Abstract:
With the growing deployment of emergent technologies like software-defined networking, network services are expected to be revolutionized. In this paper, we investigate offering Service Function Chains as a Service (SFCaaS) in NFV environments. We describe the potential business model to offer such a service and then we address the service function chain provisioning and resource allocation problem. As the chain is deployed thanks to virtual machines (i.e., instances) and links, we conduct first a detailed study of the costs of Amazon EC2 instances with respect to their location, size, type and performance. Afterwards, we address the resource allocation problem for service function chains from the SFC provider's perspective. We formulate the problem as an integer linear program aiming at reducing operational costs of the service function chains (i.e., costs of virtual machine instances and links, and synchronization among the instances). To address large-scale instances of the problem, we also propose a new heuristic algorithm to reduce operational costs taking into account the conducted study of the costs of Amazon EC2 instances. We show through extensive simulations that the proposed heuristic significantly reduces operational costs compared to a baseline algorithm inspired by the existing literature.

Abstract:
Service function chaining (SFC) is a mechanism that allows service providers to combine various service functions and exploit the available virtual infrastructure. The best selection of virtual services in the network is essential for meeting user requirements and constraints. This paper proposes a novel approach to generate the optimal composition of the service functions. To this end, a genetic algorithm based on context-free grammar (CFG) that adheres to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standard and Skyline was developed to use in SFC. The IETF uses cases of the data center, security, and mobile network filtered out the invalid service chains, which resulted in reduced search space. The proposed genetic algorithm found the Skyline service chain instance with the highest quality. The genetic operations were defined to ensure that the service function chains generated in the algorithm process were standard. The experimental results showed that the proposed service composition method outperformed the other methods regarding the quality of service (QoS), running time, and time complexity metrics. Ultimately, the proposed CFG could be generalized to other SFC use cases.

Abstract:
In this paper we introduce SNF, a framework that synthesizes (S) network function (NF) service chains by eliminating redundant I/O and repeated elements, while consolidating stateful cross layer packet operations across the chain. SNF uses graph composition and set theory to determine traffic classes handled by a service chain composed of multiple elements. It then synthesizes each traffic class using a minimal set of new elements that apply single-read-single-write and early-discard operations. Our SNF prototype takes a baseline state of the art network functions virtualization (NFV) framework to the level of performance required for practical NFV service deployments. Software-based SNF realizes long (up to 10 NFs) and stateful service chains that achieve line-rate 40 Gbps throughput (up to 8.5x greater than the baseline NFV framework). Hardware-assisted SNF, using a commodity OpenFlow switch, shows that our approach scales at 40 Gbps for Internet Service Provider-level NFV deployments.

Abstract:
New services and ever increasing traffic volumes require the next generation of mobile networks, e.g. 5G, to be much more flexible and scalable. The primary enabler for its flexibility is transforming network functions from proprietary hardware to software using modern virtualization technologies, paving the way of virtual network functions (VNF). Such VNFs can then be flexibly deployed on cloud data centers while traffic is routed along a chain of VNFs through software-defined networks. However, such flexibility comes with a new challenge of allocating efficient computational resources to each VNF and optimally placing them on a cluster. In this thesis, we argue that, to achieve an autonomous and efficient performance optimization method, a solid understanding of the underlying system, service chains, and upcoming traffic is required. We, therefore, conducted a series of focused studies to address the scalability and performance issues in three stages. We first introduce an automated profiling and benchmarking framework, named NFV-Inspector to measure and collect system KPIs as well as extract various insights from the system. Then, we propose systematic methods and algorithms for performance modelling and resource recommendation of cloud native network functions and evaluate them on a real 5G testbed. Finally, we design and implement a bottom-up performance simulator named PerfSim to approximate the performance of service chains based on the nodes’ performance models and user-defined scenarios.

