Cette étude s'ancre dans le premier Franquisme (de 1939 à 1956, année de l'abolition officielle de la prostitution en Espagne). Ce fut la recrudescence des maladies vénériennes qui, officiellement, motiva le retour au système réglementariste en 1941. La prostitution féminine avait pour causes principales la misère et le manque de qualification professionnelle. La prostitution ne pouvant aucunement se réduire à une pratique individuelle, il convient, afin d'en comprendre les mécanismes, d'analyser la société dans laquelle elle s'inscrit (condition féminine, tissu économique et politique). L'importance de la prostitution dans les pratiques sexuelles des Espagnols, témoigne d'une misère sexuelle importante. Il convient également de s'interroger sur les motivations réelles du Gouvernement concernant le maintien du système réglementariste aussi tardivement. Sous la pression internationale, et grâce à une campagne menée en Espagne par les instances catholiques, le 3 mars 1956, l'Espagne abolit la prostitution et procéda à la fermeture des maisons closes. La prostitution ne devait pas disparaître pour autant.

Durant le second Moyen Âge, le commerce charnel connait un changement important matérialisé par l’instauration de bordels publics, justifiés par la nécessité d’instaurer un lieu destiné à canaliser les amours vénales. Cette prostitution institutionnalisée apparaît dans un contexte de développement urbain et, dans le Midi toulousain, de réapparition du modèle du consulat. La manière dont est organisée la prostitution, qu’elle soit institutionnalisée ou échappe au contrôle des autorités laïques et ecclésiastiques, permet d’observer la société médiévale dans son ensemble : de l’action des pouvoirs politiques à la répartition des espaces de vénalité dans les villes comme à la campagne, en passant par l’étude des différents acteurs du monde prostitutionnelBetween the Thirteenth and the Sixteenth Century, the apparition of public brothels -whose function was to regulate venal sex- transformed deeply the landscape of prostitution in the Midi toulousain. The institutionalization of prostitution was contemporary with a period of urban development and with the reintroduction of the political model of the consulate for the specific case of the Midi toulousain. The way in which prostitution was organized—whether it was an institutional activity or whether it circumvented the control of lay as well as Church authorities—offers us a global picture of society of the late Middle Ages. This issue of prostitution will lead us to consider the regulating actions taken by the political powers. We will also analyze the spatial repartition of prostitution, both in the cities and in the countryside. This study will also assess the multi-faceted parts played by the various actors of the world of prostitution

Cette recherche s'efforce d'articuler le niveau macrosocial des fondements normatifs, historiquement situés, sous-tendant le fait prostitutionnel et l'échelle plus microsociale des actions de santé conduites auprès des personnes se prostituant. La première partie de la thèse interroge la nature problématique de la prostitution pour la démarche sociologique, du fait des antagonismes qu'elle suscite, et met en exergue la nécessité d'affronter cette particularité en expliquant les idéaux engagés dans la controverse. Outre cette clarification permettant de rapporter de telles dissensions à la question de la libre disposition de soi face à l'érosion des modes de régulation traditionnels, le fait d' « historiciser » le phénomène concerné amène à constater que celui-ci a perdu tout caractère d'évidence dans nos sociétés occidentales contemporaines, contrevenant désormais aux schèmes de pensée qui gouvernent notre sexualité. La seconde partie de l'analyse présente les résultats d'une enquête ethnographique effectuée en Belgique et en France au sein d'associations réalisant des actions de prévention des infections sexuellement transmissibles ou proposant des consultations médicales dédiées aux prostituées. Complétée par un examen de l'utilisation du registre sanitaire dans la littérature militante, cette étude comparative a permis de faire ressortir les enjeux moraux et politiques impliqués dans la définition des risques menaçant les intéressées mais aussi la participation de ces interventions à la mise en forme collective de l'expérience prostitutionnelle.

Parce qu'elle indique l'expression socialement acceptable de la sexualité, l'éducation à la sexualité diffusée par une société reflète ses représentations et ses choix en matière d'organisation sociale de la sexualité. L'objet de cette thèse est d'analyser dans une perspective socio-historique (du début du XXe siècle à aujourd'hui) et socio-culturelle franco-suédoise, les méthodes et théories d'éducation à la sexualité, afin d'y discerner les conceptions du genre et des sexualités qu'elles véhiculent. Si la pratique de l'éducation à la sexualité reste encore aujourd'hui, en Suède comme en France, largement dépendante de volontés individuelles et non généralisée, les méthodes développées sont en revanche mieux structurées et plus étayées en Suède qu'en France. Une analyse de contenu de plusieurs supports d'éducation à la sexualité (textes officiels et diverses productions écrites et illustrées) ainsi que des entretiens avec des personnes ressources permettent de définir certaines caractéristiques des deux pays en ce domaine : tandis que la Suède a commencé à intégrer à son éducation à la sexualité une réflexion critique sur le genre, c'est loin d'être le cas en France. La problématisation de l'hétéronormativité est par ailleurs tout à fait absente de l'éducation française à la sexualité, alors qu'elle se diffuse peu à peu dans les textes officiels suédois, sous l'impulsion de mouvements associatifs et d'universitaires. Or, en l'absence d'une réflexion critique sur le genre et l'hétéronormativité - ce que l'on constate en France, et dans une moindre mesure en Suède - la conception de la sexualité diffusée par l'éducation à la sexualité est biologisante (centrée sur la reproduction), associant la sexualité au sentiment amoureux (norme du couple et de l'amour), négative (centrée sur les risques), différentialiste (hommes et femmes étant présentés comme complémentaires), et hétéronormative. Une partie de l'analyse se concentre sur des méthodes alternatives : la pédagogie inclusive et la pédagogie critique de la norme, élaborées en Suède et appliquées à l'éducation à la sexualité.

