Abstract:
What is missing from academia and society at large is a more holistic picture of youth sexting. Not adequately understanding youth sexting has stunted previous attempts to effectively educate young people on its potential consequences. As such, the social and legal consequences of sexting gone viral have negatively impacted countless individuals. This study offers a preliminary glimpse of the sexting phenomenon by highlighting the experiences of 20 young people. I explore emergent themes regarding the nature of youth sexting as well as the interrelations amongst privacy, relationships, and sexting. Two distinct forms of sexting emerged from participant narratives, opening the door for more open-minded discussions and social policies cognizant of both the positive and negative outcomes of electronic forms of sexual communication. In general, participant discourse on youth sexting demonstrates a need for more research on the topic as well as updated forms of sexting education in schools and amongst families.

Abstract:
The study of two municipal urban plans is a matter of overstepped the neo-institutional viewpoint of the local government study for wonder about the actor's structuring who have various membership. By the use of national state models, this work attempts to analyse the local public policies and the urban governance, and the possibilities and the limits of this size changing. This work is composed of three parts, corresponding to three moments of the analysis : the first establishes the local and national representations role in the development of local urban plans. The second examines the actor's structuring beyond their institutional status, and study the interpersonal mobilisations, from the analysis of networking studies. The third studies the production of ideas and "rules of game" between actors. This two urban plans attest that public policies take off the formation of local norms of action

Abstract:
Ancient Greek philosophical schools are said to share a common structure in their ethical theories which is characterized by a eudaimonistic teleology based in an understanding of human nature. At first glance, the skepticism of Sextus Empiricus as described in the Outlines of Pyrrhonism seems to fit into this model insofar as he describes the end of the skeptic as ataraxia, a common account of the expression of human happiness. I argue that this is a misunderstanding of Sextus’s philosophy for several reasons. “The end of skepticism” cannot be eudaimonistic or teleological in the way that other ancient ethical theories are typically understood; moreover, ataraxia is not an end derived from a theory about human nature. For these reasons, the skeptical way of life is radically different than the ethical theories proposed by other schools. I argue that this difference is a result of the character of the skeptical enterprise which involves the implicit rejection of norms in both the epistemological and the ethical spheres.

Abstract:
In his Outlines of Skepticism, Sextus Empiricus claims that the Pyrrhonian Skeptic can live without holding beliefs. According to the 'Rustic' interpretation of this claim, Sextus holds that the Skeptic lives without beliefs of any kind. According to the 'Urbane' interpretation, Sextus' claim concerns only a restricted category of beliefs. I discuss each interpretation in the context of Sextus' broader philosophical stance, and argue for an Urbane interpretation. On this view, Pyrrhonism represents a practicable stance towards the world.

Josi, Johannes. "Nodal rational sextics in the real projective plane." Thesis, Sorbonne université, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018SORUS076.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis studies nodal sextics (algebraic curves of degree six), and in particular rational sextics, in the real projective plane. Two such sextics with k nodes are called rigidly isotopic if they can be joined by a path in the space of real nodal sextics with k nodes. The main result of the first part of the thesis is a rigid isotopy classification of real nodal sextics without real nodes, generalizing Nikulin’s classification of non-singular sextics. In the second part we study sextics with real nodes and we describe the rigid isotopy classes of such sextics in the case where the sextics are dividing, i.e., their real part separates the complexification (the set of complex points) into two halves. As a main application, we give a rigid isotopy classification for those nodal real rational sextics which can be perturbed to maximal or next-to-maximal sextics in the sense of Harnack’s inequality. Our approach is based on the study of periods of K3 surfaces, drawing on the Global Torelli Theorem by Piatetski-Shapiro and Shafarevich and Kulikov’s surjectivity theorem, as well as Nikulin’s results on symmetric integral bilinear forms

Abstract:

