Abstract:
Abstract. During the Asian summer monsoon season, prevailing southeasterly–southwesterly winds are subject to delivering air pollutants from the North China Plain (NCP) to northeast and northwest China. In the present study, the WRF-CHEM model is used to evaluate contributions of trans-boundary transport of NCP emissions to the air quality in northeast and northwest China during a persistent air pollution episode from 22 to 28 May 2015. The WRF-CHEM model generally performs well in capturing the observed temporal variation and spatial distribution of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), ozone (O3), and NO2. The simulated temporal variation of aerosol species is also in good agreement with measurements in Beijing during the episode. Model simulations show that NCP emissions contribute substantially to the PM2.5 level in Liaoning and Shanxi provinces, the adjacent downwind areas of the NCP, with an average of 24.2 and 13.9 µg m−3 during the episode, respectively. The PM2.5 contributions in Jilin and Shaanxi provinces are also appreciable, with an average of 9.6 and 6.5 µg m−3, respectively. The average percentage contributions of NCP emissions to the PM2.5 level in Liaoning, Jilin, Shanxi, and Shaanxi provinces are 40.6, 27.5, 32.2, and 20.9 %, respectively. The NCP emissions contribute remarkably to the O3 level in Liaoning province, with an average of 46.5 µg m−3, varying from 23.9 to 69.5 µg m−3. The O3 level in Shanxi province is also influenced considerably by NCP emissions, with an average contribution of 35.1 µg m−3. The O3 level in Shanxi province is also influenced considerably by NCP emissions, with an average contribution of 35.1 µg m−3. The average O3 contributions of NCP emissions to Jilin and Shaanxi provinces are 28.7 and 20.7 µg m−3, respectively. The average percentage contributions of NCP emissions to the afternoon O3 level in Liaoning, Jilin, Shanxi, and Shaanxi provinces are 27.4, 19.5, 21.2, and 15.8 %, respectively. However, the effect of NCP emissions on the air quality in Inner Mongolia is generally insignificant. Therefore, effective mitigation of NCP emissions not only improves the local air quality, but is also beneficial to the air quality in northeast and northwest China during the Asian summer monsoon season.

Abstract:
With several decades of concerted control efforts, visceral leishmaniasis(VL) eradication had almost been achieved in China. However, VL cases continue to be detected in parts of western China recent years. Using data of reported cases, this study aimed to investigate the epidemiology and spatio⁃temporal distribution, of mountain-type zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (MT-ZVL) in China between the years 2015 and 2019. Epidemiological data pertaining to patients with visceral leishmaniasis (VL) were collected in Gansu, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Shanxi, Henan and Hebei provinces between the years 2015 and 2019. Joinpoint regression analysis was performed to determine changes in the epidemic trend of MT-ZVL within the time period during which data was collected. Spatial autocorrelation of infection was examined using the Global Moran’s I statistic wand hotspot analysis was carried out using the Getis-Ord Gi* statistic. Spatio-temporal clustering analysis was conducted using the retrospective space-time permutation flexible spatial scanning statistics. A total of 529 cases of MT-ZVL were detected in the six provinces from which data were collected during the study time period, predominantly in Gansu (55.0%), Shanxi (21.7%), Shaanxi (12.5%) and Sichuan (8.9%) provinces. A decline in VL incidence in China was observed during the study period, whereas an increase in MT-ZVL incidence was observed in the six provinces from which data was obtained (t = 4.87, P < 0.05), with highest incidence in Shanxi province (t = 16.91, P < 0.05). Significant differences in the Moran’s I statistic were observed during study time period (P < 0.05), indicating spatial autocorrelation in the spatial distribution of MT-ZVL. Hotspot and spatial autocorrelation analysis revealed clustering of infection cases in the Shaanxi-Shanxi border areas and in east of Shanxi province, where transmission increased rapidly over the study duration, as well as in well know high transmission areas in the south of Gansu province and the north of the Sichuan province. It indicates resurgence of MT-ZVL transmission over the latter three years of the study. Spatial clustering of infection was observed in localized areas, as well as sporadic outbreaks of infection.

