Abstract:
The effect of service-learning on college and university students has attracted considerable scholarly attention in the last decade. However, few attempts to replicate studies are conducted. The purpose of the research reported in this article is threefold: (1) to assess the reliability of a modified version of Kelly, Chase, and Tucker's (1979) taxonomy to discriminate accurately between sub-categories of replication in studies of service-learning outcomes; (2) to determine the extent of replications in the service-learning outcomes literature; and (3) to make recommendations based on the study's results. The research sample consists of data-based articles published in peer-reviewed journals between[space] 1993 and 2004. The taxonomy's ability to discriminate [between] types of replications yields an inter-rater reliability of 88 percent. The results indicated that 31 (70.4 percent) of the studies were classified as either operational or constructive replications. Many of the studies were “within-study” replications, meaning that researchers are replicating their own research. Several recommendations for improving the quality of service-learning outcomes research are proposed.

In the recent past, few services marketing topics have attracted as much attention as the measuring and management of service quality. In this study an instrument developed in the United States of America, which measures the service quality in a South African retail environment, is empirically evaluated. The retail service quality instrument has been shown to be a valid and reliable instrument and the developers' claim of construct reliability can be supported.

Abstract:
Web services provide application to application integration across different platforms. However, the consumption of web services generates request traffic that must be attended to by an instance of the web server without fail. To guarantee dependability of the web service, the instances of the web service are replicated as a way of scaling the web service. The Replication Oriented Architecture (ROA) has been designed and implemented using the Java Enterprise application development platform and interesting results have been obtained. Improvements in the PHP scripting language have made it a popular programming language for web and enterprise application development. In this paper, an implementation of the ROA architecture using PHP is done. The implementation is simulated on the Apache Jmeter and results compared to the results obtained in the Java implementation. The results show that both application development platforms achieve web service scalability as a quality of service (QOS) expected of a web service. In specific terms, 50.9% at 95.0% confidence level improvement in response time was achieved when PHP is used which compares favorably with 22.5% improvement at 95.0% confidence level achieved on the Java platform.

Abstract:
The distributed data management system Rucio manages all data of the ATLAS collaboration across the grid. Automation, such as data replication and data rebalancing are important to ensure proper operation and execution of the scientific workflow. In this proceedings, a new data allocation grid service based on machine learning is proposed. This learning agent takes subsets of the global datasets and proposes a better allocation based on the imposed cost metric, such as waiting time in the workflow. As a service, it can be modularized and can run independently of the existing rebalancing and replication mechanisms. Furthermore, it collects data from other services and learns better allocation while running in the background. Apart from the user selecting datasets, other data services may consult this meta-heuristic service for improved data placement. Network and storage utilization is also taken into account.

Abstract:
In response to widespread concerns about the integrity of research published in scholarly journals, several initiatives have emerged that are promoting research transparency through access to data underlying published scientific findings. Journal editors, in particular, have made a commitment to research transparency by issuing data policies that require authors to submit their data, code, and documentation to data repositories to allow for public access to the data. In the case of the American Journal of Political Science (AJPS) Data Replication Policy, the data also must undergo an independent verification process in which materials are reviewed for quality as a condition of final manuscript publication and acceptance. Aware of the specialized expertise of the data archives, AJPS called upon the Odum Institute Data Archive to provide a data review service that performs data curation and verification of replication datasets. This article presents a case study of the collaboration between AJPS and the Odum Institute Data Archive to develop a workflow that bridges manuscript publication and data review processes. The case study describes the challenges and the successes of the workflow integration, and offers lessons learned that may be applied by other data archives that are considering expanding their services to include data curation and verification services to support reproducible research.

Abstract:
The cloud is an infrastructure that provides decentralized on-demand services. It allows consumers to pay only for the services they use. The consumer is the important entity in the cloud. The violation of the SLA contract between the consumer and the provider often leads to consequences because the service provider has to pay penalties. Data replication is emerging as an ideal solution to meet the new challenges of the cloud. This paper proposes a new replication strategy based on the popularity of data. This strategy adaptively selects the files to be replicated to improve the overall availability of data in the system, minimize query response time, and achieve the required quality of service. In addition, it dynamically determines the number of replicas to add and the best locations to store them. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

