Abstract:

The Semiotics of Time Travel: Studies in Simulation and Causality is a study of the philosophical/literary idea of simulation as defined mainly by Jean Baudrillard. The thesis, however, does not aim to be a commentary on Baudrillard. It uses his ideas as a starting point, and then proposes its own definition of simulation, with emphasis on temporality and causality. Specific cases of simulation are traced in Oedipus Rex, Macbeth, Italo Calvino's short stories, and Paul Auster's The New York Trilogy. In each case, a detailed literary analysis of the work is used to advance the theoretical argument. The approach is best described as interdisciplinary, covering a range of ideas in philosophy, semiotics, and literature. The strong unifying thread in all the chapters is a semiotic analysis of temporal paradoxes, as well as the underlying definition of temporal paradoxes as a subset of simulation, a connection whose various aspects are explored in the different chapters. The thesis also seeks to broaden the definition of simulation, making connections between simulation and other concepts, such as analytical statements (Hans Reichenbach), performative statements (Stanley Cavell), scientific observation (John Searle), narrative structure (Aristotle), and the nature of signs (Umberto Eco). The aim is a philosophical platform for the analysis of simulation as a tool for a semiotic analysis of temporal and causal paradoxes.

Orientador: Sandra Aparecida Ferreira Banca: Márcia Valéria Zamboni Gobbi Banca: Márcio Roberto Pereira Resumo: A dissertação analisará construções imagéticas e estilísticas do escritor português José Saramago nas obras Os Poemas Possíveis (1966), Provavelmente Alegria (1970) e O Ano de 1993(1975), procurando estabelecer as diferenças e semelhanças entre as três obras mencionadas, tendo como foco o percurso figurativo e temático dos poemas, por meio da atenção ao rigor da construção, à tipologia dos versos e seus padrões rítmicos, aos campos semânticos e efeitos estilísticos. A dissertação também procurou estabelecer as relações entre lirismo e descrição; contenção irônica e fixação pelo problema limiar da arte e da poesia apresentadas pelo eu-lírico; uso de recursos retórico-poéticos; relação com arquétipos e mitos da memória coletiva; recortes epigramáticos; atributos simbólicos de conceitos chave (por exemplo: mar, terra, pedra, silêncio, palavra); construção da paisagem e seus componentes recorrentes (luz, sombra, água, terra, árvores, corpo), com vistas a compor o rol de motivos característicos à obra em análise. The present dissertation sought to draw a parallel between lirism and description, ironic contention, fixation by the problem of threshold of art and poetry suggested by self-lyric; use of rhetorical-poetic resources; relationships with archetypes and myths of collective memory, epigrams; symbolic attributes to key concepts (sea, earth, rock, silence, word) the construction of landscape and its components (light, shadow, water, earth, trees, body), with the objective of showing the range of motives typical of the works mentioned. Abstract:

In this study, a semiotic point of view of selected literature written by ‘coloured’ writers is examined, using some of the semiotic theories of Jurij M. Lotman, one of the leading Soviet semioticians of the school of Tartu. Selected theories of Lotman are applied to ‘coloured’ literature. These include an examination of poetic language (based on Lotman’s theory of a primary and secondary modelling system), the iconicity of the text, the aesthetics of identity and opposition, the distinction between text and extra-text, and the relationship that exists between the extra-text, culture and code. The literary texts chosen for analysis are works by three contemporary ‘coloured’ writers, namely Adam Small, Peter Snyders and Robert Pearce, who have all contributed poetry, prose and drama to Afrikaans literature in general, and original Afrikaans literature in particular. The selected dramas are Joanie Galant-hulle (Small 1978), Political Joke (Snyders 1983) and Die Laaste Supper in Marabastad (Pearce 1988b)*. These writers’ works span approximately three consecutive decades and their work can be examined for commonality and differences. The three chosen dramas were written five years apart respectively; yet they reveal thematic similarities. The dramas also feature a common ‘deviant’ language code used by ‘coloured’ people and discussed in this study as original Afrikaans. This code, which is juxtaposed with standard Afrikaans, is one of the basic areas of interest that motivated the choice of subject for this study. The primary objective of this study is to examine the differentiation that Lotman makes between the various sign systems that operate in natural language (the primary modelling system) and poetic language (a secondary modelling system), and to determine whether these sign systems can be detected and are functional in ‘coloured’ literature. In addition, an investigation is made of the iconicity that operates in poetic language (which, according to Lotman, is the basis for differentiation), and to ascertain whether iconicity occurs in these examples of ‘coloured’ literature and to what extent it influences meaning. In the process, intratextual relations within the poetic text were scrutinised to establish whether the manipulation of language, devices and codes raises any particular expectation in the poetic text, and also to detect whether oppositionally constituted code-systems which set up their own patterns of expectation within the syntactic and lexical levels of the poetic text clash with and contradict prior expectations. In addition, an analysis has been made to determine whether a new understanding of the texts can be reached, based on Lotman’s aesthetics of identity and opposition, and to what extent the reader is forced to collaborate in the modelling process of the texts when the reader’s expectations are undermined by an aesthetics of opposition. The study has successfully corroborated and substantiated all the selected aspects of Lotman’s theory. The differentiation that Lotman makes between the primary and secondary language model is demonstrated especially by the iconicity that operates in poetic language. Examples are abundant in the selected literature and are conspicuous, especially through the manipulation of the language, devices and codes employed by the authors to defamiliarise objects so that they transcend their familiar characteristics and perceptions, and sometimes signify a totally new concept. In this way, readers’ expectations are subverted and they are invited to collaborate in the modelling process of the texts. These techniques are also an integral part of both the text and the extra-text, and their presence justifies Lotman’s claims that the meaning of a literary text cannot be understood outside its cultural or historical context. In retrospect, it can be argued that this research has opened up some additional avenues for an analysis of meaning in ‘coloured’ literature. Neste trabalho, apresentamos os resultados de uma pesquisa que aproxima a teoria semiótica e a literatura. Tal estudo consistiu na análise de um texto literário: o conto Menina a caminho, de autoria do escritor brasileiro contemporâneo Raduan Nassar. Para compreendermos o processo de construção de sentidos engendrado no referido texto, ancoramo-nos na teoria semiótica de linha francesa, ou greimasiana. Por meio do instrumental oferecido por essa teoria, pudemos compreender os mecanismos e efeitos de sentido articulados pelo enunciador do conto que, dentre outros fatores, são os responsáveis pela elevada qualidade estético-literária de seu texto. In this dissertation, we present the results of a research that approaches the semiotic theory and literature. The study chooses as its subject the short-story Menina a caminho, from the Brazilian contemporary author Raduan Nassar. In order to make explicit the building of the text meaning, we have as approach the French semiotic theory. Through the tools offered by this theory, we can understand the means and meaning effects produced by the short-story enunciator that are responsible for the high aesthetic and literary quality of his text.

