Abstract:

Biological factors that determine sex and drive sexual differentiation have long been established in humans and other mammalian species. Yet there is a limited understanding of the mechanisms by which these factors give rise to sex-biased outcomes in health and disease. Growing evidence for sex differences in preclinical and clinical studies has led to research funding regulations that require clinical studies and drug trials to account for sex as a biological variable. This new wave of interest in sex differences is focused on three aspects: First, what factors show quantitative sex differences at the molecular and cellular levels, and how are they regulated, over the course of a lifetime, by the classic sex-biasing factors, i.e., genes encoded on the sex chromosomes and sex steroid hormones secreted by gonads. Second, can we utilize knowledge of sex differences (e.g., sex-biased gene expression) gained from studying model animals to generate and test hypotheses regarding these sex-driven variables in a multitude of biological functions of interest. Third, can we translate basic knowledge of sex differences into new therapeutic targets/strategies that alleviate sex-biased outcomes in common diseases, developing sex-specific treatments or extending sex-biased protection from one sex to the other. In this thesis, I will first review the fundamental causes of sex differences and the classical strategies used to study sex-biased phenotypes. Next, I will introduce existing mice models (i.e., the "Four-Core-Genotype", XY* and Sex Chromosome Trisomy models) that aid in delineating the effects of sex hormones and sex chromosomes on sex differences. Finally, I will highlight the insights gained from recent studies using these mouse models and discuss the need for a "systems approach" in future studies of sex differences. (276 words.)

Conrad, Linda Muriel. "Sex-role orientation and sex stereotyping influences on same- and cross-sex friendships." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26386.

Abstract:
This study was designed to investigate the influence of two individual difference variables--sex-role orientation and level of sex stereotyping—on the quality of people's own same- and opposite-sex friendships, and their attitudes toward same- and opposite-sex friendships in general. It was predicted that androgynous individuals would experience the highest quality in their friendships, followed by the sex-typed and undifferentiated. Level of stereotyping was predicted to influence both the quality of peoples' friendships, and their evaluations of the concepts same- and opposite-sex friendships. High-sex stereotyped persons were expected to have lower quality friendships and have less favorable attitudes toward cross-sex friendships compared with the low stereotyped. One hundred and one adults (62 females, 39 males) sampled from the City of Vancouver completed a series of questions designed to tap the quality of their same-and cross-sex friendships, and their attitudes toward sairie-and cross-sex friendships. The Bern Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI, Bern, 1974) was used to measure sex typing (androgynous, sex-typed, undifferentiated) and an instrument developed by the author was used to test level of sex stereotyping. As predicted, androgyny was related to better quality friendships. Androgynous individuals had significantly higher quality scores than either sex-typed or undifferentiated persons. Quality scores were not significantly different for sex-typed individuals compared with undifferentiated. These findings were interpreted in terms of the greater behavioral flexibility associated with androgyny. Although not predicted, sex typing was also a significant factor in evaluations of friendships and attitudes toward cross-sex friendships specifically. Androgynous individuals gave significantly higher evaluations to friendships and were more accepting of cross-sex friendships than persons in the other two sex-role orientation groups. In light of this finding a modification was made to the original theoretical framework to account for sex typing effects on evaluations of friendships. None of the predictions for level of sex stereotyping influences on quality and evaluation of friendships was supported. Psychometric problems with the measures used in the present study may have contributed to these non-significant findings. Other findings showed same-sex friendships received significantly higher quality ratings than cross-sex and same-sex friendships received more positive evaluations compared with opposite-sex friendships, although these latter findings were non-significant.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study examined the relationship between sex, sex role and expression of depression. The Beck Depression Inventory, The Bem Sex Role Inventory, and the Inventory of Depressive Behaviors were administered to 589 college students. Sex differences in the expression of depression were similar to the findings of previous studies. Sex role differences in the expression of depression were found. Masculine sex role was related to expressive coping strategies along with instrumental strategies. Feminine sex role was related to behavioral and cognitive coping along with more expressive behaviors. The variance in expression of depression accounted for by sex was only partially accounted for by sex role. Undifferentiated individuals were significantly more depressed than Masculine, Feminine or Androgynous individuals, but there were no differences between the latter three groups. Thus, either masculinity or femininity appears to be associated with lower levels of depression.

