Full textThis article discusses the uses of history in the novel El Señor Presidente of Miguel Ángel Asturias and proposes that this is the first Latin American novel that formalizes an elaborate fictional theory of power, which is based on an interiorized social control and on the unlimited capacity of ask all bodies. In this way, the invisible control can materialize in the illusion of freedom and scenes of torture that reveal the sinister relationship between truth and power. Through detailed analysis and close reading of certain key scenes of the novel, an interpretation is offered that explains the dynamics of the characters and the novel as a battle between the fixation of meanings from the political power and its fossilized writing, andthe multiplicity of meanings of life.

Full textThis thesis aims to study the image of the latin americain dictator through three novels : el senor presidente (1946) by m. A. Asturias, el recurso del metodo (1974) by a. Carpentier and el otono del patriarca (1975) by g. Garcia marquez. Its introduction reveals that the image of the latin american dictator has knowna notable aesthetic evolution when one considers the number of novels published before 1975. One of the three chapters corres ponding to the three novels truns not only on the physical and psychological characters but also on the mythical or cultural characters of the considered dictator (mr. President, prime magistrate, patriarch). The two following chapters, show, on the one hand, that the relations of the dictator with his follow-citizens are ambivalent, and with people, these relations are due much more to the myth, religion than to politics. On the other hand, they show that nature itself of dictatorial power, which tends to sacred power, condemns the dictator to live in the most complete solitude. The sixth chapter summarizes the similitudes and divergences between the three dictators. Finally, ther seventh and last chapter aims to showing that true dictators hide behing the dictator of fiction
Full textThis research deals with the origins and architectural projects of the Cultural Sector of Brasília and pursues to understand the antagonisms and similarities between the Pilot Plan conducted by Lucio Costa and the various proposals made by the architect Oscar Niemeyer and other architects to the site, many of them built and consolidated. The Esplanade of Ministries in Brasilia is the most representative site of the urbanism and architecture of the city and fifty-‐three years after the foundation of the capital, the Cultural Sector is the only part of the Esplanade that has not yet completely implemented. This situation associated with the legally protection of the urban site of Brasilia sanctioned in 1991 and the decree number 314/92 establishing exclusivity of architectural intervention to the two authors of Brasilia signs the concern among architects, citizens and government to conciliate the purposes of Costa and Niemeyer. Despite the positive reference of both architects about progressive urbanism model in the idealization of the urban plan of Brasília and even a consensus and maturation of concepts and critiques of modern urbanism, associated with a respectful attitude towards the architectural precedents, there are explicit contradictions between projects executed by Oscar Niemeyer and the pilot plan designed by Lucio Costa that leave until today many unfinished projects and controversial discussions about the sector. The understanding of this process development results in the critical analysis of architectural projects confronted to the Pilot Plan of Lucio Costa and its historical precedents, beyond the inventory organization of the Cultural Sector projects.

Master's thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/20287.
Full textThis dissertation is based on the novel El Señor Presidente by Guatemalan writer Miguel Ángel Asturias and aims at illustrating how this work exposes an entire system and dictatorial structure, taking not only historical, but also stylistic elements into account. Above all, it tries to understand what the true purpose of the work is and the way it suggests itself as a witness of a particular age. Another of the aims is to take up a topic which, despite having already been widely studied, is timeless and therefore deserving of a new approach. The aim is to suggest a vision that allows to extend and update concepts and to systematize studies already carried out. To achieve these purposes, this study will assess the distinctive features and the behavior of the figure represented by the President, as well as any similarities that may exist between him and the dictator Manuel Estrada Cabrera, the president of Guatemala between 1898 and 1920. It will be equally important to exemplify the ways in which the character materializes his power and keeps his tyranny intact, without anyone or anything standing in his way. Since this is a dictator novel, the present thesis will also analyze the main features of the respective literary genre and, particularly, the ones to be found in the novel in question. The study of language is another aspect of particular interest to the development of this study. We will see how language is used in order to create an irrational and suffocating world and to imply a sense of critique throughout the narrative. In order to understand the origin of the universe created by Miguel Ángel Asturias in El Señor Presidente, it becomes necessary to take his previous literary creation into account. Thus, this study further assesses the influence of the essay El problema social del indio, written by himself and published in 1923. According to the author, this was one of the starting points for the subsequent writing of the novel. Another relevant point of focus is the reading of Popol-Vuh, a compilation of ancient indigenous beliefs and myths and seminal work for the creation of El Señor Presidente. At the same time, other equally important studies are considered, in order to understand the author´s oeuvre and this topic in particular.