Abstract:
Recent advancements in mobile communication technology have led to the fifth generation of mobile cellular networks (5G), driven by the proliferation in data traffic demand, stringent latency requirements, and the desire for a fully connected world. This transformation calls for novel technology solutions such as Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) to satisfy service requirements while providing dynamic and instant service deployment. MEC and NFV are two principal and complementary enablers for 5G networks whose co-existence can lead to numerous benefits. Despite the numerous advantages MEC offers, physical resources at the edge are extremely scarce and require efficient utilization. In this doctoral dissertation, we first attempt to optimize resource utilization at the network edge for the scenario of live video streaming. We specifically utilize the real-time Radio Access Network (RAN) information available at the MEC servers to develop a machine learning-based prediction solution and anticipate user requests. Consequently, Integer Linear Programming (ILP) models are used to prefetch/cache video contents from a centralized video server. Regarding the advantages of NFV technology for the deployment of NFs, the second problem that this dissertation address is the proper association of the users to the gNBs along with efficient placement of SFCs on the substrate network. Our primary purpose is to find a proper embedding of the SFC in a hierarchical 5G network. The problem is formulated as a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model, having the objective to minimize service provisioning cost, link utilization, and the effect of VNF migration on users' perceived quality of experience. After rigorously analyzing the proposed SFC placement and considering mobile networks' dynamicity, our next goal is to develop an ILP-based model that minimizes the resource provisioning cost by dynamically embed and scale SFCs so that provisioning cost is minimized while user requirements are met.

Abstract:
By virtue of the recent technological developments in cloud computing, more applications are deployed in a cloud. Among these modern cloud-based applications, some require bounded and predictable low-latency responses. However, the current cloud infrastructure is unsuitable as it cannot satisfy these requirements, due to many limitations in both hardware and software. This licentiate thesis describes attempts to reduce the latency of Internet services by carefully studying the currently available infrastructure, optimizing it, and improving its performance. The focus is to optimize the performance of network functions deployed on commodity hardware, known as network function virtualization (NFV). The performance of NFV is one of the major sources of latency for Internet services. The first contribution is related to optimizing the software. This project began by investigating the possibility of superoptimizing virtualized network functions(VNFs). This began with a literature review of available superoptimization techniques, then one of the state-of-the-art superoptimization tools was selected to analyze the crucial metrics affecting application performance. The result of our analysis demonstrated that having better cache metrics could potentially improve the performance of all applications. The second contribution of this thesis employs the results of the first part by taking a step toward optimizing cache performance of time-critical NFV service chains. By doing so, we reduced the tail latencies of such systems running at 100Gbps. This is an important achievement as it increases the probability of realizing bounded and predictable latency for Internet services.

