Abstract:
The number of studies investigating computer use or other technologies used by senior citizens has progressively increased in the last twenty years. The interest stems from a diverse range of research disciplines including human computer interaction, education, and many others. However, this group of people is less likely to use technology compared to younger groups. Senior citizens generally have a positive attitude towards technology, and they are willing to use the product if they need it. Positive attitudes are also more likely to be expressed towards devices used every day at home, such as the television, microwave etc. Even if those devices are now typically digital, senior citizens are familiar and comfortable with them. A common reason for not wanting to learn different technologies was the feeling that it may be too difficult for them or not having access to a computer or tablet. These characteristics drive us to offer a solution by rethinking the use of some existing technologies and making them more affordable and accessible to older people. It is offered on a TV, something that senior citizens are familiar and comfortable with and which most of them have it at home. As the first step, we identified different requirements and factors that affect senior citizens' daily lives, the things that they do most during the day. Based on these requirements, we had to find services that will fulfill them. The system is constructed from four major services such as video conferencing, news, books and different recreation videos (e.g.: tips about exercise, hunting, cooking or gardening.) Each one of these sections is identified by a review of previous research using a literature survey. These services were chosen, among others, for their effects on senior citizens' quality of life. Thus, our goal was to provide them with an adequate set of required services. The working environment (Smart TV) is based on the different reasons stated below in the research. Some of them are a) a Smart TV is an integrated system which offers features of both a traditional TV and a personal computer, b) it provides a large screen, is easy to use and always ready, and most importantly, c) the TV, the most-user friendly electronic device, is a basic activity of senior citizens in their daily life. Design perspectives and functional requirements are presented. Finally, we describe some scenarios and assessment methods of the proposed system with the target group (senior citizens). Based on the findings, we can conclude that there was great acceptance from senior citizens for the support of daily living and the ability to control their daily activities provided by this service.

Abstract:
During the past decades there has been an increase in longevity. These aging trends have an enormous economic impact and present challenges to policymakers, families, and health care providers to meet the needs of aging individuals. Aging is accompanied with various physiological changes that can limit the elderly’s functional status and their independency. Some of the most noticeable changes occur within the musculoskeletal system, however cardiorespiratory changes, as well as changes in the body composition limits the elderly’s aerobic capacity and therefore increases the risk for cardiovascular and hypokinetic diseases. Moderate physical activity reduces the risk, or prolong the onset of physiological changes and various diseases. Physical activity can also enhance functional fitness amongst the elderly. Functional fitness is having the physiologic capacity to perform normal everyday activities safely and independently without undue fatigue. The aim of this study was to determine the functional fitness as well as static balance and dynamic balance status of senior citizens. Secondly, to determine the association between: physical activity, aerobic endurance and functional fitness and status amongst senior citizens. Thirdly, to determine the association between physical activity status, aerobic endurance and static– and dynamic balance amongst elderly. A once off subject availability study was performed, and 58 senior citizens (32 females and 26 males) between the ages of 65 years and 96 years participated. The physical activity index was determined with the Sharkey and Gaskill Physical activity index questionnaire. Functional fitness was measured using the Rikli and Jones Fullerton’s functional fitness test protocol. The static balance and dynamic balance was tested with the one leg balance eyes closed and functional reach test respectively. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the status of the participants. Two way summary tables were used to categorize the amount of weak test results. Partial correlations were used to determine the association between physical activity, functional fitness and static and dynamic balance. The male participants’ functional fitness status compared well with USA normal ranges, however the functional fitness test scores of the female participants were even lower than the older age group (75 to 79 years) of the USA normal ranges. The results of the frequency distribution indicated that 80.77% and 68.75% of the male and female participants respectively, tested poorly in more than four of the functional fitness tests. Neither the male nor the female participants’ static balance score were adequate, although it does not indicate a fall risk. Aerobic endurance showed to have medium (r = 0.3–0.49) to high (r 0.5) partial correlation with all functional fitness tests for the total group, as well as in the female participants. In the male participants aerobic endurance only showed high correlation (r 0.5) with lower body strength and dynamic balance and agility. Dynamic balance correlated well (r 0.5) with all functional fitness tests as well as aerobic endurance and physical activity index in the female participants, and only showed a medium correlation with agility in the male participants. This study showed alarming percentages of poor test results for both male and female senior citizens and highlights the need for physical activity interventions in old age homes. The correlations between aerobic endurance, as well as dynamic balance and functional fitness tests indicates that even simple interventions such as walking programs could enhance the functional fitness of senior citizens and thereby increase their independency.

