Abstract:
Alemneh Dejene has aptly subtitled this book “A View from the Village.” Its contribution is in providing the detail borne of experience in one of the world's least forgiving economic environments. It uses extensive personal interviews with peasants to penetrate the logic of existence in rural Ethiopia without relying on emotional or superficial impressions from the interviewer. The author found the right questions to ask and presents the answers he received clearly. He modestly avoids the error of deriving the solutions to Ethiopia's problems from a limited set of observations, even though the observations represent an important addition to the international literature.

Abstract:
In this essay, I discuss poetry as an important style of thinking and exploration. Poetry, I maintain, is a leap, a risk, a gambit that opens unexpected linguistic possibilities and imaginative opportunities. Based on my own experience of teaching poetry, I suggest strategies in this essay for encouraging students to take the kinds of risks that engender sense and confront nonsense. The central claim of this essay is that by creating new and surprising associations, poetry teaches us different and more interesting ways to live in and understand the world.

Full text
Abstract:
Sense and Nonsense (Sens et non-sens) is the first major collection published by Maurice Merleau-Ponty at Editions Nagel in 1948. The triple division of topics dedicated to art, philosophy, and politics will be kept up to his last posthumously published book, Visible and Invisible (1964). Similarly, his specific theory of art is fostered through the years by his interest in Cézanne’s life and work. Cézanne’s Doubt is a key text for any philosophy due to the challenging questions it poses ranging from psychoanalysis and depth psychology to ontology of art, awareness of meaning, predetermination, and freedom borne by the contact of one’s interior and exterior world. With the Doubt we continue to ask ourselves: What is that all-encompassing which is expressed by the small word ‘see’? How to grasp the positive sense of creativity? What is that ‘more enigmatic intertwined inthe very roots of being’? (The text appears for the first time in Bulgarian translated from the French by prof. Lidia Denkova.)

Abstract:
The changes in operative gynecology in the last decades are dramatic in terms of changing strategies from ultraradical techniques like exenterations (Brunschwig, Rutledge) to minimally invasive techniques endoscopic or robotic, but also the level of training in terms of anatomical and surgical skills, which are significantly influenced by medico-legal aspects, legal regulations by a European working time law, thus a significant reduction of personal expertise and a changing attitude towards life goals. Predominantly external circumstances have led to an aggravation of surgical training.

Full text
Abstract:
The meaning of a modifier is influenced by the noun it modifies (Murphy, 1988). To determine how alternative senses of ambiguous adjectives are represented, we examined the processing of noun phrases. Ambiguous adjectives were paired with nouns such that the interpretation of the phrases used the dominant or subdominant sense (e.g., green conference). Participants verified interpretations (Experiments 1 and 2) or made sense-nonsense judgments (Experiments 3 and 4) to target phrases that were preceded by primes that were related to a single sense of the ambiguous modifier. Responses to targets were facilitated by consistent primes, and either unaffected (in the verification task) or facilitated (in the sense-nonsense task) by inconsistent primes. Furthermore, responses were influenced by the strength of both senses. Results support ambiguous word representation as a shared core-meaning with sense specialization.

Full text
Abstract:
The functions and utility of emission and immission standards are discussed as instruments in the management of water quality. Especially the intrinsic a-priori trade-off associated with setting immission standards, the complexity of the cause-effect relationships and the variability of water quality are used as an argument to rely less heavily on such standards. It is argued that simulation, systems analysis, Habitat Suitability Criteria and plan effect matrices are tools that can be implemented and used more effectively.
