Abstract:
Dyadic concordance types of intimate partner violence (IPV) in Mexico are examined separately for married/cohabiting women and separated/divorced women using the 2011 National Survey on Household Dynamics. In the context of couples’ anger or conflict, IPV is primarily male perpetrated; at least half of women involved in a violent relationship report male-only violence. The rates of mutual violence are 26.7% for married/cohabiting couples and 29.3% for separated/divorced couples; those of female-only violence are 23.5% among married/cohabiting couples and 8% for separated/divorced couples, most of it consisting of situational IPV. Control is associated with IPV but does not differentiate between male-only and mutually violent couples; however, it does differentiate between nonviolent and female-only couples. Women’s use of violence in relationships tends to be linked with ethnic/racial and age structures and with previous experiences of violence during their childhood and adolescence. The implications for awareness and prevention programs, public policy, and future research are discussed. Existing claims regarding the mutual nature of IPV need to be contextualized because the prevalence of dyadic concordance types of IPV might be contingent on countries’ different levels of gender inequality and different cultural scripts regarding relationships.

Abstract:
The rise of opportunities for females to work outside household settings in Indonesia has changed the division of traditional roles and responsibilities among married couples and thus may affect the quality of marital relationships. This study aims to observe how income earner status (single or dual earner) within families and couple type play roles in marital satisfaction. The participants comprised 224 spousal couples who are analyzed individually and together to categorize couple types measured using the Relational Dimension Instrument and Couple Satisfaction Index. Results indicate that for income earner status, no significant predominant effect on marital satisfaction was observed. The average marital satisfaction scores between couples with single- and dual-income statuses were insignificantly different, suggesting that dual- or single-income status does not have a direct effect on marital satisfaction. Based on couple type, traditional and separated types showed the highest marital satisfaction mean scores and lowest marital satisfaction scores among other types, respectively. These results reveal that interdependence and conflict resolution communication are important aspects in determining marital satisfaction levels among the Indonesian couples who participated in this study.

Abstract:
Japanese communication relies heavily on nonverbal cues and context. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of video-mediated communication (VMC) on communication satisfaction and marital relationships in young couples separated during the perinatal period as they honor the Japanese tradition of Satogaeri Bunben. Couples were assigned to the VMC treatment group ( n = 14) or control group ( n = 13). A mixed-methods approach to data collection and analysis was used. Longitudinal quantitative analysis from the Primary Communication Inventory and Intimate Bond Measure revealed significant differences between the Husband groups. Primary Communication Inventory and Intimate Bond Measure were strongly correlated regardless of group. Qualitative analysis of participant diaries revealed the addition of visual cues helped create a sense of “virtual co-presence,” which was both positive and negative. In conclusion, VMC appears to improve communication in the separated Japanese perinatal couples, especially through the addition of visual cues provided with VMC.

Abstract:
Spousal-residence separation has become a serious social problem in China since the Cultural Revolution. Apart from housing shortages, the government's migration control, through the restriction on urban-household registration, is a main contributor to the separation. Based on the microdata of the 1987 National Population Survey, we find that the variation in spousal-residence separations among Chinese young couples in the mid-1980s is well explained by personal and household factors within a multivariate model. The separations were aggravated by migrations for the reasons of employment or education. Although marriage migrations reduced the number of separations, those who had been married for a short period of time (particularly newlyweds) were more prone to be separated. It is ironic that the higher a person's level of education, the greater the tendency for them to suffer the pain of spousal-residence separation. Household status could also be a very important factor: the lower the household status of a married individual, the more likely that he (or she) would be separated from their spouse.