Abstract:
Standards like SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI facilitate the proliferation of services. Based on these technologies, processes are a means to combine services to applications and to provide new value-added services. For large information systems, a centralized process engine is no longer appropriate due to limited scalability. Instead, in this paper, we propose a distributed and decentralized process engine that routes process instances directly from one peer to the next. Such a peer-to-peer process execution promises good scalability characteristics since it is able to dynamically balance the load of processes and services among all available service providers. Therefore, navigation costs only accumulate on peers that are directly involved in the execution. However, this requires sophisticated strategies for the replication of meta-data for peer-to-peer process execution. Especially, replication mechanisms should avoid frequent accesses to global information repositories. In our system, called OSIRIS (Open Service Infrastructure for Reliable and Integrated Process Support), we deploy a publish/subscribe-based replication scheme together with freshness predicates to significantly reduce replication costs. This way, OSIRIS can support process-based applications in a dynamically evolving system without limiting scalability and correctness. Experiments have shown very promising results with respect to scalability. In addition, OSIRIS provides a flexible infrastructure that can be extended seamlessly in a modular way. This paper demonstrates the extension towards distributed concurrency control.

Abstract:
Aims and MethodCommunity mental health team (CMHT) services in many Western countries have been remodelled to focus on people with the most severe illnesses and complex problems. Complexity scores using the Matching Resource to Care (MARC2) measure from CMHT cases in 2004–2005 (n=1481) are compared with scores in 1997–1998 (n=3178) in the same locations, before the introduction of the National Service Framework, and before the impact of the creation of integrated mental health trusts in England.ResultsThe 2004–2005 baseline complexity scores are all worse than those in 1997–1998.Clinical ImplicationsIf increased targeting brought about by the National Service Framework and other reforms has led to a greater proportion of people with complex problems in case-loads, what care services, if any, are now being received by people who were in receipt of CMHT services before the reforms?

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to identify the main factors affecting the success of the knowledge replication process in service firms when new units/outlets are created or acquired. Design/methodology/approach The quantitative approach of the study is based on a survey to the first general managers of new hotels integrated in Spanish hotel chains that implement a strategy of knowledge replication. Findings Transfer experience in the region; compatibility between the underlying cultural context of the knowledge and the recipients’ culture; recipients’ absorptive capacity; source’s and recipients’ motivation; and lack of adaptation in the transfer routines are key factors that influence several aspects of knowledge replication success in service firms. Research limitations/implications From an academic point of view, this work identifies the determinants of success in replication processes. Moreover, two dimensions in knowledge replication success have been identified: a functional dimension and an economic one. Industry and survey limitations must be considered. Practical implications Organizations that face a growth process where they want to replicate their corporate knowledge should consider several aspects that seem to be determinants of success in those projects. Originality/value Despite the prevalence of replication-based growth strategies in the service sector, there is a lack of research analyses about this phenomenon in the academic literature. The empirical-based research on knowledge transfer and service firms’ growth is scarce and fragmented. This work provides an integrated view of factors affecting knowledge replication success in new organizational units from an empirical quantitative approach.

Abstract:
Objective: The aim of this study is to identify the frequency, presentation, identification, treatment recommendations and outcome of patients with catatonia in the general hospital setting. Method: All patients seen on a consultation-liaison (C-L) service over a six-month period were screened prospectively for catatonic disorders. Research and DSM-IV criteria for catatonic disorder were applied. Treatment and outcome were naturalistic. Results: Five (1.6%) of 297 patients met restrictive criteria for catatonic disorder. Data were extracted from medical charts. Case reports are presented to reflect the diagnosis and treatment. Extensive medical treatment was required in most cases and most had an unfavorable outcome. Conclusion: Catatonia is infrequent but underrecognized in medical-surgical settings. The C-L clinician should screen for catatonic signs in order to diagnose and treat patients with the catatonic disorders.

Abstract:
The findings of numerous replication studies in economics have raised serious concerns regarding the credibility and reliability of published applied economic research. Literature suggests that economic research often is not replicable because (i) only a small proportion of journals in the field have implemented functional policies on the disclosure of employed datasets and program code, (ii) authors frequently do not comply with these data policies and (iii) editorial offices do not ensure that these policies are enforced. In this paper, we focus on the aspect last mentioned. We empirically evaluate 599 articles published in 37 journals with a data availability policy. We present the share of articles that fall under a data policy, because replication data is needed to verify the published results. Afterwards, we check the journal data archives and supplemental information section of each article for the availability of replication files. For a reduced sub-sample of 245 data-based articles, we check in depth whether the replication files we found are compliant with the requirements of the journal’s respective data policy. Thereby, we are able to determine how much journals in economic sciences enforce their data policies. Our findings suggest a mixed picture: While some journals achieve high compliance rates, a significant share of journals only sporadically provides replication files for data-based research papers. Overall, 47.5% of all articles analysed honour the data policy of the respective journal. Our findings also provide evidence that voluntary data policies are not effective in fostering replicable research.

