AbstractThis article focuses on several different issues of discrimination against women. While some such discriminatory issues are based on law, others are in fact based on just a matter of practice. Interestingly enough, some of the sex discrimination issues actually dispute the Shari‘a. One example can be found in education. The Shari‘a encourages education for both sexes while, historically, women have been denied education. The importance of mentioning the Shari‘a here is that, while Kuwait claims that it is an Islamic country and devoted to the Shari‘a, especially when it comes to women, this article proves that it is culture, not the Shari‘a, that represses women.

Title IX coordinators play an essential role in ensuring that schools are free of gender-based harassment and discrimination; however, a recent survey of coordinators in California and Colorado shows that many of them are poorly equipped to do this work. In their study, Elizabeth J. Meyer and Andrea Somoza-Norton found that contact information for Title IX coordinators is often difficult to find, that their job descriptions are too broad and complex, that they receive insufficient training, and that many are unaware of their role in assisting students, especially transgender students. The authors recommend that the Office of Civil Rights, district leaders, school boards, and Title IX coordinators themselves take action to bring clarity to this work.

Although the legislative framework for protection against discrimination in Croatia covers a considerable number of grounds and could be described as satisfactory, discrimination in society is present to a greater extent than that registered in complaints received by the Office of the Ombudswoman. Different treatment of a person or persons may involve several different legally protected grounds, resulting in a more serious form of discrimination defined under the Anti-Discrimination Act as multiple discrimination. The concept of multiple discrimination is very complex and multi-layered. Thus, the focus of this research was to conduct a survey on 761 respondents stratified by sex, education, and age. The chi-square test examined the relationship between the grounds of discrimination provided by respondents who declare themselves victims of discrimination in the area of work and working conditions, in the area of education and justice, and based on their sex, level of education, and age. The results of the research show that more than half of the respondents experienced some form of discrimination and that more than half of the respondents who declare themselves victims of discrimination experienced some of the more serious forms of discrimination.

AbstractIn this chapter, we look at the experiences of SOGI minorities who are claiming asylum or who have reached the end of the asylum process in relation to health, work and education. We define these three spheres broadly, including, for example, volunteering and impacts from having experienced sexual violence torture, as well as sex work. Ostensibly, LGBTIQ+ asylum claimants experience the same difficulties in applying for work and accessing health and education as most other asylum claimants. In reality, this is not always the case. Here, referring back to our theoretical underpinnings, including intersectionality, highlights some particular areas of need, in many cases relating to the discrimination they encounter on the basis of SOGI in addition to other characteristics. As with the previous chapter, we again show that SOGI minorities encounter particular problems outside the legal asylum process as well as within it.

Ocampo has primarily been read as a modernist cosmopolitan (literally, a citizen of the world), and as quintessentially Argentinian at the same time; she claimed citizenship in “America” as a continent. This chapter explores how her lineage, relationship to land, learning, and labor form the foundation of her “native-ness.” With the advantage of an education in English and French provided to her at home, and with the cultural capital of being from a prominent family, Ocampo undertook a literary career that spanned continents and brought about an international meeting of the minds across the USA, France, Spain, Argentina, and India. Belonging, for Ocampo, was about thinking beyond national borders to a human solidarity against oppression and discrimination.

This chapter addresses the challenges girls face in accessing human rights-based sex education. Sex education sharply brings into focus the discriminatory gender norms that influence and undermine a girl's right to education and the accountability challenges that are becoming increasingly pervasive throughout all of education. The Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), the prominent legal instrument on women's rights, offers new ways of conceptualising and addressing these challenges. There are specific obligations referring to sex education in the treaty and most importantly there is a positive obligation on the state to provide sex education to fulfil the fundamental rights of girls and women. Indeed, sex education is a necessary measure to ensure girls and women's right to life, health, education, gender equality, and freedom from violence.