Vivre avec le VIH constitue un contexte particulier au sein duquel se mêlent des contraintes externes (traitement, secret autour de la sérologie, port systématique du préservatif) et des représentations associant fréquemment VIH et sexualité d'une manière spécifique. Nous avons étudié l'expérience subjective de la sexualité chez des jeunes adultes séropositifs, et son articulation à celle du VIH, en examinant l'impact du genre et du mode de contamination sur les représentations de la sexualité, considérées comme le lieu d'un aménagement subjectif entre le monde psychique et la biographie d'un sujet, au sein du cadre socioculturel dans lequel il évolue. 21 entretiens, recueillis auprès de personnes des deux sexes, âgées de 18 à 25 ans, contaminées par voie materno-foetale et par voie sexuelle, et analysés par une méthode inspirée de la Grounded Theory, ont été réalisé. Parmi les sujets interrogés, nous avons observé différentes expériences de la sexualité en lien avec différentes expériences de la vie avec le VIH en fonction du genre et du mode de contamination. Trois profils différents ont été observés parmi les sujets contaminés par voie sexuelle, alors que l'expérience de la sexualité de ceux qui ont été contaminé par voie materno-fœtale est apparue assez homogène Nous avons montré comment le secret autour de la séropositivité ou sa révélation au partenaire sexuel joue un rôle organisateur dans l'activité sexuelle (abstinence, relations occasionnelles ou durables). Nous avons également analysé comment le port systématique du préservatif pouvait devenir un indice de la maladie et entraîner des rapports non protégés. Chez tous les sujets, nous avons observé une représentation associant le VIH à une sexualité transgressive, déterminante pour l'expérience de la sexualité.

La pornographie fait partie du paysage de notre société. Le processus de massification qui s'est produit, essentiellement des années 1970 à nos jours, l'a progressivement conduit à devenir une industrie culturelle colossale soulevant des questions relatives aux discours dont elle est la matière (professionnels du secteur de production, journalistes, profanes, politiques, etc.). La pornographie est un objet social et culturel, relevant d’enjeux économiques, politiques et esthétiques, et semble de fait avoir gagné en légitimité au sein-même de la recherche scientifique durant cette dernière décennie. Instituée en courant de pensée ici (porn studies anglo-saxonnes), en sous-champ de recherche là (pornographie lesbienne, etc.), ce « nouveau » terrain de recherche pourrait bien constituer un prolongement des études sur le genre et la sexualité. C’est ce processus de mutation d’un objet marginal vers un objet conforme au système académique que nous nous proposons d’élucider dans cette thèse. Ce travail a pour but de réhistoriciser l’émergence des différents travaux français s’attachant à la question de la pornographie. L’élaboration de cette cartographie permettra d’une part, de découvrir le noyau et la constitution des études de la pornographie en France, et d’autre part, de dépeindre l’aspect communicationnel propre à la construction, à la mutation et à la transmission du savoir. Ces processus apparaissent alors tant dans les relations qu’il est possible d’établir entre différents champs scientifiques, que dans la circulation des savoirs propres à la science en train de se faire. These processes appear both in the possible relations between different scientific fields and in the flow of knowledge specific to the science that is in the making. This research could also make a heuristic contribution to studies that have already been carried out since the 1980s in Sociology or History of Science about the emergence of new disciplines and new research fields and topics

L'analyse des représentations de la sexualité dans la presse magazine française depuis 1968 indique qu'elles sont un enjeu des rapports sociaux de sexe, de classe, de génération, de " race". Elles légitiment ces catégorisations ou sont au contraire des moyens de subversion. Produits de contextes sociohistoriques spécifiques, ces discours ne sont pas chargés des mêmes enjeux selon les lectorats visés. Ces représentations n'échappent pas à une stratégie de naturalisation différenciée des catégories. La presse magazine discourt régulièrement de pornographie. Cette médiatisation sert des objectifs divers selon les lectorats. Son traitement médiatique et universitaire exacerbe les stratégies de discours et de représentations de la sexualité. L'hypothèse d'un rapport social de sexualité est questionnée, instaurant une hiérarchisation entre straights et parias sexuels. Les représentations de la sexualité dans la presse magazine confirment l'hypothèse de la sexualité comme sphère privilégiée de classification et de hiérarchisation. Elle est aussi porteuse d'émancipation.

De tout temps, l’homme semble s’être résigné à effectuer le parcours de son existence sous l’influence voire la tutelle du secret. Notre société contemporaine ne déroge pas à cette emprise. Bien souvent, l’homme apparaît « chargé » d’un secret dont il ne cherchera pas obligatoirement à s’alléger. Tout au contraire. Le secret semble se révéler sous une forme protectrice assurant une fonction de synchronisme entre les membres du groupe. Un secret qui devient illusion et qui rend possible la modification d’un triste ou inadapté réel. Le secret s’inscrit à la croisée du sacré, de l’imaginaire et parfois même de l’interdit. Le secret, objet polysémique et polymorphe voit son sens, ses fonctions, ses formes varier selon l’environnement auquel il est confronté. Cette recherche se présente et se vit tel un voyage, une exploration où l'on passe transversalement à travers les abysses de trois mondes parallèles que sont : l’adultère, la maladie, la franc-maçonnerie. Vivre une expédition sur des terrains aussi abondants et hétéroclites nécessite l'accompagnement d'un guide. L'accompagnateur choisi est le personnage de la légende de Faust. Grâce à l'appui de ce guide nous avons pu voyager à la découverte du secret en emportant dans nos bagages, symbolique et imaginaire… De par nos voyages, le secret s’est construit comme une entité narrative à la manière des mythes. Un secret puisant sa force dans cette capacité à exister au travers d’ombres et de contraires. Un secret qui nous offre à la fois charme vénéneux, puissance, pouvoir et magie. .At all times, Man seems to have resigned himself to perform the course of his existence under the influence or even the tutelage of secrecy. Our contemporary society does not infringe upon this rule. Very often, Man appears "loaded" with a secret which inevitably he will not try to discard. Quite the contrary. This research is presented and is experienced as a voyage, an exploration passing through the abysses of three parallel worlds, those of adultery, illness and freemasonry. To experience such an expedition in such abounding and heterogeneous fields requires the accompaniment of a guide. The companion chosen is the character of the Faust legend. With the help of this guide we have been able to travel into the depths and discover secrecy itself, carrying with us in our luggage, symbolism and imagination…Throughout our voyages, secrecy has become a myth-like narrative entity, drawing its strength from this ability to exist through shadows and opposites, providing us simultaneously with a poisonous charm, potency, power and magic

