Full textAs the traffic of video streaming increases significantly in mobile networks, it is essential for oper- ators to account for the features of this traffic when dimensioning and configuring the network. The focus of this thesis is on traffic models of video streaming in mobile networks. For real-time video streaming traffic, we derive an analytical form for an important Quality-of-Service (QoS) metric, the packet outage rate, and utilize the model for dimensioning. For HTTP adaptive video streaming traffic, we propose and evaluate other QoS metrics such as the mean video bit rate, the deficit rate and the buffer surplus, so as to find the good trade-off between video resolution and playback smoothness. We study by simulation the impacts of some key parameters of the system. We show that using smaller chunk durations, fewer video coding rates and round-robin scheduling may provide a smoother video playback but decrease the mean video resolution. We also propose to adapt the number of chunks downloaded in an HTTP request so that each HTTP request has the same data volume. Finally, we apply machine learning techniques to analyze the correlation between system characteristics and the quality of experience (QoE) of users

Full textDue to the growth of video traffic over the Internet in recent years, HTTP AdaptiveStreaming (HAS) solution becomes the most popular streaming technology because ithas been succesfully adopted by the different actors in Internet video ecosystem. Itallows the service providers to use traditional stateless web servers and mobile edgecaches for streaming videos. Further, it allows users to access media content frombehind Firewalls and NATs.In this thesis we focus on the design of a novel video streaming delivery solutioncalled Backward-Shifted Coding (BSC), a complementary solution to Dynamic AdaptiveStreaming over HTTP (DASH), the standard version of HAS. We first describe theBackward-Shifted Coding scheme architecture based on the multi-layer Scalable VideoCoding (SVC). We also discuss the implementation of BSC protocol in DASH environment. Then, we perform the analytical evaluation of the Backward-Sihifted Codingusing results from queueing theory. The analytical results show that BSC considerablydecreases the video playback interruption which is the worst event that users can experienceduring the video session. Therefore, we design bitrate adaptation algorithms inorder to enhance the Quality of Experience (QoE) of the users in DASH/BSC system. The results of the proposed adaptation algorithms show that the flexibility of BSC allowsus to improve both the video quality and the variations of the quality during thestreaming session. Finally, we propose new caching policies to be used with video contents encodedusing SVC. Indeed, in DASH/BSC system, cache servers are deployed to make contentsclosed to the users in order to reduce network latency and improve user-perceived experience. We use Linear Programming to obtain optimal static cache composition tocompare with the results of our proposed algorithms. We show that these algorithmsincrease the system overall hit ratio and offload the backhaul links by decreasing thefetched content from the origin web servers

Full textDriven by the increasing demand for multimedia services in broadband Internet networks, WIMAX technology has emerged as a competitive alternative to the wired broadband access solutions. The IEEE 802.16 is a solution that provides high throughput by ensuring a satisfactory QoS. In particular, it is suitable for multimedia applications that have strict QoS constraints. However, the users’ heterogeneity and diversity in terms of bandwidth, radio conditions and available resources, pose new deployment challenges. Indeed, multimedia applications need to interact with their environment to inform the access network about their QoS requirements and dynamically adapt to changing network conditions. In this context, we propose two solutions for video streaming over 802.16 networks based on Cross-Layer approach. We are interested in both unicast and multicast transmissions in uplink and downlink of one or more WIMAX cells.First, we proposed an architecture that enables Cross-Layer adaptation and optimization of video streaming based on available resources. We defined the entity CLO (Cross-Layer Optimizer) that takes benefits from service flow management messages, exchanged between BS and SS, at the MAC level, to determine the necessary adaptations / adjustment to ensure optimal delivery of the application. Adaptations occur at two epochs, during the admission of the video stream and during the streaming phase. The performance analysis, performed through simulations, shows the effectiveness of the CLO to adapt in a dynamic way, the video data rate depending on network conditions, and thus guarantee an optimal QoS.Second, we proposed a solution that enables IP multicast video delivery in WIMAX network. This solution allows finding the compromise between the diversity of end-user requirements, in terms of radio conditions, modulation schemes and available resources, along with the SVC hierarchy video format, to offer the best video quality even for users with low radio conditions. Indeed, we define a multicast architecture that allows each user to get a video quality proportionally to its radio conditions and its available bandwidth. Towards this end, several IP multicast groups are created depending on the SVC video layers. Subsequently, our solution allows optimizing the use of radio resources by exploiting the different modulations that can be selected by the end-users