Abstract:
Small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) are non-coding RNAs involved in RNA modification and processing. Approximately half of the so far identified snoRNA genes map within the intronic regions of host genes, and their expression, as well as the expression of their host genes, is dependent on transcript splicing and maturation. Growing evidence indicates that mutations and/or deregulations that affect snoRNAs, as well as host genes, play a significant role in oncogenesis. Among the possible factors underlying snoRNA/host gene expression deregulation is copy number alteration (CNA). We analyzed the data available in The Cancer Genome Atlas database, relative to CNA and expression of 295 snoRNA/host gene couples in 10 cancer types, to understand whether the genetic or expression alteration of snoRNAs and their matched host genes would have overlapping trends. Our results show that, counterintuitively, copy number and expression alterations of snoRNAs and matched host genes are not necessarily coupled. In addition, some snoRNA/host genes are mutated and overexpressed recurrently in multiple cancer types. Our findings suggest that the differential contribution to cancer development of both snoRNAs and host genes should always be considered, and that snoRNAs and their host genes may contribute to cancer development in conjunction or independently.

Abstract:
This long distance marriage describes a physically separated situation where one partner has to settle in another place with certain reasons and goals such as job demands, education and others. The obstacles that can occur during this long-distance domicile marriage relationship are as follows, the couple does not feel happy, negative moods and emotions, less time together, family roles have not gone well even in fatal cases such as divorce. This study aims to improve subjective well-being for couples undergoing long-distance marriage relationships with a problem solving approach. The research design was carried out using a literature study related to problem solving approaches to increase subjective well-being for couples who are in long-distance marriage relationships. The results of this study indicate that problem solving is an effective alternative approach in increasing subjective well-being in long distance marriage.

Abstract:
Many government programs have implicit penalties or subsidies for marriage. For example, many couples pay higher income taxes when married than their combined tax liabilities as single filers, while many other couples receive a marriage subsidy because their joint taxes fall with marriage. Likewise, most low-income couples are eligible for higher welfare benefits if they are separated rather than married. This article discusses the marriage penalty, with a particular focus on tax and transfer programs. Why does it exist? Who faces it? To what extent does it affect marriage and labor market behavior? What tradeoffs are involved in reducing it?

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the use of video-mediated communication (VMC) to support couples separated during classic Satogaeri Bunben. Satogaeri Bunben refers to the Japanese tradition when a pregnant woman leaves her own home to return to her parents' home during the prenatal period, while her husband often stays behind in the couple's house. When a couple geographically live apart during Satogaeri Bunben, it may decrease father-infant attachment and the negatively impact the marital relationship. VMC was selected as the supportive intervention for couples choosing Satogaeri Bunben in this study because: 1) it provides additional visual cues, which are particularly important because Japanese communication is highly contextual and often more nonverbal than verbal, 2) the addition of visual cues allow husbands the opportunity to see their infant, because they cannot talk, and 3) Japan has one of the best broadband systems worldwide. The specific aims were to explore VMC during Satogaeri Bunben in relation to father-infant attachment and the marital relationship and to describe VMC experiences of Japanese couples separated during Satogaeri Bunben. A comparative case study design with a mixed methods approach to data collection and analysis was used. The specific mixed methods approach used was a [QUAL + quan] triangulation-convergence model. For the qualitative data, the primary source of data was the Participant Diary. The primary sources of quantitative data included three instruments: 1) Taiji Kanjyo Hyotei Syakudo (TKHS), 2) Intimate Bond Measure (IBM), and 3) Primary Communication Inventory (PCI). The PCI was translated into Japanese for this study using a committee approach. Four couples were participated in this study. Data collection for each couple took approximately two to three month to complete. Qualitative data analysis divided the couples in two groups: 1) the engaged group, who were very attentive each other's feelings and 2) the detached group, who were inattentive. The PCI scores further supported the existence of two groups. However, the TKHS and IBM scores were mixed. The limitations included a small sample size and lack of variability in sample characteristics, and short time frame. This study was also the first time to use a newly translated PCI in Japanese. This study successfully explored the use of VMC to support couples choosing Satogaeri Bunben focusing on decreasing the impact of the separation of the couple and later the separation of the husband from his new infant. The qualitative and quantitative findings provided a first glimpse into four couples' feelings and VMC experiences during Satogaeri Bunben, especially in relation to father-infant attachment and the marital relationship. The use of VMC provided ongoing virtual, rather than physical co-presence, which may help couple's communication and relationship during their separation, as they transitioned to parenthood.