L'art intègre parfois dans ses processus créatifs les témoignages corporels, sexuels, personnels et subjectifs/subjectivants de l'artiste, mais aussi de sujets sociaux qui s'opposent aux constructions sociales et culturelles imposées par le(s) biopouvoir(s) hégémonique(s). Cette thèse présente un art biocritique capable de reconnaître la potentialité esthétique et artistique des témoignages et des vécus qu'il intègre en tant que matériel plastique à sa biocritique artistique. Elle a pour objectif de proposer une théorie et une méthode de déconstruction esthétique permettant d'observer et de rendre observable les potentialités esthétiques des corporalités et sexualités subjectivantes considérées comme " abjectes " par le biopouvoir en tant qu'actions biocritiques esthético-politiques. Pour ce faire, le présent travail a mis en valeur la potentialité esthétique de l'autoérotisme et de l'orgasme, en tant qu'actions biocritiques menées dans le cadre de " l'Œuvre multiorgasmique collective ".

Cette recherche cartographie la sexualité, elle cherche à lui donner un espace. Elle étudie comment la sexualité européenne se construit à l'époque moderne. Un fond de carte est élaboré à partir d'auteurs, particulièrement le Dr Krafft-Ebing, qui ont posé les jalons de la science de la sexualité, ainsi que d'autres champs sociaux qui s'en sont faits les relais. Cela montre l'importance des perversions dans la mise en place de " normes invisibles " de la sexualité. Il s'agit alors de donner un espace à ces territoires et flux de la sexualité - de faire une carte de l'orientation sexuelle.Les corps, les affects et les pratiques physico-sexuelles constituent les catalyseurs de la sexualité : ils sont investis de significations sociales (codes) et à leur tour codent et signifient (interfaces). La sexualité dans ses fonctions classificatrices et hiérarchisantes, disperse des vecteurs de contrôle des populations. Elle est une technique de structuration des populations par groupes raciaux et socio-économiques culturellement homogènes. La sexualité est liée à des visions impériales de ce que doivent être un homme normal, une femme normale, et les deux dans leur complémentarité. Ceci est affaire d'affinités : qui noue des liens ? Comment et pourquoi ? La sexualité prend alors une importance majeure dans la définition du soi, de ces zones de sédimentation qui ne sont pas seulement des démarches individuelles, mais aussi des politiques de comment vivre ensemble.

Etudier les discours sur la sexualité à Vienne et à Berlin entre 1900 et 1914 implique une double perspective de recherche. D’une part, il s’agit de s’intéresser aux sources et aux témoignages les plus divers de cette période dans les domaines socio-culturel, religieux, scientifique, juridique, intellectuel et artistique, d’autre part il s’agit de mettre en regard deux grandes métropoles de l’aire germanophone, deux sites de la modernité, Vienne, capitale d’un Empire qui se désagrège progressivement, ville érotisée qui oscille entre tradition et modernité, rêve et réalité, et Berlin, métropole en plein essor, ville de contrastes, à la fois austère et fascinante, soumise à l’autorité et fortement sexualisée. Dans un premier temps, les grands discours institutionnels sur la sexualité, ceux de l’Eglise, de la science et de l’Etat sont analysés dans cette étude de même que les oppositions qu’ils suscitent, particulièrement dans les écrits de Karl Kraus et les revues intellectuelles berlinoises. Il apparaît que rien n’est laissé au hasard : le disparate sexuel est passé au crible, classé et codifié afin que rien n’échappe au contrôle des instances normatives. Dans un deuxième temps, ce travail invite à l’exploration de l’univers littéraire et artistique de Vienne et de Berlin et montre comment le disparate sexuel, pourtant soigneusement mis sous surveillance, s’expose – progressivement ou brutalement – aux regards. On the one hand, the question is to look at the diverse sources and accounts of this period in the socio-cultural, religious, scientific, legal, intellectual and artistic fields. On the other hand, the question is to compare two big cities of the German-speaking area, two sites of modernity : Vienna, the capital of a declining empire, an erotised city oscillating between tradition and modernity, dream and reality and Berlin, an expanding metropolis, a city of contrasts, both austere and fascinating, subjected to authority and strongly sexualized. In a first part, the institutional discourses made by the church, the science and the state about sexuality are analysed in this study along with the oppositions they raise, particularly in Karl Kraus’s writings and in the intellectual reviews of Berlin. Nothing is left at random : the sexual disparity is examined closely, classified and codified so that nothing remains out of control from the normative instances. In a second part, this work explores the literary and artistic universe of Vienna and Berlin and shows how the sexual disparity, yet carefully watched on, shows itself progressively or violently. If there are obvious contrasts in the way of showing sexuality in Vienna and Berlin, the artists have in common the expression of the human being’s anguish, unsteadiness and suffering in a threatened world

Les " êtres de fiction " (Souriau/Latour) qu'ils mettent en scène expérimentent dans l'espace, dans des décors merveilleux ou dans une campagne réenchantée par une humeur gaillarde, des relations sexuelles utopiques. Ces relations tissent un " nouveau monde amoureux " qu'on peut qualifier de " libéral " par le soin accordé aux goûts de chacun-e, la générosité à l'égard des déshérité-e-s de l'amour et la pluralité de ses formes d'association. Notre enquête dégage ainsi un nouveau type de coopération, indissociablement littéraire et intellectuelle, entre des auteurs et des textes d'époques différentes, qui pouvaient ne se connaître que de loin, mais qui s'avèrent consonner de près : une même ouverture cosmique, un éthos sexuel commun, une semblable gaieté fictionnelle se traduisent par la formation d'une utopie sexuelle et textuelle convergente. L’analyse des dispenses de mariage met en relief le caractère marqué d’appartenance au groupe communautaire. Le matériau judiciaire permet de scruter la dynamique de la violence dans la famille. Il donne en outre un éclairage nouveau sur les rapports des Finistériens avec la justice et l’appareil judiciaire d’État, ainsi que sur la part d’obstruction à l’action de normalisation de la justice que constituent l’usage de la langue bretonne et le poids des traditions. Le choc des cultures en lice est-il le signe augural de la déliquescence d’une civilisation paroissiale face à la modernité ?Drawing on the combined resources of the judicial and diocesan archives, this study of the spectre of violence within the family group unfolds against the backdrop of the rural and maritime society of Finistère during the period of cultural change that took place in the XIXth century. The study of marriage dispensations stresses the deep importance of belonging to a community group. The material from the archives of the judiciary allows us to gauge the dynamics of violence within the family. Moreover, it sheds a new light on the relationship between the people of Finistère’s own justice system and the machinery of the law, as well as the part played by the Breton language and the weight of tradition as a hindrance in the process of normalization of law. Was this clash of cultures an ominous sign, foretelling the decay of a parochial civilization facing modernity ?