Full textIn recent years, mobile devices have become more powerful in terms of computing power, memory, size and screen quality. These improvements have greatly stimulated demand for multimedia services including video streaming. Moreover, customers are increasingly demanding in terms of the quality rendered on this type of service. In addition, a bad experience of video streaming has a great impact on the perception that customers have of the operator. Optimizing the quality of experience (QoE) of customers on the services of video streaming is thus a major competitive challenge. In this thesis, we are interested in modeling and optimizing the QoE of the streaming services taking into account the usages and the mobility of the clients. In particular, we are interested in two strategies for delivering content on the mobile network: the Fast Caching strategy and the On-Off strategy. We develop analytical models that allow us to calculate major indicators of the QoE for the streaming service that are: i) starvation, which drives operators to send more video content to customers and ii) the loss due to abandoning the video playback, which pushes them to send video content in a strictly reasonable manner. An optimal balance is to be found. We also propose QoE oriented strategies by maintaining a good level of QoE over the entire network and optimizing the QoE indicators of streaming services

Full textVideo streaming has become ubiquitous and pervasive in usage of the electronic displaying devices. Streaming becomes more challenging when dealing with an enormous number of video streams. Particularly, the challenges lie in streaming types, video transcoding, video storing, and video delivering to users with high satisfaction and low cost for video streaming providers. In this dissertation, we address the challenges and issues encountered in video streaming and cloud-based video streaming. Specically, we study the impact factors on video transcoding in the cloud, and then we develop a model to trade-o between performance and cost of cloud. On the other hand, video streaming providers generally have to store several formats of the same video and stream the appropriate format based on the characteristics of the viewer's device. This approach, called pre-transcoding, incurs a signicant cost to the stream providers that rely on cloud services. Furthermore, pre-transcoding is proven to be inecient due to the long-tail access pattern to video streams. To reduce the incurred cost, we propose to pre-transcode only frequently-accessed videos (called hot videos) and partially pre-transcode others, depending on their hotness degree. Therefore, we need to measure video stream hotness. Accordingly, we first, provide a model to measure the hotness of video streams. Then, we develop methods that operate based on the hotness measure and determine how to pre-transcode videos to minimize the cost of stream providers. The partial pre-transcoding methods operate at dierent granularity levels to capture dierent patterns in accessing videos. Particularly, one of the methods operates faster but cannot partially pre-transcode videos with the non-long-tail access pattern. Experimental results show the ecacy of our proposed methods, specically, when a video stream repository includes a high percentage of Frequently Accessed Video Streams and a high percentage of videos with the non-long-tail accesses pattern.

Full textThe emerging and fast growth of multimedia services have created new challenges for network service providers in order to guarantee the best user's Quality of Experience (QoE) in diverse networks with distinctive access technologies. Usually, various methods and techniques are used to predict the user satisfaction level by studying the combined impact of numerous factors. In this thesis, we consider two important multimedia services to evaluate the user perception, which are: video streaming service, and VoIP. This study investigates user's QoE that follows three directions: (1) methodologies for subjective QoE assessment of video services, (2) regulating user's QoE using video a rate adaptive algorithm, and (3) QoE-based power efficient resource allocation methods for Long Term Evaluation-Advanced (LTE-A) for VoIP. Initially, we describe two subjective methods to collect the dataset for assessing the user's QoE. The subjectively collected dataset is used to investigate the influence of different parameters (e.g. QoS, video types, user profile, etc.) on user satisfaction while using the video services. Later, we propose a client-based HTTP rate adaptive video streaming algorithm over TCP protocol to regulate the user's QoE. The proposed method considers three Quality of Service (QoS) parameters that govern the user perception, which are: Bandwidth, Buffer, and dropped Frame rate (BBF). The BBF method dynamically selects the suitable video quality according to network conditions and user's device properties. Lastly, we propose a QoE driven downlink scheduling method, i.e. QoE Power Escient Method (QEPEM) for LTE-A. It esciently allocates the radio resources, and optimizes the use of User Equipment (UE) power utilizing the Discontinuous Reception (DRX) method in LTE-A

