Abstract:
One of the measures carried by Gaius Gracchus in the course of his first tribunate in 123–2 B.C. provided for the regular sale of grain to citizens of Rome at the price of 6⅓ asses per modius. Gracchus also, presumably by the same law, provided for the construction of state granaries. The sources for the law are meagre. None of them is contemporary, and those later writers who do comment on the law furnish few details. What is known of its content is conveyed in a brief sentence from Livy's Epitomator supported by a scholiast on Cicero'spro Sestio, and in a few words of Appian. The Epitomator and Scholiast give the price at which the grain was sold.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Background. It has been estimated that more than 50% of cancers are related to the dysregulation of the PI3K-PDK1-Akt signaling axis. Within this pathway, phosphoinositide-dependent kinase-1 (PDK1) and Aurora kinase A (AurA) have key roles. PDK1 is a phosphorylation-mediated activator of Akt, the main apoptotic regulator, thereby acting at the crossroads of several oncogenic pathways. Overexpression and/or aberrant activation of AurA have been functionally linked to neoplastic transformation principally through the development of centrosome amplification and chromosomal instability. In this study, the molecular mechanisms involved in the dual inhibitory capacity of PDK1- and AurA-targeting OXID-pyridonyl compounds were explored in a panel of tumor cell lines carrying PI3KCA, K-RAS, PTEN, RB-1, EGFR and/or TP53 mutations Materials and Methods. To evaluate the enzymatic inhibitory activity, the oxindole-based derivatives were subjected to FRET-based Z′-Lyte assay (Invitrogen™) against PDK1 and AurA. All in vitro assays for ADME-Tox profiling were performed as published previously[1]. Anti-proliferative effects of OXID-pyridonyl compounds (SA16, IB35, VI8, VI18) were assessed by soft agar clonogenic formation and MTT assays after 72-h exposures with increasing concentrations (from 0.014 to 30 µM) in a panel of 15 cell lines. Protein levels were analyzed by Western Blot using commercial antibodies. OSU-03012 (PDK-1 inhibitor) and MK-5108 (AurA inhibitor) were used as reference compounds. Results. Among the four evaluated compounds, SA16 displayed nanomolar inhibitory potency against both PDK1 and AurA. In vitro, drugs SA16 and VI8 showed to exert anti-tumor activity in the 6647, TC71, SKNMC Ewing sarcoma (ES) cells lines and in the HCT116 colon carcinoma-derived cells (IC50s values between 2.6 and 25 µM after 72-h exposures), when tested in a panel of 15 cancer cell lines. These results were confirmed by the evaluation of 3D-clonogenic capacity in soft agar. The effect of 1 µM SA16 at the protein level was evaluated after 5 to 120 min exposure in the ES cell line SKNMC. No modulation of Aur-A protein or PDK-1 phosphorylation (Ser241) were observed in SKNMC cells, whereas a decrease of downstream PDK1 targets such as p-AKT, p-RSK2, and p-p44/42 MAPK was observed after 30 min of exposure. In addition, SA16 displayed acceptable in vitro ADME-Tox properties. Our results on structural insights into the mode of binding[2], in vitro drug-intake kinetics and in vivo PK appear to indicate that SA16 presents adequate features as a scaffold for the design of PDK1/AurA dual-target molecules. Conclusion. We report the synthesis of novel first-in-class 2-oxindole-based derivatives as dual PDK1-AurA kinase inhibitors as a novel scaffold for the design and synthesis of a new multitarget strategy for Ewing sarcoma.[1] Runfola M. et al. Abstract:
The pandemic of COVID-19 has afflicted every individual and has initiated a cascade of directly or indirectly involved events in precipitating mental health issues. The human species is a wanderer and hunter-gatherer by nature, and physical social distancing and nationwide lockdown have confined an individual to physical isolation. The present review article was conceived to address psychosocial and other issues and their aetiology related to the current pandemic of COVID-19. The elderly age group has most suffered the wrath of SARS-CoV-2, and social isolation as a preventive measure may further induce mental health issues. Animal model studies have demonstrated an inappropriate interacting endogenous neurotransmitter milieu of dopamine, serotonin, glutamate, and opioids, induced by social isolation that could probably lead to observable phenomena of deviant psychosocial behavior. Conflicting and manipulated information related to COVID-19 on social media has also been recognized as a global threat. Psychological stress during the current pandemic in frontline health care workers, migrant workers, children, and adolescents is also a serious concern. Mental health issues in the current situation could also be induced by being quarantined, uncertainty in business, jobs, economy, hampered academic activities, increased screen time on social media, and domestic violence incidences. The gravity of mental health issues associated with the pandemic of COVID-19 should be identified at the earliest. Mental health organization dedicated to current and future pandemics should be established along with Government policies addressing psychological issues to prevent and treat mental health issues need to be developed. Abstract:
Absenteeism: A study of truck drivers. The aim of the study was to explore reasons for absenteeism as experienced by code 11 truck drivers. Two groups were identified: one group high, and the other group low on an absenteeism continuum. Significant differences between the groups ocurred with respect to four of the sixteen personality factors of the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire. However, no significant difference in their personal values and intellectual ability could be found.

