Abstract:
This thesis investigates to what extent Swedish architecture of today is planned and designed in consideration to the human senses. A few decades ago the human senses had the light directed to itself in the world of architecture. But what about in the 2020’s, is the light still on or has sensory architecture fallen into oblivion? The objective of the thesis has been to map out whether the visual sense is currently dominating, together with closely related aspects such as whether architectural specialization or the architect’s sex affects how the senses are seen upon, how present the human senses are in today’s Swedish academic architectural programs and what effect this could have on the architecture of tomorrow.  The research method encompasses two structured, quantitative surveys; one aimed at professional architects and one aimed at architectural students/teachers. 114 professional architects responded and 48 students.  The surveys concluded that the visual sense is in fact considered the most important by the respondents and therefore hold a leading position. The human senses are overall considered very important for the user experience, despite this they are not often discussed within the professional field, displaying a lack of debate. Further analyzes establish that professional architects sometimes meet resistance and a lack of understanding among other occupations they collaborate with. The abstract nature of the human senses and the difficulties measuring them mean they can easily be downgraded to “optional aesthetics” by other occupational groups.  Teachers at the academic architectural programs also has an important standing in weighing up, through their teaching, for the limited presence of aspects of the human senses in the current required reading at the universities.

Abstract:
9 actions - Sensoric measures for eternal efficiency is a project negotiating with the consequences of modernist urban planning and its infrastructure which has produced phenomenons like “non-places”, places which neither become or are used according to the procedure of care that our public spaces require. Situated within this idea, I establish a methodology which is formulated as an eternal site analysis, which showcases the process as total and in constant transition, a perspective that rather than becoming an dogma aims to question the raised methodology in relation to site and the analysis within the field of interior architecture. The methodologies aim to embody the sequence of time and space, to bodily engage our senses and re-evaluate the relation to the surrounding environment. This is captured in 9 actions inspired by methods within performance, architecture and installation art. The sequence is examined with different mediums, such as filmmaking, drawings, 3d scans, diagrams, sound recordings, photographs and various other interpretations. A compilation of these acts emphasizes the importance of the methodology of the process and its ability to reconfigure. Concluded and executed at Konstfacks Spring exhibition 2021, visitors were invited to interact with a selection of actions examined during the project. Described below, 3 of the exhibited sequences: “REPET Workshop”; as an act of instruction to understand and question the bodily configuration of normative behaviours in relation to sites. “Pedestrian Measures”; a documented act where the participant was dressed in a reflective apparatus in order to experience irregularities hidden in the spatial hierarchy of sites - as fields of perceived space. “Den gemensamma kroppen”; A collective act, pronounced as the common body of the space. An installation where visitors were invited to dress and interact bodily to engage full focus. A reflective action configuring the use of the body and its sensory abilities in context of common spatial production.

Abstract:
Human existence is highly dependent on the harmonic coexistence of light anddarkness. Their intervention with the built environment defines human visualand spatial perception significantly. Our world is filled with condensed visual information forming a visual-centredreality. Blown away by a high pace daily life, we often fail to appreciate the truequalities of an architectural space and its impact on human psyche. Nonetheless, architecture shall be approached as an gateway to a full embodied existentialexperience; an experience that allows us to explore and reflect on the spacethrough our emotional synthesis. The research material to follow investigates the contribution of darkness, shadow and contrast on the sensorial impact an architectural space conveys.Ultimately, the presented information will reveal the beauty deeply embedded inthe absence of light and the rich gradients created by the purposeful interplayof light and darkness in architecture. My personal long standing interest inarchitecture and human experience funded a driving force to re-evaluate thedirection of lighting design as a emergent and crucial profession for the years to come.

Tomar, Abhineet Singh. "Modern Electrical/Electronic Infrastructure for Commercial Trucks : Generic Input/Output nodes for sensors and actuators in Commercial Trucks." Thesis, KTH, Radio Systems Laboratory (RS Lab), 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-220183.

Abstract:
The presence of electrical and electronic circuits in commercial trucks has increased at a very fast rate during recent decades. With advancements in embedded systems and the introduction of electric controls in the automotive industry, the design of complex electric systems for the vehicles has become one of the major design challenges. In the commercial truck industry, the development cycles are almost a decade long. Therefore, it is a big challenge to introduce a new architecture to accommodate the modern automotive technologies in the upcoming generation of trucks. Currently, the commercial truck industry relies highly on a federated electrical/electronic (E/E) architecture. In this architecture, Electronic Control Units (ECU) are responsible for computation and Input/Output operations. These ECUs are clustered into different domains based on their respective functions. However, these domains are not isolated from each other. These modules communicate with each other using a vehicular network, which is typically a controller area network in the current trucks. In the automotive industry, automation is increasing at a fast pace. As the level of automation increases, the need for high computation also increases, which increases the overall costs. This study aims to address this problem by introducing an integrated E/E architecture where all the computational power is concentrated at one place (or perhaps two or three places to allow for redundancy). This study proposes to introduce a lowcost replacement for the current ECUs with more limited computational power but with generic input/output interfaces. This thesis provides the reader with some background of the current E/E architecture of commercial trucks and introduces the reader to ECUs. Additionally, the relevant network architectures and protocols are explained. A potential solution, based upon the centralized computation based E/E architecture and its implementation are discussed followed by a detailed analysis of the replacements for ECUs. The result of this analysis, if adopted, should result in a reduction of manufacturing and design costs, as well as make the production and maintenance process easier. Moreover, this should also have environmental benefits by reducing fuel consumption.