Full textAdaptive video streaming techniques enable the delivery of content that is encoded at various levels of quality and split into temporal segments. Before downloading a segment, the client runs an adaptation algorithm to determine the level of quality that best matches the network resources. For immersive video streaming this adaptation mechanism should also consider the head movement of a user watching the 360° video to maximize the quality of the viewed portion. However, this adaptation may suffer from errors, which impact the end user’s quality of experience. In this case, an HTTP/1 client must wait for the download of the next segment to choose a suitable quality. In this thesis, we propose to use the HTTP/2 protocol instead to address this problem. First, we focus live streaming video. We design a strategy to discard video frames when the band width is very variable in order so as to avoid the rebuffering events and the accumulation of delays. The customer requests each video frame in an HTTP/2 stream which allows to control the delivery of frames by leveraging the HTTP/2 features at the level of the dedicated stream. Besides, we use the priority and reset stream features of HTTP/2 to optimize the delivery of immersive videos. We propose a strategy to benefit from the improvement of the user’s head movements prediction overtime. The results show that HTTP/2 allows to optimize the use of network resources and to adapt to the latencies required by each service

Full textWith the network heterogeneity and increasing demand of multimedia services, Quality of Experience (QoE) becomes a crucial determinant of the success or failure of these services. In this thesis, we first propose to analyze the impact of quality metrics on user engagement, in order to understand the effects of video metrics (video startup time, average bitrate, buffering ratio) and content popularity on user engagement. Our results show that video buffering and content popularity are critical parameters which strongly impacts the end-user’s satisfaction and user engagement, while the video startup time appears as less significant. On other hand, we consider subjective approaches such as the Mean Opinion Score (MOS) for evaluating QoE, in which users are required to give their assessment according to contextual information. A detailed statistical analysis of our study shows the existence of non-trivial parameters impacting MOS (the type of device and the content type). We propose mathematical models to develop functional relationships between the QoE and the context information which in turn permits us to estimate the QoE. A video content optimization technique called MDASH (for MOS Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) is proposed, which improves the perceived QoE for different video sessions sharing the same local network, while taking QoE fairness among users as a leitmotiv. We also propose a utility-based approach for video delivery optimization, in which a global utility function is computed based on different constraints (e.g. target strategies coming from the actors of the delivery chain)

Full textRecently, cellular networks have witnessed a phenomenal growth of traffic fueled by new high speed broadband cellular access technologies. This growth is in large part driven by the emergence of the HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) as a new video delivery method. In HAS, several qualities of the same videos are made available in the network so that clients can choose the quality that best fits their bandwidth capacity. This strongly impacts the viewing pattern of the clients, their switching behavior between video qualities, and thus beyond on content delivery systems. In this context, we provide an analysis of a real HAS dataset collected in France and provided by the largest French mobile operator. Firstly, we analyze and model the viewing patterns of VoD and live streaming HAS sessions and we propose a new cache replacement strategy, named WA-LRU. WA-LRU leverages the time locality of video segments within the HAS content. We show that WA-LRU improves the performance of the cache. Second, we analyze and model the adaptation logic between the video qualities based on empirical observations. We show that high switching behaviors lead to sub optimal caching performance, since several versions of the same content compete to be cached. In this context we investigate the benefits of a Cache Friendly HAS system (CF-DASH) which aims at improving the caching efficiency in mobile networks and to sustain the quality of experience of mobile clients. Third, we investigate the mobile video prefetching opportunities. We show that CPSys can achieve high performance as regards prediction correctness and network utilization efficiency. We further show that CPSys outperforms other prefetching schemes from the state of the art. At the end, we provide a proof-of-concept implementation of our prefetching system

