Abstract:
Sir Brian Pippard was a brilliant experimental physicist with a deep understanding of physics and physical processes; he used this understanding to make pioneering contributions to condensed matter physics. He will be particularly remembered as the first experimenter to map a Fermi surface and for his non-local theories of electromagnetic response in normal metals and superconductors, the latter predating the theory of superconductivity of Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer. Most of his career was spent at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge, where he held the Cavendish Professorship of Experimental Physics from 1971 to 1982. From 1966 to 1973 he was the first President of Clare Hall, then a newly founded graduate college. He died aged 88 years on 21 September 2008.

Abstract:
Alteration of rainfall patterns is one major impact of climate change. Rainfall events with big precipitation volumes under short periods of time are predicted to become even more frequent in higher latitude regions, including Sweden. One characteristic example of such an intense rainfall occurred between the 5th and 6th of September 2015 in Hallsberg, a city in central Sweden, where approximately 105 mm of rain fell under 24 hours, causing severe flooding in the city. In order to be able to predict flood cases like the aforementioned one, hydrodynamic models are employed to simulate floods and investigate rainfall scenarios so that the competent authorities can take precaution measures. However, due to lack of calibration data most of flood models are not validated and are comprised of substantial uncertainty. This report aims to study the Hallsberg flood event in September 2015 by calibrating a hydrodynamic model using aerial photographs for the flood inundation extent. The utilized model is MIKE 21, which is a 2D overland flow model developed by DHI. Contrary to the common practice in flood studies where inclusion of the infiltration capacity is implemented with an arbitrary reduction of the rain volume, the infiltration module of MIKE 21, which is a new development in the model, was utilized. Apart from the inundation extent, the outputs were also evaluated for the water depth in two points based on a photograph captured from the streets of the affected area, the description of the course of events for the timing of flood’s culmination and the water volume on the pixels that were erroneously simulated as flooded. The results presented a high degree of agreement with the observations. The parameter of surface resistance, expressed as Manning’s “M”, was found to be of paramount importance with the suitable values for undeveloped areas being below 5. In addition, the culverts’ limited capacity played an important role in the flooding of the city and hence including them in the simulations is crucial. Finally, utilization of the infiltration module resulted in a higher accuracy of 8.3% although it can be considered more of an arbitrary deduction of water as some of the parameters used in it are not physically well justified.

Abstract:
On September 21st 2001, the explosion of the AZF factory based in Toulouse, was liable for the death of 30 individuals and caused injuries to thousands of people. One year and half after, we met 53 victims of this technological disaster, these interviews being framed by a prospective and longitudinal research protocol led by the emergency health division of Toulouse (Birmes et al. , 2003). To assess the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), we used a diagnostic structured interview (CAPS): 20 subjects meet PTSD criteria. In examining risk factors involved, we focused on pre-traumatic factors such as : life events, childhood trauma, attachment style and attachment relationships. Adult attachment style in romantic relationships was assessed by the ECR. This self-rated questionnaire provides a categorical measure of the adult attachment style (secure or insecure). Indeed, it assesses individual differences regarding anxiety about abandonment and closeness avoidance. Three quarters of the subjects endorse an insecure attachment style. Anxiety about abandonment is strongly associated with a PTSD diagnostic. After describing attachment influence on the psychological vulnerability process, we provide a qualitative and clinical analysis of the resilience mechanisms used after the disaster. We discuss the psychological impact of a collective trauma on inter-personal relationships and we submit propositions about psychological interventions following trauma

An earthquake (Mw=7.6, ML=7.3) occurred near the town of Chi-Chi in Nantou County in central Taiwan at 1: 47 a.m., September 21, 1999 (local time). The Chi-Chi earthquake produced a rich set of data on surface deformation caused by dislocation of the Chelungpu fault. This study used analytical formulas for a 2-D fault model(Cohen, 1996) and a rectangular fault model (Okada, 1992) to determine the Chelungpu fault dislocation parameters. We compared both the GPS data and integrated strong motion displacement data with the calculated results from the fault models. The Chelungpu fault was divided into three regions in this study. The fault parameters of Section 1(northern part) are : fault length 23.2 kilometers, fault width 20.6 kilometers, dip angle 29 degrees and vector fault slip 11.7 meters; Section 2 (middle part): fault length 13.4 kilometers, fault width 20.6 kilometers, dip angle 29 degrees and vector fault slip 7.6 meter. Section 3 (southern part) : fault length 26.5 kilometer, fault width 20.6 kilometers, dip angle 29 degrees and vector fault slip 5.4 meters. Using these parameters we can obtain the seismic moment and average stress drop as - and 106.1 bars, respectively. The conclusions of this study can be summarized as follows: 1. The Chelungpu fault can be approximated as a simple plane and dipping east. 2. By using a simplified 2-D model we can determine the fault dislocation parameters rapidly. 3. The fault was dipping east and reached a depth of 10 kilometers by comparing the observed and calculated data. 4. The hypocenter of Chi-Chi earthquake was 8 kilometers (CWB), this location is below the fault plane found in this study. This could because our fault slip model is too simple or the depth of hypocenter should be shallower. 5. The co-seismic deformation caused strain changes below the earth surface. We can correlate these strain changes with water level changes during earthquake. There is positive correlations between volume dilatation or contraction and water level changes. 6. From the focal mechanisms of Chi-Chi aftershocks we can find that the stress changes of the Chelungpu fault slip didn’t release completely the regional compressional stress.