Abstract:

O objetivo deste estudo é a identificação dos mecanismos responsáveis pela construção da imagem da dúvida na subjetividade da prosa breve machadiana, por meio da análise de alguns contos do escritor. Busca o efeito de sentido dúvida em suas prováveis recorrências para mapear aquilo que, hipoteticamente, chamamos gramática da possibilidade em Machado de Assis. A pesquisa obedece a um percurso que envolve duas frentes: uma teórica e outra prática. A primeira está centrada na determinação de traços semióticos específicos de alguns tipos de discurso. Isso vai caracterizar a estética realista-naturalista, a do romantismo e a estética machadiana. Tal gesto se justifica na medida em que a dúvida machadiana, foco de nossa pesquisa, realiza-se precisamente no diálogo que Machado de Assis estabelece com essas estéticas, e também com o senso comum de seu tempo: a dúvida é construída, em seu texto, pelo abalo das verdades que alicerçam tais discursos. O exame desse diálogo é feito, nesta pesquisa, à luz dessa tipologia, dada, semioticamente, pelo tipo de contrato veridictório sustentado por essas estéticas: o objetivante (para o realismo-naturalismo); o subjetivante (para o romantismo) e o semiótico (para a estética de Machado). Por meio dessa tipologia identificamos, no e pelo discurso de Machado, possíveis refração e reflexão dos valores investidos em cada um dos contratos, por intermédio do estudo das escolhas sintático-semânticas de construção feitas pelo escritor. A segunda frente de desenvolvimento é o da abordagem dos contos, feita segundo a leitura semiótica de análise de linha francesa, noções de análise do discurso e conceitos desenvolvidos pelo lingüista e filósofo Bakhtin. Na interseção desses dois percursos, mostramos de que maneira um traço específico desse tipo de contrato semiótico a dúvida se realiza no especial projeto do dizer de Machado The main objective of this study is to identify the mechanisms which are responsible for the image of doubt´s construction within the subjectivity in Machado de Assis\'s short prose through the analysis of a few of his short stories. It will find the doubt as a sense effect in its probable recurrences, while attempting to map out what has been hypothetically called \"the grammar of possibility\" in the works of Machado de Assis. This research follows a path with two approaches: a theoretical one and a practical one. The first one is focused in identifying the specific semiotic aspects in a few types of discourses, to characterize the aesthetics of Realistic-Naturalistic, the Romanticism period and the Machado\'s own. This is justified once the Machadian doubt the main focus of this research will become apparent in the Machado´s dialog established among him and these aesthetics, as well as his era´s common sense: that the doubt is made by a shake-up of on the truths supporting such discourses. In this research, an examination of this dialogue is conducted on the guidance of this typology, once it is semiotically, by the kind of veridictory contract supported by these aesthetics: the objectifying one (Realism-Naturalism); the subjectifying one (Romanticism) and the semiotics one (Machado´s own). This typology will help to identify not only in, but by Machado´s discourse as well; the possiblity of refractions and or reflections of the invested values on each one of these contracts through the study of the sintax-semantic choices in the construction and made by the author himself. The second part of this study is the approach to the short stories according to a reading based on the French-oriented semiotics, discourse analysis notions and the linguist and philosopher Bakhtin´s concepts. In the intersection of these two approaches, the very way a specific characteristic of this kind of \"semiotics\" contract the doubt is achieved in the special project of Machado\'s oeuvre is shown.