Full textBitrate adaptation is a key issue when considering streaming applications involving throughput limited networks with error prone channels, as wireless networks. The emergence of recent source coding standards like the scalable extension of H. 264/AVC namely Scalable Video Coding (SVC), that allows to encode in the same bitstream a wide range of spatio-temporal and quality layers, offers new adaptation facilities. The concept of scalability, when exploited for dynamic channel adaptation purposes, raises at least two kinds of issues: how to measure network conditions and how to differentiate transmitted data in terms of distortion contribution ? In this document, we propose and compare different approaches in terms of network architecture in order to comply with different practical requirements. The first approach consists in a video streaming system that uses SVC coding in order to adapt the input stream at the radio link layer as a function of the available bandwidth, thanks to a Media Aware Network Element (MANE) that assigns priority labels to video packets. The second approach consists in not modifying the existing network infrastructure and keeping the adaptation operations in the server that exploits long term feedbacks from the client. Moreover, in this document, we present a recursive distortion model, which is used to dynamically calculate the contribution of each packet to the final distortion. Finally, in the scope of lossy compression with subband decomposition and quantization, a contribution has been proposed in order to jointly resize decoded pictures and adapt the inverse transformation matrices following quantization noise and images content

Full textVideo streaming is the dominant contributor of today's Internet traffic. Consequently, estimating Quality of Experience (QoE) for video streaming is of paramount importance for network operators. The QoE of video streaming is directly dependent on the network conditions (e.g., bandwidth, delay, packet loss rate) referred to as the network Quality of Service (QoS). This inherent relationship between the QoS and the QoE motivates the use of supervised Machine Learning (ML) to build models that map the network QoS to the video QoE. In most ML works on QoE modeling, the training data is usually gathered in the wild by crowdsourcing or generated inside the service provider networks. However, such data is not easily accessible to the general research community. Consequently, the training data if not available beforehand, needs to be built up by controlled experimentation. Here, the target application is run under emulated network environments to build models that predict video QoE from network QoS. The network QoS can be actively measured outside the data plane of the application (outband), or measured passively from the video traffic (inband). These two distinct types of QoS correspond to the use cases of QoE forecasting (from end user devices) and QoE monitoring (from within the networks). In this thesis, we consider the challenges associated with network QoS-QoE modeling, which are 1) the large training cost of QoE modeling by controlled experimentation, and 2) the accurate prediction of QoE considering the large diversity of video contents and the encryption deployed by today's content providers. Firstly, QoE modeling by controlled experimentation is challenging due to the high training cost involved as each experiment usually consumes some non-negligible time to complete and the experimental space to cover is large (power the number of QoS features). The conventional approach is to experiment with QoS samples uniformly sampled in the entire experimental space. However, uniform sampling can result in significant similarity in the output labels, which increases the training cost while not providing much gain in the model accuracy. To tackle this problem, we advocate the use of active learning to reduce the number of experiments while not impacting accuracy. We consider the case of YouTube QoE modeling and show that active sampling provides a significant gain over uniform sampling in terms of achieving higher modeling accuracy with fewer experiments. We further evaluate our approach with synthetic datasets and show that the gain is dependent on the complexity of the experimental space. Overall, we present a sampling approach that is general and can be used in any QoSQoE modeling scenario provided that the input QoS features are fully controllable. Secondly, accurate prediction of QoE of video streaming can be challenging as videos offered by today's content providers vary significantly from fast motion sports videos to static lectures. On top of that, today's video traffic is encrypted, which means that network operators have little visibility into the video traffic making QoE monitoring difficult. Considering these challenges, we devise models that aim at accurate forecasting and monitoring of video QoE. For the scenario of QoE forecasting, we build a QoE indicator called YouScore that quantifies the percentage of videos in the catalog of a content provider that may play out smoothly (without interruptions) for a given outband network QoS. For the QoE monitoring scenario, we estimate the QoE using the inband QoS features obtained from the encrypted video traffic. Overall, for both scenarios (forecasting and monitoring), we highlight the importance of using features that characterize the video content to improve the accuracy of QoE modeling

