Abstract:

Abstract:
My contribution focuses on a photo collection dedicated to Sesto San Giovanni, a medium-sized city north of Milan that became the fifth largest industrial district in Italy after WWII. Built around the beginning of the 20th century, its heavy industries were dismantled before that century drew to its close. Closely connected to a campaign of interviews conducted by historians and social anthropologists, the images under consideration aim to relate the photographic representation of former industrial spaces in Sesto as they are today to the oral testimonies and memories gathered between 2013 and 2015. The article elaborates on several points: it briefly sketches the reasons why Sesto San Giovanni is a relevant place to study structural change and deindustrialisation; defines the nature of the visual documentation we gathered during our oral history project; describes the context where this evidence has been conceived and collected; and attempts some suggestions to understand where the fascination that emanates from these images lies, and what contemporary viewers can perceive from them as part of a large deindustrial ruin imagery, something becoming a “global genre”.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper explores the rise of “industrial heritage” and the forms of memorialization proliferating around it. The site is Sesto San Giovanni, Italy's “City of Factories,” which was also a bastion of communist mobilization and which is now bidding to be recognized on UNESCO's world heritage list. Sesto's bid is an attempt not just to recuperate and reinvigorate the landscape of Sesto's ruined factories and its massive, crumbling machinery, but also to capture and render visible and graspable the traces of what this built environment expressed and left behind—the sentiment of solidarity. I thus argue for an understanding of solidarity not just as an emotion or value, but as a structure of feeling mediated by specific material and corporeal forms, in bodies collectively inhabiting a built environment and rhythmically moving within and out of infrastructures and lived landscapes. Such a materialist conception of solidarity must account for bodies and embodiment, rhythm and refrain, as well as for how certain material forms allow for the generation of proximities, coordination, and likeness across difference. It means thinking of solidarity as an arrangement and assembly of bodies in time and space, and of these bodies and their movement as generative of political feeling and action. Based on ethnographic and archival research in Sesto San Giovanni between 2011 and 2013, I tell the story of the afterlife of a twentieth-century sentiment and its fate in an era that has rendered solidarity precarious.

Abstract:
SummaryThis paper addresses the question of the demise or resilience of political subcultures in Italy today, focusing on two areas, Sesto San Giovanni and Erba, characterized until recently by a socialist/communist subculture and a Catholic/interclassist one. The voting behaviour and political values of key social groups, above all industrial workers, in these two towns provides evidence of the persistence and indeed revival of political subcultures in Italy. The paper argues that their function has changed, though. Whereas in the past a political subculture encompassed the whole spatial community, nowadays it appears to represent the interests and needs of specific groups within a territory, thus becoming one of many political instruments and choices open to social actors and voters.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Over the past 20 years, the prevalence of diabetes in Italy has been growing, up to the current estimated proportion of about 8.5%, which accounts also for undiagnosed patients. As most of these subjects are >65 years of age, the probability of having comorbidities is high. In addition, diabetes itself exposes patients to a wide spectrum of complications, that cover several therapeutic areas. This is why the optimal management of diabetes necessarily involves a multidisciplinary team.Several models of integrated care of chronic diseases may be set: for instance, the role assigned to GPs and specialists may differ among models. Indeed, a disequilibrium between GPs and specialists is deemed to be the main cause of the low patients’ participation in Progetto Cronicità (chronic diseases project), which started in Lombardia (a Northern region in Italy) in 2018.A help to understand how to build a proper integrated care model in diabetes comes from the experience of the Authors, that describe in detail their experience in IRCCS MultiMedica (Sesto San Giovanni, MI, Italy). This Supplement ends with a review of the evidence found in literature about the advantages of a multidisciplinary management of diabetes in terms of outcomes, costs, and patients’ satisfaction.