Abstract:

This study is a descriptive research project which examines a purposeful census of the best selling children's books for 0-8 year olds in the United States in 2003. This cross-sectional study of these social artifacts evaluates the extent to which the ideologies of the environmental movement have been inculcated into culture. It evaluates how the environment is represented in childrenâ€™s literature and the extent to which children's literature meets the goals of environmental education. Through narrative semeiotic analysis of the themes, as well as the manifest (text) and latent (pictures) content, varying degrees of pro and antienvironmental ideologies reflected by these representations emerged. Analytic induction revealed that these representations reflected ideologies of human domination over nature. In addition, in most cases, the representation of the environment did not reflect or meet the goals of environmental education. This finding sheds light on the role children's books play in the environmental socialization of America's youth.

Abstract:

A teoria semiótica de linha francesa, em seu início, tinha como preocupação maior as questões do inteligível, quando Greimas propôs um percurso gerativo do sentido capaz de dar conta dos diversos sistemas de significação. Entretanto, com o passar do tempo, as questões da ordem do sensível e do afeto se colocaram como um desafio para os analistas e pediram espaço na teoria trazendo textos em que a narrativa não era central. Claude Zilberberg, em especial, é um dos autores que caminha na direção de propor a primazia do sensível em relação ao inteligível com os recursos do que veio a se chamar semiótica tensiva. Acompanhando o movimento feito tanto pela teoria quanto pela literatura, nossa dissertação tem como objeto um romance experimental, Catatau, de Paulo Leminski, que se apresenta como uma obra de difícil acesso devido à sua pouca linearidade narrativa. Nosso intuito é abordar a obra pelo viés da teoria tensiva tentando apontar caminhos possíveis de leitura a partir de estratégias e procedimentos recorrentes no texto. Assim como Zilberberg encontra no modelo saussuriano da silabação um sistema rítmico passível de ser expandido a todos os domínios semióticos, podemos encontrar em um romance como o Catatau células ou elementos que se repetem em determinados intervalos criando uma lei, uma orientação, enfim, um ritmo. É curioso notar, no entanto, que no caso da obra analisada, tal ritmo se mostra mais como um desorganizador da linguagem que como um organizador. Queremos com isso dizer que é a alternância da célula rítmica que provoca no leitor o efeito ininteligibilidade. Evidentemente que há diversos outros recursos, principalmente de nível discursivo, que também reforçam esse efeito, como mostramos ao longo do trabalho. Enxergamos então o romance de Leminski menos como uma narrativa diluída que como o produto de uma vivência, sendo que tal vivência só é possível por meio de um sujeito sensível, afetado pelo que está à sua volta. É nessa linha de abordagem que encontramos os meios para explicitar a construção do sentido do texto, objetivo por excelência da teoria semiótica In its beginnings, the French semiotic theory had as its major concern the issues of the intelligible, when Greimas proposed a generative path of meaning capable to comprise many systems of meaning. In the course of time, though, the analysts were defied by issues related to sensibility and affection, which claimed for a place in theory, through texts in which narrative was not central. Claude Zilberberg, in particular, is one of the authors who defends the primacy of the sensibility over intelligibility through the features of which came to be called tensive semiotics. Following this movement both through theory and literature, this dissertation chooses as its subject an experimental novel, Paulo Leminskis Catatau, almost considered an unintelligible work due to its non-linear narrative patterns. We aim to approach this novel through the tensive semiotics theory, proposing some ways for its reading based on the texts iterant strategies and procedures. As Zilberberg finds in Saussures syllabic model a rhythmic system which can be expanded to all semiotic domains, we can find in a novel like Catatau cells or elements which repeat in certain intervals, creating a rule, an orientation, a rhythm at least. In Catatau, this rhythm seems much more to disorganize than to organize the language. It means that its the rhythmic cell interchange that leads the reader to that effect of unintelligibility. Of course that there are more features that reinforce this effect within the novel, as we show along our work. That means that we see Leminskis novel less as a diluted narrative and more as the offspring of some experience only made possible if built upon some persons sensibility, affected by his/her surroundings. On this specific approach we find our means to make explicit the building of the text meaning, which is considered the semiotic theory main goal.