Abstract:
Relationship separation is prevalent in Western society and ongoing problems for adults and children are common, resulting in high personal and social costs. A literature review revealed that no existing measure of separation adjustment assessed multiple domains of separation adjustment, and was psychometrically sound. Additionally, a literature review revealed that few studies have investigated change in separation adjustment over time using cognitive predictors. This thesis is a program of research investigating separation adjustment in recently separated adults. Five studies were conducted with three main aims: (1) to develop a multidimensional, psychometrically reliable and valid measure of separation adjustment; (2) to assess the trajectory of separation adjustment over time; and (3) to test the hypothesis that certain cognitive variables predict the trajectory of separation adjustment. A conceptualisation of separation adjustment was developed consisting of the following five domains: Connection to the former partner, loneliness and emotional negativity (referred to as lonely negativity), parenting negotiation, parent-child relationship and general psychological adjustment. The Problems After Separation Test (PAST) was developed to reflect the first four of the five domains. In Study 1, 268 participants separated for up to 18 months, were recruited to assess the factor structure and internal consistency of the PAST. In Study 2, 209 participants were recruited to assess the stability of the factor structure, and temporal stability. In Study 3, participants from Study 2 were used to obtain convergent and divergent validity. The results of the first three studies showed that separation adjustment is a multidimensional construct, and that the PAST is a reliable and valid measure of separation adjustment. Study 4 aimed to assess the trajectory of separation adjustment over a 6 month period using the PAST and another measure of general psychological adjustment. Participants from both Study 1 and 2 were used, and a longitudinal cohort sequential design was employed. The sample consisted of three cohorts: those separated for up to six months, those separated between 6 and 12 months, and those separated between 12 and 18 months. The results showed that connection to the former partner, lonely negativity, and general psychological adjustment improved over time, but parent-child relationships and parenting negotiation were stable, and chronic parenting problems were common. Men showed greater parent-child relationship problems than women, possibly because men were most likely to be the non-resident parent. Participants separating from a de facto relationship reported only slightly more problems on lonely negativity, general psychological distress and parent-child relationships than participants separating from a marriage. Study 4 also provides information on clinical and reliable change, suggested cut-offs that might be used to define normal, moderate and severe adjustment problems, and attrition analyses. Using participants from Study 2, Study 5 aimed to assess cognitive predictors of change on connection to the former partner, lonely negativity and psychological distress. The cognitions assessed at each data collection were dysfunctional attitudes, attachment style, causal attributions, threat appraisal, and self-efficacy. Causal attributions were obtained by asking participants "For three minutes tell my about the problems you had in your relationship and what lead to the separation". The responses were transcribed, a coding manual was devised, and inter-rater reliability of coding was good. Cross-sectionally, the majority of cognitions were associated with one or more domains of separation adjustment, however longitudinally, cognitions did not predict change in separation adjustment over a 6-month period. Cognitions themselves were found to be somewhat variable, which is not surprising given that stressful life events, such as relationship separation would alter cognitions. Other variables that might be responsible for changes in separation adjustment trajectory are discussed. The results of the combined 5 studies have both theoretical and practical implications. Theoretically, separation adjustment is a construct made up of distinct domains which have different trajectories. Connection, lonely negativity and psychological adjustment generally represent transient problems. Although the current research found that a non-trivial minority of participants continued to show distress on these domains two years post separation. On the other hand, parenting negotiation and the parent-child relationship was a chronic problem for many separated people, particularly men. Practically, the results of the current research suggests that most therapeutic attention should be directed towards improving parenting adjustment post separation. Limitations of the current research and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
Let G be a vertex-weighted undirected graph. We aim to compute a minimum weight subset of vertices whose removal leads to a graph where the size of each connected component is less than or equal to a given positive number k. If k = 1 we get the classical vertex cover problem. Many formulations are proposed for the problem. The linear relaxations of these formulations are theoretically compared. A polyhedral study is proposed (valid inequalities, facets, separation algorithms). It is shown that the problem can be solved in polynomial time for many special cases including the path, the cycle and the tree cases and also for graphs not containing some special induced sub-graphs. Some (k + 1)-approximation algorithms are also exhibited. Most of the algorithms are implemented and compared. The k-separator problem has many applications. If vertex weights are equal to 1, the size of a minimum k-separator can be used to evaluate the robustness of a graph or a network. Another application consists in partitioning a graph/network into different sub-graphs with respect to different criteria. For example, in the context of social networks, many approaches are proposed to detect communities. By solving a minimum k-separator problem, we get different connected components that may represent communities. The k-separator vertices represent persons making connections between communities. The k-separator problem can then be seen as a special partitioning/clustering graph problem