This study examined the practice of sexting (the exchange of nude or semi-nude photos through text messaging) among 401 undergraduate students ages 18 to 25 at California State University, Fresno. A computer survey with separate tracks for sexters and non-sexters differentiated data between the two groups. The researcher found that one in three students sexted. Pearson’s χ 2 test indicated a statistical significance between female non-Hispanic White casual daters and sexting. Among key findings, a majority of sexters infrequently exchanged a small number of photos with their boyfriends or girlfriends. Face cropping and smartphone applications were used most often for protection against harmful effects. Less than a fifth of respondents had their sext forwarded without their consent or were bullied with the photo. Over half of the students that sexted perceived their sexting activity led to having sex with that person. Those who did not engage in sexting perceived sexters to be unaware of the risks attached to the practice and perceived sexting as inappropriate. The findings demonstrated a range of risky and protective behaviors, experiences, and perceptions exist among Fresno State students that have adopted or rejected the practice of sexting. Recommendations for future studies include further exploration on the sexting behaviors between relationship partners as well as the types of applications used to sext.

Yoo, Seonguk. "Extremal sextic truncated moment problems." Diss., University of Iowa, 2011. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1113.

Abstract:
Inverse problems naturally occur in many branches of science and mathematics. An inverse problem entails finding the values of one or more parameters using the values obtained from observed data. A typical example of an inverse problem is the inversion of the Radon transform. Here a function (for example of two variables) is deduced from its integrals along all possible lines. This problem is intimately connected with image reconstruction for X-ray computerized tomography. Moment problems are a special class of inverse problems. While the classical theory of moments dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, the systematic study of truncated moment problems began only a few years ago. In this dissertation we will first survey the elementary theory of truncated moment problems, and then focus on those problems with cubic column relations. For a degree 2n real d-dimensional multisequence β ≡ β (2n) ={β i}i∈Zd+,|i|≤2n to have a representing measure μ, it is necessary for the associated moment matrix Μ(n) to be positive semidefinite, and for the algebraic variety associated to β, Vβ, to satisfy rank Μ(n)≤ card Vβ as well as the following consistency condition: if a polynomial p(x)≡ ∑|i|≤2naixi vanishes on Vβ, then Λ(p):=∑|i|≤2naiβi=0. In 2005, Professor Raúl Curto collaborated with L. Fialkow and M. Möller to prove that for the extremal case (Μ(n)= Vβ), positivity and consistency are sufficient for the existence of a (unique, rank Μ(n)-atomic) representing measure. In joint work with Professor Raúl Curto we have considered cubic column relations in M(3) of the form (in complex notation) Z3=itZ+ubar Z, where u and t are real numbers. For (u,t) in the interior of a real cone, we prove that the algebraic variety Vβ consists of exactly 7 points, and we then apply the above mentioned solution of the extremal moment problem to obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a representing measure. This requires a new representation theorem for sextic polynomials in Z and bar Z which vanish in the 7-point set Vβ. Our proof of this representation theorem relies on two successive applications of the Fundamental Theorem of Linear Algebra. Finally, we use the Division Algorithm from algebraic geometry to extend this result to other situations involving cubic column relations.