Abstract:
Although the graying of the American society has been well documented, the question as to whether the elderly populace will indeed become a political factor has yet to be determined. Some studies indicate that the elderly will soon develop the consensus needed for political action; other studies counter that the elderly will never be a viable political factor. Among the determinants listed as influencing the political participation equation are standard socioeconomic variables (e.g., race, social status, education, and income). These factors have been studied extensively (Campbell 1960; Key 1950; Milbrath 1965; Nagel 1987; Rose 1965). Trela recently added an item that could possibly influence the political activism of the elderly: membership in age-graded associations. This study addresses the questions raised by Trela (1971), namely, whether age-graded associations influence the political activity of senior citizens, and if so, in what direction elderly participation is swayed. Unlike previous reports, the preliminary data gathered for this study suggest that the age-graded associations of the elderly cannot accurately predict their political activism.

Richardson, Carline P. "An Assessment of Atlanta Area Emergency Operations Plans for Emergency Relief Services Utilized by Senior Citizens." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2008. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/iph_theses/38.

Full text
Abstract:
The emergency response readiness of the public health and emergency management systems have become increasingly important topics for research, development and action in the United States. Senior citizens represent a large and growing population group in the United States. Older persons are likely to be disproportionately vulnerable during disasters because they are more likely to have chronic illnesses, functional limitations, and sensory, physical and cognitive disabilities than those of younger ages. Elderly health and safety have become the responsibility of the elderly themselves, of the community in which they live, and the various agencies and organizations charged with preparedness planning. The goal of this study was to assess the emergency operations plans (EOPs) of emergency relief agencies and organizations in the Atlanta area for the provision of emergency relief services utilized by senior citizens as a special needs population. The research and analysis performed was completed in two steps: a review of collected disaster and emergency operations plans (EOPs) and standard operating procedures (SOPs), and a qualitative analysis of a survey submitted to the agencies. Although many EOPs and SOPs referred to emergency relief services for special needs populations, the plans were not functional and did not fully outline the ‘who, what, when, where and how” to provide disaster relief services. Public health agencies must endeavor to better address the disaster related needs of elderly persons who have physical disabilities, special medical needs and communication disabilities. Disaster preparedness plans must ensure the availability of all items necessary to control and prevent complications related to chronic diseases, prevent acute events and promote functionality and independence.

Abstract:
In light of the European Union`s 2012 theme year: Active aging and solidarity between generations I wished to gain an understanding of weather elderly immigrant are provided with equal possibilities and access to local community information as the majority population and their participation in activities arranged for senior citizens in the municipality where they live. I have done this by meeting with those who work in this capacity. I also chose to meet with representatives for immigrant organizations in the local community to enquire of their work with senior citizens within their own ethnic group. This is a qualitative study on a phenomenological ground based on nine interviews and four observations. I have had two theories to help me analyze my empirical material. Globalization theory is a good groundwork to understanding the changes in modern multicultural societies where I have looked at the work of Anthony Giddens first at hand. The theory of KASAM by Aaron Antonowsky explains how the sense of coherence helps people to remain positive and satisfied in old age despite their failing health and unfavorable circumstances at times. I have found that the municipality where this study is preformed has a multicultural focus in their manor of spreading information. Yet many ethnic groups seek information verbally from friends and family rather than seek it through the official channels which may be more common among the majority population and immigrants that have established themselves in the society. Still all those whom I interviewed agreed that spreading information through direct contact always is the most effective way to get information across to people. I found that the local community meeting places for senior citizens have no immigrants attending on a regular basis. I did meet a group of senior migrant citizens with their origin in various nationalities that gather under the supervision of a cooperation project that has integration and public health as its main goal. All the participants in their activities for senior citizens started coming through personal invitation from the project leader or other group participants. With regards to the theme year those working with senior citizens were aware of it but haven’t had any specific focus on it in their work except for a few that participate in a regional public health project. They all agree that a theme year for active ageing and solidarity is an important milestone to recognizing the needs for recreation and showing respect to those who are beyond the age for retirement.

