Riggs, Christina. 5. Signs, sex, status. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/actrade/9780199682782.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
Through the materials they used and the objects they made, ancient Egyptian artists and craftsmen turned animals, plants, and the Nile into metaphors for what cannot be seen: good and evil, creation, or the transformation of the dead. ‘Signs, sex, status’ considers the references to hippopotami, the goddess Isis, the marshes, and fertility and sexual imagery that recur throughout Egyptian art and architecture, with their distinct hieroglyphic symbols, compositional rules, and social strictures. It shows how much elite men dominated the world of high culture. Women were an integral part of this social stratum as well, but gender roles and family relationships informed who was represented in art, and how.

Litwa, M. David. The Evil Creator. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197566428.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book examines the origins of the evil creator idea chiefly in light of early Christian biblical interpretation. It is divided into two main parts. In Part I, the focus is on the interpretation of a variety of alternative Christian groups (e.g., “Phibionite,” “Sethian,” “Ophite”). First, the pre-Christian Egyptian assimilation of the Jewish god to the evil deity Seth-Typhon is studied to understand its reapplication by alternative Christians to the Judeo-catholic creator. Second, an alternative Christian reception of John 8:44 (understood to refer to the devil’s father) is shown to implicate the Judeo-catholic creator in murdering Christ. Part II focuses on Marcionite Christian biblical interpretations. It begins with Marcionite interpretations of the creator’s character in Jewish scripture(Chapter 3), analyzes the reception of 2 Corinthians 4:4 (in which “the god of this world” blinds people, Chapter 4), examines Christ’s so-called destruction of the Law (Eph 2:15) and the Lawgiver (Chapters 5–6), and shows how Christ finally succumbs to the curse of the Law (Gal 3:13) inflicted by the creator (Chapter 7). A concluding chapter sums up the findings and shows how still today many readers of the Bible conclude that the creator is evil.

Propp, William H. C. Exodus 1–18. Yale University Press, 1999. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9780300261097.

Full text
Abstract:
The Book of Exodus is without a doubt one of the most eventful and important books of the Bible. William H. Propp's "Exodus 1-18" is a masterful translation, exploration, and analysis of the book's first eighteen chapters, which center around the dramatic conflict between the God of Israel and the pharaoh of Egypt over the fate of the Israelite slaves. With divine intervention and Moses on their side, the enslaved descendants of Abraham manage a harrowing escape across the parted Red Sea, leading to the birth of the nation of Israel. Threaded throughout this story of an oppressed people struggling for freedom are some of the most intriguing episodes in the Bible. From the discovery of Moses in a basket made of bulrushes to the story of the burning bush, from the plagues visited upon the Egyptians by God to water from rock and quail and manna from the skies, Exodus is filled with the miraculous and the dramatic. Doubleday is proud to be, at long last, publishing the first of two Anchor Bible Commentary volumes on Exodus. Exhaustive, meticulous, and brilliantly researched, Propp's "Exodus 1-18" will be regarded as the definitive analysis of this crucial biblical text.

Gathercole, Simon. Praeparatio Evangelica in Early Christian Gospels. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198814801.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
The novelty of the Christian message was a crucial point of discussion in the early church, a discussion reflected in both canonical and non-canonical gospels. In contrast to texts which saw the gospel events as fulfilling scripture, the Gospel of Thomas in particular is striking in presenting a virtually unqualified rejection of any antecedent revelation. Approaches are by no means confined to this binary contrast. In the Gospel of Truth, a protological myth is contained within the same work as an account of the activity of Jesus, such that praeparatio evangelica and evangelium are juxtaposed. The Nag Hammadi Gospel of the Egyptians undercuts scripture by means of the even more ancient Seth. According to the Gospel of Philip, Christian salvation has been symbolically presaged throughout history. This chapter reassesses the claim that Marcion is the only theologian truly to have claimed newness for the Christian good news.
