The general provisions concerning the design of production sites of an auto repair enterprise are outlined, the features of the design of production sites of auto repair production are described. The main goals and objectives of the completion of the final qualification work by students of secondary educational institutions, the sequence of its development are indicated. The structure of the calculation and explanatory note, compiled during the performance of the final qualification work on the design of production sites for the repair of various facilities and for the disassembly and assembly of assembly units, is considered in detail. The issues of technological calculations of production sites are considered in detail. The features of the design of production sites of classes I, II and III are indicated, differences in the organization of work of these sites are shown, the features of calculations used in the development of their projects are given, examples of calculations are given. The development and design of the design part are considered. The measures for occupational health and safety, fire safety and environmental protection are listed. The appendices provide extensive reference material used in the development of the final qualifying work. Abstract This volume brings together studies that contribute to our knowledge about the role functional elements play in syntactic changes, and the semantic and functional features that are the driving force behind the changes. Parameter resettings, structural reanalyses, and changes in the feature specification of functional heads are explored related to the functional sequence of the clausal as well as the nominal and adpositional domains. The chapters in this book discuss ‘microdiachronic’ syntactic changes that often have implications for large-scale syntactic effects, such as word order variation and change, the emergence (and lexicalization) of syntactic projections, grammaticalization, and changes in information structural properties. The volume contains case studies of individual languages (English, German, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Latin, Portuguese, and Romanian are included) as well as discussions of cross-linguistic phenomena. The studies heavily rely on digital corpora of historical or dialectal data. Speech recognition is concerned with converting the speech waveform, an acoustic signal, into a sequence of words. Today's approaches are based on a statistical modellization of the speech signal. This article provides an overview of the main topics addressed in speech recognition, which are, acoustic-phonetic modelling, lexical representation, language modelling, decoding, and model adaptation. Language models are used in speech recognition to estimate the probability of word sequences. The main components of a generic speech recognition system are, main knowledge sources, feature analysis, and acoustic and language models, which are estimated in a training phase, and the decoder. The focus of this article is on methods used in state-of-the-art speaker-independent, large-vocabulary continuous speech recognition (LVCSR). Primary application areas for such technology are dictation, spoken language dialogue, and transcription for information archival and retrieval systems. Finally, this article discusses issues and directions of future research.

In the modern anesthesia machine, there are various safety checks in place to help prevent the delivery of a hypoxic gas mixture to the patient. They include the pin index safety system (PISS), diameter index safety system (DISS), failsafe valve, oxygen-nitrous oxide proportioning system, oxygen supply failure alarm, flowmeter sequence, and, most distally, the oxygen analyzer. The PISS is a feature in the high-pressure system. The DISS, failsafe valve, and oxygen failure alarm are in the intermediate-pressure system. The flowmeters, proportioning system, and oxygen analyzer are in the low-pressure system. This chapter undertakes a discussion of the distinct role of each feature and their limitations.

In the late 1990s, the first complete sequences of two bacterial genomes were published. From the analysis of the sequence data, it became possible to elucidate all the biochemical reactions that these bacteria could undertake and all the molecules that they could synthesize, many of which had hitherto been unknown. Now that hundreds of microbial genomes have been sequenced, we can decipher those biochemical features that make an organism a successful pathogen and recognize common strategies for overcoming host defences. We also can get insights to how each pathogen evolved. The objective of this book is to put the new sequence-derived information in the context of the natural history of the organisms. That is, to tell a story and get a sense of how each organism evolved, what it can do, and how it interacts with its environment. Each chapter is devoted to a different pathogen, be it viral, bacterial or eukaryotic, and describes how they infect plants and animals but particularly humans.

Originating within the generative Principles and Parameters tradition in the study of language, nanosyntax was developed starting in the early 2000s by Michal Starke. Deploying a radical implementation of the cartographic “one feature–one head” maxim, the framework aims at a fine-grained decomposition of morphosyntactic structure, thus laying bare the building blocks of the universal functional sequence. This volume aims at making three contributions. First, it presents the framework’s constitutive tools and principles and explains how nanosyntax relates to cartography and to Distributed Morphology. This chapter tracks how artists investigate the discourse of reproduction not simply to explore dual meanings, but rather to consider how the politicized concept of reproduction functions as a contested means for conveying gender identity. In her painted quilt sequence The Slave Rape Series, Faith Ringgold uses reproduction to establish a visual interrogation of Black gender identity and to probe the implications of the commitment to reproductive paradigms. Her paintings of the pregnant body create the opportunity to recast the images circulating in political discourse, which favor restrictive conceptions of gender expression, especially in regard to femininity. On the other hand, Toni Morrison's novel Paradise (1997) moves the questioning of reproduction to the realm of narrative and enhances the exploration of masculinity. Meanwhile, Spike Lee's feature film She Hate Me (2004) evokes nationalist strategies by offering an exploration of reproduction as a viable mechanism for resolving social anxieties about gender identity and for rearticulating Black social agency.