Abstract:
Many senior citizens are surviving on minimal Social Security benefits and as a result, struggle with food security. Metrocrest Services in Farmers Branch, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, is a non-profit organization that provides several food programs to residents of the community including some programs that are specifically tailored to the needs of senior citizens. This project was to provide Metrocrest with an assessment of the food security of their senior clientele as well as other elderly residents of the Metrocrest service area and to evaluate the current senior focused programs. The project utilized qualitative research including both Metrocrest clients and residents who were not Metrocrest clients bot whose demographics were similar. The objectives were to determine the coping skills used by senior citizens in obtaining food, to assess seniors' awareness of the programs offered by Metrocrest, to discover barriers to accessing needed resources and to make recommendations of how programs could be improved or modified if needed. Through my research, I was able to present Metrocrest with a number of recommendations to improve their existing programs. I was also able to recommend some potential new programs that could be designed in conjunction with local senior centers to better serve the community.

Abstract:
The aim of the diploma thesis is to map and evaluate the availability of social services in the Ústecký Region. Special attention is devoted to Šluknov -- an area, which is known as the northern-Czech end of the world and which is also facing social and ethnic problems. Theoretical part of the thesis introduces social services as a part of a social policy, describes their contemporary significance and concept and further confirms their impact on quality of life. It also presents the typology of social services with focus being placed on two selected users groups -- elderly citizens and ethnic minorities. The theoretical part further addresses the legislative grounding of social services in the Czech Republic and introduces a key process of community planning. The practical part of the thesis, based on publicly available data and interviews, analyzes the availability of each type of social services in the Ústecký Region and more deeply maps available social services in Šluknov area according to users groups which were established in the community plan. With respect to the specifics of the district, the thesis concludes that social services are provided in adequate structure. Nevertheless, most of them are situated in central part of Šluknov area, which leads to poor accessibility to residents in marginal areas of the region.

Abstract:
The aging of the French population is a well- known topic but its effects are more important than is usually thought. The dwelling, the urban living habits, the services and amenities have to be adapted to seniors. The geographer tackles the problem through the relation of elder people to their living territory by using scientific tools provided by environmental psychology, and by referring to medical data. This research work has been made at the professional request of ICADE, one of the leading estate developers in France. The author applies very concrete methods, such as the use of mental maps and GPS trackers, so as to grasp the needs of seniors as accurately as possible. Several experiments have been conducted, at different scales and in different surroundings -Lyon and the Rhône-Alpes region, the Paris region, and also the city of Nice. The third part of the study consists in reflecting on the governance that would be the most efficient to implement the “gerontopôles” (structures associating geriatrics, medical and social care and gerontology)