Abstract:
Given a graph G = (V U T, E) with V U T the set of vertices, where T is a set of terminals, and a weight function w, associated with the nonterminal nodes, the multi-terminal vertex separator problem consists in partitioning V U T into k + 1 subsets {S, V1,..., Vk} such that there is no edge between two different subsets Vi and Vj, each Vi contains exactly one terminal and the weight of S is minimum. In this thesis, we consider the problem from a polyhedral point of view. We give two integer programming formulations for the problem, for one of them, we investigate the related polyhedron. We describe some valid inequalities and characterize when these inequalities define facets. Using these results, we develop a Branch-and-Cut algorithm for the problem. We also study the multi-terminal vertex separator polytope in the graphs decomposable by one node cutsets. If G is a graph that decomposes into G1 and G2, we show that the multi-terminal vertex separator polytope in G can be described from two linear systems related to G1 and G2. This gives rise to a technique for characterizing the multi-terminal vertex separator polytope in the graphs that are recursively decomposable. Moreover, we propose three extended formulations for the problem and derive Branch-and-Price and Branch-and-Cut-and-Price algorithms. For each formulation we present a column generation scheme, the way to compute the dual bound, and the branching scheme. Finally, we discuss four variants of the multi-terminal vertex separator problem. We show that all these variants are NP-hard and for each one we give an integer programming formulation and present some class of valid inequalities

Abstract:
This thesis studies the synchronization properties of delay-coupled motifs of neurons or neuronal populations. It is found that two elements indirectly bidirectional-connected through a dynamical-relaying mediator can robustly synchronize their activity at zero-lag. The effect is studied in special well-known circuits of the brain: cortical networks, thalamocortical circuits, and hippocampal-cortical networks. The foundations of the mechanism are ascribed to the influence of resonant sources: a pair of directly bidirectional-coupled elements. In the presence of non-negligible latency, the coupled pair tends to synchronize in anti-phase. This prevalent property intrinsically endows each of the elements with a potential capability to optimally induce isochronous synchronization between commonly driven elements. This, so-called Resonance-Induced Synchronization, is consistently observed in distinct systems, whenever geometrical frustration is absent of the structural architecture

Based on the concept of role theory, this study was aimed at exploring the relations between work role values, work role commitment and job performance of dual-career separated couples. In addition, considering individual differences in work-family conflict between couples, work-to-family conflict and family-to-work conflict are also selected and examined as possible moderating effect on the relationships between work role commitment and job performance. Appropriate scales were used to conduct surveys among dual-career separated couples from diverse cities and various organizations in Taiwan. Total 330 questionnaires were sent to 115 dual-career separated families.277 participants returned valid responses for further analysis and the effective rate was 83.94%. The results revealed that no matter the staying group (wife) or the leaving home group (husband), work role values had significant positive impacts on work role commitment; work role commitment had also significant positive impacts on job performance. However, only work role commitment of the leaving home group (husband) had the mediating effect on the relation between work role values and job performance... Family-to-work conflict of the staying group (wife) moderate the relationship between work role commitment and job performance, that is, the staying group (wife) with highly family-to-work conflict decreased the positive relationship between work role commitment and job performance.

