Kamisaka, Yuko, and Hege Wergedahl. Nordisk barnehageforskning 19, no. 1 (April 26, 2022): 82–102. http://dx.doi.org/10.23865/nbf.v19.254.

Abstract:

Grosse, Sven. "Melanchthon and Servet."

Abstract:
Abstract In 1521, Melanchthon preferred to adore the Trinity rather than investigate it. However, already in 1523 he revealed his conception of his object of adoration to be a fairly classical and Augustinian one. Michael Servet emerged in 1531 with his critique of the classical doctrine of the Trinity, in which he reduced the concept of „person“ to a mere speaking part or representation of the Deity. Melanchthon became aware of Servet’s doctrines in 1533 and immediately became involved in studying Servet and developing his theology in a defense of the classical doctrine of the Trinity. His first major argument was that the Bible describes Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit as divine and simultaneously distinct from God the Father. The second was that the Bible demanded the adoration of Christ and that to adore was to accord the honour of divinity. Melanchthon’s doctrine of the Trinity proved to be practically-minded and was thus a presupposition for the crucial doctrine of justification. Melanchthon presented the same argument in a letter addressing sympathisers of the Reformation in Venice in 1539, demonstrating that Servet’s books were already known in the city at the time and that Melanchthon perceived a need to combat them.

Chaves, Joao. "The Servetus Challenge." Journal of Reformed Theology 10, no. 3 (2016): 195–214. http://dx.doi.org/10.1163/15697312-01003001.

Abstract:
This piece focuses on how the challenge that Servetus’s Trinitarian thought posed to reformers in general and Calvin in particular illustrates the oftentimes overlooked similarities between their interpretative frameworks. Although many works on the Servetus-Calvin affair have been produced, such works focus on the dissimilarities between Servetus and Calvin. I will argue that there is a significant similarity between Servetus’s and Calvin’s hermeneutical presuppositions insofar as both thinkers not only do not acknowledge the tentative nature of their scriptural interpretations but also allow their respective hermeneutic to be guided by sources that were produced by people who belonged to a time when, according to their respective convictions, the church was still able to properly recognize true scriptural teaching.

Abstract:
This article considers the extent of John Calvin’s involvement in the trial of Michael Servetus at Vienne (1553). Calvin is held responsible for Servetus' arrest and the accusations against him at the trial of Vienne. During this trial Servetus was convicted of heresy and was burned in effigy, since he had escaped. The letter of de Trie, the period preceding the trial, and the proceedings of the trial of Vienne are looked at to determine whether the allegations of Calvin’s unjust involvement in the trial of Vienne are justified. This article contends that Calvin did not play any direct role in the conviction of Servetus at the trial of Vienne.

Abstract:
Michael Servetus was a theologian, physician, astrologer, and editor. In the latter capacity he edited two editions of Ptolemy’s Geographia, to which he added some apparatus and several articles that described European countries and peoples. Following in the footsteps of medieval and Renaissance geographical writers before him, Servetus did his research less by travelling and more by reading. His “original” pieces, like the works of the authors upon whom he drew, were thus a patchwork of quotations and borrowings from earlier books. This article examines both what Servetus said about Great Britain, a place he never visited, and the nature and quality of the information that he, his predecessors, and his followers provided for their readers. Such an examination helps us understand the way a learned polymath such as Servetus worked in composing his heretical critique of the Trinity and in gaining the insights that led him to make the first European description of the circulation of blood through the lungs.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractSeveral prophecies of the late fifteenth-century visionary Tecla Servent involved her in the politics of her day. When the Duke of Gandía took a wife, his mother-in-law and later the Duchess herself sent for Tecla and asked her to pray that God bless the marriage with children. In one of her ensuing visions, Tecla saw the Lord place a child among the Duchess's skirts. Inasmuch as the Duchess of Gandía was a cousin of Ferdinand the Catholic and the Duke was the Pope's son, the conception of an heir was of utmost importance to papal-Aragonese relations. Through Tecla's prophecies, the private sphere of the visionary intersected with the public sphere of international politics.
