Abstract:
This paper aims to explore Mary Ann Shadd’s transgression of race, gender, and class boundaries by employing a close reading of the text, A Plea for Emigration. I will explore the triangular relationship between race, class, and gender seen in the text from intersectional feminist perspectives. My contention is that, through her activism by pen, especially in A Plea for Emigration, Shadd exposes the feminist voice that enables her to protest against racism, slavery, gender stratification, and marginalization based on class hierarchy. In other words, I claim that Shadd’s transgression of the borders of race, gender, and class lies in her activism and ideology as a woman, black, and marginalized. This paper will, therefore, show that Mary Ann Shadd strongly transgresses the borders of race, gender, and class as the first black woman who owned and edited a newspaper, inspired American blacks towards freedom, confronted her contemporary male leaders, exposed the female gaze during a period of history when the male gaze was predominant and authoritative, became a public speaker making the world listen to her while working with the so-called socially aesthetic people despite being a “negro”.

Le terme persan de javānmardi (fotovvat en arabe) signifiant "jeunesse", renvoie à une forme de chevalerie spirituelle dominée par les notions de servitude et de fidélité au serment prononcé. L'éthique de fotovvat pénètre l'idéologie soufie vers le IVe/Xᵉ s.-VIe/XIIᵉ s.. Le javānmard (fatā), « compagnon-chevalier », devient celui qui, par ses actes, réaffirme le pacte préexistentiel scellé entre Dieu et Sa créature. Des groupes initiatiques, se revendiquant de cette éthique, liés au taṣavvof, s'institutionnalisent dès le VIIe/XIIIe s.. À la période post-mongole, dans le milieu des artisans et commerçants, des mouvements suivant la voie de fotovvat se développent. Fraternité, générosité et bonté sont parmi les qualités recherchées par ces « Amis de Dieu » dont le "père" est Abraham et 'Ali b. Abi Ṭāleb, l'archétype du Parfait Chevalier. Ce travail propose, dans une première partie, une étude a de la Fotovvat, de ses mouvements multiples et complexes, et de leur continuité. La traduction annotée de sources en persan sur la fotovvat, constitue la deuxième partie de ce travail. Elle concerne le chapitre sur le javānmardi du Qābus Nāme (Ve/XIe s.), certains des principaux traités de fotovvat rédigés par des maîtres soufis, entre les VIIe/XIIIe s. et IXe/XVe s., ainsi que des traités de fotovvat dits de métier. Ces derniers, pour majorité datant du le Xe/XVIe s. et XIIe/XVIIIe s., d'une toute autre facture, pour partie liés aux dervishes qalandars, nous éclairent sur la transmission, parfois intacte, dans le milieu du bazar iranien, des valeurs et de rituels de fotovvat que l'on retrouve encore au XIIIe/XIXe s. Nous découvrons, au décours de cette étude, une littérature populaire originale<br>The Persian term javānmardi (fotovvat in Arabic) meaning "youth", refers to a form of spiritual chivalry dominated by the notions of servitude and fidelity to the oath taken. The ethics of fotovvat penetrated Sufi ideology around the 5th/11th century - IVth/Xth-VIth/XIIth century. The javānmard (fatā), "companion-knight", becomes the one who, through his actions, reaffirms the pre-existential pact sealed between God and His creature. Initiatory groups, claiming this ethic, linked to taṣavvof, became institutionalized from the VIIth/XIIIth century. In the post-Mongol period, among artisans and traders, movements following the path of fotovvat developed. Fraternity, generosity and kindness are among the qualities sought by these “Friends of God” whose “father” is Abraham and 'Ali b. Abi Ṭāleb, the archetype of the Perfect Knight. This work offers, in the first part, a study of fotovvat, its multiple and complex movements, and their continuity. The annotated translation of Persian sources on fotovvat constitutes the second part of this work. It includes the chapter on javānmardi from the Qābus Nāme (Vth/XIthcentury), some of the main fotovvat treatises written by Sufi masters, between the VIIth/XIIIth century and the IXth/XVth century, as well as so-called professional fotovvat treatises. The latter, the majority dating from the Xth/XVIth century and XIIth/XVIIIth centuries, a completely different style, partly linked to the Qalandar dervishes, high light on the transmission, sometimes intact, in the environment of the Iranian bazaar, of the values and rituals of fotovvat, which we still find in the XIIIth/XIXth century. We discover, during this study, an original popular literature.]