Abstract:
We analyzed the synchronous relationship between forest cover and species distribution to explain the contraction in the distribution range of the brown eared-pheasant (Crossoptilon mantchuricum) in China. Historical resources can provide effective records for reconstructing long-term distribution dynamics. The brown eared-pheasant’s historical distribution from 25 to 1947 CE, which included the three provinces of Shaanxi, Shanxi, and Hebei based on this species’ habitat selection criteria, the history of the forests, ancient climate change records, and fossil data. The current species distribution covers Shaanxi, Shanxi, and Hebei provinces, as well as Beijing city, while Shanxi remains the center of the distribution area. MaxEnt model indicated that the suitable conditions of the brown eared-pheasant had retreated to the western regions of Shanxi and that the historical distribution area had reduced synchronously with the disappearance of local forest cover in Shanxi. We built a correlative relationship between the presence/absence of brown eared-pheasants and forest coverage and found that forest coverage in the north, northeast, central, and southeast areas of the Shanxi province were all less than 10% in 1911. Wild brown eared-pheasants are stable in the Luliang Mountains, where forest coverage reached 13.2% in 2000. Consequently, we concluded that the distribution of this species is primarily determined by vegetation conditions and that forest cover was the most significant determining factor.

Abstract:
The paper empirically investigated the relationship between GDP and carbon emissions in Shanxi Province, P. R. China, from 1998 to 2012. Firstly, the unit root test and co-integration test are carried out for the two time series, and the co-integration equations are obtained. Then the Granger causality test was carried out, and it is found that when the lag order is 3, the carbon emissions of Shanxi Province is the Granger cause of GDP, while GDP is not the Granger cause of carbon emissions. The conclusion of the study shows that energy consumption in Shanxi Province still brings obvious economic benefits. The economic development of Shanxi Province has not caused a significant increase in carbon emissions in the past 15 years, which may be due to the preliminary effect of the economic transformation of Shanxi Province in recent years. This is consistent with the result that the carbon emission per unit GDP of Shanxi Province shows a downward trend in the past 15 years. Finally, it is put forward that active adjustment of energy structure, development of renewable energy, implementation of technological innovation, optimization of industrial structure and reasonable government intervention are effective measures for sustainable regional economic growth.

Full text
Abstract:
In May of 2004 and 2005, several diseased wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants showing extreme dwarfing, various types of yellowing, and reduced or no heading were found in the breeding fields of the Institute of Crop Science, Shanxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, China. On the basis of these symptoms, infection with Wheat dwarf virus (WDV) was suspected. Total DNA was extracted from diseased plants with the DNeasy Plant Mini kit (Qiagen, Hilden, Germany). Primers were designed based on the WDV-Enkoping1 genome sequence (NC_003326) (1), including: 245f, 5′-CGACTACGCCTGGCGAACATTTG-3′ (residues 245–267); 806r, 5′-TCTGGCATTGCCTGTTTCGG-3′ (complementary to residues 787–806); 1381f, 5′-CAGTGACATCTTCGCCGGAG-3′ (residues 1381–1400); and, 1886r, 5′-ACTCCGTAAGCCTCGAATCC-3′ (complementary to residues 1867–1886). With primer pairs 245f/806r, 1381f/1886r, 245f/1886r, and 1381f/806r, PCR products of 560, 506, 1642, and 2,275 bp were expected, respectively. After amplification, fragments of the expected sizes were seen on 1% (w/v) agarose gels. The fragments were purified by using a DNA gel extraction kit (TaKaRa, Dalian, China) and cloned into the pGEM-T vector (Promega, Madison, WI). The plasmids were transformed into E. coli strain DH5α and plasmid DNA was isolated from overnight cultures by alkaline lysis. Insert sequences were determined using the dideoxynucleotide chain termination method with an automated sequencer (ABI BigDye 3.1, Applied Biosystems, Foster City, CA). At least three independently isolated clones were analyzed for each PCR product. The compiled 2,750 nt sequence (GenBank Accession No. DQ868525) was 98.1, 98.5, 97.8, and 97.9% identical to WDV-Enkoping1 (NC_003326), WDV-SE (X02869), WDV-B (AM040732), and WDV-F (AM040733), respectively. Therefore, the virus isolate (WDV-TY) was identified as WDV (genus Mastrevirus, family Geminividae). Wheat samples collected from different provinces from 2004-2006 were also infected with WDV as indicated by PCR using the same primer pairs. For Shijiazhuang (Hebei Province), Yangling (Shanaxi Province), Kunming (Yunnan Province), Yuncheng (Shanxi Province), Tianshui (Gansu Province), Gangu (Gansu Province), and Zhenzhou (Henan Province), 13 of 14, 6 of 6, 5 of 5, 4 of 4, 2 of 3, 1 of 2, and 1 of 1 samples were positive, respectively, indicating a broad distribution of WDV in China. To our knowledge, this is the first report of WDV in wheat in China. Reference: (1) A. Kvarnheden et al. Arch Virol. 147:205, 2002.

