Abstract:
Although the port industry is very important in the Korean economy, there are few literature studies that shed light on the macroeconomic implications of the business cycles in this industry. This paper examines the roles played by foreign economic factors in the business cycle in the Korean port industry. Specifically, it aims to estimate the impulse response of the seaborne freight volume in the port industry due to the shocks of the foreign economy and analyze the contributions of each shock considered on the variation in the freight volume. The structural FAVAR (SFAVAR) model was employed to extract the unobserved foreign economic factors. This paper estimates the four foreign economic factors and the parameters of the model using the one-step Bayesian Gibbs sampling method. The findings of this study show that foreign economic activity statistically affects the freight volume of the Korean ports. Specifically, the shocks to the foreign real economic activity increased freight transportation for nearly one year. Following the world inflation shocks, the freight transportation was enhanced. However, this impact disappeared after a year. Similarly, the rise in global liquidity was shown to encourage transportation activity; nevertheless, this activity declined after five quarters. Moreover, the increase in the world interest rates exerted a negative effect on the volume of transportation. Furthermore, the variance decomposition analysis shows that 49.2% of the variation in the transportation volume could be attributed to foreign economic activity. This analysis can contribute to drawing useful implications in establishing the port industry policy in response to the change in the economic environment such as the foreign economy.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Among the virulence factors present in pathogenic extraintestinal Escherichia coli strains, expression of fimbrial adhesins is necessary for attachment to the host tissues and subsequent colonization. Occurrence of the sfa determinant coding for the S fimbriae is widespread among the uropathogens and meningitis isolates. The sfa operon consists of nine genes. In the biogenesis of S fimbriae, the proteins encoded by the sfa genes are presumably required in a specific stoichiometry. In the present work we studied how differential expression of the sfa operon genes occurs. Our findings indicate that a number of endoribonucleolytic cleavages occur in the mRNA from the sfa operon, and we detected the presence of different distinct transcriptional products, including sfaBA, sfaA, sfaADE, and sfaGSH. The sfaGSH transcript represents the three distal genes of the sfa operon, which code for the minor subunits of the S fimbriae. Analysis of the proteins in S fimbriae suggested that expression of the sfaGSH transcript provides equimolar amounts of the minor subunits. Furthermore, we showed that in the generation of the major sfaA transcript, the processing included RNase E endoribonuceolytic cleavage of the precursor sfaBA transcript. We suggest that posttranscriptional mRNA processing events result in differential gene expression important to achieve the stoichiometry necessary for fimbrial adhesin biogenesis.

Abstract:
Abstract We showed previously that two genes, flbA and fadA, have a major role in determining the balance between growth, sporulation, and mycotoxin (sterigmatocystin; ST) production by the filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans. fadA encodes the α subunit for a heterotrimeric G-protein, and continuous activation of FadA blocks sporulation and ST production while stimulating growth. flbA encodes an A. nidulans regulator of G-protein signaling (RGS) domain protein that antagonizes FadA-mediated signaling to allow development. To better understand FlbA function and other aspects of FadA-mediated growth control, we have isolated and characterized mutations in four previously undefined genes designated as sfaA, sfaC, sfaD, and sfaE (suppressors of flbA), and a new allele of fadA (fadAR205H), all of which suppress a flbA loss-of-function mutation (flbA98). These suppressors overcome flbA losses of function in both sporulation and ST biosynthesis. fadAR205H, sfaC67, sfaD82, and sfaE83 mutations are dominant to wild type whereas sfaA1 is semidominant. sfaA1 also differs from other suppressor mutations in that it cannot suppress a flbA deletion mutation (and is therefore allele specific) whereas all the dominant suppressors can bypass complete loss of flbA. Only sfaE83 suppressed dominant activating mutations in fadA, indicating that sfaE may have a unique role in fadA-flbA interactions. Finally, none of these suppressor mutations bypassed fluG loss-of-function mutations in development-specific activation.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We recently identified 21 structural proteins in the virion of Spodoptera frugiperda ascovirus 1a (SfAV1a), a virus with a large, double-stranded DNA genome of 157 kbp, which attacks species of the lepidopteran family Noctuidae. The two most abundant virion proteins were the major capsid protein and a novel protein (P64) of 64 kDa that contained two distinct domains not known previously to occur together. The amino-terminal half of P64 (residues 1 to 263) contained four repeats (a recently recognized motif with an unknown function) of a virus-specific two-cysteine adaptor. Adjoined to this, the carboxy-terminal half of P64 (residues 279 to 455) contained 14 copies of a highly basic, tandemly repeated motif rich in arginine and serine, having an 11- to 13-amino-acid consensus sequence, SPSQRRSTS(V/K)(A/S)RR, yielding a predicted isoelectric point of 12.2 for this protein. In the present study, we demonstrate by Southwestern analysis that SfAV1a P64 was the only virion structural protein that bound DNA. Additional electrophoretic mobility shift assays showed that P64 bound SfAV1a as well as non-SfAV1a DNA. Furthermore, we show through immunogold labeling of ultrathin sections that P64 is a component of virogenic stroma and appears to be progressively incorporated into the SfAV1a DNA core during virion assembly. As no other virion structural protein bound DNA and no basic DNA-binding proteins of lower mass are encoded by the SfAV1a genome or were identified by proteomic analysis, our results suggest that P64's function is to condense the large genome of this virus and assist in packaging this genome into its virion.