Abstract:
As a psychologist in an EHPAD (a regulated home for dependent seniors), I became very much aware of the auxiliary nurses’ psychological sufferings. Listening to them during my team-supporting mission, I heard a recurring complaint emerge, that of an egotistical deficit of emotional and affective disinvestment and of a lack of recognition of the painfulness of their task. This has led me to hypothesize professional exhaustion. The research in this thesis therefore focuses on the burn out syndrome. It studies the complex relations between the auxiliary nurses as medico-social staff and the health manager in charge as well as between the elderly person and his/her daughter.A clinical questionnaire highlighted the depth of the subjective feeling of exhaustion while Louise Lemyre’s standardized scale highlighted the depth of the subjective feeling of stress, an operational notion in the theoretical concept of burn out.The analysis of both feelings revealed the complex relations between patient-auxiliary nurse and manager as well as between daughter-mother and grandmother. The narcissism at stake with the staff reactivates the archaic origins if child sexuality in the nursing place. A t the same time, because of the general feminization of the profession, the specificity of the feminine psyche is of foremost importance. Thanks to this notion, the research paper aims to shed a different light on the intermediary position of the manager. The status of good or bad mother figure that auxiliary nurses grant her worsens or lessens the burn out and stress.Last, this research paper further insists on the absolute necessity of permanent institutional training and of psychic elaborative work for the staff at regular intervals

On the willingness factors of senior citizens living in elderly communities Abstract It is a very important issue for aging of population. According to the definition given by World Health Organization (WHO); if the percentage of people who are older than 65 years old is greater than 7% of total population, it is an aging society. Since the aging population issue becomes worse and worse, it is a great challenge for the world to put emphasis on senior care in 21st century. The main goals of the study are focused on the willingness factors of senior citizens living in elderly communities, and to understand how senior citizens live in elderly communities. The subjects of the study are retired Taiwanese who are older than 50 years old. The included subjects are able to execute activities of daily living (ADL) by themselves. There are 1139 subjects in Taiwan included in this study. By descriptive analysis, crosstable analysis, and discriminant analysis, we would like to discuss the willingness of the senior citizens to live in elderly communities and reasons to live in. The results of this study are as following: (1). 25.55% of subjects would like to live in elderly communities; 63.3% of subjects depend on their situation; 11.15% of subjects do not want to live in elderly communities. Most of the subjects think they would depend on their situation. We think that there is potential to have them being willing to live in elderly communities. (2). Based on the discriminant analysis, male, junior high school graduated, Buddhist, and people who believe in I-Kuan Tao in ‘tendency factors’, be able to pay between 10,000 and 15,000 NT dollars per month without any deposit in ‘ability factors’ and dreamed place to stay after retire in ‘demand factors’ affect more on the illingness of our subjects to live in elderly communities . Overall, the correct probabilities of classifications in our study are 64.7%.

Abstract:
This study investigated the relationship between seniors' travel behaviors and living environments and the ways they successfully adapt to the environments, using a sequential mixed method in which qualitative methods follow quantitative analyses. The data were collected from the members of social clubs who regularly visit a community center for the elderly in a mid-size city in Osaka prefecture, Japan. One hundred ninety three seniors participated in the questionnaire survey asking about their daily travel patterns, personal backgrounds, social relations, and environmental information. Twenty-one seniors shared their perceptions of the city and the ways in which they get around through face-to-face interviews, sketch mapping, and one-week travel diary. The findings highlighted cultural and gender influences on seniors' mobility and the proactive nature of their travel behaviors. The participants were relatively healthy and active seniors who travel primarily by bicycle. The statistical analyses indicated that gender did not determine overall or average travel frequency but did identify factors related to high travel frequency. Living near a bus stop and the perception of going out more often than in the past predicted men's high travel frequency (going out every day), while women's high travel frequency was predicted by travel modes (bicycling and walking), sidewalk safety, chores (grocery shopping), and social network (seeing friends and having fewer relatives). Furthermore, the results of qualitative analyses revealed that seniors invented, modified, and applied various adaptive strategies to maintain or enhance their mobility. The positive perceptions of their communities such as favorable memories and beautiful scenery fostered seniors' familiarity and sense of belonging. Seniors used and modified social and environment resources to ensure travel safety. In addition, changes in senior's life stages and travel means manifested gender differences in their adaptive strategies. Men tended to focus on maintaining good health to keep their driver's license, representing their social role as a provider, while women's adaptations related to adjustment to widowhood and travel safety.