Abstract:
I’ve studied and tried to investigate why thepackaging of sex toys look like they do, andin the process I’ve also researched how theirvisual communication is perceived and whatcould possibly be made better. The reasonfor this thesis is that my opinion of packagingin the sex toy industry is sexistic, offensiveand mainly consistent of bad design. I reviewliterature that I consider to be interesting forthe mission and it treats both the building ofbrands and packaging design. A survey andexpert interviews will also be presented. Finallythe design work gives an example of how aclean package design can be the answer forthe question of how one best communicatethe packaging of a sex toy.The study is not conclusive in the aspect that itdoesn’t provide an answer to why the packagesare designed the way they are, I do howeverelaborate on what some of the possibilitiesmight be. In the end I discuss the importanceof why a change must be made in this area ofpackaging design.

Abstract:
Previous research on academic dishonesty in colleges and universities has consistently shown unacceptable rates of cheating, yet inconsistent reports of sex differences in cheating. Sex differences in cheating were studied in relation to sex role orientation and attitudes towards cheating, and in light of a distinction between two types of cheating; cheating to benefit oneself and cheating to benefit another. 256 undergraduate students completed anonymous surveys to tap their sex role orientation, attitudes towards cheating, and reported frequency of cheating. Although females reported having more disapproving attitudes towards cheating than males, they reported engaging in cheating just as much as males. Sex role orientation was not directly related to cheating, but female-associated characteristics were related to attitudes towards cheating, which, in turn, were strongly related to cheating behavior. It was also found that participants reported engaging in more cheating to benefit another person than cheating to benefit themselves.

Brewis, Joanna Patricia. "Sex, work and sex at work : a Foucauldian analysis." Thesis, University of Manchester, 1996. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.530512.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis uses the work of Michel Foucault to analyse the three main knowledges around sex at work - scientific modernism, liberal feminist sexual harassment knowledge and re-eroticization knowledge. The main argument is that such knowledges can be identified as generating subjectifying power effects; that is to say. this thesis argues that modern human subjects are produced through the operations of prevailing power/ knowledge regimes such as those around sex at work. It is further suggested that the subject positions which these knowledges generate can, in line with Foucault's argument that 'everything is dangerous', be identified to have particular implications. A program of semi-structured interviews has been completed in a university and in a financial services company in order to assess how powerful each knowledge around sex at work has been with regard to subjects in the respondent group. Resistances to the knowledges were also catalogued. Acknowledgement is also made where appropriate of power effects of and resistances to these knowledges with regard to subjects in the wider social. Importantly, analysis is also offered of the implications of the subject positions identified; that is to say, of what it might mean for these men and women to understand themselves in these ways. This thesis therefore conforms to Foucault's recommendation that intellectual work should be used to subvert claims to truth and to reveal the effects of power so that subjects may begin the 'critical ontology' of themselves. This project of self rests on an awareness on the part of individual subjects that what that they know of themselves is nothing more, and nothing less, than the power effects of particular knowledges. Foucault suggests that this kind of relationship with self allows for a certain degree of self-fashioning - that we can come to be able to choose the ways in which we know ourselves. The concluding part of the thesis addresses the criticisms that have been made of this vision of a new form of subjectivity and, in so doing, clarifies the ethicopolitical contribution of the kind of Foucauldian analysis that has been attempted here.

High, Samantha. "Sex Determination in Zebrafish: Genetics of Sex and wnt4a." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/20462.