Abstract:
Atmospheres, events, feelings, every sensation has its own music. And the human being has been highly educated to feel the glamour of them through the hearing sense. We know how a terrifying situation sounds like; what would be the musical accompaniment for a warzone scenario or what is the perfect piece for getting into a state of relaxation. Thanks to music design it has been possible to immerse the spectator into a deeper sensorial perception experience. Users close their eyes, and feel. What if we close our ears, and feel? This thesis aims to transport the qualities of sound that produces feelings into people, to visual values communicated by an approach to architectural lighting design into architectural spaces. A music example is chosen according to the intended emotion to be transposed. It is analysed, evaluated and related to a series of theoretical fundamentals based on visual psychology, human experience, multisensorial connections and lighting design. Laws of correlation are stablished and applied to a case study which ends as a theoretical concept design of an architectural lighting design installation. Closing the document, a statement of guidelines for the conversion of subjective emotional qualities perceived from musical examples is stablished and discussed the use of it in architecture.

Riehm, Mats. "New methods for improving winter road maintenence." Licentiate thesis, KTH, Mark- och vattenteknik, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-26926.

Full text
Abstract:
Winter road maintenance activities are crucial for maintaining the accessibility and traffic safety of the road network during winters. Common winter road maintenance activities include plowing and the use of de-icing agents (e.g. NaCl) to avoid freezing. Effective winter road maintenance strives towards keeping the roads free from snow and ice while reducing negative side effects of winter road maintenance, such as ground water contamination from road salt. Since the weather is decisive for when there is an increased risk of slipperiness, the understanding and continuous observation and forecasts of the road weather are of highest importance. Sensors are commonly installed along roads to measure road weather conditions to support the road maintenance personnel in taking appropriate actions. Different types of errors and uncertainties related to sensors used for frost warnings along roads have been investigated by using a regional scale dataset from south-western Sweden. The results from this study indicate that various types of uncertainties originate from both measurements and models which have a significant impact on the winter road maintenance efficiency. To provide better information about the road surface conditions, a new method for detecting ice formation on roads is presented. Infrared sensors were used to detect temperature patterns which may occur when ice formation take place on a road surface. The investigations demonstrate the potential to improve winter road maintenance by introducing new methods to better describe the road surface conditions.

Abstract:
Attefall-house: Greater than the sum of its parts? I am exploring how to create a small scale space which is more than just a functional space, a space that also provides an architectural experience. I am using the Swedish Attefall-house as a case study. This small, permit-free construction comes with a frame and it has clearly defined rules and limitations. The smallness of it allows for experimentation and in the normally hard-regulated Swedish building climate, it provides an opportunity to try out ideas without having to be too serious. I am trying to create this sensory experience by fusing function and context together with selected architects’ and artists’ ideas. What happens when these seemingly disparate ingredients combine? Will the whole be greater than the sum of its parts?

Myronidi, Despoina. "LIGHT-BEAT: REACTIVE LIGHT FOR THE EMOTIONAL COMFORT OF NEWBORN BABIES." Thesis, KTH, Ljusdesign, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-297961.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a project-based thesis focusing on the investigation of topics related to human newborns and the factors found in their surrounding environment that need to be assessed so as to provide them with a feeling comfort. The objective is to boost their emotional development by the means of light in a close relation to sound so as to provide them with a type of intelligence allowing them to normally interact within a society during their adult life, reassuring social equality and eliminating potential social exclusion due to unexpected behaviours. After researching topics to have a better understanding of the newborn baby and its enclosing environment, a luminaire design solution -functioning with a reactive scheme performed with integrated sound sensors- provided further results to the main topic investigation. The conceptual scheme for the product development was inspired by the connection between the newborn and their life-giver, closely linked to the cross-modality of sensory development before and after birth. Additional results were obtained with light measurement assessments and a parent survey targeting both the intended light quality subjective evaluations and the marketing strength of the designed product. This survey was used -along with other means- as a design evaluation tool at the final stage of the design process. Potential further improvements as well as considerations for a distinct spatial application are discussed in the final part of the thesis. The sustainability aspect covered within this degree project is closely linked to good physical and mental health aspects, clean energy use and efficiency achieved by the integration of input sound sensors and controls, and conscious production and consumption by the proposal of low global footprint materials for the luminaire design. In the conclusions, an overall summary of the thesis outcomes is presented and further research is proposed regarding both the main topic investigation as well as a greater user category that can be related to the light metric assessments that were carried out for this research.