Abstract:

Sobretudo a partir do início da década de 1980, José Saramago notabilizou-se como um dos escritores de língua portuguesa a conquistar considerável apreço da crítica literária sem, em contrapartida, cobrar um texto que se possa considerar dos mais herméticos na literatura contemporânea, o que decerto contribuiu para a formação de um público leitor significativo. Entendendo que o narrador de seus romances, gênero em que o autor mais escreveu, responde bastante por essa combinação relativamente exitosa de público e crítica, esta dissertação volta-se diretamente para esta instância enunciativa. Investigamos o narrador saramaguiano, então, a partir do reconhecimento de dois vetores que consideramos distintivos desta instância enunciativa e que nomeamos como expansão digressiva e concentração moralizante. Apresentando e detalhando de que consiste cada um desses vetores, defendemos o reconhecimento possível de uma oscilação regulada entre ambos os movimentos. Expomos também as categorias narrativas e tensivas que nos parecem sustentar a expansão digressiva e a concentração moralizante. Paralelamente, desenvolvemos uma análise de parte da fortuna crítica saramaguiana, com a qual fizemos nossas análises se confrontarem - em especial quando essa crítica problematiza o quantum de moderno e de tradicional haveria nos romances do tal português. Defendemos, por fim, que as opções discursivas na instância enunciativa nos permitem aproximar a função desempenhada pelo actante narrador do éthos de um orador, tal como concebido pela retórica clássica. Verificamos, ainda, como os vetores expostos ao longo do trabalho dialogam com a categoria semiótica do estilo. Baseamo-nos em dois romances de José Saramago - Memorial do convento (1982) e A caverna (2000) - e utilizamos como referencial teórico a semiótica de linha francesa, nascida com Saussure, desenvolvida por Hjelmslev e aprimorada por Greimas e, mais recentemente, por Zilberberg. Mainly after the 80\'s decade, José Saramago has become one of the acclaimed writers in the Portuguese language literature to conquer considerable appreciation of the literature critique. Nevertheless, he presents a text that is not to be considered one of the most hermetic in the contemporaneous literature which surely contributes to gathering a significant public of readers. Understanding that the narrator of his novels, genre that he has produced the most, responds to this successful blend of public and critique, this research focuses directly to this enunciation instance. Therefore, we investigate the saramaguian narrator from the recognition of two vectors that are considered distinctive form this enunciation instance which were defined as digressive expansion and moralizing concentration. Presenting and detailing the constitution of those two vectors, we defend the possible recognition of a regulated oscillation between both movements. We also expose the narrative and tensive categories which seem to support the digressive expansion and moralizing concentration. Aside from that, we developed an analysis of part of the saramaguian critique fortune, confronting it to our analysis especially when this critique problematizes the extent of modern and traditional quantum in the Portuguese writer`s novels. At last, we defend that the discourse options in the enunciation instance allow us to approximate the developed function by the acting narrator of the ethos of an orator as conceived by the classical rethoric. We verified how the vectors exposed throughout the work dialog with the semiotic category of style. We based our analysis in the novels Memorial do convento (1982) e A caverna (2000) by José Saramago and we used as theoretical reference the French semiotics, born with Saussure, developed by Hjelmslev, imporved by Greimas and, more recently, by Zilberberg.

Esta dissertação consiste em um estudo sobre os efeitos de sentido causados pelas obras literárias sob a ótica da semiótica greimasiana. O corpus analisado mais detidamente é a obra Anatomia de um romance, de Javier Cercas; também são analisados para comparação parte das obras 23-F: El golpe del Cesid, de Jesús Palacios, e Os três mosqueteiros, de Alexandre Dumas. Começando por uma reflexão sobre o objeto literário a partir do ponto de vista de uma metalinguagem não-científica, criou-se uma ponte entre a metalinguagem nãocientífica e a metalinguagem científica da semiótica greimasiana, tendo como base os conceitos desenvolvidos nos dois dicionários de semiótica. Os conceitos foram complementados pelo desenvolvimento de uma linha recente da semiótica, os níveis de pertinência. O corpus foi analisado conforme os níveis de pertinência, principalmente os níveis do texto enunciado, objeto, prática e estratégia. O efeito de sentido literário será considerado como dependente de diferentes níveis de pertinência e de forma gradual, podendo uma obra se estabelecer como mais ou menos literária dentro de um continuum. This dissertation is a study on the effects of meaning caused by literary works from the perspective of greimasian semiotics. The corpus analyzed more closely Anatomia de um instante by Javier Cercas; They are also analyzed for comparison of the works 23-F: El golpe del CESID, Jesús Palacios, and The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas. Starting with a reflection on the literary object from the point of view of an unscientific meta-language, it created a bridge between the non-scientific metalanguage and the scientific metalanguage of greimasian semiotics, based on the concepts developed in the two dictionaries semiotics. The concepts were complemented by the development of a new line of semiotics, the relevance levels. The corpus was analyzed according to the relevance levels, especially text, object, practice and strategy. The literary meaning effect will be considered as dependent on different levels of relevance and gradually, can a work be established as more or less literary within a continuum.