Ireland, Michelle. "The sexting experiences of a female adolescent." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/61267.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explored the sexting behaviour of a female adolescent in Cape Town, South Africa. Sexting has rapidly increased in recent years and concerns regarding the risks associated with the behaviour have prompted an increase in research on the topic. The rationale for the study included an acknowledgement of risks and the prevalence of the behaviour, and thus a need to fully understand sexting to prevent negative outcomes for adolescents. Few qualitative studies exist, meaning that the depth of an individual’s experiences has not been fully explored and nuances of the behaviour may have been missed. Furthermore, few studies have been grounded in specific theories. The purpose of the study was thus to explore a female adolescent’s subjective sexting experiences and perspectives through qualitative means grounded in the Theory of Planned Behaviour. Research questions aimed to explore the existing empirical and theoretical perspectives of sexting, motivations for sexting and consequences of sexting.   An interpretivist research paradigm was employed with a qualitative approach. The research design was a single, descriptive case study and data was gathered through a semi-structured interview, observations and a reflective researcher journal. Selection criteria for sampling the participant included being between the ages of 18 and 19, female and having exposure to the topic. Inductive thematic analysis was conducted on the transcribed interview data to establish themes and subthemes.  The resulting four themes are, firstly, the participant’s definition, conceptualisation and categorisation of sexting; secondly, the participant’s perceptions of motivations for engaging in sexting; thirdly, the participant’s beliefs concerning the consequences of sexting; and lastly, the participant’s ideas on the protection of adolescents from negative consequences of sexting. To summarise each theme: theme 1 established that the participant defined sexting as being both text-based and image-based and that each has differing purposes with a variety of technological influences. Theme 2 showed that the participant perceived the motivations for sexting to be associated with physical pleasure, emotional pleasure, intimacy, getting attention, seeking a relationship, coercion, a long-distance relationship, and for sexual communication. In theme 3 the participant described the consequences of sexting as being emotional and social and as punishment from adults. Theme 4 presented the participant’s ideas on how adolescents might be protected from the consequences of sexting on an individual level and through interventions by adults. When compared to the literature, the study confirmed many existing themes, while new data was identified along with gaps in the literature. This prompted recommendations for further research and assisted in informing recommendations for future intervention. The study’s findings added to the qualitative literature on the sexting experiences of a female adolescent. Using the Theory of Planned Behaviour means that the study added to understanding of how the theory may be utilised when qualitatively exploring sexting. Further, a South African case study was added to the body of knowledge on sexting.   Keywords: sexting behaviour, sexuality, adolescents, theory of planned behaviour, qualitative research, educational psychology

Abstract:
Subject of this thesis is the sixth book of Flavius Cresconius Corippus’ Iohannis. This section is focused on the preparation and the progress of a big battle: the Moorish tribes reassemble and form a new coalition, a fact that comes with a total subversion of the narrative balance. An Italian full translation will be provided as well as the commentary of Coripp. Ioh. 6, 1-126. A rich introduction - divided into two main sections and preceding both the translation and commentary - primarily concerns Corippus’ historical and cultural background (to the extent that it is possible, considering the lack of information available) and the tradition of the Iohannis through the only surviving manuscript, the Trivultianus 686. A brief reference ismade to the manuscript tradition of Corippus’ panegyric In laudem Iustini. The complex issue of the literary genre is approached, since the Iohannis contains several elements arising from the epic genre, along with a clear encomiastic purpose torwards John Troglita and the Emperor Justinian himself. The main literary models are addressed as well as the ideological and religious framework, the language, the style and the metre of the Iohannis. After that the sixth book will be examined with regard to: literary composition (between history and literary stereotypes), role within the poem, epic shapes, historical interest (use of the indigenous ethnonyms; Byzantine policy towards the rebel tribes; Moorish value system and shared spirituality)

Abstract:

Abstract:
Curves of degree 6 in the complex projective space can be interpreted as surfaces. These sur-faces can have holes, how many holes a surface has is called its genus. This thesis will investigate exactly what genera these surfaces can have. First, an upper bound for the genus is found, which turns out to be 4. Then, examples of curves of each genera are found and we conclude that it is possible to construct sextic space curves of all genera up to 4.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to assess attitudes toward sexting, subjective norms toward sexting, self-esteem levels, sexting behavioral intentions, and sexting behaviors (i.e. sending, posting, or sharing/forwarding sexually suggestive messages, nude/semi-nude pictures/videos, or both) among selected undergraduate students and also to determine relationships among attitudes toward sexting, subjective norms toward sexting, self-esteem levels, sexting behavioral intentions, and sexting behaviors. Results of this study showed statistically significant differences in sexting behaviors among demographic variables gender, current relationship status, lifetime sexual partners and current sexual partners. Nearly 700 (n=697) surveys were completed from selected undergraduate students during the spring semester of 2011. According to the findings, there was statistically significant positive relationship between attitudes toward sexting, subjective norms toward sexting, sexting behavioral intentions, and sexting behaviors. Also, attitudes toward sexting, subjective norms toward sexting, and sexting behavioral intentions were found to predict lifetime sexting behaviors, with behavioral intentions as the strongest predictor sexting behaviors. For non-sexters, there was statistically significant positive relationship between attitudes toward sexting, subjective norms toward sexting, and sexting behavioral intentions. Attitudes and subjective norms toward sexting are both found to be predictors of behavioral intentions to sext for lifetime and current non-sexters, with attitudes toward sexting being the strongest predictor of sexting behavioral intentions. Future research on sexting should go even further in depth to help explain reasons for sexting as well as reasons for not sexting. Also, future research should explore the benefits of sexting among consensual adults, paying particular attention to how sexting is used for sexual communication and sexual assertiveness. Recommendations for the profession of health education and health educators focused on preventing negative consequences of underage sexting, and promoting the benefits of sexting among consenting adults in relationships with mutual respect for each other.

