Abstract:
UNDERPINNING the debate on the desirable size of secondary schools is the assumption that larger schools are able to offer a more diverse curriculum and thereby provide greater equality of educational opportunity and outcomes. A detailed study of curriculum provision at Year 12 in Victoria showed that the positive relationship between school size and the number of distinct subjects offered was generalisable across ‘mainstream’ schools and all curriculum fields. But many small schools were able to offer a broad range of subjects, and the increase in diversity with school size was uneven across fields. Furthermore, evidence that students actually enrolled in the additional subjects offered in the larger schools was equivocal. It remains problematic whether the apparent diversity in Year 12 subject offerings achieved in the new, larger, secondary colleges in Victoria has led to a more equitable curriculum.

Abstract:
Given the laudable purposes attached to study of Basic Technology in JSS, it is therefore important that students retain the skills and knowledge acquired in the course of studying the subject in the school. However, sadly, the intended effect Basic Technology as a subject in the secondary school system should have, has not been seen in the generation of able manpower readily employable for the economy. The study investigated the difference between the retention ability of male and female senior secondary students in Basic Technology, and how school type (public/private) influence retention. Two research hypotheses were formulated for the purpose of the study. The research design used in carrying out this study is Ex–post facto design. This study covered the Southern Educational Zone of Cross River State, Nigeria. The population of the study comprised all senior secondary school three (SS3) students in the government-owned secondary schools and private-owned secondary schools in the southern educational zone of Cross River State. The sampling technique used is stratified random sampling technique. The sample size for this study was 487 senior secondary school three (SS3) students drawn from fourteen schools in seven local government areas of southern educational zone. The research instrument used in the study is the achievement test. The statistical analyses techniques adopted to analyze the data collected were dependent t-test and independent t-test respectively. Findings of the study showed that there is no significant difference in retention between males and females, public and private schools in senior secondary school in Basic Technology. Based on the findings of the study, recommendations were made which include that there is a need to focus on the female folks in the execution of national policy on education. This study shows that the female folk arecapable of achieving and retaining as much the male folks during learning. Much effort should be made by the government to bridge the disparity between male and female folks in enrolment into and completion of the secondary school education.
The paper discusses the challenges facing history teaching in Nigeria. The scope of the study is limited to private/public schools in Oyo State, Nigeria. The study starts by tracing the problem from the advent of missionaries to Nigeria in which their purpose of establishing mission schools was not to teach African history but to evangelize and to produce middlemen who will act as junior officers. The findings show that history as a subject was in the curriculum of both junior and senior secondary school. However, it was removed from junior secondary school curriculum and remained only in senior secondary school curriculum. Though only few senior secondary schools in Oyo State teach history subject due to lack of adequate knowledge by students in learning African history. Also, due to the reviewed policy, history teachers and textbooks are inadequate. Thus, in this present dispensation in Nigeria, African history education is facing challenges in terms of teaching and learning, apparently on the verge of extinction. The paper concludes by stating the methods of teaching history, prospects and challenges attached to it.

Abstract:
Abstract This study looks at the Chinese-learning experiences of six classroom learners who continued to the end of secondary school in Victoria, Australia, through in-depth interviews. Various systemic deterrents to continued Chinese language study are identified by the participants, including: (1) the schooling journey, including transition between primary and high school and disruption from uninterested students in compulsory classes; (2) the curriculum and the learning demands dictated by the form of assessment; (3) the risk of poor assessment results prejudicing post-school study options, in particular because the cohort includes large numbers of home speaker learners. In Victoria, Australia, a large part of what schools provide is dictated by the metasystem of education and the assessments at which it aims. Thus the structural deterrents to Chinese classroom learner continuation identified are within the power of government agencies to change, in order to enable more of these students to continue.

Abstract:

In this paper, the author examined the relationships between teacher characteristics and teacher teaching skills and the concomitant effects of the relationships on senior secondary school students’ achievement in Physics. It was hypothesized that teachers who were well qualified (that is read physics/mathematics and education in universities) and has considerable years of teaching experience would demonstrate appropriate teaching skills as measured by good lesson preparation, lesson presentation and evaluation of the objectives of the lesson. It was further hypothesized that demonstration of such appropriate teaching skills would encourage students to learn better and do well in Physics. To test these hypotheses, twenty senior secondary school Physics teachers and 863 senior secondary school Physics students were randomly selected from twenty-four senior secondary Schools (SSS) in Ogun and Oyo States, Nigeria. The study lasted for four weeks. Each teacher was observed for 10 lessons and rated using Teacher-students Interaction Observation Schedule. At the end of the fourth week Physics Achievement Test was administered to the students. Results showed that there was a significant and positive relationship between teacher characteristics and teachers’ skill in lesson preparation, presentation and evaluation. Experienced and qualified teachers demonstrated appropriate teaching skills. It was found out that experience and qualified teachers had adequate skills to prepare for physics teaching in schools. It was found that teacher characteristics had influence on students’ achievement in Physics. However, the mediating effect of teacher teaching skills had non-significant effect on students’ achievement in Physics. The results suggest that only qualified people should be employed to teach Physics in senior secondary schools.