Abstract:
5G and beyond mobile network technology promises to deliver unprecedented ultra-low latency and high data rates, paving the way for many novel applications and services. Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) are two technologies expected to play a vital role in achieving ambitious Quality of Service requirements of such applications. While NFV provides flexibility by enabling network functions to be dynamically deployed and inter-connected to realize Service Function Chains (SFC), MEC brings the computing capability to the mobile network's edges, thus reducing latency and alleviating the transport network load. However, adequate mechanisms are needed to meet the dynamically changing network service demands (i.e., in single and multiple domains) and optimally utilize the network resources while ensuring that the end-to-end latency requirement of services is always satisfied. In this dissertation work, we break the problem into three separate stages and present the solutions for each one of them.Firstly, we apply Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to drive NFV resource orchestration in MEC-enabled 5G architectures for single and multi-domain scenarios. We propose three deep learning approaches to perform horizontal and vertical Virtual Network Function (VNF) auto-scaling: (i) Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) classification and regression (single-domain), (ii) Centralized Artificial Neural Network (ANN), centralized Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) and centralized Convolutional Neural Network-LSTM (CNN-LSTM) (single-domain), and (iii) Federated ANN, federated LSTM and federated CNN-LSTM (multi-domain). We evaluate the performance of each of these deep learning models trained over a commercial network operator dataset and investigate the pros and cons of different approaches for VNF auto-scaling. For the first approach, our results show that both MLP classifier and MLP regressor models have strong predicting capability for auto-scaling. However, MLP regressor outperforms MLP classifier in terms of accuracy. For the second approach (one-step prediction), CNN-LSTM performs the best for the QoS-prioritized objective and LSTM performs the best for the cost-prioritized objective. For the second approach (multi-step prediction), the encoder-decoder CNN-LSTM model outperforms the encoder-decoder LSTM model for both QoS and Cost prioritized objectives. For the third approach, both federated LSTM and federated CNN-LSTM models perform equally better than the federated ANN model. It was also noted that in general federated learning approaches performs poorly compared to centralized learning approaches. Secondly, we employ Integer Linear Programming (ILP) techniques to formulate and solve a joint user association and SFC placement problem, where each SFC represents a service requested by a user with end-to-end latency and data rate requirements. We also develop a comprehensive end-to-end latency model considering radio delay, backhaul network delay and SFC processing delay for 5G mobile networks. We evaluated the proposed model using simulations based on real-operator network topology and real-world latency values. Our results show that the average end-to-end latency reduces significantly when SFCs are placed at the ME hosts according to their latency and data rate demands. Furthermore, we propose an heuristic algorithm to address the issue of scalability in ILP, that can solve the above association/mapping problem in seconds rather than hours. Finally, we introduce lightMEC - a lightweight MEC platform for deploying mobile edge computing functionalities which allows hosting of low-latency and bandwidth-intensive applications at the network edge. Measurements conducted over a real-life test demonstrated that lightMEC could actually support practical MEC applications without requiring any change to existing mobile network nodes' functionality in the access and core network segments. The significant benefits of adopting the proposed architecture are analyzed based on a proof-of-concept demonstration of the content caching use case. Furthermore, we introduce the AI-driven Kubernetes orchestration prototype that we implemented by leveraging the lightMEC platform and assess the performance of the proposed deep learning models (from stage 1) in an experimental setup. The prototype evaluations confirm the simulation results achieved in stage 1 of the thesis.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--Stellenbosch University, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A typical medium-sized service company in South Africa faces definite challenges and misses opportunities in optimising and managing its operational expenses in its sourcing and supply chain. Medium-sized companies generally do not have the benefit of sophisticated in-house procurement divisions and extensive buying power but they still have to optimise their expenses in order to ensure maximum profitability and business longevity. The study addresses these challenges and opportunities by developing and proposing a framework for a typical medium-sized service company that does not have a central procurement function related to the cost optimisation and management of the identified sourcing and supply-chain elements. The research process entails the development of a conceptual framework developed from literature analysis and a representational practical environment as well as the testing, reviewing and validating of the test implementation of the framework. The results flowing from the testing and implementation of the framework are excluded from the research project. The results are displayed in the form of a summary of specific relevant information around each framework element as well as a conceptual framework. Recommendations are made in relation to the implementation and practical adaptation of the framework. It is concluded that a medium-sized service company can successfully optimise and manage its costs in the sourcing and supply-chain elements in the absence of a central procurement function. This requires the effective implementation of the developed framework, which was adapted from sophisticated larger companies. Implementation and the measurement process need to be driven or, preferably, conducted by the medium-sized company owner or management. Buy-in of the framework and the processes around it needs to be obtained from employees, suppliers and other stakeholders.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract The value chain (VC) system is a key way to address important sanitation technological and institutional gaps in production and service delivery and could constitute a natural platform for development actions and also serve as a market systems approach to improve access to safely-managed sanitation. It has been suggested that sanitation could boost local and national economies and global interconnections with a growing recognition that the private sector can play a bigger role in delivering the Sustainable Development Goal for sanitation, and help businesses understand value-added and product opportunities. This book proposes a pathway towards re-thinking the sanitation value chain (SVC) and suggests that it should cover all processes, activities and products of enterprises/actors in the sanitation supply chain that provide value-added services within each stage. Following the Regenerative Sanitation Principles, this book presents a new perspective to the SVC known as the ‘integrated functional sanitation value chain’ (IFSVC) to address operational functions within sanitation systems in combination with sanitation enterprises, operators and external actors that support the growth of the sanitation economy. The underlying premise of this book is that the IFSVC represents a new perspective that would have major social, environmental and economic implications for local, national, regional and global sanitation service delivery. It is hoped that researchers, business leaders, entrepreneurs, government officials and funders will find this book valuable, and be inspired and enabled to carry sanitation work forward in their own spheres of operation. The book gives several examples of encouraging developments, particularly in technical and business model innovation. It is our hope that this book will provide the stimulus for new learning and its application, particularly through cross-disciplinary and cross-sector partnerships that bring together all the skills and capabilities needed to deliver a fully effective IFSVC. Chronic Care for Neglected Infectious Diseases: Leprosy/Hansen's Disease, Lymphatic Filariasis, Trachoma, and Chagas Disease. Pan American Health Organization, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.37774/9789275122501.