This thesis is an analysis of Sextus Empiricus’ Against the Grammarians – a skeptical treatise on language written almost twenty centuries ago. In addressing this important chapter in the history of linguistic ideas, the study aims more broadly at the understanding of the relationship between language and skepticism. It is thus specially responsive to a contemporary scenario, where the virtues of language to promote understanding and communication are systematically placed under suspicion – in the arts in general, as well as in a significant part of the theoretical reflections in human and social sciences. Assuming that the examination of one of the remotest manifestations of skeptical thought about language may help understanding this contemporary scenario, this research was guided by the following questions: (i) what perspective(s) on language inform(s) Sextus Empiricus’s arguments in Against the Grammarians?; and (ii) what aspects of language fall under skeptical doubt in this treatise? The ancient text was thus interrogated by means of a deliberately anachronic strategy: our analysis took contemporary perspectives of language as points of reference - views that inflamed philosophical debate after the so-called linguistic turn, and can roughly be distributed between a pragmatic and a representationalist perspective. Since the dispute assumes quite different inflections according to the authors one has in mind, we have opted to focus on the manifestation of this debate within the philosophy of L. Wittgenstein, notably by taking as references the opposing voices that come into dialogue in his Philosophical Investigations. A first conclusion of this study is that two proto-images of language coexist within the argumentative web of Against he Grammarians, views that parallel the representationalist and the pragmatic contemporary stances. Another conclusion is that, in this ancient treatise, skeptical doubt falls over the idea that language has an intrinsic order, but not over language’s practical and day-to-day virtues.

It is well known that the general polynomial a_n*x^n + a_{n-1}*x^{n-₋¹} + ... + a₁x + a_0 cannot be solved algebraically for n ≥ 5; that is, it cannot be solved in terms of a finite number of arithmetic operations and radicals. We can, however, associate every irreducible sextic polynomial with a Galois group. The Galois group of a given polynomial can give us a great deal of information about the nature of the roots of a polynomial and it can also tell us if the polynomial itself is algebraically solvable. This leads to the typical problem in Galois theory: finding the Galois group of a given polynomial. In this thesis, we investigate the inverse problem: for a specific Galois group, what irreducible polynomials occur. More specifically, we look at monic trinomials - polynomials with only three terms, having 1 as the leading coeficient. The first unresolved case of trinomials are of degree six and we will look specifically at trinomials of the form x⁶ + ax + b. We begin by investigating families of these trinomials that will result in Galois groups having a particular structure. From these families of trinomials, we can then make a final determination of individual Galois groups after eliminating any reducible possibilities. In the main calculations of this thesis, we investigate two parametric families of trinomials, one of which is given in [1]. From these families we completely characterize five of the possible sixteen Galois groups that can occur for sextic polynomials. In the notation of Butler and Mckay [2], these groups are 6T1, 6T2, 6T4, 6T5, and 6T6. In the final determination of these polynomials, rational points are found on genus 2 curves using a method known as elliptic Chabauty. We give an introduction to Galois theory followed by a brief explanation of the methods used to attain our results. We then discuss our results and proceed to prove them through the use of powerful software such as MAPLE (tm) and the Magma algebra system [3].