Abstract:
The influence of odours on the work atmosphere of ward personnel within a specialised healthcare setting. The purpose of the investigation was to determine whether pleasant odours could make a positive contribution to the disposition of ward staff and their experience of the work ambience. A random test method was used to select two samples from a possible four wards. The sixteen men and women were allocated to experimental and control groups at random. The results indicate that odours could make a positive difference to the disposition of workers. No such positive influence was, however, observed with regard to the work ambience.

Abstract:
The personality traits and managerial potential of managerial motivated persons: In the ligth of criticisms of the psychometric suitability of existing measures of managerial motivation a new scale, the Managerial Motivation Questionnaire (MMQ), was developed. This was done on the basis of a comprehensive study of the literature on managerial motivation and the role-motivation theory of Miner. The MMQ demonstrated adequate internal consistency. The aim of this study is to clarify the construct validity of the MMQ. Significant and positive correlations were found between managerial motivation, overall managerial potential, and nine managerial dimensions. The construct validity of the MMQ was further supported by correlations between sixteen personality traits and managerial motivation.

Abstract:
The cognitive, personality and interest profiles of homogeneous classes formed with reference to the Jung Personality Questionnaire. The principal aim of the study was to determine whether individuals can be classified into natural classes according to the dimensions of the Jung Personality Questionnaire (JPQ), viz. introversionextraversion, feeling-thinking, intuition-sensing and perception-judging. Five clusters were obtained by means of a cluster analysis. Multivariate analysis of variance revealed statistically significant differences between the obtained clusters in terms of the mean vectors of scores from the Senior Aptitude Test (SAT), the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16-PF) and the 19 Field Interest Inventory (19-FII). One-way analysis of variance was used to test the differences amongst the five clusters in terms of the above mentioned mean scores. Statistically significant results were obtained.

Abstract:
The relationship between anxiety and performance in assessment centre dimensions. This study is aimed at determining whether there is a relationship between Anxiety (Tension and Anxiety), as measured by the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire, and performance in assessment centre dimensions. The data set was collected from 145 white male candidates on entry and middle management level in an auditing firm in Gauteng. Ages of candidates varied from 24 to 35 years (x = 27,52; sd = 6,33). By using regression analyses it was found that Tension and Anxiety mainly show a negative relationship with the so-called interpersonal behaviour dimensions, such as Perseverance, Eogical and persuasive reasoning ability, and Perceived leadership image. The multiple analyses of variance (MANOVAS) for the low, middle and high tension groups and low, middle and high anxiety groups revealed no statistically significant differences in respect of the assessment centre dimensions as a whole. Implications of the findings are discussed in the article.

Abstract:
Background: Child undernutrition remains a major public health concern in developing countries, with many negative consequences to child development. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of stunting, wasting and underweight amongst Grade 1-learners in the North West Province (NWP) of South Africa (SA), taking into account gender, race and school type.Method: Eight hundred and sixteen (419 boys, 397 girls) learners participated in the study (567 black, 218 white, 31 other races). Underweight, stunting and wasting (Weight-for-age, height-for-age, BMI-for-age) were determined using the z-scores of the 2007 WHO reference sample (-2 SD).Results: A higher prevalence of wasting and underweight were found amongst the boys (8.35%; 5.97%) compared with the girls (6.30%; 2.52%), although this was only significant for underweight (p = 0.02), whilst stunting percentages were very similar amongst girls (4.53%) and boys (4.06%). Underweight was the highest in the black group (5.47%; p < 0.01), compared with the white group (0.46%) and the prevalence of the conditions is associated with school types which represent low socio-economic circumstances (Quintile 1–3 schools). Only black learners showed stunting (p < 0.01) and more black learners were wasted (n = 39) compared with white (n = 15; p = 0.08) learners. Quintile 1–3 schools had a significantly higher prevalence of underweight (5.14% – 8.18%) and stunting (3.88% – 10.7%) (p < 0.01) compared with Quintile 4 and 5 schools. Conclusion: The prevalence of stunting, wasting and underweight need improvement amongst school beginners, especially in Quintile 1–3 type schools but also amongst black learners living in the NWP of SA as it can have significant hampering effects on the future development and well-being of children.Agtergrond: Ondervoeding is steeds ‘n publieke gesondheidsgevaar by kinders in ontwikklende lande, met heelwat negatiewe gevolge vir kinderontwikkeling.