Abstract:
This study explores the causal relationship between international tourism receipts and economic growth in China’s eight central provinces (Shanxi, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Henan, Hubei and Hunan) by analyzing these provinces for the period from 1995 to 2014, accounting for both dependency and heterogeneity across provinces. The empirical results of this study support evidence for the growth hypothesis in Hunan Province. A reverse relationship supports evidence on the conservation hypothesis for the provinces, such as Shanxi, Jiangxi, and Henan. A reciprocal causal relationship was found for Jilin, Anhui, and Hubei, while the result of a neutrality hypothesis supported only one of the provinces in Heilongjiang. The empirical findings of this study provide important policy implications for China’s eight central provinces.

Abstract:
Reference crop evapotranspiration (ET0) is a key to estimate crop water requirements, and also an important component of irrigation schedule and water resources planning, sensitivity analysis are crucial in assessing the impact of climate changes inET0estimations. In this study, based on the daily meteorological data of 18 meteorological stations in Shanxi Province from 1961 to 2000, the dailyET0values were calculated using Penman-Monteith equation recommended by FAO-56. The trends of climate variables were detected by using Mann-Kendall test. Sensitivity coefficients were employed to predict responses ofET0to five climatic variables, combined with annual of meteorological factors quantitative analysis ofET0changes. The results show that statistically significant decreasing trends are observed in wind and daily sunshine hours in Guanzhong and southern Shaanxi. Relative humidity has a significant decreasing trend in northern Shaanxi. In general,ET0value is on the decline; relative humidity is the most sensitive variable, followed by solar radiation, daily sunshine hour, wind speed and mean temperature. The change ofET0is primarily attributed to the significantly decreasing in wind speed and sunshine hour.

Abstract:
Coal resource is the main primary energy in our country, while Shanxi Province is the most important province in resource. Therefore Shanxi is an energy base for our country and has a great significance in energy strategy. However because of the heavy development of the coal resource, the ecological environment is worsening and the farmland is reducing continuously in Shanxi Province. How to resolve the contradiction between coal resource exploitation and environmental protection has become the imperative. Thus the concept of “green mining industry” is arousing more and more attention. In this assay, we will talk about the basic mode of land reclamation in mine area, the engineering study of mine land reclamation, the comprehensive model study of mine land reclamation, and the design and model of ecological agricultural reclamation in mining subsidence.

Abstract:
Environmental issues caused by energy consumption have attracted increasing attention recently. Shanxi Province, a typical energy-dominated region in China, has long-term dependency on coal industry generating extensive economic growth, which is detrimental to green development. Distinguished from previous studies ignoring driving factors of energy consumption, this paper establishes a vector autoregression (VAR) model to dynamically identify the drivers of energy consumption based on STIRPAT model in Shanxi Province from 1990 to 2015. It can be obtained from the impulse response analysis that a positive shock in population, GDP, and urbanization level, respectively, positively affect energy consumption, and a positive change in technology negatively affects energy consumption in the long run. The variance decomposition results indicate that fluctuation in energy consumption explained by the innovation of the urbanization level accounts for 23.18%, which plays a prevailing role in increasing energy consumption. Meanwhile, the forecasting results of GM (1,1) model manifest that energy consumption in Shanxi Province generally has an increasing trend from 2016 to 2025. Consequently, Shanxi can achieve green development through optimizing energy structure, promoting the transformation of resource-based cities, and promoting low-carbon technological innovation. This paper can be available for other resource-based regions analogous to Shanxi.