Cette thèse en psychopathologie et psychanalyse se propose d’interroger la rencontre entre singularités subjectives et déterminants sociétaux afin d’en hypothéquer les possibles résonnances qui ont permis l’avènement de la première citoyenneté adulte de sexuation non-specific. Quelles conséquences la reconnaissance des nouvelles identités non binaires peut-elle engendrer sur la modélisation de l’appareil psychique et quels aménagements théoriques peut-on envisager pour la théorisation psychanalytique du XXIème siècle ?Since the beginning of the 20th century and Freud's theoretical progresses on the unconscious, Western societies have gradually evolved towards a depathologization of sexualities and sexuations. To such an extent that the year 2014 saw the officialization of a non-specific sex identity on the Australian territory. Si l'historiographie associe classiquement le changement social des enjeux du genre et de l'intime de cette période aux acteurs sociaux que furent les étudiants ainsi qu'au phénomène de la sécularisation, cette étude veut renouveler le champ en se penchant sur les jeunes de mouvements confessionnels, qui se pense de surcroît à destination des milieux populaires. Nées dans l'entre-deux-guerres sur une ligne intransigeante de reconquête morale et chrétienne des ouvriers, JOCF et JOC deviennent des acteurs paradoxaux mais réels des évolutions de genre dans la société française des Trente Glorieuses. Ils représentent une voie moyenne du changement social en cherchant un positionnement ecclésial et social original en accord à la double injonction chrétienne et militante de l'identité de leur mouvement. Historiography makes a link between social changements in gender or intimacy issues during this time and students as social actors and the phenomenon of secularization, however, this study would like to renew the field by focusing on the young people in a religious mouvements aimed at the working class. Born in the interwar period on a line of uncompromising moral and Christian reconquest of the workers, YWCs became unexpected but real actors of gender evolutions in French society of the postwar boom. The mouvements represent a middle way of social change by seeking an original ecclesial and social position in accordance with the double injunction of a Christian and social activist movement. The beginning of the coeducation, debates on gender equality in schools, at work or in society, as well as matters of sexual emancipation are a good historic observatory of the evolution on gender. While Catholicism gradually abandoned as a primary form insertion into society as a lay specialized Catholic Action from the 1970s, this history is also that of the consequences of secularization on a denominational movement. My main goal is to highlight the importance of sex education for young people in Javanese society. Research foci and discoveries include: how the notions of conservatism with regards to sexuality are rooted in Javanese culture and social values; the definitions, history, components, methods and principles of Western sex education (particularly Canadian); the measures of success for sex education programs in the West; and to what extent Western sex education can be applied to Javanese society. In the final chapter I offer recommendations for Javanese educational authorities on the need to create a new terminology of sex education.

There have been many previous scholarly works on Chinese kinship, family, marriage, and interpersonal relationships. Studies of Chinese sexuality, however, are both limited in number and scope, and often conceptually inadequate. These enquiries tend to interpret sexuality as what social agents do, and as constructed by traditional cultural norms and governmental policies. When theorising Chinese sexuality, they fail to cut through a cluster of dualisms between objectivity and subjectivity, the abstract and the concrete, structure and agency, as well as East and West. Chinese sexuality is routinely analysed as pure and Othered: uncontaminated by Western sexuality.
This thesis instead uses an alternative approach to examine the everyday experience of Chinese men, women, and their sexuality in the current globalised context. It investigates how such experience is shaped by distinct social institutions, primarily the family. In contrast to previous studies of Chinese sexuality, in this thesis, sexuality is theorised as contested bodily experiences. These bodily experiences are demonstrative of both what social agents do and who social agents are. By situating the investigation in the contingent relationship between China and the West, the dissertation aims to reveal the effect of such relational contingency in producing the reality of sexuality that Chinese people experience in the contemporary context. The study employs a feminist appropriation of Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical framework of field and habitus to investigate the dynamics between structure, dispositions, and agency. It combines Xiaomei Chen’s concept of the Chinese Occidentalism discourse and Pierre Bourdieu’s notion of symbolic capital to highlight the significance of the West (Occident) in the everyday interpretation and formation of Chinese sexuality. The research embraces a qualitative approach: the empirical data was collected via in-depth interviews with more than thirty informants, and six months of occasional field-observations in Shanghai, China.
The main finding is that within contemporary Chinese culture the meaning of sexuality experienced in everyday life is charged with tension between orthodoxy and heterodoxy. The analysis of the qualitative data is written in three parts. The first section analyses the informants’ perception of family, identity, and sexuality. It highlights the way the Occident is deployed by social agents as symbolic capital, to critique and challenge the official and orthodox interpretation of family, identity, and sexuality. The Occident symbolic capital enables social agents to define their own version of what they do and who they are. The second part follows the informants’ definition of the Chinese family and uses Bourdieu’s notion of field to sketch the family field as revealed by the narratives. It probes the structural positions, and the relational dynamics amongst these positions within the family field. It shows that the family field structurally shapes and curbs the social rhythms of a Chinese person’s life, and thus is indispensable in producing the orthodox experience of sexuality. Yet, such orthodoxy is contested by social agents in different ways for different reasons. The final part examines the everyday experiences of sexuality by demonstrating the structuring of sexuality within the family field. It shows that sexuality, considered as a disposition and an embodied habitus, is ‘predictably novel’: an effect of the dialectical interplay between structure and agency. This ‘predictable novelty’ marks the way that sexuality is experienced as both what social agents do and who social agents are, and that sexuality is not ahistorical, unambiguous, or a universally valid experience.