Abstract:
Effective reproduction is essential for species survival. Sexual reproduction depends upon functional gonads and reproductive ducts. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a popular model organism, but the genetic basis of zebrafish sex determination, gonad development, and reproductive tract development are not fully understood, and understanding this basis could inform about the evolutionary conservation of these genes and the use of zebrafish to investigate and treat reproductive diseases. In chapter I, I give a overview of sex determination systems, gonad development, and reproductive duct development in mammals and fish, and ask how sex is determined and how reproductive ducts develop in zebrafish. In chapter II, I used genome wide association studies (GWAS) to investigate if the genetic basis of sex determination in a variety of zebrafish strains -- two ‘wild-type’ strains cultured for about 30 years in the lab, and four ‘natural’ strains, wild-type strains isolated directly or recently from nature in India -- and identified a sex-associated region on zebrafish chromosome 4 in natural zebrafish strains that was lacking in the lab strains. In chapter III, I investigated whether or not wnt4a is important for zebrafish ovarian development, and found that wnt4a is expressed in the early bipotential gonad and that loss of wnt4a results in male-biased sex ratios, indicating that wnt4a is important for zebrafish ovarian development. In chapter IV, I investigated whether or not wnt4a is important for male reproductive duct development, and found that loss of wnt4a slows the formation of male reproductive ducts and prevents the male fused ducti deferens from connecting to the genital orifice in zebrafish males. Results further showed that wnt4a is expressed in tissue around the site where this connection should occur before and after the connection is formed, revealing a novel wnt4a phenotype in zebrafish that hasn’t been seen thus far, and indicating that wnt4a is necessary for proper male reproductive duct development in zebrafish. This dissertation contains both published and unpublished co-authored material.

Abstract:
This study was an observation of the public's knowledge and perceptions on sex offenders, sex offenses, and sex offender management policies. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from 282 students at East Tennessee State University. Along with the basic demographic variables, respondent's field of study was measured as a main independent variable. For example, it was hypothesized that students studying within the criminal justice field would hold more accurate beliefs concerning the sex offender population. Overall, the study proved to be statistically insignificant. Multivariate analysis did show, however, that certain demographic variables were more predictive in determining an individual's support towards sex offender management policies.

Abstract: The decision whether a bipotential gonad will become a testis or ovary is considered a critical stage in vertebrate sex determination. Administration of exogenous steroids can affect this plasticity by skewing the sex gonadal differentiation towards a male or female. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of 17β-estradiol (E2) diet on Astyanax altiparanae (lambari) development, focusing on the gonadal development and gene expression analysis of possible candidate genes involved in either male or female pathways. Larvae with undifferentiated gonads were fed with steroid diet containing different concentrations of E2 during 28 days, from the mouth opening until a period that precedes the gonadal differentiation. Animals were sampled at 90 days post-hatching (dhp) for histology and gene expression analysis. Our results showed that E2 disrupted both phenotypic and histological sex ratios, and surprisingly, induced intersex with testis-ova in the concentrations of 2 and 6 mg E2/Kg food. This data is a clear evidence that the treatment used was not enough to induce complete sex reversal in A. altiparanae. However, in terms of gene expression, E2 (6mg/Kg food) induced a remarkable gonadal plasticity between males and females at 90 dph. The males, named as E2 resistant males, overexpressed the male-biased genes, such as dmrt1, sox9 and amh. We suggested that these males were able to resist the E2-induced feminization by the expression of genes related to testis differentiat... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Jackson, Natalie. "Small set enumeration: the subitizing boundary, laterality and sex differences." Thesis, Jackson, Natalie (2000) Small set enumeration: the subitizing boundary, laterality and sex differences. Honours thesis, Murdoch University, 2000. https://researchrepository.murdoch.edu.au/id/eprint/1496/.