Abstract:
In this paper, the Split Feed Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (SFABR) is introduced and investigations into the use of modified seed material are described. It was shown that shorter and reliable start-up times could be achieved with SFABR when using improved seed material, even for the treatment of particularly problematic wastewater, i.e. ice-cream wastewater. Scanning electron photo-micrographs (SEM) revealed that granulation process occurs relatively rapidly in the SFABR compared with other reactor configurations, and that the reactor contained a highly mixed population of methanogens in all compartments. The use of polymer-conditioned anaerobic sludge and granular sludge as seed proved advantageous over the use of suspended growth anaerobic sludge, and the “improved” SFABR consequently performed more efficiently and also showed greater stability than the conventional ABR.

Abstract:
Growing popularity of electronic nicotine-delivery systems (ENDS) has coincided with a need to strengthen tobacco-control policy. In response, the ENDS industry has taken actions to mobilize against public health measures, including coordination on social media platforms. To explore this phenomenon, data mining was used to collect public posts on two Facebook public group pages: the California Consumer Advocates for Smoke Free Alternatives Association (CCASAA) and the community page of the Northern California Chapter of SFATA (NC-SFATA). Posts were manually annotated to characterize themes associated with industry political interference and user interaction. We collected 288 posts from the NC-SFATA and 411 posts from CCASAA. A total of 522 (74.7%) posts were categorized as a form of political interference, with 339 posts (64.9%) from CCASAA and 183 posts (35.1%) from NC-SFATA. We identified three different categories of policy interference-related posts: (1) providing updates on ENDS-related policy at the federal, state, and local levels; (2) sharing opinions about ENDS-related policies; (3) posts related to scientific information related to vaping; and (4) calls to action to mobilize against tobacco/ENDS policies. Our findings indicate that pro-tobacco social media communities on Facebook, driven by strategic activities of trade associations and their members, may act as focal points for anti-policy information dissemination, grass-roots mobilization, and industry coordination that needs further research.

Abstract:
The recently discovered ascoviruses have a worldwide distribution. Here we report a new member of the family Ascoviridae, Spodoptera frugiperda ascovirus 1d (SfAV-1d) with a variable region in the genome. Restriction fragment length polymorphism, Southern hybridization and genome sequencing analyses confirmed that SfAV-1d and the earlier reported SfAV-1a are closely related but are not identical. The genome size of SfAV-1d is approximately 100 kbp, which is about 57 kbp smaller than SfAV-1a. The SfAV-1d genome has a major deletion of 14 kbp that corresponds to one of the inverted repeat (IR) regions of SfAV-1a. Cloning and sequencing revealed that the region flanking the deletion within the SfAV-1d genome is highly variable. In all the variants of this region, the whole IR region is missing, with 88.2 % of the variants missing part of or the whole adjacent SfAV-1a ORF71, 94.1 % missing part of or the whole of adjacent ORF72 and 64.6 % missing part of or the whole of ORF73.

Abstract:
The quality of water resources in Morocco is degraded by pollution from agriculture, industry and urbanization. In this work we have realized a comparative study of two groundwater pollution zones: M’nasra (Kenitra) and Sfafaa (Sidi Slimane). In general, the results of this study showed that most water wells are strongly mineralized as the conductivity far exceeds the standard of drinking water. Sodium chloride (NaCl) concentration is between 33.9 and 1184.6 mg / l and shows some of the wells are loaded with salts. The pH is generally basic in all wells. Pollution by nitrates two regions showed that the ground water is strongly affected M’nasra zone terms of the permeability of the soil of the city. The concentration of nitrate can reach high values compared to the results obtained on the ground water at Sfafaa zone whose nitrate concentrations around 20 mg/l. Further pollution of groundwater in the two regions of the shows values of organic matters that go far beyond the standards of drinking.

Abstract:
The Ascoviridae is a family of large double-stranded (ds) DNA insect viruses that contains four species, the Spodoptera frugiperda (SfAV1), Trichoplusia ni (TnAV2), Heliothis virescens (HvAV3) and Diadromus pulchellus (DpAV4) ascoviruses. These are unique among insect viruses in that the primary means of transmission among their lepidopteran hosts is generally by being vectored mechanically by hymenopteran parasitoids. Ascoviruses are similar in virion structure, but their relationships with their parasitoid vectors vary from being opportunistic to obligate. Little is known, however, about the relatedness of these viruses to one another or to other large dsDNA viruses. We therefore cloned and sequenced the δ DNA polymerase gene of DpAV4, characterized it and compared it to 59 eukaryotic and viral δ and ϵ DNA polymerases. Phylogenetic analyses based on these genes revealed that the ascoviruses DpAV4 and SfAV1 formed a group of virus species distinct from, but closely related to, species of the family Iridoviridae. Detailed analyses of the relatedness of ascovirus species based on conserved δ DNA polymerase motifs showed two groups within the family Ascoviridae, one containing DpAV4 and the other containing SfAV1, TnAV2 and HvAV3, which was consistent with their host–vector relationships. Despite significant differences in capsid symmetry between ascoviruses and iridoviruses, these results suggest that these viruses may have originated from a common ancestral virus.

