Abstract:
This work presents an approach to render appropriate shadows with Image Based Lighting in Augmented Reality applications. To approximate the result of environment lighting and shadowing, the system uses a dome of shadow casting light sources. The color of each shadow is determined by the area of the environment behind the casting light source. As a result it is possible that changes in the lighting conditions immidiately affect the shadow casting of virtual objects on real objects

Abstract:
Analysis of aerial images provided by satellites enables continuous monitoring and is a central component of many applications, including precision farming. Nonetheless, this analysis is often impeded by the presence of clouds and cloud shadows, which obscure the underlying region of interest and introduce incorrect values that bias analysis. In this paper, we outline a method for cloud shadow detection, and demonstrate our method using Canadian farmland data obtained from the Sentinel-2 satellite. Our approach builds on other object-based cloud and cloud shadow detection methods that generate preliminary shadow candidate masks which are refined by matching clouds to their respective shadows. We improve on these components by using ray-casting and inverse texture mapping methods to quickly identify cloud shadows, allowing for the immediate removal of false positives during image processing. Leveraging our ray-casting-based approach, we further improve our results by implementing a probability analysis based on the cloud probability layer provided by the Sentinel-2 satellite to account for missed shadow pixels. An evaluation of our method using the average producer (82.82%) and user accuracy (75.55%) both show a marked improvement over the performance of other object-based methods. Methodologically, our work demonstrates how incorporating probability analysis as a post-processing step can improve the generation of shadow masks.

Abstract:
In this study of the informativeness of shadows for the perception of object shape, observers viewed shadows cast by a set of natural solid objects and were required to discriminate between them. In some conditions the objects underwent rotation in depth while in other conditions they remained stationary, thus producing both deforming and static shadows. The orientation of the light source casting the shadows was also varied, leading to further alterations in the shape of the shadows. When deformations in the shadow boundary were present, the observers were able to reliably recognize and discriminate between the objects, invariant over the shadow distortions produced by movements of the light source. The recognition performance for the static shadows depended critically upon the content of the specific views that were shown. These results support the idea that there are invariant features of shadow boundaries that permit the recognition of shape (cf Koenderink, 1984 Perception13 321–330).

Green, Heather F. "Casting no shadow : overlapping soilscapes of European-Indigenous interaction in northern Sweden." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/13133.

Full text
Abstract:
The Sámi’s past activities have been documented historically from a European perspective, and more recently from an anthropological viewpoint, giving a generalised observation of the Sámi, during the study period of AD200-AD1800, as semi-nomadic hunter gatherers, with several theories suggesting that interaction with Europeans, through trade, led to the adoption of European activities by certain groups of the Sámi (Eiermann, 1923; Paine, 1957; Manker and Vorren, 1962; Bratrein, 1981; Mathiesen et al, 1981; Meriot, 1984). However, there is almost no information on the impact the Sámi had on the landscape, either before or after any adoption of European activities, and none investigating what cultural footprint or indicators would remain from Sámi or European occupation and/or activity within the typically podzolic soils of Northern Sweden. Consequently the thesis aims to contribute to the gap in knowledge through the formation of a podzol model identifying the links between anthropogenic activity and the alteration of podzol soils, and through the creation of soils based models which identify the cultural indicators associated with both Sámi and European activity; formed from the identification of cultural indicators retained within known Sámi and European sites. The methods used to obtain the information needed to achieve this were the pH and magnetic susceptibility from bulk soil samples and micromorphological and chemical analysis of thin section slides through the use of standard microscopy and X-ray fluorescence from a scanning electron microscope. The analysis revealed that the Sámi had an extremely low impact on the landscape, leaving hard to detect cultural indicators related to reindeer herding in the form of reindeer faecal material with corresponding phosphorous peaks in the thin section slides. The European footprint however, was markedly different and very visible even within the acidic soil environment. The European indicators were cultivation based and included phosphorous and aluminium peaks as well as a deepened, highly homogenised plaggen style anthropogenic topsoil rich in ‘added’ materials. An abandoned European site which visibly and chemically shows the formation of a secondary albic horizon within the anthropogenic topsoil also provides an insight into the delicate balance of cultivated soil in northern Sweden, whilst reinforcing the outputs identified in the podzol model. Due to the almost invisible Sámi footprint on the landscape, areas of overlap were impossible to identify however, there was no evidence of the adoption of European cultivation activities at any of the Sámi sites investigated. The only known area of interaction between the two cultures was an official market place which had been a Sámi winter settlement prior to its use as a market site. This site showed none of the reindeer based Sámi indicators or the cultivation based European indicators, but did contain pottery fragments which could be linked to trade or occupation. Overall, the thesis reinforces the low impact expected of the semi-nomadic Sámi and sheds light on the underlying podzolic processes influencing the anthropogenically modified soils of Northern Sweden. The podzol model is reinforced by several findings throughout the thesis and the soils based cultural indicator models for both Sámi and European activity have been successfully tested against independent entomological and palynological data and therefore provide reliable reference material for future studies.

Trigg, Tina. "Casting shadows: A study of madness in Margaret Atwood's novels." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/29039.