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this thesis I try to answer the question of what attitude the ancient sceptics had towards the notion of belief. I concern myself exclusively with Pyrrhonic scepticism, as it was described by Sextus Empiricus in his book Pyrrhoniai hypotyposeis. Pyrrhonic scepticism was an epistemological system with ethical ramifications, that questioned most of the conventional wisdom of the time, I begin by evaluating two infleuntial readings, by Michael Frede and Casey Perin. I then go on to make my own assessment. Ultimately, I show why Frede's view is the more plausible; the sceptics allowed themselves to hold beliefs about reality, not just appearance.

Full text
Abstract:
How can skepticism be reconciled with the preservation of appearances? Either skepticism denies appearances thereby making itself impossible to formulate or to live by; or the preservation of appearances leads to some dogmatism that denies skepticism. The first chapter of this thesis shows that Sextus Empiricus treats conflicting appearances as the fundamental problem of philosophy: appearances are what we must judge to be true or false. The second chapter explains how, in his texts, philosophies denying that appearances could lead to truth —such as nihilism, relativism or intellectualism— are refuted by self-reversal and the fact that appearances are the first things to be known. Conversely, the third chapter follows Sextus's demonstration that defending the truth-value of appearances —either by a philosophy of common sense, or through a reduction to private affections, or even in a more refined manner as in Epicurian sensualism— also leads to a dead-end. Moreover, the fourth chapter demonstrates that, according to him, the intermediate way, which makes a distinction between true and false appearances, is impossible too, firstly because of the aporias caused by the dualism of sensation and thought, secondly because we are unable to distinguish between conflicting appearances, and thirdly because of the relativity of circumstances in which we apprehend things. The last chapter concludes from Sextus that skepticism is the necessary consequence of the epistemological principles admitted by every philosopher and that by preventing thought from attributing truth to appearances; it leads to a strictly practical criterion, thereby dissolving the conflict between appearances

Abstract:
This thesis has as its focus five argumentative modes that lie at the heart of Sextus Empiricus’ Outlines of Pyrrhonism. They are the modes of disagreement, hypothesis, infinite regression, reciprocity and relativity. They are analysed, individually, in the first five chapters of the thesis (one mode per chapter) and, collectively, in the sixth. The first four chapters deal, respectively, with the modes of disagreement, hypothesis, infinite regression and reciprocity. They distinguish between two versions of these modes: “dogmatic versions”, on the basis of which a dogmatic philosopher, who holds some theoretical beliefs, might reach a sceptical conclusion; and “sceptical versions”, on the basis of which a sceptical philosopher, who lacks all theoretical beliefs, might do so. It is argued that scholars such as Jonathan Barnes have offered reconstructions of these modes which are dogmatic in the sense just described, and alternative sceptical versions of the modes are presented. A stand-alone fifth chapter offers an analysis of a stand-alone mode - the mode of relativity. It argues that there are in fact three different modes of relativity at play in the Outlines, that only one of them is non-trivial, and that the non-trivial version is incompatible with the mode of disagreement. The sixth and final chapter offers an analysis of how the modes (excluding relativity) are meant to work in combination with one another. Four different combinations are presented and it is argued that all of them are underscored by a variety of theoretical assumptions, which a sceptic, who lacks all theoretical beliefs, cannot make. The ultimate conclusion of the thesis is that, though the sceptic can deploy the various modes individually (by means of exercising his particular sceptical ability), he is not able to systematise them into a net by means of which he might trap his dogmatic opponent. Unless specified otherwise, translations are based on Annas, J., and Barnes, J., Sextus Empiricus: Outlines of Scepticism (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2000).

Six mots.