It discusses the foundations on which nanosyntax was conceived, such as the “one feature–one head” maxim and the universal functional sequence (fseq). It also provides a brief comparison of theoretical and terminological issues in nanosyntax vs. the competing framework of Distributed Morphology. It is seen that the syntactic component according to nanosyntax unifies aspects of (what are traditionally called) syntax, morphology, and formal semantics. This is reflected in the tools used to probe linguistic structure in the nanosyntactic approach, such as morphological decomposition, syncretism, and containment. The chapter also discusses the technical details of the syntax–lexicon relation, detailing the matching or spellout process and Starke’s view of spellout-driven movement. A philosophical account of risk, such as this book provides, states what risk is, which attitudes to it are rational, and which acts affecting risks are rational. Attention to the nature of risk reveals two types of risk, first, a chance of a bad event, and, second, an act’s risk in the sense of the volatility of its possible outcomes. The distinction is normatively significant because different general principles of rationality govern attitudes to these two types of risk. Rationality strictly regulates attitudes to the chance of a bad event and is more permissive about attitudes to an act’s risk. Principles of rationality governing attitudes to risk also justify evaluating an act according to its expected utility given that the act’s risk, if any, belongs to every possible outcome of the act. For a rational ideal agent, the expected utilities of the acts available in a decision problem explain the agent’s preferences among the acts. Maximizing expected utility is just following preferences among the acts. This view takes an act’s expected utility, not just as a feature of a representation of preferences among acts, but also as a factor in the explanation of preferences among acts. It takes account of an agent’s attitudes to an act’s risk without weakening the standard of expected-utility maximization. The view extends to evaluations of combination of acts, either simultaneous or in a sequence. Applications cover hedging, return-risk evaluation, professional advice, and government regulation.

This chapter discusses the morphosyntax of French, Modern Greek, Serbo-Croatian, and Bulgarian complementizers equivalent to English that. From long-distance wh-extractions across complementizers in these languages, it is shown that (i) the morpheme complementizer is composed of features that are hierarchically ordered according to a functional sequence (fseq) (see Baunaz 2015, 2016a; Baunaz and Lander to appear); (ii) the complementizer morpheme lexicalizes structures of different sizes; (iii) the distribution of complementizers is governed by veridicality (see Baunaz 2015, 2016a); (iv) the complementizer morpheme is syntactically active. The basic template for complementizers that I argue for is F4 > F3 > F2 > F1. Evidence in favor of this template comes from crosslinguistic patterns of syncretism and featural Relativized Minimality (Starke 2001; Rizzi 2004; Haegeman 2010, among others). Evidence in favor of different realizations of the complementizer is provided by means of long-distance extractions across declarative embedded clauses.

Phenomenology, biology, and the human sciences combine in this work to support an original systematic philosophy of nature, organic life, and human existence. A sequence of increasingly complex modes of boundary relations—or relations between the insides and outsides of a thing—is presented and analyzed. The sequence supports distinctions between living and nonliving things, plants and animals, lower animals and higher ones, and nonhuman animals and humans. “Organic life” is defined and its characteristic features—the “organic modals”—are elucidated. The boundary relations of living things can be understood as “positionality”—that is, orientation to and within an environment. Human positionality is both centric (as in many animals) and excentric insofar as the relation between inside and outside is something to which the human being is “positioned.” This excentric positionality enables human beings to stand outside of the boundaries of their own body, a possibility with significant implications for human knowledge, culture, religion, and technology. Through articulation of the essential features of organic life, its distinction from and relation within nonliving nature, and the distinctions among living things, including between the nonhuman and human, the work provides foundations for a philosophical anthropology.