Full text
Abstract:
Madness is a recurrent aspect of Margaret Atwood's novels to date and represents perhaps her most discomforting challenge to the reader who is implicated as co-creator, interpreter, and participant of the fiction. Her novels question the binary of normality and madness by situating madness both in the margins and foreground, thereby exposing "normality" as a tendentious construct designed to obscure contemporary Western society's psychic imbalance caused by fear of the unknown within the self. This dissertation employs a psycho-social method of investigating madness with a concurrent assessment of reader-involvement strategies, mediated through a theoretical framework based on C. G. Jung, R. D. Laing, and Wolfgang Iser. The particular areas of investigation include: Atwood's comical representation of psychology as a prominent undercurrent of popular culture in The Edible Woman, and her contrasting serious---even threatening---portrayal of normative limits as social constructs in Bodily Harm. With regard to the individual, Lady Oracle exhibits the role of fantasy in psychic balance and posits the protagonist as an unlikely manifestation of "normality." Although still focused on the individual, Life Before Man represents the converse: the capacity for fantasy is lost in the dissociated condition of "normalized" characters. The Jungian process of individuation is studied through the projection of one's shadow figure in The Robber Bride. Finally, Atwood's most direct and strategic implication of the reader in determining the variable boundaries of (in)sanity is examined in Alias Grace. Ultimately, Atwood's presentation of madness insists on the reader's involvement and situates her/him in a position of potential self-recognition.

Abstract:
Self determination has been recognised as a basic human right both internationally and, to an extent, locally, but it is yet to be fully realised for Aboriginal Peoples in Australia. The assertion of Aboriginal community control in Aboriginal health has been at the forefront of Aboriginal peoples' advocacy for self determination for more than thirty years. Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services and their representative organisations have been the site of considerable resistance and contestation in the struggles involved in trying to improve Aboriginal health experiences. Drawing on some of these experiences I explore the apparent inability of policy and decision makers to listen to systematic voices calling for change from the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health sector. It is government inability to act more fully on clear and repeated messages that is a source of much disquiet within representative Aboriginal organisations. Such disquiet is grounded in a belief that colonial notions continue to influence decision making at policy, practice and research levels resulting in a significant impediment to the realisation of self determination and associated human rights in Aboriginal health matters and Aboriginal Affairs more broadly.

Shivananju, B. N. "Advanced Multifunctional Bulk Optical & Fiber Bragg Grating Sensing Techniques." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2005/2611.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis work, a systematic quantitative study has been undertaken, on the performance of etched fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors in the investigation of surface molecular adsorption in real-time; it is shown that the limit of detection (LOD) of FBGs etched below 2 microns diameter, is better compared to prominent optical label-free molecular sensing techniques such as Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR). Novel fiber optic sensors based on FBG and etched FBG with various nano materials (polyelectrolytes, carbon nanotubes, hydrogel, metals and chalcogenides) coated on the surface of the core or cladding, have been proposed for sensing multi parameters such as pH, protein, humidity, gas, strain, temperature, and light etc. Besides being reproducible and repeatable, the proposed methods are fast, compact, and highly sensitive. A novel optical instrument has also been developed to measure angular deviation, binocular deviation and refractive index of glass slabs, and liquids, based on a shadow casting technique. This method uses the deviation in the geometrical shadow cast by a periodic dot pattern trans-illuminated by a distorted light beam from the transparent test specimen relative to a reference pattern.

AbstractThe unique diversity of the world’s highest flora and fauna is a sacred landscape for the resident Sherpa communities, but climate change has been casting a threatening shadow over World Heritage Sagarmatha (Mt Everest) National Park (SNP) for years, causing rapid and pronounced impacts. Tourism is a key driver to the local economy but is exacerbating the impacts of climate change. Through extensive community and individual surveys in major villages, combined with a wealth of data from other studies, we focus on how the impacts of climate change and tourism development can be countered by measures at the local level. We identified two sources of conflict that need to be addressed: (1) conflict between tourism businesses and park management and (2) a lack of awareness of the need for an overarching conservation strategy among residents and stakeholders. To solve these issues, site management needs considerable enforcement and support from the State Party.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the age of globalization when people around the world must work together to deal with common challenges, global histories with the intention to create “global citizens” are essential. Therefore, reviewing the “new historiography” advocated by Liang Qichao and creating a “neo-new historiography” that is compatible with the age of globalization and can contribute to “reconciliation studies” and the sustainable global partnership should not be a task for China alone. The goal of no. SDGs17 is to “activate the global partnership toward sustainable development.” However, in East Asia, to establish such a partnership and make it work, it is necessary to build trust as a precondition. To build trust in this region, “history” must be overcome. However, the history of perpetration and victimization has been politicized, casting a shadow on the trust between nations and their peoples. This chapter aims to propose methods to build the global partnership by seeking solutions to the “history problem” that extends outside the realm of “historiography.”

Abstract:
An efficient optical computing system may involve the use of a programmable logic array (PLA) where only on outputs are stored in locations addressable by the inputs. The lensless optical shadow-casting (OSC) system1 using LEDs provides an easier and reliable means to generate logic operations. This scheme has been recently extended2,3 to include polarized sources, masks, and encoding codes, thus increasing the design flexibility. In an OSC, each LED produces a shadow of the input overlap pattern, which along with the other similarly produced shadows give an output overlap pattern which is subsequently decoded by means of decoding masks. The original1 and polarization-encoded2,3 optical shadow-casting systems explored so far are designed to generate only one output at a time. We report the design of a polarization-encoded PLA device where multiple outputs are generated simultaneously for all the input pixels without switching either LEDs or mask. The proposed algorithm is thereafter employed to design an optimal multiple-output binary multiplication unit.

Abstract:
A polarization-encoded optical shadow-casting (POSC) system1 exploits the parallelism of optics to process 2-D coded input data in parallel. Previously, a multiplier2 was designed capable of generating four output bits in parallel; however, each input required 9-pixel subcells for encoding. In the current work, the previous design is optimized using minterm pairing and associative sharing of minterm pairs1 among different output bits. The resulting size of the pixel then becomes 6. The design process exemplifies how in a systematic way one can design a highly optimized POSC computing module. All multiplier outputs are generated and detected in parallel. The resulting coding of the inputs and the space variant output decoding mask to detect the outputs in parallel are provided.
