Abstract:
Nowadays, the development of the teaching and learning of English as a foreign language has been transformed. Learners do not only focus on the learning of speaking and writing but also reading since they are required to be able to smartly respond to the texts they are reading. The development of the information and technology forces the focus of teaching and learning on the critical reading that might be less interesting for the students. The students may not know their interest in reading before they start reading. A unique condition in Magelang regency, a small town close to Yogyakarta, the students of senior high schools have achieved their best achievement for their learning that can be seen from the rank of the school that becomes the best school in terms of the final examination in Central Java. To know the teaching and learning of English in that school can be an alternative for other schools. Based on the case study conducted in some schools in Magelang regency, it can be found that the teaching and learning are still varied. The findings were discussed under the following terms; students’ reading activities, mastery of reading skills, reading materials, and reading modality. It is a problem for the success of language teaching as the students can have low motivation in reading if the reading materials were not interesting for them.

Abstract:
Building maintenance is a phenomenon that transcends all disciplines over the world and its importance cannot be overemphasized It has become very critical in institution success such that its intervention is indispensable. Public senior high school buildings in Ghana represent significant investment of the tax payers’ money and therefore maintaining these buildings is important. However, there seems to be paucity of studies on the examination of the current state of maintenance of government buildings in senior high schools in general and Wa Municipality in particular. This research seeks to bridge this knowledge gap by examining the current state of maintenance of government buildings in senior high schools in Wa Municipal of the Upper West Region of Ghana. Study methods include the use of questionnaire, interview guides, focus group discussion guide and observation checklist for data analysis. A total of 393 respondents (197 students, 140 teachers and 56 school management) who took part in this study were purposively selected. The study also found out that the current state of all the public senior high school buildings in the Wa Municipality is satisfactory for academic work; albeit poorly maintained with some buildings in a bad state. The study identified that the major defects on some of the school buildings are related to the state of services (students mean = 2.523, teachers mean = 2.321, school management mean = 2.464), fittings and furniture (students mean = 2.457, teachers mean = 2.500, school management mean = 1.982), as well as the finishes and windows (students mean = 2.609, teachers mean = 2.429, school management mean = 1.804). The school buildings which were highly affected were detected to be school dormitories, and teachers’ bungalows; whereas the school administration block and the school laboratory were found to be relatively in good state with reference to the number of defects. The study recommends that there is an urgent need for maintenance works to be carried out on public senior high school buildings in the Wa Municipality and also there should be a conscious effort to include maintenance activities in the budget both at the Assembly level and the school level in the Wa Municipality to ensure regular maintenance of their senior high school buildings. Abstract:
This study explored the variance in ocean literacy accounted for by student and school levels and examined the influence of these two predictors on senior high school students’ ocean literacy using a hierarchical linear model. Data were collected from 1944 students from 99 schools and used to construct the two-level hierarchical linear model. The results indicated that the variance in ocean literacy accounted for by students was larger than that accounted for by schools; approximately a quarter of the total variance in ocean literacy was accounted for by schools. At the student level, attitude toward the ocean and frequency of reading ocean-themed books or magazines were predictors of ocean literacy, whereas at the school level, school region and location were significant influential factors. This study’s results have significance for policy-making regarding ocean literacy improvement.

Abstract:
Choosing a career can be hard when you have no idea what you want to do. However, there seems to be paucity of studies on career choices among senior high schools’ students in Ghana in general and Wa Municipality in particular. This study was intended to find out the career choices of students of Wa Senior High Technical School in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region of Ghana. A descriptive survey design was employed for the study. Data was collected from a sample of 80 students and 20 teachers using questionnaire. All respondents responded to the questionnaire. The data were presented in tables and charts and analysed using frequencies and percentages. The study found out that, the students needed career information, employment information, interpersonal needs, educational needs and self-understanding. The top career guidance needs of students as expressed by teachers and the school counsellor include educational information, study habits, interpersonal information, educational needs and career needs. The study also found that, the factors that influence students’ choice of career are extrinsic and interpersonal factors and they include perception of colleague/peer pressure, teachers’ influence, societal perceptions, availability of further training and occupational security. This helps students learn about and explore careers that ultimately lead to career choice. This played a critical role in shaping students career choice. It was recommended that Career Education and Guidance should be introduced in the primary school to enable children to explore the world of work as young people need to make a smooth transition from primary school to the initial years of Senior High School and the Ministry of Education should allocate fund for a Guidance and Counselling activities in all basic and second cycle schools. This will enable the guidance coordinators to function effectively at their various levels of work. Keywords: Career Choices, Challenges, Senior High Technical School, Students, Wa, Ghana.