Ce dernier est pourtant un objet tout à fait étrange. C'est une catégorie médico-psychologique présente depuis plus d'un siècle et demi dans l'univers psychopathologique. Elle présente cependant des aspects indéniablement moraux, dont il semble que la simple présence aurait du la disqualifier depuis longtemps aux yeux des savoirs de l'esprit malade. Comment rendre compte de la stabilité historique et épistémologique d'un concept au sein duquel convergent deux dimensions en apparence contradictoires ? Cette thèse se propose d'explorer cette articulation du discours moral et du discours psychopathologique sur la sexualité, à travers la généalogie du concept de perversion sexuelle dans la psychiatrie française durant le long XIXème siècle (1797-1912). It explores the rise of porn culture with an emphasis on Internet porn and the impact it has had on the distribution and availability of pornography. As a result, advertising companies and other producers of mainstream media have looked to the porn industry for ways to increase their profit margins. As sexual imagery has become a standard aspect of everyday life, it has impacted younger generations in terms of clothing and how they develop relationships. The popularity of social media applications has also helped to perpetuate the pornification of mainstream culture by focusing on physical appearance. The college hookup culture illustrates the lack of satisfaction that can result from the strictly sexual relationships highlighted in pornography. Acknowledging the effects of pornography can help to reduce the many problems that result from a hyper-sexualized society

Cette thèse s'appuie sur une ethnographie de l'expérience et du vécu des hommes aux identités sexuelles multiples. Ce faisant, ce travail vise à articuler analyse du contexte économique et sociopolitique dans lequel s'articule l'expérience de l'homosexualité au Sénégal à celle de l'ordinaire de ceux dont il est question dans ce volume. L'analyse des discours, écrits et violences souligne la nécessité de replacer la controverse sur l'homosexualité dans un contexte politique et historique plus large. La controverse sur l'homosexualité dans l'espace public relève de logiques et dynamiques liées au passé notamment colonial, mais aussi aux enjeux du présent relatifs au contexte du Sénégal contemporain. Les réactions violentes contre l'homosexualité depuis 2008 témoignent de la difficulté pour les hommes rencontrés de vivre une sexualité non orthodoxe et de l'existence d'identités sexuelles multiples. Ces réalités multiples doivent se comprendre en raison des représentations faites sur les pratiques sexuelles entre hommes et de l'illégitimité de ces pratiques présente dans plusieurs secteurs de la société sénégalaise. Ces logiques de dissimulation mettent à jour les problèmes auxquels se confronte une politique de prévention ciblée en direction de ceux qui sont nommés dans le contexte du sida MSM [Men who have sex with men]. Les différentes formes de violence et les inégalités sociales dans lequel s'insère le vécu des hommes aux identités sexuelles multiples nous renseignent sur leur rapport à la sexualité (avec les hommes et les femmes) et à la maladie. En outre, l'analyse ethnographique permet de rendre compte de la multiplicité des expériences relatives à l'homosexualité. Elle révèle divers degrés de connaissance et de reconnaissance de l'homosexualité au Sénégal. Cela permet ainsi d'envisager conjointement expérience du mépris et de la violence d'une part et formes de reconnaissance sociale d'autre part.

Sexual minority individuals face disparities of treatment from clinical and medical health professionals. In particular, there is a dearth of research and training surrounding human sexuality topics for sexual minorities. Research on sexual minority groups in this area can contribute to reducing treatment disparities. Consequently, the proposed study is a content analysis of social science literature in order to gauge trends in the amount of research focused on the intersection of sexual minorities and sex research. Articles from a database search of relevant keywords were coded for several variables, including overall level of focus on sexual minorities and on human sexuality topics, study sample composition, research funding sources, and whether the article offered any clinical implications. The study aims, with its results, to suggest possible directions for social science and sex research, in the hopes that future research will be better able to assist professionals in meeting the needs of an increasingly diverse population.

This study examined the responses to a sexuality education questionnaire completed by 30 single mothers and 43 married mothers with preschool-aged children. Chi-square analyses were used to examine differences between married mothers and single mothers; mothers of males and mothers of females; and married mothers of males, married mothers of females, single mothers of males and single mothers of females. Age at which their preschool children first exhibited behaviors, frequency of that behavior, and comfort level of mothers' responses to those behaviors were addressed for each topic: male-female differences, reproduction and birth, privacy or modesty, taboo or obscene words, genital play, and sexual exploration play.
Very few statistically significant differences were apparent in the comparisons that were made. Married mothers were more comfortable than single mother in responding to their child's questions about male-female differences and their child's use of taboo or obscene words. In addition, some interesting trends emerged. For instance, mothers tended to ex press more comfort when responding to hypothetical situations than when responding to actual situations. Questions about male-female differences, reproduction and birth, and privacy or modesty were responded to more frequently than questions about taboo or obscene words, genital play, or sexual exploration play. Moreover, maternal observation of behaviors that appeared to be more sensitive (and less comfortable, such as taboo or obscene words, genital play, and sexual exploration play) was lower than observation of less sensitive behaviors (male-female differences, privacy or modesty, and reproduction and birth). The implications of this study and directions for future research are discussed.

