Abstract:
Settlement projects are sustained clusters of policies that allow states to strategically plan, implement and support the permanent transfer of nationals into a territory not under their sovereignty. Once a common feature of the international system, settlement projects are now rare, and contradict international norms. Yet, these modern projects had been an important feature of some of the longest conflicts of our times, such as Israel-Palestine and Morocco-Western Sahara. Moreover, they had a profound effect on conflicts: they led to their prolongations, affected their levels of violence, patterns of resolution, as well as post-conflict stability. With this significance in mind, the book asks why states launched new settlement projects during the era of decolonization, against common practice and against international norms. The book introduces the international environment as an important enabling variable for the launch of these projects. By drawing comparisons between three such major projects--Israel in the West Bank and Gaza, Morocco in Western Sahara and Indonesia in East-Timor—the book classifies post-colonial settlement projects as a distinct cluster of cases that warrant a different analytical approach to traditional colonial studies, including settler-colonialism approaches. Built on a careful synthesis of existing principles in international relations theory and empirical research, the book advances a clearly formulated theoretical position on the launch of post-colonial settlement projects. The result yields a number of fresh insights into the relationship between conflict, territory and international norms.

Abstract:
During the later medieval period, the vast majority of the British population lived in rural settlements whose primary means of subsistence was agriculture. This overview summarizes the evidence for the villages, hamlets, and farmsteads of medieval England, Scotland, and Wales. Regional differences in the intensity of fieldwork are explored, followed by discussions of nucleated and dispersed settlement patterns, planned villages, and specialist grazing (including seasonal), coastal, industrial, and high-status settlements associated with different forms of landscape exploitation. This exposes some of the commonalities between settlement patterns in the different regions of medieval Britain, although it is also apparent that there have been separate research traditions in England, Scotland, and Wales.

Abstract:
This chapter analyzes how two of the more recent Amish settlements in New York—the Burke settlement in Franklin County and the nearby Swartzentruber settlement founded near Hopkinton in St. Lawrence County—demonstrate the diversity of the Amish world. The Burke settlers, representing one of the more progressive realizations of Amish identity, have come north from Marion, Kentucky, eager to begin farming on new land. The Hopkinton settlers, ultraconservative Swartzentruber Amish from the area around Holmes County, Ohio, also want land, but they seek a region where their young people will not be tempted as they were in the crowded diversity of their Ohio settlement. These two groups have encountered similar difficulties in finding farms, setting up schools, dealing with non-Amish neighbors and local governments, and creating markets for their wares.

Abstract:
Tracing Amish settlement in New York from the nineteenth century to the twenty-first century, this book draws on more than thirty years of participant-observation, interviews, and archival research to introduce the Amish to their non-Amish neighbors. In the last decade, New York State has had the fastest-growing Amish population, and this book highlights the diversity of Amish settlement there and the contribution of New York's Amish to the state's rich cultural heritage. This second edition updates settlement areas to acknowledge recently established communities and to demonstrate the impact of growth, schism, and migration on existing settlements. In addition, chapters treating external and internal challenges to Amish settlement and the challenges Amish settlement poses to neighboring non-Amish communities have been updated, and a new chapter looks to the future of New York's Amish. All maps have been updated, and a new map showing all of New York's Amish communities has been added.

Abstract:
This chapter talks about how not all the Amish who have come to New York have been successful in their attempt to settle there. At least six Amish settlements in New York State alone have become extinct since 1950, namely the settlements in Sinclairville (Chautauqua County, 1950–1960); Clyde (Wayne County, 1979–1999); Newport (Herkimer County, 1979–2003); Dundee (Yates County, 1981–1988); Albion (Orleans County, 1986–1996); and Poland (Herkimer County, 2002–2007). Amish settlements are, for the most part, individual enterprises, undertaken by families acting in concert rather than by groups organized in advance. Ultimately, the success and failure of a settlement is due to circumstances that are peculiar to the group.

Abstract:
In Chapter 2, the author analyses colonies in Ancient Greece (apoikia and emporion) and Rome (colonia and emporium) rooted in agrarian settlement and trade, respectively. The volume then traces the central thread of agrarian labour in ‘Western’ colonization from its roots in the colonia of Ancient Rome (agrarian settlements), linked etymologically to colonnus, meaning farmer, and colere, meaning cultivation, through John Locke’s seventeenth-century settler colonialism rooted in an agrarian labour theory of property to the central role it played in domestic colonies. The second part of the chapter examines how external colonization served domestic ends in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, by sending the unemployed, criminals, and mentally ill and disabled people from European city streets to colonies overseas. Over the next century or so, these same populations would become targets for proposed domestic colonies.