Abstract:
Purpose: This article examines how individual, school, and social factors shape the perceptions of students in Senior Secondary Three (SS3; in some schools called Form Six [F6]) toward English private tutoring in Macao. Design/Approach/Methods: This is a comparative study of two F6 classes of an English-medium secondary school and four SS3 classes of a Chinese-medium secondary school in Macao, with a total number of 145 students. Mixed-methods approach (questionnaires and interviews) is employed in the study. Findings: The respondents’ participation in English tutoring is not very intensive. They prefer to receive government-subsidized after-school tutoring taught by their schoolteachers more than fee-paying English tutoring taught by tutors outside. Low level of social competition and high tertiary enrollment rates contribute to this phenomenon. Students’ needs and beliefs in English learning play key roles in determining their receipt of English tutoring. Originality/Value: Teachers may need better understanding of their students’ needs so as to design suitable pedagogies. Schools can consider more fully the types of tutoring that they provide for different kinds of pupils. The government-subsidized after-school tutoring could be a plausible way to reduce educational inequality.

This paper addresses the student support systems available in Chinese schools, with reference to those available in Canadian schools, in order to understand the most effective foundations for academic success and student motivation. The focus of educational support within Chinese and Ontario schools is rooted around times of high-stress exams, such as the Senior High School Entrance Exam (Zhongkao, 中考) and the National Higher Education Entrance Exam (Gaokao, 高考) in China, and the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) Literacy Exam and the Canadian Achievement Tests (CAT) in Ontario. I explore the available means through which schools provide guidance and additional support for students throughout the grades leading up to major examinations. This inquiry involves observation of various Chinese classrooms, research of literature examining stress levels and academic success, and observations of school programs and guidance facilities within the schools and communities.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to assess childrens understanding of plant nutrition. The research was done on a sample of secondary school pupils in the age range of 16 to 19 years in two senior secondary schools in Botswana. The sample contained 137 senior secondary pupils all in their final year of study. These children were above average ability. The children were given a test on plant nutrition composed of two parts namely forced and free responses which were based on the Botswana senior secondary school biology syllabus. After the administration of the test to the pupils, interviews were conducted to give children the opportunity to explain their answers. The majority of children experienced little difficulty in providing accepted ideas about plant nutrition. However, analysis of childrens responses showed that mistakes were often made in the process of where plants make food rather than in the process of how plants make food. In conclusion, suggestions and recommendations were made with the hope that they would help teachers teach plant nutrition in a meaningful way.

Abstract:
This study investigated senior secondary school students’ motivation to learning mathematics and gender as correlates of performance in mathematics. The sample consisted of 315 students from two government senior secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria using the quantitative research method within the blueprint of the descriptive survey research design. Data collected were analysed using percentages, means, standard deviation, independent samples t-test, Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMCC) and standard and stepwise multiple linear regression analysis. Findings from the study revealed that there was a very high level of motivation to learn mathematics among senior secondary schools’ students in Nigeria. There was a significant influence of gender on students’ performance in mathematics but not on motivation to learn mathematics. It was also revealed that self-efficacy, gender and intrinsic motivation were the major significant predictors of performance in mathematics among the sample studied. Based on these findings, future studies in Nigeria should attempt to investigate the psychometric properties of the motivation to learn mathematics scale.