Un corpus de reves, soumis a differents types d'interpretations, a revele plusieurs themes. Dans une premiere etape, 101 reves sur la sexualite feminine, centree sur le mariage, en ont ete retenus. Des syntagmes recurrents dans le contenu manifeste et reintegres au vecu quotidien des reveuses, ont montre l'influence ecrasante de la culture dominante sur la psychologie feminine. Cette approche a ete justifiee theoriquement. Dans une seconde etape, un expose a porte sur l'interpretation des reves, selon la culture islamique classique. Celle-la serait a pourvoir d'une theorie de la psyche telle la freudienne ou la jungienne. Une psychologie de l'etre islamique serait a developper. La philosophie avicennienne, disposant d'une theorie de la psyche et du reve, a ete citee comme exemple. Selon ces donnees, des interpretations relatives a un sous-groupe des 101 reves, en ont demontre la transformation en reves premonitoires et l'existence d'un imaginaire. Celui-ci est particulierement hypertrophie lorsque se rencontrent reves, mort, maraboutisme, demonisme et magie, themes etudies a travers 34 autres revesMoroccans attach a great importance to dreams and to their interpretations. This phenomenon persits particularly within feminine society. A corpus of dreams which was the object of different interpretations has revealed several themes. Firstly, we have dealt with 101 dreams on feminine sexuality, with focus on marriage. Recurrent syntagmas in the manifest content were reintegrated into the dreamers' daily life. This has shown the overwhelming influence of dominant culture on femimine psychology, and theoretical justifications for such a finding were elaborated. Secondly, we have provided a detailed presentation on dream interpretation within the islamic classical culture, bringing out that there is still need for a theory of the psyche, such as freud's or jung's. Suggestions were made as to how one might develop a psychology of the islamic being which would be grounded in islamic philosophy. Avicenna's theory of the psyche and of dreaming was mentioned as a case in point. On such a theretical basis, an analysis of interpretations concerning a subgroup of the 101 dreams has revealed their transformation into premonetory dreams as well as the existence of an imaginary production. The latter is particularly overwhelming when dreams, death, maraboutism, demonism, and magic meet. These themes were analyzed through a sample of 34 other dreams

The main purpose of this essay has been to discover shortcomings in the Criminal law conserning sexual offences and in the application of this law. The primary material of the study has therefore been two different government bills considering 2005 and 2013 years’ provisions on rape, three rape cases, and the proposal for a new provision on rape based on consent as the primary legal definition of rape. From gender theories about power, gender and sexuality I have used discourse analysis as a method to analyze the material to see how the government relates to these questions when reasoning around a new provision on rape. I have also tried to examine why there are so few rape cases that get convicted by analyzing the cases to see how the judges reason around the woman´s responsibility in the events. Another purpose has been to examine how the new potential provision on rape built on consent could change the situation for the woman in rape cases. My conclusions are that there are flaws in the way that the rape provision is built and that a new law built on consent probably won´t have a significant impact on the situation of the woman other than that it might have a normative effect. The study has also shown that the government doesn’t consider elements as male dominance, gender and sexuality when arguing for a new law, which undermines the women’s situation. The study has also shown that the judges in rape cases has indirectly put responsibility on the women, while the prosecuted is acquitted due to his lack of understanding of the women’s resistance.Huvudsyftet med denna uppsats har varit att synliggöra brister i sexualbrottslagstiftningen och tillämpningen av denna. Det primära materialet i studien har därför varit två propositioner som behandlar våldtäktsbestämmelsen, den ena från år 2005 och den andra från 2013, tre olika rättsfall samt det nya förslaget till en samtyckeslag. Utifrån genusvetenskapliga teorier om makt, kön och sexualitet har jag använt diskursanalysen som metod för att analysera materialet för att se hur regeringen förhåller sig till dessa typer av frågor när de resonerar kring en ny våldtäktslag. Jag har också försökt undersöka varför det är så få våldtäktsfall som får fällande domar genom att analysera de olika fallen för att se hur domarna resonerar kring kvinnan och hennes ansvar under händelserna. Ett annat syfte har varit att undersöka hur det nya samtyckesförslaget skulle kunna förändra kvinnans situation i rättsfall. Mina slutsatser är att det finns brister i de sätt som våldtäktsbestämmelsen är uppbyggd på och att en ny samtyckeslag förmodligen inte har någon större inverkan på kvinnans situation förutom att den kan ha en normativ effekt. Studien har också visat att regeringen inte tar hänsyn till frågor som manlig dominans, kön och sexualitet i argumenten för en ny lag, vilket leder till att kvinnornas situation undergrävs. Studien har också visat att domarna i våldtäktsmål ställer ansvar på kvinnorna, medan den åtalade frikänns p.g.a. dennes bristande förståelse för kvinnornas motstånd.

The purpose of this essay is to investigate how personal relationships in a Creole society, including the one with art, might influence the main character Edna Pontellier's search for personal freedom in Kate Chopin's The Awakening (1899). The essay discusses, on the one hand, Edna's female relationships with Adele Ratignolle and Mlle. Reisz, and on the other hand her relationships with the three men Léonce Pontellier, Robert Lebrun and Alcée Arobin. In the novel Edna struggles to be a "mother woman" like Adele but also the opposite, that is to try to become an artist and an independent woman like Mlle. Reisz. Because of Edna's different relationships she starts to question her life situation. This essay concludes that Edna has ambiguous feelings within herself and that these feelings derive from the different personalities that she socializes with.