Abstract:
Considering its clean and environmental characteristics, natural gas has gradually attracted attention from countries around the world. China’s coal-to-gas project has significantly increased the country’s demand for, and supply of, natural gas. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) has also been gradually promoted, owing to its advantages of easy storage and transportation. However, the natural gas liquefaction process includes multiple phases, and each phase generates substantial industrial pollutants, such as CO2, SO2, and NOx. Despite this, the resulting environmental impacts have not been quantitatively assessed. Therefore, based on the production process of a liquefaction plant in the Shanxi Province, China, in this study, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) model was used to analyze the pollutant discharge in the unit’s natural gas liquefaction production process. By collecting data on the production capacity and composition reports of the eight major LNG-producing provinces, such as Henan, Sichuan, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Xinjiang, Shanxi, Ningxia, and Hebei, the total amount of pollutants discharged from the natural gas liquefaction process in China was estimated. Finally, the environmental impact of the natural gas liquefaction process was evaluated according to the results of the environmental impact of pollutants. Our study arrived at the following conclusions: (i) 93.60% of China’s natural gas liquefaction output is concentrated in eight provinces; (ii) in terms of the unit’s LNG production, the Global Warming Potential (GWP), Acidification Potential (AP), Eutrophication Potential (EP), Photochemical Ozone Creation Potential (POCP) and Dust Potential (DP) proportions of each province explained the gas composition of LNG production gas sources in each province; (iii) the environmental problems caused by natural gas liquefaction were different in each provinces. In addition, we suggested relevant policy recommendations. First, the formulation of LNG-related policies should consider environmental pollution produced during the liquefaction stage. Second, if the problem of pollutant discharge in the liquefaction of natural gas is properly solved, it will not only reduce environmental pollution, but also generate additional income. Third, different provinces should optimize production technology based on the different gas qualities.

Abstract:
To launch the nationwide emission trading scheme, some provinces in China were approved to design their pilot work for emission trading scheme according to local circumstances. Shanxi Province is the only pilot area with provincial trading market for industrial soot and dust emissions. This paper investigates the effect of Shanxi Pilot emission trading scheme on industrial soot and dust emissions by using the synthetic control method. The idea behind the synthetic control approach is to construct a combination of comparison cities to approximate the emission paths that the cities in Shanxi would have experienced in the absence of the pilot emission trading scheme. We demonstrate that, following Shanxi Pilot emission trading scheme, industrial soot and dust emissions fell markedly in Taiyuan, Datong, and Linfen relative to the synthetic counterparts. The finding that emission trading scheme can help achieve emission reduction targets is shown to be robust to the reduction in the number of control units, placebo tests, and difference-in-differences estimation.

Abstract:
Based on data from 2007 input-output tables for each province, we estimated the energy embodied in China’s interprovincial trade through input-output analysis. The results show that a sizable transfer of energy is embodied in China’s interprovincial trade, and the transfer goes from the central and western provinces, which have higher energy endowments, to the eastern and coastal provinces, which have more developed economies. The provinces with the greatest net inflow of embodied energy via interprovincial trade were Zhejiang, Guangdong, Beijing, Shandong, and Jiangsu. The provinces with the greatest net outflow of embodied energy were Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Xinjiang, and Heilongjiang. To effectively reduce China’s energy consumption, it is vital to adhere not only to the producer responsibility principle but also to the consumer responsibility principle. In particular, the economically developed provinces with substantial net inflows of embodied energy in interprovincial trade should provide support to the provinces from which the embodied energy outflows come.