Abstract:
Due to the growth of internet-connected devices and extensive data analysis applications in recent years, cloud computing systems are largely utilized. Because of high utilization of cloud storage systems, the demand for data center management has been increased. There are several crucial requirements of data center management, such as increase data availability, enhance durability, and decrease latency. In previous works, a replication technique is mostly used to answer those needs according to consistency requirements. However, most of the works consider full data, popular data, and geo-distance-based replications by considering storage and replication cost. Moreover, the previous data popularity based-techniques rely on the historical and current data access frequencies for replication. In this article, the authors approach this problem from a distinct aspect while developing replication techniques for a multimedia data center management system which can dynamically adapt servers of a data center by considering popularity prediction in each data access location. Therefore, they first label data objects from one to ten to track access frequencies of data objects. Then, they use those data access frequencies from each location to predict the future access frequencies of data objects to determine the replication levels and locations to replicate the data objects, and store the related data objects to close storage servers. To show the efficiency of the proposed methods, the authors conduct an extensive simulation by using real data. The results show that the proposed method has an advantage over the previous works in terms of data availability and increases the data availability up to 50%. The proposed method and related analysis can assist multimedia service providers to enhance their service qualities.

Abstract:
Due to the inherent stochastic nature of services execution environment within service oriented systems, a runtime adaptation of the given composition may be required. The authors investigate a runtime service adaptation mechanism based on conditional retries for orchestrated web services. The conditional retry may be issued while a concrete service within composition is executed. The retry could either invoke the same concrete service or a functionally equivalent web service that implements the same task. The authors use dynamic programming to determine the optimal time instances at which the current request should be terminated before request replication. The calculation takes into account different QoS parameters like services' response-time distributions and cost-related parameters, and the solution optimizes the expected revenue of the composite service provider. The authors illustrate the benefits of their approach by numerical calculations, and discuss the impact of considered QoS parameters to the solution at hand.

Abstract:
Efficiency (in term of time consumption) and effectiveness in resources utilization are the desired quality attributes in cloud services provision. The main purpose of which is to execute jobs optimally, i.e., with minimum average waiting, turnaround and response time by using effective scheduling technique. Replication provides improved availability and scalability; decreases bandwidth use and increases fault tolerance. To speed up access, file can be replicated so a user can access a nearby replica. This paper proposes architecture to convert Globally One Cloud to Locally Many Clouds. By combining replication and scheduling, this architecture improves efficiency and easy accessibility. In the case of failure of one sub cloud or one cloud service, clients can start using another cloud under “failover” techniques. As a result, no one cloud service will go down.

Data Grid provides geographically distributed data resources. However, ensuring efficient and fast access to such huge and widely distributed resources is hindered by the high latencies of the Internet. Replication is adopted to address these problems. Aimed to replica creation, a model to decide replica creation opportune moment is introduced, which is based on queuing theory. Through statistical record of the arrival rate of uses, service period, and replicas already created, calculating length of queue, waiting duration time, busy period, service strength and so on, a reasonable creation opportune moment of replica can be obtained.

Abstract:
Cloud computing has recently gained a lot of popularity and attention from the research community. One of the many on-demand services that large-scale applications provide to cloud customers is storage, which accumulates more generated data and subsequently leads to the need for storage. Despite the fact that users can use the cloud to store and provide the type of storage that desire, it still takes a significant amount of time to store and retrieve data due to the large accumulation of data. Due to the need to improve data availability, response time, reliability, and migration costs, the current storage engine needs to be replicated across multiple sites. When copies are properly distributed, data replication speeds up execution. The biggest challenges in data replication are choosing which data to replicate, where to put it, how to manage replication, and how many replicas it needs. Therefore, various studies have been carried out on some data mining-based data replication systems to evaluate replication issues and manage cloud storage. In most cases, data replication in a data mining environment is done using data mining along with a replication algorithm and a data grid policy. In addition, this paper addresses replica management issues and proposes affordable data replication in the cloud that satisfies all Quality of Service (QoS) requirements.