Full textThere is an increasing demand for scalable deployment of real-time multimedia streaming applications over Internet. In this context, Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks are playing an important role for supporting robust and large-scale transmission of multimedia content to heterogeneous clients. However, the deployment of real-time video streaming applications over P2P networks arises lot of challenges due to heterogeneity of terminals and access networks, dynamicity of peers, and other problems inherited from IP network. Real-time streaming applications are very sensitive to packet loss, jitter / transmission delay, and available end-to-end bandwidth. These elements have key importance in QoS provisioning and need extra consideration for smooth delivery of video streaming applications over P2P networks. Beside the abovementioned issues, P2P applications lack of awareness in constructing their overlay topologies and do not have any explicit interaction with service and network providers. This situation leads to inefficient utilization of network resources and may cause potential violation of peering agreements between providers. The aim of this thesis is to analyze these issues and to propose an adaptive real-time transport mechanism for QoS provisioning of Scalable Video Coding (SVC) applications over P2P networks. Our contributions in this dissertation are threefold. First, we propose a hybrid overlay organization mechanism allowing intelligent organization of sender peers based on network-awareness, media- awareness, and quality-awareness. This overlay organization is further used for an appropriate selection of best sender peers, and the efficient switching of peers to ensure a smooth video delivery when any of the sender peers is no more reliable. Second, we propose a packet video scheduling mechanism to assign different parts of the video content to specific peers. Third, we present a service provider driven P2P network framework that enables effective interaction between service / network providers and P2P applications to perform QoS provisioning mechanism for the video streaming

Full textReal-time applications, such as Multi-party conferencing systems, have strong Quality of Service requirements for ensuring a decent Quality of Experience. Nowadays, most of these conferences are performed on wireless devices. Thus, heterogeneous mobile devices and network dynamics must be properly managed to provide a good quality of experience. In this thesis, we propose two algorithms for building and maintaining conference sessions based on Software-Defined Network that uses both multicast distribution and streams adaptation. The first algorithm set up the conference call by building multicast trees for each participant. Then, it optimally places the stream adaptation locations and rules inside the network in order to minimize the bandwidth consumption. We have created two versions of this algorithm: the first one, based on the shortest path trees is minimizing the latency, while the second one, based on spanning trees is minimizing the bandwidth consumption. The second algorithm adapts the multicast trees according to the network changes occurring during a call. It does not recompute the trees, but only relocates the locations and rules of stream adaptation. It requires very low computation at the controller, thus making our proposal fast and highly reactive. Extensive simulation results confirm the efficiency of our solution in terms of processing time and bandwidth savings compared to existing conferencing systems based on a Multipoint Control Unit and Application Layer Multicast

Full textLive Streaming consists in distributing live media (video and audio) to large audiences over a computer network. Recently, a peer-to-peer (P2P) approach is used to ensure this service. It has the big advantage of seamlessly scaling to arbitrary population sizes, as every node that receives the video, while consuming resources, can at the same time offer its own upload bandwidth to serve other nodes. Providing a live streaming service based on a P2P approach, presents many challenges due to the unpredictable behavior of the system users. The aim of this thesis is to analyze these challenges and to propose a set of mechanism improving the video quality. Our contributions in this dissertation are twofold. First, we propose a P2P live streaming system called P-QOLS that ensures a smooth video display while reducing as much as possible the play-out delay. It is based on an overlay construction mechanism providing a set of optimized neighbors for each client. The results of simulations show this system efficiency in heterogeneous cases. Second, we propose a fast packet recovery mechanism ensuring a smooth video display. It consists in requesting the lost packets from a sender peer that is different from the original sender of these packets. The results of simulations show this mechanism efficiency when it is compared to the current mechanism