In accordance with Article 15 of Income Tax Act, where the spouse of a taxpayer whose support deduction may be made in accordance with Article 17 of this Act has any income as provided in the preceding Article, the taxpayer shall include such income in his/her income tax return. Marriage and family serve as the foundation on which our society takes its shape and develops and are thus institutionally protected by the Constitution (See J.Y. Interpretation No. 554.) Tax discrimination based on marital status, which imposes heavier economic burdens on married couples, is equivalent to a marriage penalty and thus contravenes the intent of the Constitution to protect the institutions of family and marriage. The author began by proving the status’ original intentions are to reflect the saving effect of a household unit, to avoid illegitimate income splitting, to lower the cost of taxation and to generate sufficient fiscal revenue. However, the saving effect of a household unit, if any, does not necessarily occur when a couple live together, since people’s life styles and spending habits vary. Then, the author examined whether the separated couple has practical difficulties in filing a joint return and paying the tax together or not. At the end of the thesis, the author urged the legislation efforts to provide further guidance and clarification to insure an enduring and unimpaired system of marriage and family after J.Y. Interpretation No. 696.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter focuses on the issue of shared physical custody (SPC) in the broader context of coparenting interventions. To identify if and how these interventions address the issue of SPC, we provide a systematic overview of the currently available types of coparenting interventions after marital dissolution. To be selected, the interventions had to be published in peer-reviewed journals, target separated or divorced parents, integrate work on coparenting, and include a custody focus within the intervention curriculum or as a targeted outcome. Finally, they had to be subject to empirical evaluation. As a second step, using a case study, we investigate how the issue of SPC may be addressed before divorce, during couple therapy. We describe the therapy sessions to highlight the factors that may protect or undermine the development of a cooperative coparenting relationship while separating, and eventually create a positive shared-custody scenario after divorce. We also analyse the couple’s progress regarding individual symptomatology and coparenting satisfaction based on self-reported questionnaires and on the quality of their observed coparenting interactions. From a therapeutic perspective, this chapter aims to deepen our understanding of the challenges and opportunities of coparenting during and after separation and its intertwinement with the issue of SPC.

Abstract:
The short range coupling in metamaterials occurs via the electric and magnetic fields due to the close proximity of the neighboring resonators. The electric field mainly couples through the gaps of SRRs, while the magnetic field couples through the circumference [1]. In this work we will focus on the near field inductive coupling in metamaterials. The first problem we have studied the effect of displacements between the resonators inside the unit cell of planar coupled metamaterials. The metamolecule design consists of two planar split- ring resonators (SRRs) which are coupled through the near fields. The numerically simulated transmission spectrum demonstrated split resonances due to the resonance mode hybridization effect. With increase in displacement between the near fields coupled SRRs, this metamaterial system shows a transition from coupled to uncoupled state through merging of the split resonances to the single intrinsic resonance [2]. In another problem we have discussed the near field coupling between the pair of split ring resonators (SRRs) in broadside coupled configuration. The metamaterial design is comprised of two orthogonally twisted broadside coupled SRRs separated by a thin micro-scale polyimide layer (Fig. 1(a)). We analyze the interaction between the meta-layers numerically and analytically by displacing resonators w.r.t. each other. In this system too we have observed split resonances along with frequency tuning of resonances caused by the mode hybridization (Fig. 1(b)) [3]. Such ability to tune resonances should be significant in the development of frequency agile THz devices along with other applications.

Abstract:
Polarization bistability has been proposed as having a number of advantages over conventional schemes.1 We have investigated polarization switching in a Fabry-Perot cavity filled with an aligned nematic. In this nonlinear, birefringent cavity, the transmittance for each polarization is a single valued function of the irradiance inside the cavity. This couples the two polarizations so that, unless sufficiently separated spatially, they switch simultaneously. Although limiting the range of possible applications, this coupling may be used to advantage to implement some optical latches.