Abstract:
Abstract: Chapter one The aim of this paper is to examine the role of monetary and fiscal policies in explaining macroeconomic fluctuations in Ethiopia using a structural VAR approach, over the period 1997/1998:1 to 2016/17:4. Its mains results can be presented as follows: first, an increase in government spending has an expansionary effect on output, while an increase in tax revenue has a contractionary effect, with spending multipliers larger than net tax revenue multipliers; second, contractionary monetary policy is associated with a fall in output; third, monetary policy contributes to very small fluctuations in output and it is one of the responsible sources of the high and persistence inflation in the country; fourth, the contributions of fiscal policy shocks are larger than that of monetary policy shocks in explaining movements in output, with roughly equivalent contributions coming from shocks in fiscal policy components. Furthermore, the effects of fiscal and monetary policy shocks on output and inflation have improved qualitatively and quantitatively when both policy variables are jointly examined than estimating a separate model; suggesting the role of a joint analysis of fiscal and monetary policy shocks.
Abstract: Chapter two This paper explores the international spillovers of the U.S, the Euro Area (EA hereafter), Chinese and Japanese monetary policy shocks on a number of macroeconomic variables in 17 Emerging Market Economies (EMEs). After expansionary monetary policy in these four big economies, industrial production increases in typical emerging markets. These results are robust to most countries considered in the analysis over the sample period. The short-term interest rates also fall in the typical emerging markets regardless of where the shock is originated. However, the response of the real trade-weighted exchange rates in the typical emerging market economies is strong and short-lived after monetary expansion in the Euro Area, but persistent after monetary expansion from the U.S, Japan, and China. Moreover, the size of the responses of the industrial production in emerging Europe and Asia respond more to the monetary innovations in the Euro Area and China, respectively. There is also a substantial cross country heterogeneity in the responses of the macroeconomic aggregates in the emerging markets, where the size of the spillovers vary with the country-specific characteristics. Countries with higher trade openness and higher financial integration display stronger spillover in production as compared to other counterparts after the U.S. and the Japanese M3 innovations. Moreover, the degree of debt burden matters for the transmission of the U.S, the Euro Area and Japan monetary policy shocks and does not seem to matter for monetary expansions in China.

Abstract:
This work aims to explore the potential of plant and rhizobacteria for bioremediation in mining soil in Marrakech region. Rhizospheric and nodules strains were isolated from faba bean roots and native plants growing in Draa Sfar and Kettara mining sites. Several isolates showed good tolerance to metals up to 25 mg/l of Cu, 200 mg/l of Pb and 150 mg/l of Zn. The tolerant strains to metals were screened for their PGPR characteristics (production of exopolysaccharides, siderophores, IAA and antifungal activity). In mining soil amended with agricultural soil, faba bean showed an ability to accumulate metals differently. Pb was not very mobile in shoots, and did not reach the seeds. Zn was the most translocated metal to the aerial parts although its amount was important in roots. Cu was accumulated rather in the roots of plants than shoots. Zn and Cu were translocated to seeds but at significantly lower levels. The inoculation with PGPR bacteria allowed Cu to accumulate better in plants, particularly in roots. Whereas the PGPR-rhizobia mixed inoculation improved the absorption of Zn in plants, especially in shoots. In natura investigation of mining sites heavily contaminated with heavy metals (HMs) indicates that microbiota has evolved, becoming tolerant to long-term HMs pollution and adapted to indigenous plants themselves able of tolerating and accumulating HMs

Abstract:
This chapter discusses how two graphic novels—The Rabbi’s Cat by Joann Sfar and Tina’s Mouth: An Existential Diary by KeshniKashyap—illustrate awe, sanctity and ineffability. In exploring how each narrative exposes the sacred, this chapter looks at the interplay between word and image, suggesting multiple, concurrent, and layered definitions of divinity. Each text creates a multi-layered conversation inviting the reader to explore textual/visual accounts of the sacred. This dynamic relationship between visual and written narratives informs how readers integrate words from a type of visual dialogue in order to unpack multiple meanings. That kind of agency suggests a graphic articulation of what Mikhail Bakhtin named heteroglossia (multi-languagedness)—the multiple contemporaneous literary exchanges that operate in different spheres. The heteroglossia of the graphic novel allows the reader to envisage multiple, simultaneous interpretations of the sacred.