La question de l'essence de la sexualité féminine est l'une de celles qui firent d'emblée le plus débat au sein de la communauté psychanalytique, allant parfois jusqu'à être escamotée (le "continent noir" de Sigmund Freud). Toutefois, on sait que Freud a laissé échapper des bribes d'une théorisation alternative: on y rencontre une femme dotée d'un orifice vaginal, et dont le but sexuel passif est d'être pénétrée. D'où provient cette appétence à accueillir passivement l'autre en soi ? La pénétration génitale dans sa valence passive constitue le but pulsionnel ultime du développement psychosexuel féminin, celui qui permet la reproduction. Toutefois, il semble probable qu'une représentation psychique de celle-ci n'est pas le produit d'une génération spontanée à la puberté (comme l'a parfois suggéré Freud), mais qu'elle plonge ses racines dans les temps prégénitaux: elle ne peut manquer de s'appuyer sur la réalité du corps de la fille comme du garçon, porteur d'une dimension contenante-excitable. C'est pourquoi il nous semble possible d'isoler une composante pulsionnelle spécifique, qui vise le but passif d'être pénétré: une composante pulsionnelle vaginale. Ce travail de recherche est une généalogie de la notion de " désir sexuel " telle qu'elle fut conçue dans le christianisme antique du IIIe au Ve siècle. À partir de la distinction entre deux anthropologies concurrentes, nous cherchons à reconstituer les modalités selon lesquelles ce désir a été pensé comme une pulsion irrésistible. Nous nous inscrivons donc dans la tradition des études de genre puisque nous posons la question de savoir s'il existe, au fondement des catégorisations sociales et des modes de légitimation du pouvoir, une forme de naturalité irréductible. Notre objectif est de mettre en évidence, d'une part, en quoi l'idée de désir naturel est une forme de problématisation contingente du désir sexuel et, d'autre, part, les conséquences de cette façon de penser. Entre le IIIe et le Ve siècle, les auteurs chrétiens s'opposent en ce qui concerne la question des capacités humaines. Pour les " perfectionnistes ", l'homme est capable d'accéder par ses propres forces à la perfection. Par conséquent, le " monde " est pensé par eux comme un ensemble de liens qui entravent l'itinéraire spirituel du sujet. La solitude du " désert " apparaît alors dans ce cadre problématique comme un moyen d'accéder à la liberté. Au contraire, pour les " défaillantistes ", l'homme est par nature infirme, si bien que la perfection est conçue non plus comme ce à quoi il peut lui-même accéder, mais comme un don de Dieu. En soulignant que l'homme n'est pas le maître dans sa propre maison puisqu'il ne peut maîtriser sa libido, Augustin montre que sa libération n'est envisageable qu'au prix de sa soumission à des institutions coercitives ayant pour fonction de compenser sa faiblesse. Proposant une forme originale de problématisation de la nature humaine en naturalisant la pulsion sexuelle, le défaillantisme chrétien permet donc de justifier la soumission des hommes. En faisant la généalogie du désir sexuel, ce travail s'emploie à montrer que la liberté ne requiert pas seulement une critique de l'idée de répression, mais une remise en cause plus fondamentale du modèle naturaliste de la pulsion.

During the information sessions that the Scripps Mock Trial Team hosts at the beginning of the school year for those interested in mock trial, it's customary for all the returning team members to talk about why we decided to join mock trial in college. We had no team at my high school, but at the end of my senior year, my AP American Government teacher decided that having a mock trial in class would give us valuable insight into the American legal system. I was chosen to give the closing statement for the defense, and I found my calling. My competitive spirit had found an outlet where it was not hampered by the unathletic body that housed it: competitive arguing. I have not been able to find any scholarly text that examines the ways in which mock trial teams themselves adhere to gender-normative patterns. I believe that this thesiswill be invaluable to an understanding of how gender roles are performed in the legal profession

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between antecedents of sexuality and the level of sexual satisfaction in females who had been married no more than five years. Past research has examined communication, presence of orgasm, sexual desire, and frequency of sexual activity and various other antecedents of sexual satisfaction. One relationship that was an addition to those already found in the literature was sexual knowledge as an antecedent to sexual satisfaction. Six questions were formulated for the study: 1. How do females perceive their global sexual functioning? 2. How do females perceive their level of sexual satisfaction? 3. How accurately do females answer questions regarding female and male anatomy and physiology, sexual arousal and response, and sexual technique? 4. What is the relationship between the participants mean scores on the subscales of the Global Sexual Functioning (GSF) and their reported level of sexual satisfaction? 5. What is the relationship between the participants mean scores on the subscales of the Sexual Knowledge Inventory (SKI) and their reported level of sexual satisfaction? 6. What is the relationship between the participants mean scores on the subscales of the Sexual Knowledge Inventory (SKI) and their reported level of Global Sexual Functioning (GSF)? The research questions were tested with data from 217 females who completed a survey with questions about sexual functioning, sexual satisfaction and sexual knowledge. Results found that five variables accounted for 43% of the variance to sexual satisfaction namely: "variety of sexual activities," "not experiencing negative emotions," "frequency of sexual activity," "sexual dysfunction," and "the time intercourse lasts." Conclusions and suggestions for future research are presented.

New woman, a new word and concept put forth during the New Culture Movement beginning from 1919, when China was in the process of political, economic and cultural transformation which strongly influenced almost every aspect of society, was loaded with nationalistic connotations from the beginning and soon became a public venue to venture various discourses. Much research has been done on this topic, from the historical perspective of women’s emancipation, by studying it in the context of China’s modernization, from the angle of gender norms and sexuality, and so on. What sets my research apart is that I use New Woman--a 1934 film made in Shanghai which is especially dedicated to the image of new woman-- as my primary text and single out major themes in the film, such as “new woman” and nationalism, new woman’s struggles. In my research, I combine fictionalized narratives about new woman in literary works and films with historical discourses on new woman, and real life experiences of new woman such as Qiu Jin and Ruan Lingyu. My particular interest is to grasp the major sentiments expressed in the film and to investigate of the social and cultural context that had given rise to these sentiments. With no intention to be complete or exhaustive, this paper would consider its goal fulfilled by being able to grasp the main sentiments surrounding new woman and her place in Chinese society in the 1920s and 30s.

The present society seems to contradict the latter society. The present lifestyle
seemed to have no morals. If they do, they must have inherited from somewhere.
They see to have lost respect for other people's property etc.
South Africa's, new dispensation seemed to have eroded Ubuntu away. I am trying
to recapture, revive, relive, and resuscitate morality back in the agenda of every
South African. How? Moral regeneration is the vision or dream of the South
African Deputy President. But I believe it has taken a wrong direction. Politicians
cannot lead moral regeneration. Instead the church must lead it, because the church
has the spirituality.
The answer to moral decay is in the church. The church need to teach, rebuke and
lead by example on morality. It shall not compromise its gospel of Jesus Christ.
Today, South Africa is facing a serious crisis of sexuality, unfaithfulness in
marriages, corruption, unemployment, HIV Aids etc. morality is the broad concept,and in this thesis I've confirmed myself In addressing: sexuality, marriage
unfaithfulness and corruption.
Moral regeneration can be realised in this country, the church can address
unfaithfulness in marriages, sexuality and corruption vigorously. Parliament cannot
legislate on these issues. But the church can consciously teach people
responsibilities coupled with democracy.
Zeerust, is the small town in the North West Province. I have chosen to write this
thesis from Zeerust context. The reason being, I have pastoral oversight of
Methodist people in Zeerust and surrounding villages. Zeerust shares the same
problems the country is facing that of corruption, sexuality and unfaithfulness in
marriages.
Lastly, the church needs to take seriously the cultural factors of its indigenous
people. Before we became Christians, we were Africans. The church must be ready
to learn from people's cultures, and the way they kept moral uprightness. Dialogue
and consultations is a dire need between the church and the culture, between
theologians and African healers. This thesis says the church is the answer to moral