Abstract:
Newfound attention has been given to solute transport in nanochannels. Because the electric double layer (EDL) thickness is comparable to characteristic channel dimensions, nanochannels have been used to separate ionic species with a constant charge-to-size ratio (i.e., electrophoretic mobility) that otherwise cannot be separated in electroosmotic or pressure-driven flow along microchannels. In nanochannels, the electrical fields within the EDL cause transverse ion distributions and thus yield charge-dependent mean ion speeds in the flow. Surface roughness is usually inevitable during microfabrication of microchannels or nanochannels. Surface roughness is usually inevitable during the fabrication of nanochannels. In the present study, we develop a numerical model to investigate the transport of charged solutes in nanochannels with hundreds of roughness-like structures. The model is based on continuum theory that couples Navier-Stokes equations for flows, Poisson-Boltzmann equation for electrical fields, and Nernst-Planck equation for solute transports. Different operating conditions are considered and the solute transport patterns in rough channels are compared with those in smooth channels. Results indicate that solutes move slower in rough nanochannels than in smooth ones for both pressure-driven and electroosmotic flows. Moreover, solute separation can be significantly improved by surface roughness under certain circumstances.

Abstract:
We investigate the diffraction of a three-level atom from a "walking" light wave composed of counterpropagating traveling waves of different frequencies. The coupling of the two nondegenerate internal ground states by means of an off-resonant Raman transition resonantly couples the initial external momentum state to only one other momentum state. This happens even in the Raman-Nath regime, where the interaction time is short enough that momentum transfer is not constrained by phase-matching conditions. The final momentum state depends on the initial internal state of the atom and the relative directions of the two traveling waves. By using multiple diffraction regions, this process can be used to coherently split a beam of atoms into two beams that are widely separated in momentum space. This type of beam splitter would be useful in the building an atom interferometer.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper, a mathematical representation is proposed to further understand the dynamic behavior and risk factors associated with vibration-assisted drilling (VAD) technology. The proposed Timoshenko beam model, which characterizes VAD technology, consists of two passive, counter-rotating coaxial rotors operating simultaneously, subjected to a stochastic excitation. In this regard, a finite element technique was incorporated to determine the physical parameters of the governing equation of motion, where the shear and rotary effects, as well as the gyroscopic couples generated perpendicular to the axis of rotation, were accounted for. Further, the relative velocity between the coaxial rotors was accounted in the equation of motion, which induced a modification on the stiffness and damping parameters. A fourth-order Runge-Kutta method was utilized to estimate the response and power spectra for soft and compact formations. Results indicated that resonance conditions due to gyroscopic effects manifest at soft and compact formations during drilling, however, at soft formations, the natural frequencies separated at lower RPMs, while at compact formations, higher RPMs were required to induce instabilities.

Abstract:
Abstract Shock waves from underwater and air explosions are significant threats to surface and underwater vehicles and structures. Recent studies on the mechanical and thermal properties of various phase-separated elastomers indicate the possibility of applying these materials as a coating to mitigate shock-induced structural failures. To demonstrate this approach and investigate its efficacy, this paper presents a fluid-structure coupled computational model capable of predicting the dynamic response of air-backed bilayer (i.e. elastomer coating – metal substrate) structures submerged in water to hydrostatic and underwater explosion loads. The model couples a three-dimensional multiphase finite volume computational fluid dynamics model with a nonlinear finite element computational solid dynamics model using the FIVER (FInite Volume method with Exact multi-material Riemann solvers) method. The kinematic boundary condition at the fluid-structure interface is enforced using an embedded boundary method that is capable of handling large structural deformation and topological changes. The dynamic interface condition is enforced by formulating and solving local, one-dimensional fluid-solid Riemann problems, which is well-suited for transferring shock and impulsive loads. The capability of this computational model is demonstrated through a numerical investigation of hydrostatic and shock-induced collapse of aluminum tubes with polyurea coating on its inner surface. The thickness of the structure is resolved explicitly by the finite element mesh. The nonlinear material behavior of polyurea is accounted for using a hyper-viscoelastic constitutive model featuring a modified Mooney-Rivlin equation and a stress relaxation function in the form of prony series. Three numerical experiments are conducted to simulate and compare the collapse of the structure in different loading conditions, including a constant pressure, a fluid environment initially in hydrostatic equilibrium, and a two-phase fluid flow created by a near-field underwater explosion.