Abstract:
Purpose The dependence on the use of information systems for nearly every activity and functions in the internet is increasingly high. This form of interconnectedness has bolstered national economies, enhanced how governments interact with their citizens and how ordinary people connect with friends and family. However, this dependence has equally resulted to a high rise in vulnerability, threat and risk associated with more use of information and communication technology. Cyber-attacks that have the potential to disrupt or damage information system infrastructure are getting more complex with some level of sophistication. Traditional protection of information system infrastructure is no longer sufficient; systems have proven to be immune to failure or incidents. This paper aims to ensure that there is a continuous availability of services through a fail-safe proof. Design/methodology/approach MYSQL replication technique was used to develop a model based on three-tier layers using the principle of network interdependency and the replication techniques. Tier 1 depicts a Telecom organization serving as service provider that provides internet service to Tier 2 organization – a Bank; Tier 3 is the financial App that can be used by bank staff and customers. The fail-safe mode integrated mechanism enables Tier 3 to continue to render its services in the event of an attack on Tier 1 such as DDoS without disruption. Findings This technique succeeded in mitigating the loss of data if cyber incident occurred or reception of uninterrupted services is countered, which give rise to future master-to-master architecture. Research limitations/implications The study conducted is limited to the design and development of a fail-safe system for interdependent networks or systems using MYSQL replication technique. Originality/value In an interdependent environment such as the cyberspace, the sectors are interdependent for optimal results. The originality of the work ensures that there is availability of services which is sustained and that data integrity is assured using the fail-safe technique based on MySQL replication method.

Data-intensive cloud computing systems are growing year by year due to the increasing volume of data. In this context, data replication technique is frequently used to ensure a Quality of service, e.g., performance. However, most of the existing data replication strategies just reproduce the same number of replicas on some nodes, which is certainly not enough for more accurate results. To solve these problems, we propose a new data Replication and Placement strategy based on popularity of User Requests Group (RPURG). It aims to reduce the tenant response time and maximize benefit for the cloud provider while satisfying the Service Level Agreement (SLA). We demonstrate the validity of our strategy in a performance evaluation study. The result of experimentation shown robustness of RPURG.

Abstract:
Data loss occurs due to crashing, correlated failure, logical failure, power outages and security threats. Several techniques (e.g. NoBackup, WARBackup and LocalRecovery) are being used to recover data locally. And, strongly consistent Cloud services (SCCS) must provide good performance and high availability. However, conventional strong consistency replication methods have the limitation of availability of replicated services when recovering huge amount of data across wide area links. There is a need for remote recovery mechanisms for high availability of service/data, because distributed nature of cloud infrastructures. To address these issues, the article proposes a hierarchical system architecture for replication across a data center, and employs the backward atomic backup recovery technique (BABRT) for local recovery and remote recovery for high availability of the cloud services/data. A mathematical model for BABRT is described. Simulation results show that BABRT reduces the storage consumption, recovery time, window of vulnerability and failure rates, compared to other recovery models.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to investigate service modularization in a manufacturing firm, identifies service modularization processes and examines how these processes change the service module characteristics. Design/methodology/approach The study is based on a longitudinal case study (2008-2017) of a manufacturing firm. The development of six service modules was analyzed using data from interviews with key informants, informal meetings and internal documentation. Findings This study suggests five service modularization processes, and that service module characteristics, such as standardization and interconnectedness, change in different ways depending on the service modularization processes used. It further identifies two service modularization routes that each combine the service modularization processes in unique ways with replication as a key process to improve both standardization and customization. Practical implications This study elaborates a framework for service modularization, which can serve as a guideline for developing service modules. It also highlights the differences between product and service modularization, suggesting that the role of service module characteristics such as standardization and customization is specific for services. Originality/value This longitudinal case study (2008-2017) provides empirical evidence on service modularization and extends existing knowledge on service modularization processes and how they influence service module characteristics.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to measure the customer satisfaction via service quality dimensions as a whole and individually in the context of stock broking services. A non probability convenient sampling approach has been used in the study. Respondents have been restricted to those who have the experience of trading in stock market through stock brokers. The sample consisted of 229 valid individual customers from Bhopal (MP), India through structured self-administrated questionnaire. Convergent validity, discriminant validity and reliability of the collected data were measured before testing of the research model. An exploratory factor analysis has been conducted using principal components analysis to determine the dimensions of financial service quality. A linear regression was performed to test the relationship between the service quality dimensions and customer satisfaction. The findings suggest that service quality as a whole and individually have a significant impact on customer satisfaction. The results of the study provide useful information for managers to improve service quality which leads to customer satisfaction. The findings were solely on stock broking services from Bhopal (MP) in India which impacts its generalisability. Replication of the present study might be required in other stock broking markets, to improve generalisability using larger samples. Another potential area for future research could be the link between service quality dimensions, customer satisfaction and customer loyalty and customer retention at stock broking services. The study is important considering the economic advantages of satisfying and retaining current customers as opposed to seeking for new customers which is essential in stock broking services. The paper contributes to the literature on stock broking services in India.