L’histoire des noirs au Canada cache une variété de récits omis et oubliés. Cette thèse se concentre sur un segment de l’histoire du Chemin de fer clandestin, particulièrement durant la période 1850-1865, ainsi que sur la pensée et l’action politiques d’une figure négligée de l’époque, Mary Ann Shadd. Cette femme noire, journaliste, rédactrice en chef et militante pour les droits des noirs publie en 1852 A Plea for Emigration, une brochure politique très éclairante sur les conditions de vie et la situation des noirs au Canada. Au cœur de la recherche d’un refuge pour les noirs des États-Unis après le passage du Fugitive Act en 1850, Shadd pose des actes politiques marquants pour son époque. Sa brochure, sa migration vers le Canada et sa militance ont une signification symbolique et théorique qui soulève la question suivante: Quelle réinterprétation de la citoyenneté canadienne pouvons-nous faire à la lumière de l’exemple de Mary Ann Shadd? À l’aide de la négritude féministe canadienne, une perspective inspirée du black feminism, des cultural studies et de la négritude, il est possible de mettre l’accent sur les expériences plutôt que sur l’histoire dominante et d’analyser la relation complexe entre la race-classe-genre, l’idéologie libérale classique, la production du savoir et la citoyenneté. La méthode est interprétative et l’hypothèse est la suivante : bien que Mary Ann Shadd soit omise de l’histoire du Canada et bien qu’elle fasse usage des paramètres conventionnels de la citoyenneté libérale classique du XIXe siècle dans A Plea, elle redéfinit la citoyenneté canadienne comme expérience à travers ses écrits et ses actes politiques et incarne une féminité politique noire qui produit un récit exemplaire. Le concept de citoyenneté est utilisé pour mettre en évidence les limites de l’idéologie libérale classique et sert de pivot pour imaginer d’autres formes d’appartenance, de participation politique et de mémoire au Canada. D’abord, le chapitre 1 présente la revue de la littérature et le cadre théorique et méthodologique de la thèse. Vues de la perspective féministe et critique évoquée précédemment, les très nombreuses et importantes omissions des noirs dans l’histoire du Canada sont problématisées par la présence de la féminité politique noire dont Shadd est un exemple. L’omission a comme résultat un profond malaise de la mémoire des noirs auquel Shadd répond par un contre-récit. Ensuite, le chapitre 2 se concentre davantage sur l’omission des femmes noires par rapport à la citoyenneté à travers les critères d’appartenance comme marqueurs de présence dans la mémoire collective. Ce chapitre dévoile les limites de la citoyenneté liée à une « identité fixe » et explore le paradoxe de Shadd qui rend plus complexe la discussion sur la citoyenneté. Enfin, le chapitre 3 explore l’idée de la citoyenneté comme une expérience, proposant ainsi une extension des représentations possibles de la citoyenneté. Ce chapitre examine le militantisme et les écrits de Mary Ann Shadd, dont son plaidoyer A Plea for Emigration et son rôle en tant que rédactrice en chef de son journal The Provincial Freeman, comme actes politiques. Le récit de ses actions politiques constitue un exemple d’une citoyenneté transgressive et d’une contribution à la mémoire collective susceptible de favoriser la guérison et l’émancipation de la mémoire des noirs au Canada.