Music Performance D.M.A. Though many philosophers and music theorists have admitted the signification of the sublime in music as a possibility, the nature and mechanism of that signification has not yet been treated at length with a methodology familiar to musicians or native to music theory. Within this dissertation I have conducted a survey of the philosophy of the sublime as understood by Edmund Burke (1729 – 1797), Immanuel Kant (1724 – 1804), Friedrich Schiller (1759 – 1805), and Arthur Schopenhauer (1788 – 1860), with references to other contemporary philosophers and writers. The broader influence of the sublime in regards to German-speaking regions and certain musical composers was also considered. I then gathered from the above philosophers’ categories and definitions of the sublime a constellation of objects, qualities, and emotional states associated with the sublime. These functioned as signs or signifiers of the sublime, whose paths of signification were considered or determined with use of semiotics and topic theory, with reference to the work of Danuta Mirka, Raymond Monelle, and Leonard Ratner. Making reference to score examples listed in the list of figures, I implemented these techniques in analyses of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Sonata No. 30 in E Major, Op. 109 and Sonata No. 32 in C, Op. 111 as well as Franz Liszt’s “Mazeppa,” from the Études d’exécution transcendante, “Funerailles” from Harmonies Poétiques et Religieuses III, S. 173, and “Marche funèbre, En mémoire de Maximilian I, Empereur du Mexique” in from Années de pèlerinage III, S.163. O trabalho que propomos é norteado por alguns objetivos: o primeiro, mais geral, é reunir em um único trabalho várias questões importantes a respeito da semiótica poética dispersas ao longo da literatura sobre o tema; o segundo, mais específico, é analisar alguns poemas de Paulo Henriques Britto, poeta brasileiro contemporâneo, sob a perspectiva da semiótica francesa, aumentando o quadro de estudos sobre a poesia brasileira contemporânea, preenchendo a lacuna que há no que diz respeito a análises aprofundadas acerca dos poemas de um importante poeta da atualidade. Apesar do crescimento considerável dos estudos semióticos, ainda são relativamente poucas as análises de textos literários que se valem desse instrumental teórico tão proveitoso. Assim, nossa pesquisa se justifica também ao contribuir para a expansão dos estudos semióticos de poesia. Nossa investigação é tributária de trabalhos de alguns linguistas, tais como Ferdinand de Saussure, em seu estudo sobre os anagramas (STAROBINSKI, 1978), e Roman Jakobson (1962, 1990, 2004, s.d.), com seus estudos sobre análises estruturais e gramaticais de poesia. Ademais, percorremos alguns estudos de semioticistas, principalmente aqueles presentes em Ensaios de Semiótica Poética, coletânea organizada por Greimas (1975). Importante foi, ainda, a leitura de textos do campo da semiótica tensiva. Em todas as análises realizadas, foi dada bastante atenção ao plano da expressão, procurando mostrar como se dá a sua construção e, sempre que possível, qual é sua relação com o plano do conteúdo. O corpus selecionado para nossa pesquisa é composto por cinco poemas de Paulo Henriques Britto. São eles: I, da série Bonbonnière, V, da série Bonbonnière, O prestidigitador, da série Três peças circenses (Trovar Claro, 1997), Véspera (Macau, 2003) e Para um monumento ao antidepressivo (Tarde, 2007). The work that we propose is guided by two goals: the first one is to gather several matters regarding poetic semiotics, scattered throughout the literature on the subject; the second one is to analyze some poems by Paulo Henriques Britto, contemporary Brazilian poet, from the French semiotics point of view, increasing the number of studies on the contemporary Brazilian poetry, filling the existent gap concerning detailed analysis of the work of an important poet of our times. Despite the substantial growth of semiotic studies, the ones using such theoretical perspective are not many. Thus, our research is also justified because it contributes to the expansion of semiotic analysis of poetry. We rely on the work of some linguists such as Ferdinand de Saussure, in his study on the anagrams (STAROBINSKI, 1978), and Roman Jakobson (1962, 1990, 2004), with his studies on structural and grammatical analysis of poetry. Furthermore, we have studied texts written by semioticians, especially those found in Ensaios de Semiótica Poética, collection organized by Greimas (1975). The reading of texts from the field of the so-called tensive semiotics was also very important. In all cases, we tried to demonstrate how the expression plan was built and, whenever possible, which was its interconnection with the content plan. Em nossos dias, considera-se a articulação entre expressão e conteúdo no poema um dos traços mais importantes da criação poética. Desde a eclosão dos movimentos estéticos de vanguarda do século XX, que procuraram romper com os discursos tradicionais e as formas canônicas do verso, a tensão palavra/som/imagem tem sido um vetor construtivo por excelência da criação poética, sendo a poesia visual uma das formas de arte que mais difusão apresentou nas últimas décadas. A presente pesquisa procura demonstrar que, mais que um traço característico da criação poética moderna, a tensão entre expressão e conteúdo e o recurso à visualização constituem procedimentos estéticos presentes em diversas tradições literárias da Antiguidade, tanto no Ocidente quanto no Oriente. Assim, este trabalho busca recuperar esses textos originais a partir do estudo de um conjunto de aproximadamente trinta poemas, pertencentes às tradições literárias sânscrita (o citrakvya), grega (o technopaignion) e latina (o carmen figuratum). O estudo consistiu em, de um lado, traduzir os poemas para a língua portuguesa, acompanhados de comentários críticos, a fim de compor uma antologia de poesia visual. E, de outro, analisar, com base na linguística estrutural e na teoria semiótica francesa, os mecanismos próprios de configuração de sentido dos poemas, a partir de questões clássicas acerca desse tipo de prática poética como as oposições entre arbitrariedade vs. motivação; oralidade vs. escrita; e temporalidade vs. espacialidade. Finalmente, aplicando as bases teóricas discutidas ao corpus estudado, procuramos estabelecer uma tipologia segundo a qual os poemas possam ser classificados. At the present time, one of the most important traits of a poetic creation is the relationship between expression and content in the poem. Starting from the outbreak of the avant-garde aesthetic movements of the 20th century, which sought to break with the traditional discourses and with the canonical forms of verse, the word/sound/image tension has been a constructive vector par excellence of the poetic creation, and visual poetry has been one of the most widespread forms of art in recent decades. This research aims to show that, rather than being a trait of the modern poetic creation, the tension between content and expression and the use of visualization is part of the aesthetic procedures also present in the literary traditions of antiquity, both in the West and the East. This work seeks to recover these original texts from the study of a group of about thirty poems, belonging to the Sanskrit (citrakvya), Greek (technopaignion) and Latin (carmen figuratum) literary traditions. On the one hand, the goal of the study is the translation of the poems into Portuguese, accompanied by critical comments in order to compose an anthology of visual poetry, and on the other hand, based on structural linguistics and French semiotics to analyze the proper configuration of meaning mechanisms of poems from the classic questions about this type of poetic practice as the oppositions between arbitrary vs. motivation; orality vs. writing, and temporality vs. spatiality. Finally, applying the discussed theoretical basis to the studied corpus, we sought to establish a typology to which these poems could be classified.