Full text
Abstract:
Previously, the ability to subitize (i.e. to immediately quantify a small set of items without counting) was thought to occur for sets of up to seven items and was explained using a developmental canonical pattern recognition approach. Unfortunately, this approach was unable to account for the ability to subitize linear or random arrays of items, thereby, inspiring a pattern learning and recognition (through stimulus repetition and systematic variation of a base pattern) approach. The latter approach, however, suggests that subitizing is not an independent psychological process and simply occurs as the result of pattern recognition. Contrary to this view, a recent study by Dehaene and Cohen (1994), employing a condition that did not introduce a pattern recognition confound and using a simultanagnosic patient sample, provided sound evidence to suggest that subitizing is, in fact, a separable psychological process. In addition, and importantly for past research into the localisation of subitizing within the hemispheres (which has usually involved the testing of larger sets), a subitizing boundary of two and possibly three items, much lower than originally expected, was found. Furthermore, and in contrast to previous research, recent evidence from Butterworth (1999), drawn from acalculic patients, has suggested that subitizing is a left hemisphere process. This possibility, in light of possible sex differences in laterality and the previous use of the lack of a right hemisphere advantage to indicate abnormal perceptual asymmetry, suggests some cause for concern. The present study was, thus, carried out in order to determine a subitizing boundary and to investigate the possibility of hemispheric and sex differences in laterality. As such, it provided the first comprehensive investigation into the ability to subitize using randomly generated and presented patterns, and a normal adult sample. A divided visual field task, involving the enumeration of purely random sets of between 2 and 5 items, randomly presented to the left and right visual fields, was employed. Thirty-two undergraduate psychology students (i.e. 16 male and 16 female subjects) volunteered to participate. Based on Dehaene and Cohen's (1994) results it was hypothesised that the subitizing boundary would occur at two and possibly three items. Furthermore, in line with Butterworth's hypothesis, the present study predicted that subitizing would show a left hemisphere advantage. Finally, based on previous research into performance on nonverbal visual tasks, a female subitizing advantage was expected. The results supported the first hypothesis, indicating a subitizing boundary of two items, thereby, extending Dehaene and Cohen's (1994) research using a normal sample. The second hypothesis, however, was not supported, with the results indicating a strong right hemisphere advantage for subitizing. Finally, the third hypothesis was not supported, with no sex differences found in the ability to subitize. These findings were considered both in the context of Butterworth's hypothesis and in the formation of number systems within remote hunter-gatherer societies. Future research involving young children and a cross-cultural perspective, were suggested.

Abstract:

Males and females may differ in stage-specific survival, maturation, fertility, or mating availability. These demographic differences, in turn, affect population growth rates, equilibrium structure, and evolutionary trajectories. Models considering only a single sex cannot capture these effects, motivating the use of demographic two-sex models for sexually reproducing populations. I developed a new two-sex modeling framework that incorporates population structure and multiple life cycle processes through transition rate matrices. These models can be applied to a variety of life histories to address both ecological and evolutionary questions. Here, I apply the model to the effects of sex-biased harvest on populations with various mating systems. Demographic considerations also affect evolutionary projections. I derived matrix calculus expressions for key evolutionary quantities in my two-sex models, including the invasion fitness, selection gradient, and second derivatives of growth rates (which have many applications, including the classification of evolutionary singular strategies). I used these quantities to analyze the evolution of the primary sex ratio, under various sex- and stage-specific offspring costs and maternal conditions. Demographic two-sex models lend insight into complex, and sometimes counterintuitive, results that are not captured by models lacking population structure. These findings highlight the importance of demographic structure in ecology and evolution.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The doctoral thesis “The Enumeration of Same-Sex Couples in Population Censuses: Three Essays on the Statistical Visibility and Spatial Segregation of Same-Sex Couples Across Societies” addresses a new and original problem: the statistical enumeration of same-sex couples (SSCs) in population censuses and other quantitative data sources. Its first chapter examines how censuses in specific countries in Europe, the Americas and Oceania currently capture this statistical enumeration through different methodologies, offering a comprehensive assessment of the methods used and an analysis of their advantages and disadvantages. Chapter two mines Brazil’s 2010 census data to reveal spatial settlement patterns among that country’s SSCs with a high degree of geographical precision. A multilevel regression allows for spatial analysis of the prevalence of SSCs down to the subdistrict-level for the municipalities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Chapter three consists two parts: the first concentrates on the statistical visibility of SSCs in Germany (divided geographically into federal states), based on the country’s annual microcensus; the second focuses on a comprehensive spatial segregation analysis of SSCs in the city-state of Berlin, based on Germany’s full census conducted in 2011. This introduces a high level of geographical detail to the study which is reinforced by the availability of statistical data on the prevalence of civil unions, a legal institution that is available only to SSCs in Germany.