Abstract This chapter examines which characteristics ought to be protected against discrimination and why. Although there is now a general consensus that sex or gender and race should be within the list of grounds of discrimination, even these were only achieved after struggle and controversy. It is only relatively recently that other grounds, such as disability, sexual orientation, and age, have been accepted as attracting special protection. Some jurisdictions provide a fixed list of grounds; others leave the issue open-ended; while a different approach is to enumerate some grounds, allowing them to be further developed by courts. This raises the question of whether there is a unifying principle drawing all these together into a coherent whole and, if so, what is it. To what extent can the choice of grounds be explained by the underlying aims of equality? And who should make the decision: courts or legislatures? Section I of this chapter addresses these questions. A related concern is the reach of equality law. Should discrimination on these grounds be unlawful in all walks of life or only in specific spheres, such as employment and education? Should both public and private actors be bound? Equality laws in many jurisdictions derive from a constitutional guarantee which may well bind only the State and not private actors. Only if legislation is specifically passed pursuant to such guarantees will private actors be bound. Section II of the chapter examines the reach of anti-discrimination law while Section III considers who is bound by such laws.

Chapter 2 examines the barriers that often prevent women from taking even the first step of initiating a domestic court case on discrimination. This chapter investigates the domestic psychological, cultural, and material obstacles to gender discrimination cases in the Russian court system. It discusses the psychological and cultural obstacles to bringing sex-based discrimination cases to Russian courts (such as the popular tendency to regard sex-based discrimination in the public sphere as a natural and justified reflection of sex-role stereotypes, and the desire to solve “personal” problems such as domestic violence privately rather than in the public eye). It discusses the negative views toward feminism in Russia. The chapter covers different types of sex-based discrimination in Russia: employment discrimination and maternity leave, gender discrimination in custody suits, gender discrimination in education, and violence against women as a type of discrimination. The chapter concludes that people who are inclined to activism are the ones most likely to be willing to bring a court case and persist in the legal process.

This comparative study of gender messages in Japanese textbooks reveals a pattern of underlying sex discrimination as well as efforts at reform. There is a “hidden curriculum”—the presence of powerful, hegemonic messages that reinforce dominant social structural values of a gender binary—shaping the learning environment and sustaining structural inequalities. An effort to address the hidden curriculum of gender and sexuality biases in Japanese textbooks was published in 2020 through the National Elementary School Health textbooks and curriculum. This study analyzes existing gender messages permeating the explicit and hidden curriculum and reform efforts, employing mixed methods of content analysis and ethnographic observations.

This book, The Legacy of Racism for Children, focuses on an extremely important but understudied topic in the psychological literature: the legacy of racial discrimination for children of color. The authors develop this theme by introducing many related and timely issues, such as sex trafficking, physical punishment, child maltreatment, education, transracial adoption, juvenile court, criminal court, and immigration. Here, we consider each chapter in the book and summarize its main points, discuss future directions, and provide some relevant research findings. Our chapter highlights the importance of the home and the education system as contexts for intervention. This chapter concludes with a poignant example to discuss the assumption of free will as applied to adolescents or adults who have experienced racial discrimination and other traumas in childhood.

This chapter explores the strong relationship between research and policy for same-sex attracted and gender diverse (SSAGD) youth in Australian education. It outlines the first phases of Australian research on the experiences of SSAGD youth and their corresponding well-being, particularly in school contexts over the past 20 years. It then describes how cultural changes in broader Australian society, strategic advocacy, and the promotion of Australian research findings have contributed to policy and practice changes around SSAGD youth issues within government and school communities. Specifically, it shows how particular policy documents and intervention initiatives in Victoria and New South Wales stemmed from research work. It also shows the value of shifting the research lens onto the impacts of these new policies.

" Other people's intervention in her fate was usually decisive. If we had acted in a different direction, a totally different outcome would have resulted. The status of women has improved with the times, but the existence of sexual injustice cannot be denied. Overt gender discrimination has decreased considerably, but gender injustice is not currently decreasing and is everywhere in schooling.