The lyric sextine is the symbol of the meeting of the knowledges, the common roots to sciences henceforth distant and separated in spheres of specific skills. This study suggests finding, recognizing intuitively this common sense of membership between music, mathematics and poetry running over the tracks of the history of the lyric sextine, its transformations and the other forms of approaches, by questioning on the mechanisms which are integral part of the training of the word as sound, and on the way this sound is transformed into sign, how this sign becomes again sound, the number symbol, shape, rhythm. To finish comes the proposition and the study of a new variant of the lyric sextine in a project for realization of a show proposed in the form of research experience

Abstract:

Waugh, Shane Gordon. "Betwixt a false reason and none at all: Pyrrhonian lessons on common sense and natural commitment." University of Sydney, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/5445.

Full text
Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy
This dissertation argues that if we are to respect the common sense perspective then Pyrrhonian scepticism can be neither avoided nor defeated. While Pyrrhonian scepticism can be diagnosed it cannot be cured, at least, so long as we take a non-revisionary attitude towards common sense. The fundamental reason for this is that Pyrrhonian scepticism derives from the application of norms of inquiry that constitute part of the content of common sense in unusual but not fanciful or impossible situations. Implicit in this dissertation is a distinction between Cartesian and Pyrrhonian scepticisms, and for present purposes these two scepticisms can be distinguished on two criteria. First, unlike Cartesian scepticism, Pyrrhonian scepticism is not global in its doubts. It is not global because it does not attempt to question our entitlement to entire domains of commitment, for instance commitments to anything beyond the content of our perceptions, all at once. Nor does Pyrrhonism attempt to deny the possibility of knowledge. Rather, Pyrrhonian scepticism questions our entitlement to one commitment at a time and is hence iterative rather than global. This leads to the second far more interesting criterion in that unlike its Cartesian cousin Pyrrhonian scepticism claims not to be revisionary of the common sense perspective. In fact Pyrrhonian scepticism represents itself as the common sense perspective under special conditions. On this reading Pyrrhonian scepticism is a form of common sense scepticism. The claim that Pyrrhonian scepticism is commonsensical calls for a clarification of in what exactly the common sense perspective consists, and its relationship to scepticism. Of particular interest in this regard is a position that has been called Common Sense Naturalism (CSN). CSN consists, in part, in three important claims. First, that we are constrained, both logically and psychologically, to take ourselves to have an entitlement to common sense. Second, that because we are thus constrained, we have an entitlement to those commitments that constitute the content of common sense. Third, that the content of common sense is inherently anti-sceptical. These three claims jointly warrant Page 5 Page 6 the conclusion that appeals to commitments to which we are commonsensically entitled can feature prominently in refutations of scepticism. I argue that CSN is incorrect in that even if we have an entitlement to our common sense commitments we have an equally valid entitlement to Pyrrhonian scepticism, as Pyrrhonian scepticism can be derived from the common sense perspective itself. I also argue that CSN is correct but misleading in suggesting that we are constrained, both logically and psychologically, to take ourselves to have an entitlement to the content of common sense. CSN is correct in that we are always forced to take ourselves to be entitled to some commonsensical commitments but overlooks the fact that the content of these commitments varies, becoming at times amenable to Pyrrhonian scepticism. In fact what we take to be commonsensical is sensitive to our mood at the time. This can be used to explain that feature of the phenomenology of scepticism according to which Pyrrhonian scepticism is a recurrent but not a constant problem. Presenting these arguments requires both that the nature of CSN be clarified (chapter 1), that the relationship between common sense and Pyrrhonian scepticism be established (Chapter 2). Finally, we must also provide an account of the content of common sense be given (Chapter 3) which provides warrant for continued inquisitive activities even after the emergence of Pyrrhonian scepticism from within common sense.

