Full textIn the inverse estuary of the Sine-Saloum (Senegal), the bloody cockle (Senilia senilis) is a key bivalve species for the communities of women who have exploited it for thousands of years. Yet very little information is available about its biology. It is therefore impossible to predict the species'response to variations in its living conditions, particularly in the context of global change. To address this issue, three research questions were posed: (1) What are its physiological tolerance limits to temperature and salinity? (2) What are the seasonal variations in its growth and the phenology of its reproduction in the main artisanal fishing sites in the Sine-Saloum ? (3) How does the seasonality of the salinity gradient at estuary scale influence its trophic ecology and growth? To answer these questions, an integrative approach was implemented, combining laboratory and in situ experiments and seasonal sampling protocols Our results highlight the major effect of salinity gradients, driven by the monsoon, in regulating the life-history traits of S. senilis in the Sine-Saloum. Although the species has been shown to tolerate a wide range of salinity variations, from 12 to 60, and high temperatures (threshold at 39°C), its growth performance and reproductive phenology follow a seasonal pattern and spatial heterogeneity closely linked to salinity variations. Its trophic ecology also appears to be strongly structured by the seasonal monsoon cycle, with food sources varying according to season and distance from the estuary’mouth. These results help to advance our knowledge of the species' ecological niche. As such, they are essential milestones for contributing to the development of modelling approaches, from the individual to the population scale. These are fundamental elements in supporting the sustainability of small-scale fishing

Full textŠio magistro darbo tyrimo objektas - Turgenevo „Eilėraščiai proza“, dar kitaip vadinami „Senilia“, ir A.Šopenhauerio filosofinės įdėjos. Ciklas „Senilia“ – tai ilgų, filosofinių Turgenevo apmąstymų rezultatas apie klausimus, kurie domino jį visu kūrybiniu laikotarpiu:gyvenimo prasmės pieškų problema, mirties paslaptis, tikėjimo esmė, meilės ir gėrio paskirtis, grožio estetika, gamtos ir žmogaus santykis joje. Atlikta išsami analizė patvirtina, kad Turgenevo kūrybinėje sąmonėje filosofinės įdėjos sintezuojasi į ypatingus vaizdus-suvokimus (filosofemas), kuriuose atsispindi rašytojo požiūris į pasaulį ir žmogų (autorinė antologija) .Tyrimo rezultatas-mintis apie žmogiškosios būties antologinių problemų sprendimų skirtumus. Šopenhaueris pristato išbaigtą filosofinę sistemą, kurioje pasaulis pavaizduotas, kaip beprasmės valios išraiška. Esant tokiai aplinkybei a priori žmogus neturi galimybės tapti laimingu, todėl vienintele išeitimi tampa valios atsisakymas, mirtis ir išėjimas į nebūtį. Turgenevas, nežiūrint į nedaugelį optimistinės nuotaikos apraiškų atskirose jo miniatiūrose, iš esmės nemato jokios išeities prieš akistatą su mirtimi, atsižvelgiant į tai, jo pesimizmas atrodo dar gilesnis, nei Šopenhauerio.
The object of researching in this master`s work are prosaic poems written by I.Turgevev - in other way they were called Senilia. The second object of researche are philosophical ideas of A.Schopenhouer. Senilia was written after long philosophical meaning of questions, which troubled Turgenev for the whole creative life: the problem of searching for the purpose of life, the mistery of death, religious truth, the place of goodness and evil in the world, estethic of beauty, relation of human and nature. The researches say that philosophical ideas in creative Turgenev`s thougths are collected to the special conceptions (philosophems), which reflect his notion of the world and a person in it (author`s onthology). As a result we have a meaning about different ways of solving ontological problems of existence. Schopenhouer makes the whole philosophical system, where the world is shown as a quintessense of an irrational will. A man in these conditions cannot be happy, it causes to refuse from will and escape from life. Turgenev, in spite of rare examples of optimistic mood in some miniatures, does not see any way of resisting the death. In this meaning his pessimism is deeper than Schopenhouer`s one.

Full textIn social insects, only one or a few individuals of a colony mate and reproduce. The production of reproductive queens and non-reproductive workers arises from a developmental switch at the larval stage, and is generally regulated by environmental factors. Workers are expected to influence the production of both caste through the control of larval development. Kin selection theory predicts that the current queen, the workers and the larvae have increasing interest in the production of new queens, suggesting potential intracolonial conflicts. These conflicts are likely resolved by signalling the presence of a mated queen. Pheromones are generally involved in conflict resolution, but their chemical nature and effects are largely elusive. The present thesis aims at characterizing the social factors regulating caste differentiation in ant colonies. We investigated behavioural, physiological and pheromonal mechanisms that influence the production of queens. The monogynous ant Aphaenogaster senilis provides a useful model. The queen prevents the production of new queens by mean of pheromonal communication. However, if she disappears, a few replacement queens are reared from the totipotent diploid larvae. Overall, our results confirmed that the workers and the queen constrain colonial reproductive decisions. In chapter two, we showed that the production of queens correlated with the number of workers. Larval fate depended on the realization of food processing tasks by the workers at the group level. The third and fourth chapters confirmed that the mated queen fully inhibit the development of larvae toward queens. She signals her caste and mating status. Chapters three, four and five pointed at cuticular dimethylalkanes, and especially two queen-specific dimethylalkanes, as good candidates for the queen signal. These results contribute to substantial amount of works showing the important role of cuticular hydrocarbons in queen-worker communication. The third chapter asked for the transmission of the queen pheromones. We showed that queen-laid eggs do not transmit queen primer pheromones. Chapter four investigated the role of queen’s behaviour to maintain their reproductive monopoly. We conclude that collective decision-making over the production of sexuals is mainly shaped by the presence and reproductive state of one individual (the queen).

This thesis is based on the theoretical and interdisciplinary issues surrounding eye health in the elderly and the socio-cultural barriers facilitators. The issue focuses on the elderly with visual impairment caused by cataract senile and needs to undergo an outpatient surgical procedure and, for reasons that are investigated here, can not or will delay the procedure. Research of the statements from the elderly, the reasons for the suspension of cataract surgery. The quantitative approach accounts for the collection and presentation of data obtained from documents and databases available, suitable for "translation" numeric (absolute and relative) in the period January to December 2009. The qualitative approach was conducted from interviews with older people who have benefited from cataract surgery. We used a "field journal" to record the situations that involve the suspension of cataract surgeries. We note that the results in the year 2009 had a total of 2,956 surgical schedule. Of these 78% (2306) were performed and 21% (650) were suspended. The clinical causes of hypertension and had the cough causes more prevalent. The rate of recovery varied between 73.2% to 84.7%. Indicators of surgery cancellation between 15.3% to 26.3%. We selected the stories that attracted the most attention by the content set out in its analysis. Seeking a deeper analysis of the data collected, other meanings were revealed regarding the issues considered as problems that caused the suspension of surgery in the lives of individuals and how they were treated in the health services at two levels: municipal and regional health. In assessing what caused the suspension of the surgery and cause the elderly to find that the financial and psychological impacts are most significant to the elderly respondents