Full text
Abstract:
We use the single photon Young's doubleslit experiment as an example. The accepted result of this experiment is that a photon interferes only with itself. Some accepted concepts still remain puzzling, however. Examples include the fact that there is no energy loss when a photon's wave passes "simultaneously" through the slits, the single photon's indivisibility versus its wavefront's separability into two parts, and the sudden collapse of a broad wavefront into a photon. An alternative interpretation is proposed. Based on the quantization of a radiation field, one postulates that a vacuum (zero-point) mode can be activated, which may become an EM wave if it is energized by many photons. Thus, a photon is not independent before a measurement but is a unit of energy h "dressed" on a vacuum mode. By using the quantized field approach, one shows that a vacuum mode coherently couples to other vacuum modes by means of the interaction with the two slits. It is as though the incident mode is separated into two secondary modes, which interfere on the screen. The pattern is "invisible" because there is no energy detector to detect it. Energizing the incident vacuum mode by photons automatically leads to the energization of the "invisible" pattern by "guiding" some of the incident photons through the two slits individually and onto the screen.

Ruosteenoja, Kimmo. Applicability of CMIP6 models for building climate projections for northern Europe. Finnish Meteorological Institute, September 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.35614/isbn.9789523361416.

Full text
Abstract:
In this report, we have evaluated the performance of nearly 40 global climate models (GCMs) participating in Phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). The focus is on the northern European area, but the ability to simulate southern European and global climate is discussed as well. Model evaluation was started with a technical control; completely unrealistic values in the GCM output files were identified by seeking the absolute minimum and maximum values. In this stage, one GCM was rejected totally, and furthermore individual output files from two other GCMs. In evaluating the remaining GCMs, the primary tool was the Model Climate Performance Index (MCPI) that combines RMS errors calculated for the different climate variables into one index. The index takes into account both the seasonal and spatial variations in climatological means. Here, MCPI was calculated for the period 1981—2010 by comparing GCM output with the ERA-Interim reanalyses. Climate variables explored in the evaluation were the surface air temperature, precipitation, sea level air pressure and incoming solar radiation at the surface. Besides MCPI, we studied RMS errors in the seasonal course of the spatial means by examining each climate variable separately. Furthermore, the evaluation procedure considered model performance in simulating past trends in the global-mean temperature, the compatibility of future responses to different greenhouse-gas scenarios and the number of available scenario runs. Daily minimum and maximum temperatures were likewise explored in a qualitative sense, but owing to the non-existence of data from multiple GCMs, these variables were not incorporated in the quantitative validation. Four of the 37 GCMs that had passed the initial technical check were regarded as wholly unusable for scenario calculations: in two GCMs the responses to the different greenhouse gas scenarios were contradictory and in two other GCMs data were missing from one of the four key climate variables. Moreover, to reduce inter-GCM dependencies, no more than two variants of any individual GCM were included; this led to an abandonment of one GCM. The remaining 32 GCMs were divided into three quality classes according to the assessed performance. The users of model data can utilize this grading to select a subset of GCMs to be used in elaborating climate projections for Finland or adjacent areas. Annual-mean temperature and precipitation projections for Finland proved to be nearly identical regardless of whether they were derived from the entire ensemble or by ignoring models that had obtained the lowest scores. Solar radiation projections were somewhat more sensitive.