Este trabalho é uma análise da novela A Metamorfose, do escritor tcheco Franz Kafka, sob a perspectiva da teoria semiótica francesa, tal qual construída desde os estudos de Algirdas J. Greimas até estudos recentes, mais conhecidos como semiótica tensiva. A análise se dedica sobretudo a elementos decorrentes da metamorfose de Gregor, em especial às transformações que estão em torno do drama familiar vivido pelos Samsa, resultantes da metamorfose do personagem Gregor em um inseto, pois que parece residir aí toda a problemática da novela. É a partir dessa perspectiva que foi dada atenção a relações contratuais, a transformações actanciais e modais, a elementos tensivos que subjazem à noção de \"metamorfose\" e que interferem na relação entre os actantes, condicionando os diferentes modos de presença de Gregor no espaço, bem como a outros elementos secundários, porém imprescindíveis para a boa condução da análise. Desse modo, esperamos acrescentar uma contribuição tanto para os estudos semióticos, na medida em que a análise repousa sobre uma obra bem diversa da origem proppiana da semiótica de Greimas, como para os estudos sobre a obra de Kafka (mais especificamente, A Metamorfose), que, ao que parece, ainda não foi objeto de uma análise estritamente semiótica. This master dissertation is an analysis of Franz Kafka short story \"The Metamorphosis\", based on the scope of French semiotics, as it was built since Algirdas J. Greimas studies until the recent ones, most called as tensive semiotics. The analyses focuses especially some elements proceeded from Gregory\'s metamorphosis, basically transformations involving Samsa\'s familiar drama because of Gregory\'s transformations to an insect. This seems to be real matter involving Kafka\'s short story. In according to our standpoint, this work concentrates in: contractual transformations, actantial relations and modal arrangements, tensive elements that concern the metamorphosis concept, the actantial bonds that determine some ways of Gregory\'s condition in the family, and finally, others secondary but indispensable elements for the analysis. Thus, we expect to contribute to semiotics studies, insofar as Kafka\'s work \"The Metamorphosis\" is quite different from the most ones that have their origin in the Proppean branch of Greimas semiotics. Furthermore, we expect to contribute also to Kafka\'s studies that, as far as we know, do not have yet a semiotic approach.