Abstract:
Oak forest is one of the most crucial zonal forests in Shanxi Province, China. A precise estimation of its carbon sequestration is of great value to the construction of regional carbon budgets. In this study, field measurement data from 47 oak forest stands and the 8th forest inventory data of Shanxi Province have been collected. Using the field measurement data, the relationship between stand volume and biomass is established with an accuracy test. By applying the relationship and a specific carbon concentration coefficient to the forest inventory data, the carbon sequestration of oak forests in Shanxi Province is estimated. The results show that the total carbon sequestration of the local oak forests is 16.19 × 106 t. Among the forests in different age classes, the mid-aged and premature forests are acting as the major carbon sink, with their carbon sequestration accounting for 28.2% and 44.2% of the total amount respectively.

Abstract:
Background Laryngeal cancer is a common malignancy of the head and neck, especially in northern China, including Shanxi province. This study intends to describe the epidemiological characteristics of laryngeal cancer in Shanxi Province, China, in order to support prevention and treatment efforts. Methods Retrospective analysis of the medical records of patients diagnosed with laryngeal cancer in hospitals in Shanxi Province from 2008 to 2012. Results The average annual incidence rate of laryngeal cancer in Shanxi province from 2008 to 2012 was 0.70/105, the Chinese population standardized incidence rate was 0.57/105 and the world population standardized incidence rate was 0.60/105. The city with the highest incidence of laryngeal cancer in Shanxi Province is Taiyuan, followed by Yangquan, and the lowest incidence are Yuncheng and Jincheng. The cases included 723 farmers (58.6%), 338 workers (27.4%), 95 government cadres (7.7%), 35 unemployed individuals (2.8%), 30 teachers (2.4%) and 13 individuals with other occupations (1.1%). The incidence of laryngeal cancer in rural areas was 0.78/105, while urban areas was 0.60/105. Of 1006 patients with smoking and drinking status reported, there were 238 both smoking and drinking (23.7%), 491 only smoking but not drinking (48.8%), 4 only drinking but not smoking (0.4%), 273 both not smoking and not drinking (27.1%) (P<0.001), and there were 695 males smoking (95.3%), 34 females smoking (4.7%) (P<0.001). Of 879 patients for whom the primary cancer location was known, 406 cases (46.2%) were supraglottic and 428 cases (48.7%) were glottic. Among 1009 patients with known pathological classification, the vast majority had squamous cell carcinoma (992 cases, 98.3%). Conclusions To sum up, the incidence of laryngeal cancer in Shanxi Province exhibited a relatively stable trend from 2008 to 2012, and the incidence is higher in men than in women in all years. The high percentage of smokers in this study underscores the importance of smoking as a risk factor for laryngeal cancer, whereas rates of drinking did not appear to be linked. Incidence of laryngeal cancer was higher in rural areas than in urban areas, a pattern that differs from other regions of China and internationally.

Abstract:
With the imminent need of regional environmental protection and sustainable economic development, the concept of virtual water is widely used to solve the problem of regional water shortage. In this paper, nine provinces, namely Qinghai, Sichuan, Gansu, Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Henan, and Shandong in the Yellow River Basin (YRB), are taken as the research objects. Through the analysis of input-output tables of 30 provinces in China in 2012, the characteristics of virtual water trade in this region are estimated by using a multi-regional input-output (MRIO) model. The results show that: (1) The YRB had a net inflow of 17.387 billion m³ of virtual water in 2012. In interprovincial trade, other provinces outside the basin export 21.721 billion m³ of virtual water into the basin. In international trade, the basin exports 4334 million m³ of virtual water to the international market. (2) There are different virtual flow paths in the basin. Shanxi net inputs virtual water by interprovincial trade and international trade, while Gansu and Ningxia net output virtual water by interprovincial trade and international trade. The other six provinces all net output virtual water through international trade, and obtain the net input of virtual water from other provinces outside the basin. (3) From the industrial structure of the provinces in the basin, the provinces with a relatively developed economy, such as Shandong and Shanxi, mostly import virtual water in the agricultural sector, while relatively developing provinces, such as Gansu and Ningxia, mostly import virtual water in the industrial sector. In order to sustain the overall high-quality development of the YRB, we propose the virtual water trade method to quantify the net flow of virtual water in each province and suggest the compensation responsibility of the virtual water net inflow area, and the compensation need of the virtual water net outflow area, in order to achieve efficient water resources utilization.