Abstract:
Recently, sexting has gained popularity in both popular press and academic publications. Despite the prevalence of this communicative behavior, there is limited research that focuses on a theoretical explanation as well as how it can potentially enhance relationships. The purpose of this dissertation was threefold: to utilize the multiple goals theoretical perspective to examine sender goals when sexting, to assess if multiple goals within sexting was associated with relational behaviors and outcomes, and to develop a reliable and valid scale for sexting goals. A two-phase study was implemented. In phase 1, participants provided actual sexting messages they had recently sent to another person, and also provided their goal when they sent that particular message. Participants also answered scales related to relationship, communication, and sexual satisfaction, affectionate communication, and relational maintenance behaviors. Analytic coding was utilized for the open-ended responses regarding message content and goals, and the researcher also used the responses to develop participant- and theoretically-driven scales. Nine themes were identified for the type of goal participants had when sending sext messages. For phase 2, the proposed scale for the multiple goals of sexting was added to the preexisting survey. The researcher coded 204 sexting messages provided by participants as instrumental, relational, or identity goals and conducted multiple regressions to assess how the type of goal influenced each of the five relational outcomes. Multiple regressions revealed no significant associations among multiple goals and outcomes. Finally, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis was used to assess the proposed scale for the multiple goals of sexting. The EFA revealed a four-factor solution and the CFA demonstrated factorial validity for the scale. Post hoc analysis revealed significant associations for the goals from the scale and the relational outcomes. The results of this dissertation demonstrate that multiple goals are utilized in the context of sexting, and that specific goals are important for relational outcomes.

Meyer, Melissa Isabella. "Let's talk about sext : gendered millennial perceptions of sexting in a cyborg society." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/20774.

Full text
Abstract:
In a cyborg society where people exist both organically and via technology, sexual expression and interaction via technology has become 'normal'. The controversy surrounding sexting stems from contemporary literature and media portraying it as coercive, harmful and unacceptable, with particular reference to young females. Qualitative data on this phenomenon is extremely limited and biased, potentially resulting in unjust limitations and restrictions. This study investigates Millennial sexting behaviour by considering general and gendered perceptions of sexting to better understand the phenomenon; its risks, benefits, and the practice itself. An exploratory mixed methods study amongst university students (N = 579) revealed expected and unexpected findings. Respondents acknowledged sexting's risks, while the benefits of and motivations for sexting were emphasised with little evidence of negative pressure. It is argued that the benefits of sexting greatly outweigh the potential risks, but moreover, that sexting is a primarily feminist practice that holds much promise. The need for sextual education and awareness of sext-consent is examined, as theoretical and policy implications are discussed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Recent work on the philosophy of G.W.F. Hegel has emphasized his interest in skeptical concerns. These contemporary scholars argue that, despite common opinions to the contrary, Hegel actually had a very keen interest in skepticism, one that informed and motivated much of his overall project. While I welcome this recent literature, I argue here that contemporary scholars have overemphasized the importance of skepticism for Hegel. By looking closely at Hegel’s arguments against skepticism in the Phenomenology of Spirit, I argue that Hegel’s anti-skeptical arguments are in fact major failures. Hegel’s failure is at odds with the emphasis that contemporary literature places on Hegel’s interests in skepticism. For a philosopher who was supposedly centrally concerned with skeptical issues, Hegel sure does not act like it. I conclude that the tension here is the result of contemporary scholars’ overemphasis of the role that skepticism plays in Hegel’s project.

Setty, Emily. "Sexting ethics in youth digital cultures : risk, shame and the negotiation of privacy and consent." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2018. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/845577/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores young people’s perceptions and practices surrounding ‘youth sexting’, particularly regarding privacy and consent. Youth sexting – involving the production and exchange of sexual images or messages via mobile phones and other communication technologies – has attracted media attention, public concern, and research and policy focus for some time, particularly regarding the perceived harmful nature of the practice (Crofts et al., 2015). This thesis situates harmful practices in terms of breaches of privacy and consent. The research is used to advocate for progressive, harm-reduction approaches to responding to youth sexting that centralise ethics, justice and equality, and give rights to sexual and bodily expression and exploration, as well as freedom from harm. Group and one-to-one interviews with young people revealed narratives of individualism and responsibilisation regarding harmful sexting practices. Intertwined were moralising discourses about harm-avoidance, which underpinned a demarcation of deserving and undeserving victims, and promoted victim-blaming. Analyses revealed however, that risk and harm was not inherent to sexting and was shaped by norms and standards surrounding gender and sexuality, and local peer group dynamics and hierarchies. The designation of some forms of bodily and sexual expression as shameful and illegitimate shaped harmful practices and were incorporated into young people’s self-concepts in ways that both reproduced and resisted established systems of meaning. The findings suggest that rather than being caused by technology, youth sexting should be understood as a complex, negotiated practice situated within young people’s peer, digital, relational, and sexual cultures. The thesis explores young people’s perspectives on addressing youth sexting, and concludes by emphasising the need to disrupt and challenge the meanings underpinning shame and stigma, and the responsibilisation of individuals to deal with inequality and harm.

