Zarling, Amie Langer, Rosaura Orengo-Aguayo, and Erika Lawrence. Violent Coercion in Intimate Relationships. Edited by Thomas J. Dishion and James Snyder. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199324552.013.31.

Abstract:
This chapter defines violent coercion in romantic relationships as comprising threatening or controlling behaviors such as economic abuse and social isolation, dominance and intimidation, belligerence and humiliation, threats of physical violence, physical violence itself, and sexual violence. This type of coercion occurs in a broad range of intimate relationships—dating, cohabiting, engaged and newlywed couples, separated and divorced couples, and second and third marriages. Even mild and infrequent forms of violent coercion have negative consequences for victims, relationships, and children raised in these homes. There are few empirically supported interventions for violent coercion in committed relationships, and those that do exist are limited in their efficacy. This chapter reviews the wide variation in definitions of coercion in committed relationships, assesses the methods used to measure coercion in committed relationships, reviews traditional treatments and evaluates their efficacy, and delineates recent treatment advances and outline directions for future research.

Abstract:
This book describes a new way of being a couple and a new family form—living apart together—where couples who are committed to one another nevertheless maintain separate residences and finances. Although studied previously in Europe and other areas, LAT has not attracted attention in the United States, although it appears to be as prevalent there as elsewhere. After presenting the research done about LATs in other areas of the world, the book presents the results of the author’s empirical research on this lifestyle—both the results of surveys taken in 2016 and of interviews of LAT couples in 2016 and 2017 in the United States and England, which explore the numbers of LATs, their reasons for living apart, their demographics, the economics of their relationships, and their mutual caregiving. It also compares and contrasts this lifestyle with both commuter marriage and cohabitation. A particular focus is placed on the special role that LAT appears to play in the lives of women, gay males, and couples 65 and older. Ways in which LATs encounter the US legal system currently—primarily with respect to the termination of alimony upon cohabitation—are described and criticized. After discussing what the purposes of family law should be in general, the author proposes a number of legal reforms that should be undertaken to support the caregiving functions LAT partners perform for each other.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Noël Coward’s 1930 comedy Private Lives to illustrate how queer modernist performance might pass as light entertainment in the theatrical mainstream. Written shortly after Coward read Virginia Woolf’s Orlando, Private Lives engages with classical and early twentieth-century ideas about androgyny and in doing so subverts interlinked sexual and aesthetic norms. The play’s main characters, Amanda and Elyot, are ambiguously gendered, yet together form a heterosexual couple that recalls the separated halves of the lost androgyne or third sex of Aristophanes’s myth of love in Plato’s Symposium. This queering of heterosexuality through androgynous male and female “other halves” combines with the play’s emphasis on fleeting moments of present happiness to derail comedy’s traditional movement toward marriage, reproduction, and social continuity, anticipating more recent queer resistance to what Lee Edelman has called “reproductive futurism.” While achieving enduring popular success, Private Lives thus queered comic form and fostered queer spectatorship.

Abstract:
This chapter details the inner workings of spam filters, algorithmic devices that separate desirable messages from undesirable messages. It argues that such filters are a particularly important kind of sieve insofar as they readily exhibit key features of sieving devices in general, and algorithmic sieving in particular. More broadly, it describes the relation between ontology (assumptions that drive interpretations) and inference (interpretations that alter assumptions) as it plays out in the classification and transformation of identities, types, or kinds. Focusing on the unstable processes whereby identifying algorithms, identified types, and evasive transformations are dynamically coupled over time, it also theorizes various kinds of ontological inertia and highlights various kinds of algorithmic ineffability. Finally, it shows how similar issues underlie a much wider range of processes, such as the Turing Test, Bayesian reasoning, and machine learning more generally.