Full textRecently we witnessed an increasing demand for scalable deployment of real-time multimediastreaming applications over Internet. In this context, Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks are playing asignificant role for supporting large-scale and robust distribution of multimedia content to end-users.However, due to peers’ dynamicity, heterogeneity of terminals and access networks, the deploymentof real-time video streaming applications over P2P networks arises lot of challenges. Indeed, animportant issue in P2P overlays is the capacity to self-organize in the face of the dynamic behavior ofpeers in order to ensure content availability and continuity. In addition, the heterogeneity in networks, terminals, and P2P characteristics make the situation more challenging. In this context, layered videostreaming in P2P networks has drawn great interest to overcome these challenges, since it can notonly accommodate large numbers of users, but also handle heterogeneity of peers. However, there isstill a lack of comprehensive studies on video data blocks (chunks) scheduling and bandwidthallocation for the smooth playout in layered streaming over P2P networks. The aim of this thesis is to analyze these concerns and to propose an efficient real-time chunksscheduling and bandwidth allocation mechanisms for QoS provisioning of layered streamingapplications over P2P networks. Our contributions in this thesis are threefold. First, we propose ascheduling mechanism for layered P2P streaming. The proposed mechanism relies on a novelscheduling algorithm that enables each peer to select appropriate stream layers, along withappropriate peers to provide them. The presented mechanism makes efficient use of networkresources and provides high system throughput. Second, we propose a bandwidth allocation modelfor P2 layered streaming systems based on auction mechanisms to optimize the allocation of senderpeers’ uploads bandwidth. The upstream peers organize auctions to “sell” theirs items (links’bandwidth) according to bids submitted by the downstream peers taking into consideration the peerspriorities and the requested layers importance. The ultimate goal is to satisfy the quality levelrequirement for each peer, while reducing the overall streaming cost. Finally, we present a smoothingmechanism for layered streaming in P2P networks. The mechanism aims to reduce the number oflayer changes under varying network conditions, and ensure a smooth playout for the end-user

The use of streaming services has grown significantly in recent years, through systems such as Youtube, Hulu, Netflix, Vimeo, etc. Using the stream, videos are transmitted and displayed in real time and from anywhere in the world via the Internet. Many users of these systems use the same in their homes where it is quite common to find a wireless network (due to the mobility we can achieve through this type of computer network). In spite of having more mobility, a wireless network is more susceptible to interference than the wired network so a video can have its picture degraded more easily just because it is transmitted over a wireless network. We evaluate the transmission of videos via stream to find out whether the video is actually degraded by transmission; if different types of content affect the quality of the received video; and if there are compression standarts (H.264 and MPEG-4 HEVC, the most currently used) which ensure a better received video quality. Through an experimental approach with a design of full factorial experiments, several transmissions of videos were made in the three chosen standarts. In addition to defining the standarts, other variables were defined as: transmission channel occupancy percentage (in order to evaluate the degradation of videos according to occupation); power transmission signal (in order to assess the impact of network signal quality in the video received); amount of motion in the video (to evaluate whether the amount of motion the video displays impacts on its quality). For the experiments we used a residential environment that has all the interference from other networks, just as it can happen in a real environment. To set the occupancy percentages, experiments were performed to measure the maximum transmission capacity of the test network. Concerning the quantity of movement, it was necessary to make a preliminary classification of videos according to spatial and temporal characteristics of each one. The videos were separated into three categories and within these categories, three videos were chosen at random to participate in the experiments. The results show that the HEVC achieved the highest average for quality metricsofthechosenvideos, andthecodecistheonethatloseslessqualityinawireless transmission. The amount of movement affects the quality of the received video, and the greater the amount of motion, the bigger the loss of image quality.

Full textThe breadth of availability and variety of online video contents has helped to encourage a far more mobile experience, which has proved particularly popular among younger generations. Over The Top (OTT) services, particularly those on-demand video platforms, became more and more attractive to consumers when compared with the current main TV packages. This document describes how the video OTT Ecosystem works from a technical side. The description presented reaches both ends of the distribution chain: from how the video signals are acquired and processed, thru all the way to how they are delivered to the client, passing by the challenges and consequences that such services have on the network. The main objective of this dissertation is to understand the possibility to create in Portugal a new operator where the core business is video delivery using only OTT services.