This paper aimed at clarifying what heterosexual men and women understand by sex without commitment. Motivations, attitudes and behaviors associated with this practice were considered as categories of analysis representative of the phenomenon. The theoretical basis is that of Analytical Psychology. The quantitative method was used. The research instrument was a self-completion questionnaire distributed and applied via the internet. The study was attended by 74 women and 61 men aged between 30 and 50 years old, that have completed at least the high school and belong to the social middle class. The analysis of the results showed that, in respect to sex without commitment, men and women share the desire for encounter and pleasure. However, women expectations for the continuity of the relationship differ significantly from those of men. Men tend to seek only transitory relationships significantly more than women. The female participants, in turn, have demonstrated an ambivalence regarding the experience of sex without commitment by stating that they do not create expectations of a stable relationship and at the same time responding that even in casual sex they seek affection sharing and the continuity of the relationship. In addition, the responses of the female group showed a significantly greater involvement with the partner than the male group. The presence of a double standard with respect to social expectations related to each gender was identified. However, even if some traditional roles remain, the results showed adults that signal a change in gender relations favorable to the free expression of a sexuality modulated according to the expectations of contemporaneity

Abstract:

Males and females differ in morphology and behaviour, so that selection acts differently on the two sexes. This changes the relative reproductive success of males and females, and it is beneficial for parents to bias the sex ratio of their broods in favour of the sex with the best survival and breeding prospects. Differences between the sexes and brood sex ratio in Tengmalm’s owl (Aegolius funereus) in northern Sweden were investigated, using a molecular sexing technique based on PCRamplification of sex-linked CHD1 genes. Among owls caught during autumn migration, females were commoner than males, especially within juveniles. However, in contrast to earlier studies, it was shown that adult males sometimes undertake migratory movements indicatory of nomadism. Measurements of these owls revealed that sexual size dimorphism in Tengmalm’s owl is not as great as previously reported from studies carried out during the breeding season. Females were slightly larger (4% by mass) than males, probably owing to the different roles of males and females during breeding, when this dimorphism is greater. The size difference between male and female nestlings was found to be similar to that for adults in autumn, and to investigate whether this led to differential mortality, the effect of supplementary feeding on mortality of male and female nestlings was studied. Supplementary feeding reduced male mortality when vole abundance was low, and it was concluded that larger female nestlings out-competed their smaller brothers, who then suffered increased mortality when food was scarce. Recruitment of male nestlings into the breeding population declined with decreasing food supply at the time of fledging, a pattern not observed in females. Juvenile males were therefore more vulnerable to food shortage than females, both in the nest and after fledging. Mean brood sex ratio varied significantly among years characterized by different phases of the vole cycle and associated vole abundance. Broods were male-biased (63% males) in a year when the food supply was favourable during spring and summer, neutral (50%) in a year with an intermediate food supply, and female-biased (35% males) in a year when food was in short supply. Parents appeared to adaptively adjust the sex ratio of their broods according to the relative mortality risk and reproductive potential of sons and daughters.