Abstract:
Many teachers considered that listening is the most important skill of any other language skills(Aziez & Alwasilah, 1996). Moreover, the discussion of an issue about the use of authentic listening material is just fierce in listening as it is in reading(Harmer, 2001). However, the teacher should have to look for the simplest method of teaching listening to overcome its difficulties; to teach it effectively; and to achieve the goals of teaching listening successfully, such as teaching students to acquire vocabularies, grammatical understanding, and good pronunciation. The Purposes of the study are to overcome the difficulties in teaching listening; to improve teacher’s creativity in teaching listening; and to provide the teacher with some alternative methods of teaching listening.Based on the study it can be concluded that, first, the effective listening will produce successful listening. Second, the reason of using listening in the classroom is to let the students to hear different varieties and accent of English instead of the voices of their teacher which may be full of idiosyncrasies. Third, the listening materials are geared with the students’ needs, levels, and interests. Fourth, there six principles for listening; Encourage students to listen as often and as much as possible, help students prepare to listen, once may not be enough, encourage students to respond to the content of a listening, not just to the language, different listening stages demand different listening tasks, and good teachers exploit listening texts to the full.

Abstract:
Justification is the process of justifying a claim that is supported with evidence. Justification is the center of mathematics. Justification plays an important role in learning because it can help students improve understanding of mathematical concepts. By using a qualitative approach, this study aims to analyze the mathematical justification of high school students in solving problems on statistical topics. This research was conducted on 122 high school students by giving justification test questions on the topic of statistics resulted in 17% (21 students) included in the level justification level 3, 16% (19 students) included in level 2, 47% (47 students) included in level 1, and 20% (25 students) the rest are included in level 0. Further analysis was carried out to see the mathematical justification process by each level. The mathematical justification process consists of three stages, 1) the process of recognition; 2) the development process (building-with), and 3) understanding (awareness) process. Level 3 and level 2 students can recognize the problem and determine the right strategy to solve the problem, level 3 and level 2 students are also able to execute the strategy and interpret the results of the calculations they have done. The difference in level 3 and level 2 students lies in the understanding the concepts they have. Level 1 students can recognize problems and determine solution strategies. Although level 1 students can recognize and do calculations well, level 1 students fail in interpreting the results of calculations performed. While students who are level 0 are not able to recognize the problem, so level 0 students do not carry out the justification process.

Abstract:
In current study, the objective was to identify the relationship between teaching style and level of depression among Kenyan junior and senior high school students. The study was conducted based on Kenyan educational panel survey. The methodology was longitudinal as students were studied in 2013 and repeatedly followed in 2017. The sampling was multistage stratified sampling and panel data analysis was used. The total sample size was 654 out of which 320 were male and 334 were female. The results showed that there were significant differences in terms of four perceived teaching style including authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and indifferent among junior high school x² (3,654=123.81, p<.001), and senior high school, ?² (3,654=62.91, p<.001). The finding suggests that teaching style in senior high schools had different pattern in terms of effects on junior high schools. Those junior students who considered their teacher style as more authoritarian showed higher depression compare to those who considered their teacher as authoritative, permissive, and indifferent. Less depression is also observed among senior high students who perceived there to be permissive compare to other teaching style including authoritative, authoritarian, and indifferent.