Magnetic resonance imaging is essential for urological imaging. It offers excellent soft tissue contrast and resolution, allowing manipulation of tissue contrast with different image weighting and sequences. The multiplanar aspect of MRI allows image acquisition in different planes and degrees of obliquity to best exhibit pathology. The basic physics of MRI is explored initially with explanation of image weighting, sequences, and diffusion-weighted imaging. The chapter is then divided into renal, bladder, and prostate MRI imaging. The paragraphs on renal MRI outline renal mass analysis and include characterization and assessment of cystic and fat-containing lesions. Staging of renal carcinoma with MRI is also discussed, along with its advantages compared with CT staging. This chapter explores the foundation of Bob Fosse’s dance style through his years as a young performer in the waning days of vaudeville, his teenage appearances in Chicago area nightclubs and burlesque houses, and the dance act he formed with his first wife, Mary Ann Niles. Fosse appeared in three films at MGM, the last of which, Kiss Me, Kate, featured a short sequence of his choreography that displayed aggressive jazz stylings, burlesque traces, and witty comic touches. It also showed the influence of Jack Cole, the American dancer and choreographer who had created his own dance idiom incorporating movement from Middle Eastern, Indian, Afro-Cuban, and other ethnic dance traditions into an athletic, sexually charged jazz dance style that was highly influential.

This chapter discusses use of the epic aristeia as a narrative element in Homer and the Cycle. At least four secure examples of aristeiai in the Cycle reveal a simpler structure than examples from Homer’s Iliad. This “cyclic” form of the aristeia typically features as champion a Trojan ally who eventually falls at the hands of a foremost Achaean warrior. Differences between cyclic and Iliadic aristeia-sequences reflect the persons and themes involved, but also bear an intimate relationship to the different narrative requirements of shorter poems. I argue further that the simpler cyclic form of the aristeia can be seen to underlie the more complicated and varied Homeric examples.

Two bodies of research focus on advice messages and interactions. Conversation analysts provide detailed descriptions of advice messages and interaction sequences in naturally occurring interactions. Supportive communication scholars theorize how advice message features influence recipients’ emotional, problem solving, and relational outcomes. The two research paradigms differ, and although both contribute to an understanding of advice messages and interactions, they remain relatively unintegrated. This chapter reviews major findings from each paradigm. To demonstrate the potential for integration, two research programs that incorporate conversation analytic findings into theorizing about supportive communication are reviewed. The chapter concludes by proposing how to further extend theorizing about advice as supportive communication by integrating conversation analytic insights.

This study examines how the particular character of Grail romances follows from the incongruous meeting of courtly and Christian discourses, combined for the first time in LeConte du Graal, Chrétien de Troyes’s last, unfinished romance. The romancer’s unsettling inclusion of religious issues within Arthurian narrative coincides with a new turn toward the Bible’s literal and historical sense observable in both Christian and Jewish biblical exegesis. By investigating features shared by romance and exegesis, we can glimpse how a number of issues involving representation and interpretation disseminate through later Grail stories, as the romancer’s inaugural gestures structure how rewriters negotiate the complexities of their enigmatic model. Divided into three sections, the chapter first treats the littera’s historical aspects and its arrangements (order, sequence, context). The second section examines the shifting relation between literal and allegorical senses, in order to explore the exegetical surprises of Chrétien’s prologue in the third.

This chapter illustrates how syncretisms can be used as a tool to diagnose hidden structure inside what is usually considered an indivisible unit, i.e. a negative marker. Based on semantic, scopal, stacking, and functional properties of negative markers, it is proposed that negative markers can be classified in four groups: scalar quantity markers, classifier markers, focus markers, and tense markers. A study of these four different types of markers in a typological sample shows that meaningful syncretism patterns can be detected. If the markers are ordered in such a way that syncretic markers are contiguous and that no ABA patterns arise, then the derived sequence reflects the natural semantic scope of negation, i.e. from wide to narrow scope or from narrow to wide. This result leads to a decomposition of a negative marker into five syntactico-semantic features, i.e. Neg, Q, Class, Foc, and T.