Abstract:
This study compares same-sex friendships, cross-sex friendships and romantic relationships in young adulthood in terms of the negative effects of various conflict issues, the different conflict management strategies and relationship maintenance strategies employed in these relationships, as well as the perceived rewards and costs, the integration of the networks, and perceived overall quality. The main purpose is to investigate cross-sex friendships and discern its similarities to and differences from romantic relationships and same-sex friendships, as well as the gender differences that emerge. Data is collected by means of questionnaires, from a sample of 298 Middle East Technical University Students. Cross-sex friendships were rated as the poorest relationship in terms of quality, rewards/costs, or the frequency of maintenance behaviors and conflict occurred at very low levels in these friendships. Women employed more relationship maintenance strategies in their same- and cross-sex friendships compared to men. In addition, men preferred the dominating and women the accommodating strategies of conflict management in their same-sex friendships. It was concluded that same-sex friendships remain to be the accepted and approved form of friendship among this sample of Turkish young adults and cross-sex friendships were distant and inferior to the other two relationships. Finally, there were some differences across these relationships as to what predicted relational quality, yet in general the rewards and maintenance strategies predicted quality better than costs and conflict behaviors

Abstract:
People engage in sex for a wide variety of reasons and these reasons can differ depending on the individual, his or her partner, and on the context of the sexual encounter. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine how sexual attraction and sexual orientation, of both self and partner, affect an individual’s reasons to engage in sex, or sexual motivation. Three studies were conducted to explore these effects from both the individual’s and the partner’s perspective. In Study 1, individual attitudes toward having casual sex, dating, and being in a committed relationship with a bisexual partner of the other gender were examined in a sample of 720 men and women. Participants reported negative attitudes toward having these relationships and more negative attitudes were reported as the commitment level of the considered relationship increased. Women also reported more negative attitudes and greater insecurity toward relationships than men. In Study 2, the psychometric properties of a comprehensive research tool, the Why Have Sex? (YSEX?) questionnaire to use in Study 3 for the study of sexual motivation were evaluated in a sample of 146 women with same-sex attraction. Overall, the reliability of this scale was excellent for casual sex motivations and motivations for sex in committed relationships with female partners. In Study 3, motivations for sex and the effects of relationship context, sexual attraction, and the gender of one’s partner were explored in a sample of 510 women including women with same-sex attraction and women with exclusively heterosexual attraction. Results of this study showed that relationship context had the largest effect on sexual motivation; physical motivations were more strongly endorsed for casual sex while emotional motivations were more strongly endorsed for sex in committed relationships. No effect of sexual attraction was reported. Further, no effect of gender of partner was reported by sexual minority women. The results of this dissertation have important implications for the study of sexual motivation, specifically as it relates to sexual attraction and orientation. Motivations for sex are likely to be affected by an individual’s attitudes and perceptions of his or her partner’s sexual orientation and associated stereotypes. In addition, the type of sexual relationship and associated level of commitment had strong, differential effects on sexual motivation. This is a novel finding as the context of the sexual relationship has not previously been considered with respect to individual motivations for sex. Henceforth, studies on sexual motivation need to be more contextualized and include more comprehensive assessments of individuals to increase the validity of findings and demonstrate the complex variation of human sexual motivation.

Abstract:
Aedes aegypti is one of the most important mosquito vectors of human disease, transmitting dengue, Chikungunya and yellow fever viruses. New control methods are much needed for this species and an ability to skew sex ratios toward males would be very useful for a number of strategies. In this study, male-specific chromosomal regions were searched for in Ae. aegypti using novel approaches such as microdissection of chromosomes. The sex determination pathway of Ae. aegypti was also explored, using Drosophila melanogaster as a model, to find candidate genes that could be used to induce male biased sex ratios. The transformer-2 (tra-2) gene is necessary for sexual differentiation of females in D. melanogaster, but its role remains unknown in mosquitoes. A homolog of tra-2 was identified in Ae. aegypti. Rapid Amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) experiments were conducted to characterize this gene in Ae. aegypti. The Ae. aegypti tra-2 gene, as for D. melanogaster, was highly variable in transcription due to alternative splicing and alternative polyadenylation, with 9 different variants identified. RNA interference (RNAi) was then used to determine if knockdown of all variants of Ae. aegypti tra-2 can be achieved and if it would cause gender switching in individuals, initially by means of direct injection of double stranded RNA, and then progressing to germline transformation. A construct designed to produce tra-2 dsRNA was injected into Ae. aegypti embryos and integrated into the Ae. aegypti genome. The transgenic population showed up to 100% male bias in single pair crosses. The male bias effect could still be seen in the heterozygous population. The results suggest that knockdown of tra-2 could provide a useful tool for sex ratio distortion as part of the development of novel control methods for Ae. aegypti.