Abstract:
There are no previous studies validating the accuracy and repeatability of ClearMatch photographic shade analysis system. The purpose of this study was to compare the shade matches performed by a photographic shade analysis system (ClearMatch) with conventional visual shade matching method under simulated clinical conditions. Three shade matching methods were used to match twelve shade tabs under simulated clinical conditions using a Vita Classical shade guide: conventional visual shade matching using 3 human raters (VM – Visual method), photographic shade analysis system (CM - ClearMatch) using two different ways of normalizing the image (CM-A2 and CM-ref respectively). Shade matching for all methods was completed at two separate sessions. The Kappa statistic was used to determine the intra-rater and inter-rater agreement. CIELAB values of the shade results were used to produce scatter plots as well as to calculate the color difference (delta E) between VM and CM groups. There was no inter-rater agreement between VM and CM-A2 (k=0.000 and k=0.015 for the first and second sessions respectively) while VM and CM-ref showed weak agreement (k=0.244 and k=0.091 respectively). Intra-rater agreement was strong in all groups VM, CM-A2 and CM-ref (0.705, 0.803 and 0.681 respectively). CM-A2 had 2 (8.3%) shade matches with a delta E of less than 2.6 (clinically imperceptible), while CM-ref had 12 (50.0%) imperceptible matches. CM-A2 had an additional 16 (66.6%) shade matches with delta E of less than 5.5 (clinically acceptable), while CM-ref had 23 (95.8%) additional acceptable matches. There was poor agreement in exact shade matches between conventional visual shade matching method and the photographic shade analysis system. The repeatability of the photographic shade analysis system was shown to be comparable to conventional visual shade matching. Using conventional shade matching as the gold standard, the capability of this photographic shade analysis system to accurately shade match has not been achieved.

Thesis (Masters Diploma (Heavy Current)) -- Cape Technikon, 1991<br>Linear induction motors are built for numerous applications. Their robustness, gearfree-link to the load and the fact that speed is not a function of the number of poles (as in round machines) are only a few advantages. As every single phase motor needs some starting aid, so does a linear induction drive. For round machines, capacitors or shaded poles are usually used. A capacitor can be damaged electrically, which is a rare occurrence for shading rings. A useful combination of these advantages is a linear induction motor which is gearless and uses the shaded pole principle as a starting aid. In order to simplify the designing process, a computer program (Fortran) was written. The main objective on the electrical side was to obtain low input power, high power factor and high efficiency. In order to find the performance curves, torque measurements were made. Although the principles of torque measurements are well known the device to measure torque for this machine was not available and had to be constructed.

AbstractAgroforestry practices in cocoa cultivation have historical roots going back to the Mayan sacred groves in Mesoamerica. Today, agroforestry cocoa, i.e., the integration of shade trees, plants and crops in cocoa systems, is promoted as a climate smart practice by public and private institutions. Shaded cocoa can sustain or even increase cocoa yields and the agroforestry systems may provide additional output for household consumption and sale as well as improve the microclimate and soil conditions on the farm. Despite these promising features, cocoa agroforestry systems are far from the norm in producing countries like Ghana. Based on discussions with groups of farmers across the Ghanaian cocoa belt, this chapter shows that while farmers are well aware of the positive aspects of shaded cocoa systems, traditional cocoa practices, village chiefs’ command of local land uses, land and tree tenure systems, alternative land uses and inability to access inputs and extension services limit the adoption and constrain the management of shade trees. As still more policies are developed to improve the Ghanaian cocoa sector, policymakers must consider these often overlooked social and institutional factors that prevent cocoa farmers from engaging in longer-term agroforestry practices and thereby benefiting from the opportunities they present.

Abstract:
&lt;p&gt;The Shaded Dome&lt;span&gt;patented&lt;/span&gt; is a semi-permanent facility, comprised of an air-supported dome covered by a tensile membrane shade. The two layers are separated by a grid of spacers, through which forces are transferred. In the space between the two layers a constant natural air flow is present, which enables a pleasant internal microclimate. This passive design element provides protection from extreme climatological conditions like solar radiation, wind, high air temperature, humidity and precipitation. The concept provides a design challenge concerning the force balance between the air-supported dome, as the primary stability structure, and the tensile membrane shade which must remain in shape. The Shaded dome provides a solution for example for temporary events, such as World Cups or the Olympics, to replace the large and expensive venues, which often are abandoned once the event is over.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Shaded Dome Technologies explored the basic principles of an air-supported dome covered by a shade through rigorous experimenting. Parallel to empirical testing in scaled handmade models, a design model was scripted and its behaviour simulated. These two “methods” were not sequential but informed each other. The concept is cast in a computational design model. This computational model is used to simulate the inflation of the air-supported dome, generate the tensile membrane shade on top, study and vary each aspect of the design and optimise and prepare the geometry for manufacturing. The results produced within this computational framework were further explored and validated using finite element method software. This all lead to the construction of a successful prototype.&lt;/p&gt;