This article investigates multi-vortex states in mesoscopic amorphous superconductors with different geometries by means of scanning SQUID microscopy. It first describes the setup of the scanning SQUID microscope used in magnetic imaging of superconducting vortices before discussing the physical properties of amorphous superconducting thin films. It then presents the results of experiments showing the formation of multi-vortex states in mesoscopic dots of weak pinning, amorphous MoGe thin films, along with the formation of vortex polygons and concentric vortex rings in mesoscopic disks. It also considers the concept of multiple vortex shells and its applicability to vortex patterns observed in mesoscopic circle and square dots. The article highlights some of the key features of mesoscopic superconducting dots, including commensurability effect, multiple shell structures, repeated packing sequences, inclusion structural hierarchy, and pinning effect.

The faculty to generate patterns is a basic feature of living systems. This chapter concentrates on patterns used in the context of control of behavior. Spatio-temporal patterns appear as quasi-rhythmic patterns mainly in the domain of locomotion (e.g. swimming, flying, walking). Such patterns may be rooted directly in the nervous system itself, or may emerge in interaction with the environment. The examples given show simulation of the corresponding behaviors that in most cases are applied to robots (e.g. walking in an unpredictable environment). In addition, non-rhythmic patterns will be explained which are linked to internal states and are required to select specific behaviors and control behavioral sequences. Such states may be relevant for top-down attention and may or may not be accompanied with subjective experiences, then called mind patterns. Specific cases concern the application of an internal body model, as well as states characterized as cognitive or as conscious.

Manuscript Matters illuminates responses to some of John Donne’s most elusive texts by his contemporary audiences. Since examples of seventeenth-century literary criticism prove somewhat rare and frequently ambiguous, this book emphasizes a critical framework rarely used for exhibiting early readers’ exegeses of literary texts: the complete manuscripts containing them. Many literary manuscripts that include poems by Donne and his contemporaries were compiled during their lifetimes, often by members of their circles. For this reason, and because various early modern poems and prose works satirize topical events and prominent figures in highly coded language, attempting to understand early literary interpretations proves challenging but highly valuable. Compilers, scribes, owners, and other readers—men and women who shared in Donne’s political, religious, and social contexts—offer clues to their literary responses within a range of features related to the construction and subsequent use of the manuscripts. This study’s findings call us to investigate more extensively and systematically how certain early manuscripts were constructed through analysis of such features as scripts, titles, sequence of contents, ascriptions, and variant diction. While such studies can throw light on many early modern texts, exploring artifacts containing Donne’s works proves particularly useful because more of his poetry circulated in manuscript than did that of any other early modern poet. Manuscript Matters engages Donne’s satiric, lyric, and religious poetry, as well as his prose paradoxes and problems—refocusing modern interpretation through an early modern lens.

Of the many ways in which the animation production company Pixar differentiated itself from the classic animated shorts and films produced by Disney, the complete shunning of the Disney musical archetype may be the most pronounced. Pixar replaced the musical numbers and dance sequences with montages and flashbacks, scored with either original music or preexisting songs, furthering Pixar’s near-obsession with nostalgia and resurrection of the distant past. Combining unusually nuanced attention to the soundtrack with a longing for bygone popular culture, the Pixar films show a new stage of development for animated films, taking on the stereotype that Hollywood cartoons are for kids. This chapter explores Pixar’s approach to music and the soundtrack to show how advances in sound design, as well as an evolving approach to film scoring taken by veteran Hollywood composers, have brought a new level of complexity and even respectability to the long-maligned animated feature.

Flow cytometry is a sensitive and quantitative platform for the measurement of particle fluorescence. In flow cytometry, the particles in a sample flow in single file through a focused laser beam at rates of hundreds to thousands of particles per second. During the time each particle is in the laser beam, on the order of ten microseconds, one or more fluorescent dyes associated with that particle are excited. The fluorescence emitted from each particle is collected through a microscope objective, spectrally filtered, and detected with photomultiplier tubes. Flow cytometry is uniquely capable of the precise and quantitative molecular analysis of genomic sequence information, interactions between purified biomolecules and cellular function. Combined with automated sample handling for increased sample throughput, these features make flow cytometry a versatile platform with applications at many stages of drug discovery. Traditionally, the particles studied are cells, especially blood cells; flow cytometry is used extensively in immunology. This volume shows how flow cytometry is integrated into modern biotechnology, dealing with issues of throughput, content, sensitivity, and high throughput informatics with applications in genomics, proteomics and protein-protein interactions, drug discovery, vaccine development, plant and reproductive biology, pharmacology and toxicology, cell-cell interactions and protein engineering.