The thesis Dom Casmurro: the staging of a trial results from a research on the adaptation of the novel Dom Casmurro, by Machado de Assis, in the Paulo César s Capitu and Moacyr Góes Dom movies. Charles Sanders Peirce s semiotic theory, mainly on the view of Lúcia Santaella, grounded the critical analysis. The study assumes the idea that behind Dom Casmurro-memories, underlies a Dom Casmurro-acting. Helen Caldwell points out a Shakespeare-follower Machado de Assis. Furthermore, critics like Barreto Filho, Magalhães Jr., Raimundo Faoro and Massaud Moisés show the route of the Machadian writing. The novelist had also been a drama and literary critic, an essayist, a poet, and author of comedies, the reason why his narrative sign has been influenced by the dramatic one. In each chapter, a possible scene; sentences as rubrics, causing the text to be a whole index. A more attentive reader will feel like watching while reading a novel turning into a performance. From the view of Luiz Fernando Ramos, on the didaskalias, and the floating spaces, by Fiona Hugues, the Machadian rubrics have been studied as an articulated system in three semantic cores: the rebuilt house, as a setting; the visual poetical plan, as the perspective of the narrative; and the metalanguage, revealing both the book as a parody of Otelo and the narrator s intent to turn it into an spectacle. Having such cores as referentials, the adaptations for movies have been taken as the dynamic interpretant of the novel, that is, as effectively generated effects. According to Thäís Diniz, the analysis characterizes the movies as transcreations. The adaptations are not mimetic as a whole due to the cultural context which constitutes the reception process of the work. A partir da visão de Luiz Fernando Ramos sobre as didascálias, e dos espaços flutuantes de Fiona Hugues, as rubricas machadianas são estudadas como um sistema articulado em três núcleos semânticos: a casa reconstruída, como cenário; poética do olhar, como ponto de vista da narração; e a metalinguagem, revelando o livro como paródia de Otelo e a intenção do narrador em torná-lo espetáculo. Tendo como referência tais núcleos, as adaptações fílmicas são tomadas como interpretantes dinâmicos do romance, isto é, como efeitos efetivamente produzidos. Sob a óptica de Thaïs Diniz, o que a análise constata é que os filmes se caracterizam como transcriações. Essas adaptações não são necessariamente miméticas porque têm como horizonte o contexto cultural que constitui o processo de recepção da obra.

This thesis revolves around an obvious fact: printed (or otherwise two- or three-dimensional) poetry is always and inevitably visual. By analysing a representative selection of poems, including conspicuously experimental and image-like poems as well as examples of more conventional poetry, the thesis points out that visual iconicity is an equally inevitable consequence of the visuality of printed poetry. The analysis applies terminology relating to iconicity and intermediality (presented by Lars Elleström, whose theoretical basis is the semiotics of Charles Sanders Peirce) to the selected poems, while avoiding making too specific interpretations, in order to maintain a discussion of the ever-present phenomenon of visual iconicity as such, and not just the individual examples. Rather than introducing visual iconicity specifically to confirm more or less specific interpretations of poetic texts, this method of approaching poems as two-dimensional works of art is what this paper mainly aims to propose, as a productive starting point for literary analyses in general; as is concluded in the theoretical framework by Elleström, the actual modal and iconic properties of printed poetry contradict mutually exclusive dichotomies such as verbal/visual and text/image. While indirectly visually iconic poems tend to have a wider range of possible interpretations at the outset, the existence of iconic potential, however, does not depend on any specific interpretation.

Recentemente, a semiótica greimasiana vem assistindo ao desenvolvimento de uma nova posição quanto à abordagem do universo de sentido. A chamada semiótica tensiva, desenvolvida principalmente por Claude Zilberberg, traz à baila a discussão de alguns problemas não explorados ou não esclarecidos pelo modelo de Greimas como, por exemplo, a possibilidade da análise dos conteúdos sensíveis ao lado dos conteúdos inteligíveis esses já contemplados pelo percurso gerativo do sentido canônico; ou ainda o movimento de transvalorização de um nível a outro. Em meio a tamanha renovação do modelo greimasiano, Zilberberg publica, em 1986, o texto Pour introduire le faire missif, contido na revista de estudos semióticos RSSI. Logo de início, Zilberberg nos apresenta o conceito de missividade como uma tentativa de dar à sintaxe seu espaço merecido na teoria semiótica, de modo que aquela não mais fosse vista apenas como mobilizadora da semântica e sim como possuidora de uma atividade que lhe é própria. A missividade é então dividida em dois fazeres básicos: um remissivo, o qual promoveria a parada, e um emissivo, o qual instituiria a parada da parada. É ao encontro do conceito de missividade introduzido por Claude Zilberberg e ao seu posterior caminhar na semiótica tensiva que nossa pesquisa se apresenta. Em paralelo, nos utilizaremos de textos literários de dois autores contemporâneos brasileiros Delmo Montenegro e Valêncio Xavier para a aplicação prática do fazer missivo e outros conceitos tensivos. Ao longo de nossa dissertação caminharemos, pois, em duas direções: a releitura e síntese do desenvolvimento do conceito de missividade no modelo tensivo e a extensão e vantagem de sua aplicação em textos literários. Recently, Greimasian semiotics has seen the development of a new position regarding the approach of the universe of meaning. The so-called tensive semiotics, developed mainly by Claude Zilberberg, brings forth the discussion on some issues neither explored nor clarified by Greimas\'s model such as, for instance, the possibility of analyzing sensitive contents along with intelligible contents already contemplated by the canonical generative trajectory of meaning; or still the movement of transvaluation from one level to another. Amid such renewal of the Greimasian model, Zilberberg publishes, in 1986, the article \"Pour introduire le faire missif\" situated in RSSI magazine. Right from the beginning, Zilberberg presents us the concept of le faire missif as an attempt to give syntax its deserved space in semiotics, so that the former would not be seen simply as a mobilizer of semantics, but possessing its own activity. Such concept (le faire missif) is then divided into two basic activities: a remissive (rémissif) one, which would promote the continuity of the process, and an emissive (émissif) one, which would promote the halt of the process. Our research currently moves towards the concept of le faire missif introduced by Claude Zilberberg and its subsequent path in tensive semiotics. Meanwhile, we will make use of literary texts by two contemporary Brazilian writers Delmo Montenegro and Valêncio Xavier for the practical application of the missive activity and other tensive concepts. During our dissertation we will then move in two directions: re-reading and synthesizing the development of the concept of le faire missif in the tensive model and the extents and advantages of its application in literary texts.

