of national income. Additionally, the lower demand for exports helped to widen the current account deficit. This affected the prospects and economic growth of the country during the first half of 2015. This economic context could have an impact on the payment capacity of debtors and on the valuation of investments, affecting the soundness of the financial system. However, the results of the analysis featured in this edition of the Report show that, facing an adverse scenario, the vulnerability of the financial system in terms of solvency and liquidity is low. The analysis of the current situation of credit institutions (CI) shows that growth of the gross loan portfolio remained relatively stable, as well as the loan portfolio quality indicators, except for microcredit, which showed a decrease in these indicators. Regarding liabilities, traditional sources of funding have lost market share versus non-traditional ones (bonds, money market operations and in the interbank market), but still represent more than 70%. Moreover, the solvency indicator remained relatively stable. As for non-banking financial institutions (NBFI), the slowdown observed during the first six months of 2015 in the real annual growth of the assets total, both in the proprietary and third party position, stands out. The analysis of the main debtors of the financial system shows that indebtedness of the private corporate sector has increased in the last year, mostly driven by an increase in the debt balance with domestic and foreign financial institutions. However, the increase in this latter source of funding has been influenced by the depreciation of the Colombian peso vis-à-vis the US dollar since mid-2014. The financial indicators reflected a favorable behavior with respect to the historical average, except for the profitability indicators; although they were below the average, they have shown improvement in the last year. By economic sector, it is noted that the firms focused on farming, mining and transportation activities recorded the highest levels of risk perception by credit institutions, and the largest increases in default levels with respect to those observed in December 2014. Meanwhile, households have shown an increase in the financial burden, mainly due to growth in the consumer loan portfolio, in which the modalities of credit card, payroll deductible loan, revolving and vehicle loan are those that have reported greater increases in risk indicators. On the side of investments that could be affected by the devaluation in the portfolio of credit institutions and non-banking financial institutions (NBFI), the largest share of public debt securities, variable-yield securities and domestic private debt securities is highlighted. The value of these portfolios fell between February and August 2015, driven by the devaluation in the market of these investments throughout the year. Furthermore, the analysis of the liquidity risk indicator (LRI) shows that all intermediaries showed adequate levels and exhibit a stable behavior. Likewise, the fragility analysis of the financial system associated with the increase in the use of non-traditional funding sources does not evidence a greater exposure to liquidity risk. Stress tests assess the impact of the possible joint materialization of credit and market risks, and reveal that neither the aggregate solvency indicator, nor the liquidity risk indicator (LRI) of the system would be below the established legal limits. The entities that result more individually affected have a low share in the total assets of the credit institutions; therefore, a risk to the financial system as a whole is not observed.
