Daley, David, and Saskia Van der Oord. Behavioural interventions for preschool ADHD. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198739258.003.0035.

Full text
Abstract:
The evidence supporting the validity and stability of ADHD during the preschool years is now considerable and, coupled with mounting evidence indicating long-term impairments and economic cost of ADHD, provides a clear rationale for early intervention during the preschool years. While medication is an evidenced-based intervention for older children with ADHD, higher side effects and lower levels of efficacy in preschool children make medication a less attractive option. This chapter presents the behavioural treatment options available for preschool children with ADHD and reviews the evidence base supporting their use, focusing on ADHD, conduct problems, school readiness, parenting behaviour, and parental wellbeing as outcomes. Mediators and moderators of behavioural treatments for preschool children are evaluated, with a focus on the lack of clear mediation and moderation evidence. Finally, important clinical and service delivery considerations are explored, including specialist versus generic types of behavioural interventions, mode of intervention delivery, and dose effects.

Full text
Abstract:
Managing Personality Disordered Offenders: A Pathways Approach describes the development and implementation of the Offender Personality Disorder (OPD) strategy in the UK. It begins by reviewing the existing evidence base for interventions for personality disordered offenders in the UK and elsewhere, before outlining the principles and requirements of the strategy and how it has been implemented in the community and secure settings in London and south-east England by the London Pathways Partnership (LPP). The LPP is a consortium of four mental health trusts working together with the probation and prison services to deliver community and secure OPD services: individual chapters, written by leaders within the LPP and wider OPD pathway, address key aspects, including staff selection and training; case identification and formulation; intervening in the community and in secure settings; service user involvement; and commissioning and joint working. Each chapter includes an authoritative review of the relevant evidence base, together with consideration of available options and the rational for the approach chosen for services in London. This is followed by a practical ‘how to do it’ guide and review of what has worked and what has not during the first four years of service delivery. Each chapter includes a section on evaluation and proposals regarding possible ‘next steps’. The book concludes with a formulation-based analysis of whether or not the OPD strategy has had any impact on its stated outcomes and how these might be re-evaluated as the mechanisms by which change is achieved in the pathway become better understood.

Abstract:
Key points• The ageing of the population will increase patient demands for acute hospital beds, a scarce and expensive resource.• Health and social care service options delivered ‘closer to home’ can improve patient care and reduce older people’s demands for acute hospital beds by preventing acute events and providing an alternative.• The growth of such service options has created a more complex health and social care landscape.• Therefore, to improve the patient experience and to ensure their timely access to appropriate care, innovations for improving the integration of services for health and social care need to be developed and evaluated.• Further increasing the evidence base about care closer-to-home service options and ways of improving their integration represents a shared agenda for service commissioners, providers, and academics.

Susskind, Richard. Online Courts and the Future of Justice. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198838364.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In Online Courts and the Future of Justice, Richard Susskind, the world’s most cited author on the future of legal services, shows how litigation will be transformed by technology and proposes a solution to the global access-to-justice problem. In most advanced legal systems, the resolution of civil disputes takes too long, costs too much, and the process is not just antiquated; it is unintelligible to ordinary mortals. The courts of some jurisdictions are labouring under staggering backlogs - 100 million cases in Brazil, 30 million in India. More people in the world now have internet access than access to justice. Drawing on almost 40 years in the fields of legal technology and jurisprudence, Susskind shows how we can use the remarkable reach of the internet (more than half of humanity is now online) to help people understand and enforce their legal rights. Online courts provide 'online judging' - the determination of cases by human judges but not in physical courtrooms. Instead, evidence and arguments are submitted through online platforms through which judges also deliver their decisions. Online courts also use technology to enable courts to deliver more than judicial decisions. These 'extended courts' provide tools to help users understand relevant law and available options, and to formulate arguments and assemble evidence. They offer non-judicial settlements such as negotiation and early neutral evaluation, not as an alternative to the public court system but as part of it. A pioneer of online courts, Susskind maintains that they will displace much conventional litigation. He rigorously assesses the benefits and drawbacks, and looks ahead, predicting how AI, machine learning, and virtual reality will likely come to dominate court service.