Traditionally, men are expected to arrange their lifestyle in a way that allows them to obtain the “package deal” of a career, becoming a husband, and fatherhood. This study quantitatively studies the effects of partnering on gay and straight men as mediated through the bar scene, aiming to explore how bar participation alters their social networks and their perceptions of social expectations. The ultimate goal is to determine if gay and straight men report differing social expectations such as becoming a husband and father. This investigation explores their beliefs on commitment, monogamy, and parenthood and seeks to determine whether these beliefs differ due to sexuality. Collecting data about how the men participate in the bar scene and if their participation differs after partnering will help reveal differences in social network composition, social expectations, and commitment. The data were collected from people 18 and older through a web-based survey linked directly to particular bars and other community sites within one urban region of Kentucky. Bar participation between gay men and straight men, particularly when partnered, did not differ significantly, suggesting similarities in social network composition. Social expectations did not vary much between gay and single men, but the commitment each group reported was conceptually different. This essay explores how James Baldwin’s short story Going to Meet the Man depicts racist attitudes toward African-Americans in American society. Further, this essay also shows how racism is linked to a circulation of emotions that unconsciously generates a xenophobic nation affecting even those who implicitly are regarded as genuine citizens of that community. By using two theoretical perspectives, Sara Ahmed’s theory of affective economies and some of Freud’s concepts from psychoanalysis, this essay analyzes Baldwin’s text and discovers how the American nation needs to accept and recognize its racist history, just as a child needs to acknowledge his or her fear when experiencing traumatic events. Baldwin’s narrative reinforces racist stereotypes while at the same time using the text to write back to a society that at the time of writing had not expected, but indeed needed, an African-American man to publish a book from a white man’s perspective.

The thesis discusses the topic of bodily autonomy as a Human Rights related matter in connection to sexuality, specifically BDSM. In the realm of BDSM concerns regarding bodily autonomy, bodily integrity, perversion, physical and mental health can be found. Therefore the space of BDSM is analyzed in regards to aspects, such as medico-judicial institutions, social and personal perception factor in on the space of bodily autonomy and its transgression, with the aim of getting a deeper understanding of the concept of bodily autonomy. Three different countries, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Denmark are being analyzed and compared in a content analysis. Foucault’s theory of power, self-disciplining, transgression as well as Bataille's theory of transgression and eroticism are made use of. This shows how and which topics relate to bodily autonomy and each other and how bodily autonomy and its use changes depending on the factors relation to each other and their prioritization.

Pornography use has become widespread and mainstream in American society, with estimates that 60% of men and 35% of women have viewed pornography at some time in the last year. Pornography use has been associated with both positive and negative outcomes depending on the user, and some of these conflicting results may stem from problematic measurement. Using a newly validated measure that assesses frequency, duration, arousal, and deliberate or accidental exposure to seven common types of pornography, we sought to understand if the motivations to view pornography differed depending on biological sex of the user and the type of use he or she engaged in. With an MTurk.com sample of 312 participants, we used a variable selection to explore the most consistent predictors of pornography use. Results found that sexually based motivations were consistent motivations to use pornography for both males and females. Educationally based motivations reliably predicted accidental exposure to pornography, while emotions like sadness and tiredness reliably predicted longer durations of pornography use. These results indicate that motivations to view pornography are similar for males and females, and that sexually based reasons and emotions are primary in an individual's decision to use pornography.

This study explored the longitudinal effects of adolescent pornography trajectories on risky sexual behavior, as well as predictors of pornography trajectories. Data was taken from Waves V-X of the Flourishing Families Project, which included a sample of 463 families. A zero-inflated Poisson growth mixture model was run to determine class participation and growth trajectories. Findings revealed that gender and religiosity significantly predicted class participation, and class participation significantly predicted risky sexual behavior. While this study did have limitations, this study adds to the previous literature by examining adolescent pornography trajectories over an extended period of time.

Women in vaKaranga society of the 15th to 17th centuries have been portrayed as oppressed by an "extremely patriarchal" system, but the reality, while still fitting the simple classification of a 'patriarchal' monarchy, indicates quite a bit more negotiation of gendered powers than women, as a class, experienced in the Mediterranean or East Asia. The vaKaranga were the architects of Great Zimbabwe, the capital of a growing state, colonizing their cousins of the Zambezi river, which their Kusi-Mashariki Bantu forefathers had traversed southward a millennium before. Civil war had (apparently) split one nation into two states, Mutapa (Monomotapa) and Khami (Torwa, Toroa, Changamire) immediately before Portuguese ships arrived at Sofala in 1502. Statements like "women are dust, one does not count dust" have been used to illustrate the traditional social outlook of the Shona, descendants of the vaKaranga and a major population in present-day Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and central Moçambique. However, close reading of early Portuguese-language sources on women in vaKaranga society suggests that, prior to influence from these original European colonists, vaKaranga women negotiated everyday and political power in a near-even exchange with men, predicated on the imbalance of power women held in the metaphysical dimension, their control of industries from gold production to staple crop production and a strategy for minimizing economic risk for a king transacting a brideprice or 'rovora' exchange. In this, vaKaranga women are exceptions to the theory that societies must become more gender imbalanced as they begin to form classes and state-level monarchies.

Neil Gaiman’s use of a hyper-masculine American culture in American Gods sheds light upon the multiple issues surrounding a misogynistic society in which women are treated as sexual objects and punished for their independence as sexual beings. Gaiman’s efforts at highlighting these issues are discreet and hidden under layers of patriarchal expectations, but through the use of his protagonist, Shadow, Gaiman is able to provide an alternative to the society he represents. While he successfully illustrates this more “ideal” society, his endeavors fall short and are almost imperceptible throughout his novel. Gaiman’s work in American Gods, while lacking in its overall presence, brings attention to the issues within a hyper-masculine society and it is through this unique, feminist approach that Gaiman is able to present his strong argument for change.