As the elderly population rising, long-term care needs among countries is being taken seriously. In the case of rapid population aging, the issue for the elderly has become one of Taiwan's biggest social problems. However, by the changing in socio-economic environment, the care functions of traditional family had been declined and the family must seek external resources to assist, so care needs gradually expanded from personal problems to social problems. This study based on SERVQUAL scale, consider relevant literature to develop the "quality of institutional care satisfaction scale" involving five dimensions for 19 variables. Research objects contain residents (service recipient) and nursing aides (service Provider). Trying to realize the awareness satisfaction of service quality. Taiwan’s National Pension Act started operation in October 2008, signifying the end of the transitional Senior (Citizens) Welfare Living Allowance. However, in the literature regarding Senior Welfare Living Allowance, we have found so many who were benefited by this policy. A heated debate therefore triggered among the welfare advocates, opponents who are against fiscal burden, people with doubts about the national pension system, different political ideologies towards benefits, and other similar social allowances (Senior Farmer Welfare Allowance or Living Allowance for Middle or Low-income Senior Citizens) whose nationwide establishment came much later (not until June, 2002). This study conducts literature review on the legislative process of Senior Welfare Living Allowance, and cited the Spicker’s policy analysis (2006), to delve into the legislative aspect, the relationship between practice and such aspect, and other related issues of Senior Welfare Living Allowance.

The senior citizens welfare living allowance originated from the elder allowances from local governments in 1990’s , and it became the national policy in 2002.Then, in 2008 when National Pension Insurance came into effect, the senior citizens welfare living allowance was integrated into the pension system. This study investigates the effect of the senior citizens welfare living allowance on private transfer and consumption among the elderly living alone with different income groups, and also investigates the difference between the local government and central government execution period. Analyzing the family income and expenditure survey in 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, and 2006, there are four findings in this study. The first, the senior citizens welfare living allowance will reduce the net private transfer among the one-person elderly household with all income groups, and the lower the income is, the more net private transfer decreases. The second, the senior citizens welfare living allowance will only increase the consumption among the middle and high-income one-person elderly household, and the more the income is, the more consumption increases. The third, compared with the local government execution period, the senior citizens welfare living allowance leads to bigger differences in private transfer and consumption among one-person elderly household within different income groups in central government execution period. The last, the senior citizens welfare living allowance cannot enhance the well-being of low-income one-person elderly household.

Since the amendment of Senior Citizen Welfare Law in 1997, small-scale private welfare organizations have been permitted to run without the registration as a foundation. Senior citizens welfare organizations, once dominated by the government, thus regained their market functions, and various kinds of organizations have been instituted ever since. In a review of studies related to senior citizen welfare organizations, it was discovered that differences in the management of senior citizen welfare organizations in Taoyuan County has not been investigated so far. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the current management and development of senior citizen welfare organizations in Taoyuan County and probe into the differences in the management of organizations at different institutional scales. The study further applied the differences to construct management models of senior citizen welfare organizations in Taoyuan County and provide contributive suggestions and feasible opinions to managers of these organizations, so as to enhance the service quality of senior citizen welfare organizations in Taoyuan County. According to legal regulations and current operations of senior citizen welfare organizations, the senior citizen welfare organizations in Taoyuan County were classified into large-scale organizations, medium-scale organizations, and small-scale organizations. Based on the qualitative research method, this study conducted semi-structural in-depth interviews with the managers of 8 organizations and administrators in the County Government. Based on the collected data, the current management of these organizations was analyzed, and related theories were applied to examine the internal and external interactions of these organizations. The research findings showed significant differences in the management of organizations at different institutional scales, and the sense of mission is the major factor for the differences in the management. Whether having sufficient resources or not, managers with a strong sense of mission would succeed in their management. If managers of these welfare organizations had insufficient sense of mission, even provided with sufficient resources, the quality of their organizations is still normal. When their sense of mission is absent, and resources are insufficient, the provided service quality will be the worst. In addition to the sense of mission, resource, professional ability, and innovative capability are secondary factors for the differences in the management. For the construction of management models, it was induced that (1) small-scale organizations are mainly based on ideal, sense of mission, and dependence models; (2) most of the medium-scale organizations are based on the dependence model, and some on the stability model; (3) most of the large-scale organizations are based on the stability model, and some on the ideal model.