We study recent statistics about unmanaged video services like YouTube and propose suitable optimization techniques that could enhance files accessing and reduce their access costs. Moreover, this cost analysis plays an important role in decision making about video files caching and hosting periods on the servers. Under managed video services called IPTV, we conducted experiments for an open-IPTV collaborative architecture between different operators. This model is analyzed in terms of CAPEX and OPEX costs inside the domestic sphere. Moreover, we introduced a dynamic way for optimizing the Minimum Spanning Tree (MST) for multicast IPTV service. In nomadic access, the static trees could be unable to provide the service in an efficient manner as the utilization of bandwidth increases towards the streaming points (roots of topologies). Finally, we study reliable security measures in video streaming based on hash chain methodology and propose a new algorithm. Then, we conduct comparisons between different ways used in achieving reliability of hash chains based on generic classifications

Full textIn the context of on-demand video streaming services, both the caching allocation and the recommendation policy have an impact on the user satisfaction, and financial implications for the Content Provider (CP) and the Content Delivery Network (CDN). Although caching and recommendations are traditionally decided independently of each other, the idea of co-designing these decisions can lead to lower delivery costs and to less traffic at the backbone Internet. This thesis follows this direction of exploiting the interplay of caching and recommendations in the setting of streaming services. It approaches the subject through the perspective of the users, and then from a network-economical point of view. First, we study the problem of jointly optimizing caching and recommendations with the goal of maximizing the overall experience of the users. This joint optimization is possible for CPs that simultaneously act as CDN owners in today’s or future architectures. Although we show that this problem is NP-hard, through a careful analysis, we provide the first approximation algorithm for the joint problem. We then study the case where recommendations and caching are decided by two separate entities (the CP and the CDN, respectively) who want to maximize their individual profits. Based on tools from game theory and optimization theory, we propose a novel cooperation mechanism between the two entities on the grounds of recommendations. This cooperation allows them to design a cache-friendly recommendation policy that ensures a fair split of the resulting gains

Full textThe purpose of this thesis is to present an attractive service for the third generation mobile network that includes streaming video. A prototype application for this service is to be built. The technique behind streaming video is to be presented so that it comes clear what kind of problems and solutions that are associated with streaming. Finally, a platform for streaming video is to be tested and evaluated through different channels.
The attractive service presented in this thesis is MMS - Multimedia Messaging Service. Today's popular SMS is evolving beyond text to multimedia. Multimedia will be part of the next generation messaging service called MMS, which will, in an advanced shape, include streaming video. MMS is expected to be a successful service for the next generation?s cell phones.
The WAP Forum and the 3GPP industry groups are responsible for standardizing MMS. The standard defines an MMS architecture, which has a number of key elements that interact with each other. The prototype application that was built is called mVideo Messaging and is an MMS that is built on the basis of the MMS standard. The kernel of the prototype is a platform from PacketVideo that makes it possible to stream video over wireless networks.
Theories and tests makes it clear that the parameters affecting the video quality can be found at the source/target while coding and compressing, as well as at the streaming-channel. At the channel there are above all three network problems - packet loss, end-to-end delay and delay jitter. To deal with these matters, new protocols have been developed. At the source/target it is important use an efficient compression scheme. MPEG-4 is a new compression scheme that suits very well for streaming video through wireless channels. MPEG- 4 make use of scalability, is object oriented, and is optimized for streaming between 9,6 kbps and 4 Mbps.
The service proposed in this thesis as a future service for 3G is practicable. It is also shown that the service can be built using the technology of today.

