Full textCreated during the first months of the Islamic Republic in April 1979, the Revolutionary Guard Corps, made up of a constellation of revolutionary militias that were sometimes rivals among themselves, had to ensure its survival in the face of the various threats that surrounded it, whether emanating from counter-revolutionary groups, the conventional army (artesh), the Provisional Government (February-November 1979) or the first President of the Republic Beni Sadr (February 1980-June 1981). For this purpose, during the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988), the young Legion created a historiographic school based on Sacred Defense (Defāʿ-e moqaddas), which designates the Iranian defense of the front and rear, set up by propaganda as a divine army to fight Iraqi troops. This historiography of the Sacred Defense gave rise to a model on which the Legion has based its institutions, culture, economy, scientific methodology and military doctrine since the 1980s. This thesis retraces the history of the Sacred Defense model since 1981 - when a department of Legion history was created - using the traces left by Big Data. Built around three areas - history, economics and warfare - this work aims to show how the Legion has drawn on the Sacred Defense narrative to create new normative frameworks in the Islamic Republic of Iran, first through its cultural policy and then through its military doctrine for thinking about soft warfare (jang-e narm) and informational warfare. In the absence of direct access to the field for academic research, this history thesis sheds light on the wealth of digital sources found on the Web and social networks, which are often unexplored yet essential for reconstructing the history of the Revolutionary Guard Corps, still little-known in the historiography of contemporary armies and Iran. Subjected to various quantitative and qualitative treatments, these digital sources are the subject of considerable methodological reflection in this thesis, notably on the use of automatic data processing