This study achieve the following contributions: first, a clear and comprehensive evaluation system for assessing that elder’s transportation demand is recommended. Second, the relative importance or weight for each criterion is investigated, and can be applied to evaluate transportation projects. Third, the opinion distinctions of urban transportation systems between expert and elder are identified. Finally, this study recommends the government to the following two strategies: (1) popularizing transportation safety education and training, and (2)improving the existed transportation facilities. The strategies will satisfy elder’s demand and establish a nice moving environment for elders.

By March, 2018, the data of Taiwan’s household registration revealed that the population of Taiwanese who were 65 or above was around 3.31 million. As predicted, the number of aging people could mount to 20% of entire population, which will result in a “super-aging society” in Taiwan. Recently, besides rooting on the concept of social welfare, attending to physical change, and promoting health, caring mode of the middle-aged and the elderly has placed more foci on the domains featuring mental health and vigorous aging. In specific, how to assist them to engage in life-long learning through senior citizen education is becoming a critical scheme of national developments. Previous literature shows that video-teaching may exert considerable teaching effects and learning outcomes, which has been prevalent in course design. In the past, the middle-aged and the elderly were general preoccupied by their less acceptability to utilizing digital materials in multi-media teaching. This present exploratory study aims to investigate the effects of video teaching on learning results by employing interactive class-preview videos in a “spiritual growth’ course in a university’s Senior Citizen Learning Camp in Kaohsiung City. Pinpointing learning effectiveness and background variables, the pre-test and post-test survey data from “ Learners’ Course Satisfaction Questionnaire” and “The Development of the Well-Being Scale of Elders” were treated and analyzed by statistical procedures such as Descriptive Statistics, Independent-Sample t-test, Paired-Sample t-test, and one-way ANOVA. The research results are 1) All background variable show no significant difference on learning effectiveness, 2) Class-preview videos has positive significant difference on course satisfaction, 3) Class-preview videos demonstrates significant difference on learners’ sense of bliss, 4) the frequency of viewing videos yields significant difference on learning effectiveness. Lastly, several substantial suggestions are proposed for the future studies, which relates to course instructors in senior citizen learning camp and the course planning of using videos appropriately.

