Abstract:
Sir Brian Pippard was a brilliant experimental physicist with a deep understanding of physics and physical processes; he used this understanding to make pioneering contributions to condensed matter physics. He will be particularly remembered as the first experimenter to map a Fermi surface and for his non-local theories of electromagnetic response in normal metals and superconductors, the latter predating the theory of superconductivity of Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer. Most of his career was spent at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge, where he held the Cavendish Professorship of Experimental Physics from 1971 to 1982. From 1966 to 1973 he was the first President of Clare Hall, then a newly founded graduate college. He died aged 88 years on 21 September 2008.

Full text
Abstract:
David Thouless was one of the leading theoretical condensed matter physicists of his generation. He pointed out (with Kosterlitz) that two-dimensional or quasi-two-dimensional physical systems undergo a completely novel type of phase transition; he developed a highly original approach to the theory of localization of electrons in disordered solids; and with his co-authors pioneered the use of topological considerations in the analysis of many-body systems, a technique that gives a very intuitive understanding of the quantum Hall effect and is at the basis of the modern field of topological insulators and superconductors. In 2016 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for ‘theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter’.

Abstract:
Autar Paintal began his scientific career at Lucknow University in India, enhanced it in David Whitteridge's Department of Physiology in Edinburgh and consolidated it in India, where he worked at the Technical Development Establishment, the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences and The Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute of Delhi University. He correctly identified atrial B receptors and by precise experimentation established the properties of atrial A and B fibres, of ventricular afferent fibres and the gastrointestinal sensory receptors. His enduring scientific contribution was to identify J receptors in the lung and to characterize their reflex and sensory actions, both at sea level and at Himalayan altitude. His distinguished contributions to medical science in India and abroad has been marked by the award of numerous honorary degrees and prizes.

Abstract:
Jeffrey Harborne made a major contribution to the discipline of phytochemistry. Originally an organic chemist, he became an academic leader in the biochemistry of secondary metabolites, particularly flavonoids and also other plant phenols. He contributed significantly to areas at the interface between chemistry and traditional areas of plant science, systematics and ecology. His early research was influential on the rise in importance of both plant chemotaxonomy and biochemical ecology.

Abstract:
Kenneth Johnson, born in Barrow in 1925, studied mechanical engineering at Manchester during World War II. After some years in industry and an early appointment back in Manchester, he spent most of his academic career teaching and researching at the Engineering Department of Cambridge University. He was also a long-serving Fellow of Jesus College. He was renowned for the insightful analysis of meticulous experiments in contact mechanics. He was widely acknowledged as the doyen of this area, particularly after the publication of his seminal work of the same name. His major publications included topics in friction and wear, rheology and lubrication, rolling contact and adhesion. Important applications of his insights included the prediction of corrugations and cracks in railway lines. He was gratified when, after many years of dormancy, his ideas in adhesion were used by others to explain the climbing behaviours of insects and other small animals with soft feet. He was a devoted family man, characterized by warm personal qualities that won him many friends around the world.