Abstract:
Adolescents are subject to many life changes as their secondary sexual characteristics emerge. Contrary to parents' and society's wishes, these young people are more sexually active then previous generations and thus at greater risk of unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, and related problems. Adolescents enrolled in school have the potential opportunity to learn ways to prevent these reproductive and sexual health problems, but there is concern whether schools are living up to this challenge. Therefore, this study was designed to learn whether adolescents in secondary school in the Ondo State capital of Akure have reproductive health education and are practicing healthy sexual behaviors. The study was based on a sample of six of the twenty-eight secondary schools in Akure that fell under the jurisdiction of the Ondo State Post-Primary Schools' Management Board. Focus was placed on pupils in the final years of both Junior Secondary School (JSS 3) and Senior Secondary School (SSS 3). Overall, 30 percent of the young people reported having sexual intercourse: 21 percent of females and 38 percent of males. Also 39 percent in SSS 3 reported having had sex compared to 21 percent in JSS 3. Forty percent of students in coeducational school compared to 19 percent in boy's school and 8 percent in girl's school had sex. Respondents averaged only 11 points on a 33-point scale of reproductive health knowledge. Students in the senior classes and those in single sex schools scored higher. The mass media was stated to be the major source of reproductive health knowledge; only one-third reported that they had actually talked with someone about their reproductive health concerns. Attitudes toward pre-marital sex were more favorable among male students, pupils in mixed sex schools and those whose parents had lower levels of education. These findings suggest not only that the schools must take a more active role in providing reproductive health education, but that this should be done in the junior secondary years before most pupils become sexually active.

Abstract:
This study aimed at investigating the effect of parenting styles on social adjustment of senior secondary school students in Kebbi State Nigeria. Ex-post facto research design was employed to collect the data. The study was carried out on a sample of 291 senior secondary school students drawn from 1,252 SS II students of six (6) selected senior secondary schools, using stratified random sampling technique. Parenting Style Questionnaire (PSQ) was used to assess three (3) parenting styles, while Modified Social Adjustment Scale (MSAS) was used to assess the social adjustment level of the students. One (1) hypothesis was formulated and tested in the study. The results of data analysis using One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) indicate that parenting styles (Democratic, Autocratic and Permissive) have significant effect on social adjustment of senior secondary school students. It is recommended that since parenting styles effect the social adjustment of students, parents should endeavour to adopt a style such as the democratic one that ensures or guarantees the development of some measure of positive self-concept, self-confidence, and self-esteem in the students.

Abstract:
This study examined organisational culture as a determinant of workers’ job commitment in public secondary schools in Ogun State. The study adopted an ex-post facto design approach. The population consists of all workers (teaching and non-teaching staff) in secondary schools in Ogun State, Nigeria. A multi-stage random sampling technique was adopted where five (5) public secondary schools (comprising of both junior and senior) were randomly selected from each of the local government area s from twenty (20) local government areas in Ogun State, making a total of ten (10) secondary schools were selected for the study. Stratified random sampling technique was used in selecting ten (10) workers (teaching and non-teaching) from each junior and secondary schools respectively, making a total number of twenty (20) workers from each of the selected ten (10) secondary schools. A total number of 200 workers was selected for the study. The instrument used for this study is a questionnaire which is sub-divided into three sections. Section A was used to collect information on personal characteristics of the respondents while Section B contained Workers Organisational Commitment Scale which was designed to measure workers’ job commitment. Section C contained Organisational Climate Index (OCI) and was used to measure organisational culture. Data was analyzed using regression and T-test analysis at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that organisational culture has significant relationship with public secondary school workers’ job commitment and that there was no significant difference in public secondary school workers’ job commitment between senior and junior school employees. It is concluded that organisational culture determines job commitment of public secondary school employees in Ogun State. Based on the findings, it is therefore recommended that motivation strategies should adopted to improve teachers’ salaries and promotions. Teachers should positively change their attitude s to work and view their job as more of a call than a profession.

Abstract:
Discipline is essential in class. Without it the educational process is difficult if not impossible. In this manner students and teachers will not meet curricula goals. There are and there will always be some kind of conflicts between teachers and students, but they should not evolve to become a problem that threatens achieving curricula aims. Teachers (especially elderly teachers) often express pessimism about contemporary students. They say that today's students have less knowledge and that they misbehave more often than previous generations. A research was conducted among students which tried to determine the rate of discipline in schools in Celje to see if these statements are true. Questionnaires were distributed to students of one primary and one high school in Celje, Slovenia. Answers were collected from 234 students. On the one hand, it was found out that senior high school students have the worst level of discipline of all the grades involved in the study. They themselves assess their class atmosphere as less disciplined. They report that teachers use a lot of time to calm the class down. All this is probably a factor in lower average mark that the senior high school students report to have. On the other hand, it was found out that teachers do not react to the disturbance or they are trying to be repressive. These are not the correct ways of dealing with discipline issues. Abstract:

The study investigated influence of some factors on the performance of selected West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) candidates. It also examined the relationship between these factors and candidates’ performance. Factors investigated include socio-economic background of the candidates (SEB), study hours (SH), attitude towards English Language (ATTENG) and attitude towards Mathematics (ATTMAT). Secondary schools in Lagos State were divided into private and public secondary schools. Simple random sampling was used to select five out of the six educational districts in Lagos State. Then one public and one private secondary schools were selected in each of the five educational districts earlier selected in stage one. Thereafter, 30 senior secondary school III students were selected in each of the ten schools (5 public and 5 private schools). A total of 600 candidates (consisting of male and female participants) were expected, however, only 564 participants with complete data were found suitable for the study. An instrument tagged “Candidates Rating Scale (CRS)” was developed and used to measure their SEB, SH, ATTENG and ATTMA which were the independent variables while candidates’ scores at WASSCE was used as the dependent variable. Obtained data were analyzed by using multiple regressions. The results of the study indicate that there exists a positive correlation between WASSCE grades and all the variables in Mathematics but correlate with socio economic background only for English language.

Abstract:
The phenomenon of poor performance in internal and external examinations among Nigerian students, especially, those in the secondary schools, is a matter that has become a source of concern to stakeholders in the education sector in the country. This study therefore investigated the effects of phonics charts on senior secondary school students’ achievement in oral English in Edu, Kwara State. Three objectives and corresponding research questions guided the study. Two hypotheses postulated were tested at 0.05 alpha levels. The quasi-experimental design was adopted using the non-randomised pre/posttest groups design. The population for this study was all senior secondary school students in Edu, Kwara State. The target population for this study was all SSII students in public schools in Lafiagi Emirate,87 students were sampled in their intact classes. The Oral English Achievement Test (OEAT) with a reliability coefficient of 0.69 was used to gather the data for the study. The data collected were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistic methods-mean and standard deviation and the Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA).The findings obtained from this study revealed that the general achievement level of students (both the experimental and control groups) in Oral English was low in the pre-test. However, in the post-test, the general achievement level of the students that were taught with phonics charts in Oral English was relatively high (32.00), while that of students taught with the conventional method was average (24.78). there was a statistically significant effect of phonics charts on senior secondary school students that were taught Oral English with Phonics charts and those taught without it in Edu, Kwara State(F(1,82)=7.039,p<0.05)Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that necessary attention should be accorded use of phonics charts in the secondary schools, especially for teaching Oral English. Teachers, textbook writers and curriculum planners should emphasis the use of phonics charts for teaching and learning of Oral English in Secondary schools in Kwara State.

Abstract:
Administrative effectiveness in secondary schools is germane to making education relevant to the growth of the society. The operational processes and functions in school administration depend on the good management of the documented activities of the school programs, infrastructures, staff and students found in school records for successful executions. Previous studies found that school records were basically created in paper formats which ran into many volumes with the problems of inadequate storage and in-effective preservation methods among others, although the studies did not use the records life cycle in the appraisal of the records management practices. These reported poor records management practices made the retrieval of school records difficult and sometimes impossible resulting in in-effective school administration. This paper examines the influence of records management practices on administrative effectiveness in public secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. Survey research design was adopted for this study and the instrument for data collection was a questionnaire administered on a sample size of360 administrative team members in public senior secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. Data analysis was done using frequency counts and simple percentages to answer the research questions while regression analysis technique was employed to test he hypotheses. Research findings revealed that the schools have all the statutory and non- statutory records for proper and adequate administrative duties, the records management policy manual was available and the records management practices were based on the records life cycle in the public senior secondary schools in Lagos State. Additionally, the study found that the records creation stage was well managed while the maintenance and use stage were fairly managed and the disposition stage was poorly managed. Based on the findings, the study recommends the provision of equipment that would ensure that school records are properly stored, preserved and disposed to achieve best practices in records management for effective school administration.

It also investigated the rate of use of social media for the purpose of education or otherwise among science students in Secondary schools in Nigeria. The study was a quasi-experimental of pre-test, post-test research design. The sample for the study was 80 Senior Secondary School two students, selected from two schools in Ondo state, South West, Nigeria. Purposive sampling technique was adopted in the selection of the schools and classes for the study. The choice of the sampling technique used was to ensure that the schools and classes selected have access to cell phones and internet facilities during school period and that the classes are science based. The instruments used for the study were Social Media Students Participation Rating Scale (SMSPRS), Social Media Students’ Performance Test in Science (SMSPTS), Social Media Students’ Questionnaire (SMSQ). Validity and Reliability of the instruments were ensured and determined. Data collated were analyzed using frequency count, mean, standard deviation and t-test. The outcome of the analysis revealed that 98% of the students’ sampled do not use social media for educative learning purposes but for entertainment and socialization. Students exposed to the use of social media platform with conventional teaching-learning method participated better in lessons and performs better in the subject than their counterparts with no use of social media platform