In this paper, experiments that can be introduced to Clean Energy Systems classes are described. The experiments investigate the effect of power characteristics (temperature, shade and tilt angle) on solar panel electricity production. Solar cell efficiency is the ratio of the electrical output of a solar cell to the incident energy in the form of sunlight. The energy conversion efficiency of a solar cell is the percentage of the solar energy to which the cell is exposed that is converted into electrical energy. Extreme temperatures can cause a decrease in solar panel’s power output and airstream can dissipate the heat and bring the solar panel to its normal operating condition. Solar panel efficiency is undesirably affected by heat and improved with introducing cooler medium. As well as heat, solar panel loses its power when a part of it is shaded by trees or surrounding buildings. Before solar panel systems are designed for homes, usually a detailed shading analysis of the roof is conducted to reveal its patterns of shade and sunlight throughout the year. By the same manner, how solar panels react to the direct and indirect rays from the sun in order to produce electricity is examined through experiments. Voltage, current and power flowing into a resistor are measured when the angle of the solar panel relative to the light source is changed. The tilt angles to the electrical measurements are linked to the differences in electrical generation. Students can perform experimental procedures explained here and gain the conceptual understanding of the Solar Energy better. The investigations require student explanation of the question, method, display of data with the critical response from peers.

Abstract:
This paper presents the effect of the shade of a tree on the indoor temperature and thermal loads of a house (test house) located in the State of Morelos, Mexico, 18° 50′ 43″ north latitude and 99° 10′ 44″ west longitude. Energy Plus was used to simulate different geometries of the shadow of a tree and the simulation results were compared with experimental measurements of the house without air-conditioning, for one warm and one cold week of the year 2011. The results showed that the maximum temperature difference between the measured and simulated temperatures with both geometry models of tree-shading was 1.7°C. When the effect of tree shading is not considered, it was found that there is a maximum temperature increase of 4°C in the warm week compared with the measured results. In the cold week, the temperature increase was 1.3°C compared with the measured results. Simulation results for an air-conditioned tree-shaded test house show that total annual energy consumption for cooling and heating to achieve thermal comfort represents a substantial energy savings of 76.6% when compared with an unshaded house.

Thesealgorithms are applied to the CEC2013 benchmark set with 100dimensions, and it’s shown that A-SHADE and EB-A-SHADE canachieve competitive results.

Australia has one of the highest skin cancer incidences globally. Quality shade, which is a well-designed and correctly positioned combination of natural and built shade, can reduce solar ultraviolet radiation exposure by up to 75%. Existing shade in playgrounds in NSW was benchmarked in 2020-2021; this demonstrated a clear need for improvements to be made. This realist review sought to find evidence of shade targets and other complex strategies to increase shade in playgrounds. Fifty-nine documents (31 peer reviewed and 28 grey literature) contributed data to address the evidence review questions. Twenty-five examples of strategies, with a description of their implementation and/or reporting of outcomes, used to increase shade in playgrounds were located. Six types of strategies were identified: policies, guidelines and recommendations; settings-based site audits and site plans; city-level tree and shade site masterplan; monetary incentives; targets and other metrics; and multi-component interventions. For the strategies themselves, the review found evidence of intermediate changes such as the adoption of the strategy, but a lack of evidence of strategies leading to increased shade in playgrounds. Five enablers, five barriers and one barrier/enabler to the implementation of strategies to increase shade in playground were found in the literature. Expert opinion from reviews suggests that shade provision for skin cancer prevention is best affected through integration with other policies.