Full textIn Content Delivery Networks (CDN), Quality of Experience (QoE) provides a major performance indicator that is continuity of service. As a consequence, network robustness has become a major concern for network operators. TDF operates a traditional transport network for real-time video and audio transport through multicast. Any failure on the network causes a recovery time implying loss and an impact in the content viewing. This study's goal is to define an architecture preventing impact on the content during network healing time. This architecture computes and deploys redundant disjoint multicast trees on the transport network. As restitution equipments are able to exploit path diversity, packet loss consequences can be avoided. This work's main part is the development and evaluation of different algorithm for the computation of distribution trees, as part of the routing element of the architecture. Protocol specification and deployment process are also considered. Implementation is based on a Software Defined Networking (SDN) architecture in which a central controller uses its knowledge of the performance and bandwidth allocation to compute and maintain pairs of multicast trees

Full textPotential scalability and low deployment cost of the Peer-to-Peer (P2P) architecture makes it a favorable choice for video streaming services. P2P systems involve end-hosts, called peers, in the stream delivery task by turning them into relays. Since peers are controlled by users, their behavior directly impacts the performance of these systems. Current approaches lack a comprehensive consideration of user behavior, hence suffering from Quality-of-Service issues. In this thesis, we focus on user behavior for performance improvement of P2P live streaming systems. To precisely understand the user behavior, we perform a synthesis of its measurements and based on it, we propose both a non-contextual and a contextual model. The former model includes two statistical methods, one based on exponential moving average and the other on Bayesian inference. Both of them only rely on the history of past sessions. The later model consists in a Bayesian network model that takes into account all variables identified in user behavior measurements. We validate our model through simulations over synthetic traces of realistic user behaviors generated through a semi-Markovian model. Finally, we propose two strategies that make use of our models to make P2P live streaming systems user-aware. These mechanisms are aimed at the stabilization of the overlay. Experiments in a LAN environment and over PlanetLab show that our approaches significantly improve the performance of an existing system

Full textThere is an increasing demand for efficient deployment of real-time multimedia streaming applications over Internet. In this context, Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks are playing an important role for supporting robust and scalable transmission of multimedia content to large-scale and massive receivers. P2P networks consist of different heterogeneous networks and devices, which may not have symmetric characteristics to offer the same video quality to end clients. The deployment of streaming applications such as live and on-demand over P2P networks is challenging. Indeed, video streaming applications require real-time performance guarantee in terms of low end-to-end delay, low packet loss and guaranteed available bandwidth. Moreover, P2P video streaming also experiences the problems of long start-time and churn-induced instability. The situation leads to affect the viewing experience of the users in P2P networks. The aim of this thesis is to analyze these issues and to propose quality-aware mechanisms for both live and on-demand streaming over P2P networks. Our contributions in this dissertation are threefold. First, we propose a small world overlay organization mechanism allowing efficient organization of peers to reduce the end-to-end delay for live streaming applications. Second, we propose a mechanism for cooperative prefetching with differentiated chunks scheduling suitable for P2P video-on-demand (VoD) to efficiently handle seek operations while reducing the response latency and increasing the hit ratio. Finally, we present a smoothing mechanism for layered streaming in P2P networks. The mechanism aims to reduce the number of layer changes under varying network conditions while at the same time achieving a high delivery ratio

Full textOmnidirectional videos, also denoted as spherical videos or 360° videos, are videos with pixels recorded from a given viewpoint in every direction of space. A user watching such an omnidirectional content with a Head Mounted Display (HMD) can select the portion of the videoto display, usually denoted as viewport, by moving her head. To feel high immersion inside the content a user needs to see viewport with 4K resolutionand 90 Hz frame rate. With traditional streaming technologies, providing such quality would require a data rate of more than 100 Mbit s−1, which is far too high compared to the median Internet access band width. In this dissertation, I present my contributions to enable the streaming of highly immersive omnidirectional videos on the Internet. We can distinguish six contributions : a viewport-adaptive streaming architecture proposal reusing a part of existing technologies ; an extension of this architecture for videos with six degrees of freedom ; two theoretical studies of videos with non homogeneous spatial quality ; an open-source software for handling 360° videos ; and a dataset of recorded users’ trajectories while watching 360° videos