Abstract:
Human service nonprofits are a major provider of social services in this country, spending billions of dollars each year implementing programs to improve outcomes for their clients. Unfortunately, these programs are typically not rigorously evaluated to determine whether they are having their intended effect. Many obstacles make it challenging to rigorously evaluate services provided by these nonprofits, including evaluation costs, limited access to data, and small sample sizes, but these obstacles are surmountable. Policy-makers could accelerate the pace and quality of evidence building by providing more resources for impact evaluations, streamlining and standardizing access to key administrative data, and expanding support for the replication of effective programs. Better evidence of what works for human service nonprofits will ultimately mean more effective programs at the national level.

Abstract:
Vehicular Edge Computing (VEC) provides users with low-latency and highly responsive services by deploying Edge Servers (ESs) close to applications. In practice, vehicles are usually moving rapidly. To ensure the continuity of services, edge service migration technology is in high need, by which an application, infrastructure or any edge-hosted applications or services are not locked into a single vendor and allowed to shift between different edge resource vendors. Nevertheless, due to their complex and dynamic nature, real edge computing environments are error and fault prone and thus the reliability of edge service migrations can be easily compromised if the proactive measures are not taken to counter failures at different levels. In this paper, we propose a novel fault-tolerant approach for Dynamic Redundant Path Selection service migration (DRPS). The DRPS approach consists of path selection algorithm and service migration algorithm. The path selection algorithm is capable of evaluating time-varying failure rates of ESs by leveraging a sliding window-based model and identifying a set of service migration paths. The service migration algorithm incorporates resubmission and replication mechanisms as well and decides edge service migration schemes by choosing multiple redundant migration paths. We also conduct extensive simulations and show that our proposed method outperforms traditional solutions by 17.45%, 13.17%, and 7.22% in terms of ACT, TCR, and AFC, respectively.

Abstract:
This paper summarises the findings of a replication of an earlier study by Van Heerden& Puth (1995), which again confirmed that behavioural and visual identities contributeto the corporate image of South African banking institutions. Perceptions were measuredthrough the same semantic differential used in the 1995 study. Eight factors wereidentified in the replication study, namely social interaction, service, quality, growth, aesthetic characteristics, activeness, liveliness and reputation. A certain degree ofoverlap between the two sets of factors (1995 and replication study) was detected. Thefindings emphasise that banks should nurture social relationships with their customers.

Abstract:
Cloud is an emerging technology that stores the necessary data and electronic form of data is produced in gigantic quantity. It is vital to maintain the efficacy of this data the need of data recovery services is highly essential. Cloud computing is anticipated as the vital foundation for the creation of IT enterprise and it is an impeccable solution to move databases and application software to big data centers where managing data and services is not completely reliable. Our focus will be on the cloud data storage security which is a vital feature when it comes to giving quality service. It should also be noted that cloud environment comprises of extremely dynamic and heterogeneous environment and because of high scale physical data and resources, the failure of data centre nodes is completely normal. Therefore, cloud environment needs effective adaptive management of data replication to handle the indispensable characteristic of the cloud environment. Disaster recovery using cloud resources is an attractive approach and data replication strategy which attentively helps to choose the data files for replication and the strategy proposed tells dynamically about the number of replicas and effective data nodes for replication. Thus, the objective of future algorithm is useful to help users together the information from a remote location where network connectivity is absent and secondly to recover files in case it gets deleted or wrecked because of any reason. Even, time oriented problems are getting resolved so in less time recovery process is executed.

Abstract:
The Hierarchical Service Quality Model (HSQM), developed by Brady and Cronin (2001) to capture the quality of services sector, was used as base to extend it to evaluate Pakistan's banking sector services' quality and its outcomes in the form of banking sector customers'satisfaction, trust and loyalty. Sample included 240 bank-customers of six different randomly selected banks located in Islamabad-Rawalpindi area. A 5-item Likert scale questionnaire was used which yielded data on customers' responses with good reliability tests measuring Cronbach's alphas ranged from acceptable (0.70s) to good (0.80s) and very good (0.90s) levels. Econometrically modeled HSQM's replication coupled with its extensions aiming at to measure various outcomes like customers' satisfaction, trust and loyalty behaved well and yielded statistically significant results. Based on the results, the HSQM extended econometric model is recommended to measure services quality in other sectors.