Abstract:
Developments in technology have changed the way we do everything; advanced our research capabilities, enhanced our communication abilities and speeds, even the way people commit crimes. It provides perpetrators with a new way to commit traditional crimes as well as new forms of crime. One of the many opportunities involved with increased communication devices is known as sexting. Adolescent sexting has received national and local attention due to possible long-term implications such as registering as a sex offender and even suicide. Sexting, which is considered an antisocial behavior among adolescents, has progressively become implicated in peer pressure as well. Peer pressure causes individuals to commit cruel acts or crimes in which they normally would not do because they are forced, or feel obligated to do so, by their peers. Further study into peer pressure and sexting is needed to discover if peer pressure and opportunity are the reasons why adolescents engage in sexting. To discover this, I surveyed college undergraduate students to determine the causes behind their sexting habits in high school.

Kroff, Savannah Leigh. ""Love on the Brain":? Exploring the Influence of Lyrics on Sexting and Risky Sexual Behavior." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2018. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/7330.

Abstract:
While some research has been done on the influence of music lyrics on sexual behaviors in general, none has explored the lyrical influence on sexting. The goal of the current study is to explore the longitudinal influence of sexual and sexually objectifying lyrics on adolescent sexting behaviors. Participants were 125 14-year-old adolescents who were recruited from high schools in Texas. Participants completed questionnaires on music preferences, sexual behaviors and impulsivity and were given BlackBerry devices through which frequency of sexual text message utterances was obtained. Music preferences were then quantitatively analyzed using the Linguistic Inquiry Word Count (LIWC) software. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to explore the influence of both sexual and sexually objectifying lyrics on sexting behavior. Additionally, biological sex and impulsivity were explored as moderators. Analyses revealed that 40.65% of adolescents participated in some form of sexting at Time 3 (42.81% at Time 1) but that music lyrics had little direct influence on sexting. However, biological sex appeared to moderate the relationship between sexual lyrics and sexting such that males were much more likely to participate in sexting when exposed to sexual lyrics where females were not. These and other results are discussed as well as implications for parents and the need for further research on sexting and the behavioral influence of musical lyrics.

Abstract:
This undergraduate project carried out within the scope of the Degree in Criminology of the Fernando Pessoa University deals with the theme of the use of social networks by minors and their consequent risks. In a society increasingly oriented towards new information technologies, it is important to highlight the growing phenomenon of online social networks, which in a way influence the way of life of each individual. The Social Networks, seen as factors of acculturation and socialization, are thus widely used by minors and adolescents, and these are exposed to several risks that need to be analyzed. In the first part of this project will be carried out the literature review regarding the use of the internet and social networks where it will be possible to identify the risks that present higher prevalence such as Cyberbullying, Cyberstalking and Sexting. In the second, an empirical study is presented with a research project that will focus on the application of questionnaires by inquiry in two schools composed of groups from grades 5th to 12th degree, to reach the age range between 10 and 17 years. With this methodology, it’s intended to: assess the habits of minors related to the use of the Internet; verify the prevalence of parental follow-up; to verify the existence of possible victims in the mentioned risks, and if the existing information on the subject will be adequate.