Abstract:
The thesis deals with problems connected with the placement of senior citizens into homes for the elderly. The objectives of the thesis are to find out how long the waiting period for the placement into a home for senior citizens is and which obstacles and problems connected with the placement into homes for the elderly appear. The theoretical part of the thesis is focused on some demographic trends, the opinion of the Czech population about the old age and senior citizens, history of social services for senior citizens in the Czech Republic and abroad, and the current offer of social services for senior citizens. In this part, I also describe the process of placing of senior citizens into homes for the elderly and the services which homes for the elderly offer to their clients; I also focus on the senior citizens´ financial reimbursement of board and lodging in homes for the elderly. The research was conducted by means of quantitative and qualitative methods and techniques. In the qualitative research, I deal with the second part of my goal identifying obstacles to placement in homes for the elderly. Firstly, I set the following research questions: 1) What are the obstacles and problems in the process of placing senior citizens into homes for the elderly? and 2) Do senior citizens have any other options of care instead of the care in homes for the elderly? Then, I conducted semi-standardized interviews with 3 social workers, 8 senior citizens and with 3 members of families which put their senior citizens into homes for the elderly. I asked all of them almost identical questions to be able to compare their responses later. The results show that nowadays, dependent senior citizens who have no other option of care are more likely to be placed into homes for the elderly. The answers to the question "What are the obstacles and problems when placing senior citizens into homes for the elderly?" were rather variable and they cannot be generalized. The quantitative part of my research relates to the first part of my goal. Here I primarily focused on the waiting period. The following two hypotheses were set for the research. H1: Senior citizens negatively evaluate the waiting period for their placement into homes for the elderly. H2: Senior citizens know only one possibility of care homes for the elderly. To verify the above hypotheses, I used the method of secondary analysis of the data taken from the client's documentation and the method of controlled conversation. Therefore, I conducted my research in the following homes for the elderly: Home for the elderly Light in Písek, Home for the elderly Bechyně, Home for the elderly Diaconia Centre ČCE Blanka in Písek, Home for the elderly Centre for Social Assistance Vodňany. Social workers in each facility advised me to use the greatest possible number of clients who were oriented and able to answer my questions. In total, I analyzed 100 files of personal documentation and then I conducted the structured interviews with the analysed clients in the homes for the elderly which are mentioned above. The average waiting period was 243 days. In the category of the waiting period shorter than 1 month there were 26 senior citizens; from 1 to 2 months 33 senior citizens; from 3 to 4 months 11 senior citizens; longer than 5 months 30 senior citizens. 79 senior citizens rated their waiting periods positively, but 21 senior citizens rated their waiting periods negatively. 56 senior citizens had some knowledge about other possibilities of care; most of them reported the nursing service (54 responses); homes with nursing (8 responses); personal assistance (3 responses); pensions for senior citizens (1 response).

Abstract:
The diploma thesis Perception of a Retirement Home before and after Client's Admission deals with elderly people's decision to go to a retirement home and their subsequent life in a retirement home. The diploma thesis is divided into two parts theoretical and empirical. The theoretical part focuses on aging and old age, quality of life, autonomy, modern families and elderly care at home as well as in institutions. The chapter Aging, Old Age and the Elderly explains the terms "aging" and "old age". Next, it also describes the changes that occur during old age, how the elderly manage to adapt to these changes and what is their attitude toward old age. From the nursing perspective, the senior citizens can be divided into following categories: able, fragile, dependent, completely dependent and dying. According to this division, the level of care for the elderly can be determined. However, it is vital to maintain acceptable life quality among the elderly as well as respect their real needs. Not only basic physiological needs have to be satisfied, but also higher-level needs cannot be overlooked, such as safety, security, love, acceptance, belonging, respect, recognition and personal fulfillment. One of the next main aspects that also should be taken into account is personal autonomy. Personal autonomy includes independence and freedom. It is self-sufficiency of an individual related to his or her possibilities, abilities and willingness to seize the choices and opportunities that life offers. People have the right to make independent decisions and establish or carry out them in their social environment. In general, people are considered to be autonomous individuals when they manage and organize their own activities without help of anyone else, are able to satisfy their physiological needs, stand up for their opinions and do not enforce approval, closeness and emotional support. They should not excessively fear other people or even feel guilty. If elderly people are no longer self-sufficient due to any reason, it is necessary to provide them with comprehensive care. Elderly people should be entitled to choose their preferred form of care. Elderly care can be provided in clients' private environment, by their family or by field social work. If the elderly do not have a family or it is not possible to take care of them in their home, a housing facility called a retirement home can be used. A retirement home helps its clients with following: accommodation, meals, assistance with daily self-care tasks, personal hygiene or arrangement for personal hygiene, maintaining contacts with social environment, activating tasks and enforcing rights and interests (for instance assistance in dealing with authorities, communicating with various companies, etc.). The aim of the empirical part of the thesis was to determine how the elderly perceive the retirement home before their admission and after adaptation. A secondary aim was to identify the views of family members on changes in the behavior of the elderly after their placement in a retirement home. With regard to the objectives of the thesis, a qualitative research method has been chosen which allows to examine the area in depth. The research was conducted by a survey method (a semi-structured interview). The research was conducted in two retirement homes in South Bohemia. The research group consisted of 10 respondents aged from 60 to 88 years. The target group was selected by quota sampling. The respondents consisted of clients without loss of cognitive abilities placed in a retirement home who could remember their idea about the retirement home before entering it. Another target group were family members of the individual interviewed clients. The diploma thesis states questions related to the research areas.