Abstract:
In 2016, PAHO's Directing Council, through Resolution CD55.R9, approved the “Plan of Action for Elimination of Neglected Infectious Diseases (NID) and Post-Elimination Actions, 2016-2022.” This Resolution urges Member States to implement a set of interventions to reduce the burden of disease by NID in the Americas by 2022, including “…support promotion of treatment, rehabilitation, and related support services through an approach focused on integrated morbidity management and disability prevention for individuals and families afflicted by those neglected infectious diseases that cause disability and generate stigma.” NIDs can have devastating chronic sequelae for patients, such as disability, visible change or loss in body structure, loss of tissue, and impairment of proper tissue and organ function, among others. All of these can in turn lead to unjustified discrimination, stigmatization, mental health problems, and partial or total incapacity to work, perpetuating the vicious cycle of neglected diseases as both a consequence and a cause of poverty. Patients with chronic conditions caused by NIDs require proper health care in order to prevent further damage and improve their living and social conditions. This should be provided at the primary health care level, as patients suffering from NIDs are often unable to travel to or afford to pay for specialized care services. Care for patients suffering from chronic morbidity caused by NID should be integrated into care for other chronic conditions caused by non-communicable diseases. This manual provides a framework for morbidity management and disability prevention of patients affected by NIDs and gives specific guidance for the proper care of patients suffering from chronic conditions caused by lymphatic filariasis, leprosy, trachoma, and Chagas disease. It is intended to be used mainly by health care workers at the primary health care level, but health workers at more complex and specialized levels may also find it useful.

Abstract:
Abstract A “remake” of C. Wright Mills’ The Power Elite, this book charts patterns of elite domination amid paradigmatic changes in the structuring of U.S. social institutions and political life since the postwar period that lay bare the essentially corrupt and authoritarian nature of neoliberal capitalism and the power elites behind it. Driven by an inexhaustible pursuit of profits and wealth accumulation, power elites of the last half century conceived of and imposed a new form of global capitalism that has positioned the “free market” as an ultimate political and cultural authority. In the process, they have suppressed policies and rules, social movements, and political organizations that might impede profitability and exacted an unspeakable toll on human and planetary life. Similar to Mills, The New Power Elite elucidates the means through which today’s elites accumulate wealth and power, including the subordination of military and governmental systems, media and culture, and labor, finance, and production to “market imperatives.” It departs from Mills, however, in accounting for major transformations in the political geography of corporations and labor, the rise of finance capital, and role of U.S. imperialism in the structuring of global capitalism. And, unlike Mills, the book argues that while the American State, mass media, and cultural institutions can still operate as a sites of contestation, political, military, and cultural institutions today should not be considered as autonomous from market forces, as their principal function is to serve the interests of capital and operate on its behalf.