Abstract:
This thesis explores social practices, policies and laws constituting criminal and social justice approaches to providing services and amenities for the sex trafficked females in Jordan. As the discussion of sex trafficked females overlaps with sex workers, this research explores the human rights of both groups who experience different forms of gender-based violence. To understand the protection, care and support that Jordan provides, I interviewed seven service providers offering protection for victims of sex trafficking. Also, I analysed the semiprohibitionist Jordanian Penal Code and the Human Trafficking Legislation that criminalise sex trafficking perpetrators and sex-related actions. This research relies on insights from intersectionality theory to enquire into how better to protect and support women who face intersecting social disadvantages and the threat of honour-based killing that impede them from accessing social and criminal justice. This thesis explores three themes, cultural context, feminism and human rights, and argues for social justice for sex trafficked victims and sex workers including those who neither want to exit sex work nor raise a complaint to the administrators of criminal justice. This thesis found that sex trafficked victims and sex workers were not offered appropriate assistance as the service providers were disempowered. It also found that failure to understand honour and morality reinforces the stereotyping of sex workers.

This paper consists of one research review and two quantitative studies about men and transgender persons who sell sexual services to other men.The first part presents research about men who sell sexual services to men in general, and around the need for prevention against hiv and STIs in particular. Part two is an analysis of men who sell sexual services and their attitude and practice regarding safer sex. The analysis is based on material from the MSM (Men who have sex with Men) survey conducted in 2006. This study shows that Men who sell sex have significantly higher risk-behavior than other men who have sex with men. This indicates the need for HIV prevention in the group of men who sell sexual services.Part two of this study consists a descriptive internet survey made among men and transgender people who sell sexual services on the internet. The background for this study is that Swedish official documents repeatedly reproduce the notion that men who sell sex are invisible, and that there is no knowledge of the subject. This study shows that this is not the case. The study shows that advertising is visible and that it is possible to find people who offer their services relatively easily. This paper also includes a descriptive study about the geographic origin, age, sexual orientation, available services, safer sex, and marketing area of men and transgender personswho sell sexual services on the Internet.

Bonnell, Karen. "Communication Barriers Between Teenagers & Parents About Sex & Sex-Related Topics: A Survey of Teenagers in Sex Education Class." TopSCHOLAR®, 1990. https://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/2166.