The rights of the elderly should be on the forefront in discussions of emerging legal rights. While the rights of children have been well documented and discussed, there has been a lack of significant discourse on the elderly segment of the population. Most societies might assume that the rights and concerns of senior citizens are the same as the general population, but seniors have unique needs and concerns associated with their advancing age and associated health issues. In each stage in life, a person has different needs and societies needs to recognize that the elderly have their own unique and special needs. On the other hand, many senior citizens have increasingly felt that their peculiar concerns are being ignored: probate, inheritance taxes, power of attorney (if in poor health), living trusts, how to invest and not outlive their savings, failing or chronic health issues, and lack of enrichment opportunities. There are multiple reasons why elderly people need help from the community. 1. The status of elderly people has diminished as younger people no longer depend on older citizens for information. Due to industrialization, multi-generational households are increasing less common as children move away to get jobs. This decrease in multi-generational homes increases the need for public services for the elderly in order to replace the support that was previously provided by children or relatives. 2. Families are getting smaller; most families have fewer children than previously. It is becoming increasingly more likely for seniors to live alone. Demographics are changing and in most industrialized countries, the birth rate is decreasing. An increasing number of couples do not have kids and are delaying having children to focus on their careers. Also, divorce is causing an increase in single parent families. The average size of households in decreasing and seniors are more likely to be living by themselves. 3. Demographic trends throughout the developed and developing world show that the number of elderly in the world continues to increase. People are living longer than ever before due to improved sanitary conditions and healthcare. Societies will be dealing with effects of an aging population on a scale that they might not have anticipated involving health maintenance, legal issues, financial issues, lack of continuing education, and lack of social activities. As average age increases, society can no longer afford to ignore those problems that are especially characteristic of senior citizens. There should central services to aid and enrich the lives of the elderly in dealing with those problems of aging. Elderly people want the same rights as anyone else - the ability to find work, healthcare, a political voice, and engage in a social life. But as families in developed countries become smaller worldwide, the unique needs of the elderly need to be addressed. One example of how this is being done is by examining the services provided to seniors by a typical city in southern California: Irvine. Senior community services in California are city services that provide innovative community-based service programs to seniors and their caregivers to help them remain independent. Many countries do not provide any senior community services to the elderly. However, it should be considered to be a right of the elderly to have social services. Not only are the elderly living longer, but also they deserve a better lifestyle and dignity. It is important for society to recognize that the demographics trends around the world show that the elderly is the fastest growing segment of the population and therefore, it’s important to keep the elderly as productive and independent as possible. This can be accomplished by the availability of senior community service centers. With active aging being the goal of an aging society, how to maintain a meaningful later life for the elderly becomes a critical issue. An important basis for active aging assessment is community participation, through which the psychological well-being of the elderly can be evaluated and the impact on their mental health and their life assessed. Quantitative method is adopted in this study. On the selection of the population for this study, the target for analysis consists of senior Pingtung County citizens aged 65 or more. Purposive sampling of questionnaire survey is administered for data collection. Based on the model derived from the concept of psychological well-being by Ryff(1989,2014), this study will explore the relationship between Pingtung elderly’s community participation and their psychological well-being. Data from the survey will be tested by multiple regression method. The study selected 24 community caring-concern centers as purposive samples in which 347 questionnaires were returned. This study use a variety of analyses to verify the questionnaire data. When using multiple regression analysis, the model showed that the more elders participated in the community, the higher levels of physical and psychological well-being they have. Moreover, the 4 sub-dimensions of community participation were positively correlated with psychological well-being. The effect levels from high to low of the 4 sub-dimensions are leisure activities, learning activities, community activities and religious activities. The study again confirmed the positive relation between community participation and psychological well-being.