Abstract:
Tieto skutočnosti jednoznačne naznačujú potrebu existencie kvalitných učebných textov, ktoré by prijateľným spôsobom umožnili študentom získať potrebné informácie a vedomosti v tejto vednej discipline. Želáme príjemné a podnetné čítanie a štúdium. URL: www.unibook.upjs.sk The textbook "Bioenergetics" should serve as an introduction to the study of bioenergetics. This field of science is currently highly actual, as the results of the bioenergetics research in recent years clearly show that bioenergetics processes in living systems can "serve" not only to transformation of energy, but also affect the course of processes such as apoptosis, aging, origin and development of many diseases (especially neurodegenerative). These facts clearly indicate the need for the existence of quality teaching texts that would allow students to acquire the necessary information and knowledge in this scientific discipline in an acceptable way. For the above mentioned reasons, we decided to create these textbooks, which are in the form of ten chapters, which naturally and logically follow each other. One chapter basically presents one lecture within the course of Bioenergetics, which is realized at the Faculty of Science of the Pavel Jozef Šafárik University in Košice at the master's and doctoral degree of the study program "Biophysics". At the same time, these texts can also be used for teaching in the study subject Biochemistry, which is taught in the bachelor's and master's degree programs of the study programs "Biochemistry" resp. “Biophysics”. We would like to express our conviction that these textbooks could in some way also help researchers working in the field of the energy transformation in biological organisms and the phenomena associated with this transformation. These textbooks present knowledge about the basic concepts of bioenergetics, the mechanisms of processes such as glycolysis and the Krebs cycle (in addition to a detailed and comprehensive description of these processes, there is also a general view of the interconnectedness of these processes and their incorporation into a compact view of the overall energy transformation in biological organisms), the structure and functionality of biological membranes (this area is necessary for a better understanding of the knowledge presented in the following chapters). In the following chapters, the textbook deals with the description of the structure and function of mitochondria, with great emphasis on the properties and mechanisms of functioning of the four complexes of the respiratory chain and ATP-synthase. These complexes create the basis for the existence of the "most important" process in bioenergetics, oxidative phosphorylation. In the final two chapters, the mechanisms of the processes that produce photosynthesis, its light and dark phases, are presented. There is relevant information about this "second" most important bioenergetics process taking place in many biological organisms and providing the possibility of transforming the energy of electromagnetic radiation into energy "hidden" in the chemical bonds of certain chemical molecules. We want to express our conviction that the textbooks "Bioenergetics" will be a good "helper and inspirer" for many students who want to learn as much as possible about the fascinating structures and mechanisms for energy transformation in living systems, without which it would not be possible existence of life as we know it.

Abstract:
AbstractService Function Chaining (SFC) in a cloud-native environment is becoming essential as more users move towards clouds today. Cloud-native environments utilize container-based microservices to provide software solutions. Integrating SFC with container-based microservices introduces new challenges. This paper exploited Network Service Mesh (NSM) framework features to create a service function chain on a multi-node Kubernetes cluster. We focus on the design and implementation of SFC in Kubernetes using NSM. Also, we deployed our custom-built containers in the Kubernetes cluster to create a service function chain. Hence, we demonstrate how an SFC is designed in a cloud-native environment rather than a traditional NFV/SDN approach. Furthermore, to evaluate the performance, we compare different frameworks that support SFC in Kubernetes, highlighting the advantage and disadvantages of each framework.

Abstract:
AbstractGlobally there is a care crisis in terms of the quantity of care needed for an aging population and the quality of both the care provided and work conditions of those providing this care. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed and heighted this crisis of care. In this chapter we review the issue with a particular focus on long-term care (LTC) facilities and the type and skill mix of labour, including the degree to which immigrant workers are over-represented in this sector. We offer some conceptual reflections on elder care as a matter of social justice and ethics in terms of those needing and providing care. These concerns take on a specific global dimension when we understand the transnationalisation of care, or the care provisioning function of what are termed global care chains. We contextualise how this migrant labour is positioned within this sector through international comparisons of funding models for LTC, which also allows us to understand the structural conditions within which this globally-sourced workforce is positioned. We then highlight two significant contributing factors to the current LTC crisis that were intensified and exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic using Ontario, Canada, as an example: the role of the private sector and the unsustainable extraction of profits from this service, and the gendered and racialised devaluing of migrant labour so essential to the sector.