Abstract:
Public concern about teenage pregnancy and the threat of sexually transmitted diseases like AIDS make sex education information vital for today's teenagers. A 1986 Harris survey of 1,000 teenagers cited parents as their primary source of sex education information, but 42% said they would be too nervous or afraid to bring up the subject of contraception or birth control with their parents. States like Kentucky have mandated sex education courses for all public schools to provide necessary instruction for teenagers. This study identifies communication barriers which teenagers say prevent communication with their parents about sex and sex-related topics. Questionnaires were administered to 249 high school sex education students. The majority of teenagers (71%) said they could communicate freely with their parents about most topics, but only half (52%) said they could communicate freely with their parents about sex or sex-related topics. Thirty percent of the teenagers said they could not talk comfortably with their mothers about sex as compared to 47% who said they could not talk with their fathers. Results showed gender differences in the ability to talk with fathers about sex. Fifty-eight percent of the females reported closed communication with fathers about sex topics as compared to 33 percent of males. Teenagers cited 13 main reasons why they could not talk with their parents about sex or sex-related topics: embarrassment (20%), poor communication in general (11%), different values about sex and dating (11%), avoidance of conflict (10%), teenager chooses not to discuss it with parents (10%), it's a topic simply not discussed (9%), parents might accuse them of being sexually active (7%), parents think they are too young (5%), they are too busy to talk about it (5%), parents don't want to discuss it (4%), parents are overprotective (4%), teenager is not close to parents (3%), and parents wouldn't understand (2%). Items which teenagers say would make it more comfortable to discuss sex topics with parents include: parents being more understanding, non-accusing, not embarrassed, willing to listen, closer in age, less old fashioned, more informed about today's teens, open minded and less judgmental.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Women who trade sex for drugs or money, a practice known as sex trading, are at risk for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. This holds true even when controlling for such behaviors as crack use, and history of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The purpose of this study was to explain differences among women who sex trade for drugs, money, both or neither. Participants were recruited by programs operated by the Center for Behavioral Research and Services (CBRS). The Risk Behavior Assessment (RBA), Barratt Impulsivity Scale (BIS), Eysenck Impulsiveness Scale (EIS), Displaced Aggression Questionnaire (DAQ), and Compulsive Sexual Behavior Inventory (CSBI) were administered to participants. A Generalized Logit model was created and the model included crack use, amphetamine use, impulsivity, and race. Displaced aggression and compulsive sexual behavior were found to be associated with sex trading. This study may help prevention specialists address specific issues unique to those who sex trade.

Abstract:
With the progression of multivariate statistics, the creation of population specific equations is on the rise. Multivariate analysis generally revolves around metric methods or geometric morphometrics, not on morphoscopic features. A total of eight samples were analysed spanning from prehistoric American to modern day South African and ranged between pygmy populations from the Andaman Islands to medieval British populations. With a sample size of more than 1100 individuals, each os coxa was scored using eight morphoscopic features most commonly used by physical anthropologists and osteoarchaeologists. Trait frequencies were compiled and compared between each of the eight samples. Then, the samples were placed into two groups: a known age and sex group (Christ Church Spitalfields, South African White, South African Black, and South African Coloured), and an unknown archaeological group (Poulton, St. Owens, Chumash, and Andaman). When comparing trait frequencies, slight differences between the samples could be seen. Ordinal Logistic Regressions (OLR) were applied onto each of the four samples from the known age and sex group to create population specific sexing equations (cross-validated). Results from these four equations ranged from 90.24% (South African Black population specific equation) to 96.38% (Christ Church, Spitalfields population specific equation). Population specifity was tested by applying all of the equations onto each sample in this group. In an attempt to reduce this, two new equations were created by combining samples together resulting in a South African specific equation (92.54% accuracy) and a "Summary Sex" equation (92.98% accuracy). After applying each of the six new OLR equations onto the four archaeological samples, high percentage accuracies (ranging from 92.59% to 100.00%) were found when comparing them to the previous records. The only sample that did not produce as high of an accuracy was the Chumash sample with 82.35%. In the attempt to analyse fragmented remains, three avenues were taken. Firstly, all missing values were replaced by the median score. Secondly, the original six OLR equations were 'sectioned' to make three smaller sets of equations. Lastly, to mirror the sectioned equations, three new sets of OLR equations were generated. This study shows that when using morphoscopic traits for sex estimation, applying multivariate techniques can be used to obtain a high accuracy even when dealing with fragmented samples.

Abstract:
There is a settled stereotype for women and men which give them different possibilities in our society. The schools, which are one of the most important sources of knowledge, have a great possibility to influence. This is the reason why we are interested in how the schools are working with a project, which we will call X henceforth. What was the purpose with the project and what does it contain? What is missing in the former education, since the project was started? Are there any obstacles or prerequisite in the design of the project or in the school teaching on the basis of X? We have done interviews in the gathering of empirical material to find out all the answers to our questions. To support this, we have chosen a few theories which we find suitable for the material. The teacher´s and the principal find the project X very important in the development of a more open-minded pupil. They also think that the project is helping them a lot by being supported with material and knowledges how to work with the subject.