Orientador: Gabriela Kvacek Betella Resumo: A presente tese apresenta uma análise comparada entre signos escatológicos, ou seja, relativos à morte, presentes nos contos de Machado de Assis e nos episódios da série televisiva Black Mirror. Amparado pelos preceitos conceituais da Semiótica Interpretativa e pelo modelo metodológico enciclopédico-cognitivo de Umberto Eco, este trabalho apresenta, a princípio, uma discussão teórica realizando um recorte crítico sobre o autor brasileiro e sobre a tipologia das narrativas seriadas audiovisuais contemporâneas, a fim de respaldar o traquejo analítico empreendido. A proposta central desta pesquisa é confrontar processos de elaboração sígnica os quais envolvam questões tanatológicas em oito narrativas: Nosedive e O Espelho, White Bear e A Causa Secreta, San Junipero e A Segunda Vida, e Be Right Back e Um Esqueleto, do programa britânico e da literatura machadiana, respectivamente. Tal labor reflexivo reconhece a inserção dessas produções em um continuum sígnico, situando-as como expressões das mentalidades de seus tempos em vias escatológicas. Para concatenar tais percepções, esta tese forja o pensamento enciclopédico esboçado pelo semioticista italiano, lançando-se na escavação das representações da morte, do paraíso e as atitudes humanas diante do esgotamento da vida desde a Antiguidade Clássica até os dias atuais, por vieses históricos, culturais e sociais, permitindo que se crie um panorama-arcabouço acerca desses signos no decorrer dos tempos e suas ressonâncias. (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) Abstract: This thesis presents a comparative analysis between eschatological signs, that is, concerning death, present in Machado de Assis' short stories and in the episodes of the Black Mirror television series. Supported by the theoretical precepts of Umberto Eco's Interpretive Semiotics and encyclopedic-cognitive methodological model, this work introduces an academic discussion, making a critical cut about the brazilian author and the contemporary audiovisual serial narratives typology, to support the analytical approach undertaken. This research main purpose is to confront sign elaboration processes that involve tanatological questions at eight narratives: Nosedive and The Mirror, White Bear and The Secret Cause, San Junipero and The Second Life, and Be Right Back and A Skeleton, from the british program and Machado's literature, respectively. Such reflexive work recognizes the insertion of these productions in a signic continuum, situating them as expressions of their times mentalities in eschatological ways. Supportato dai precetti concettuali della Semiotica Interpretativa e dal modello metodologico enciclopedi-cognitivo di Umberto Eco, questo lavoro presenta, all’inizio, una discussione teorica, da un ritaglio critico sull’autore brasiliano e sulla tipologia delle narrazioni seriali audiovisive contemporanee, al fine di sostenere l’approcio analitico adottato. O presente trabalho consiste numa abordagem semiótica da obra literária de Lourenço Mutarelli, a qual compreende três romances: O Cheiro do Ralo, O Natimorto e Jesus Kid. Os textos são estudados com base em desenvolvimentos promovidos por semioticistas na área de semiótica poética e literatura; no que diz respeito a essa última, sobretudo as colaborações de Denis Bertrand em seu livro Caminhos da Semiótica Literária. Por conta das características do autor estudado, se propõem discussões a respeito de ethos, veredicção, enunciador e narrador; conceitos mais diretamente ligados à retórica e a Análise do Discurso. This work consists of a boarding semiotics of the literary composition of Lourenço Mutarelli, who wrote three romances: O Cheiro do Ralo, O Natimorto and Jesus Kid. The texts are studied on the basis of developments promoted in the area of poetical semiotics and litereray semiotics. Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to carry out an analysis of the novel A Hora da Estrela (1977) and the film A Hora da Estrela (1986), based on the perspectives of the Semiotics and the Intersemiotics Translation. Theory the study shows that it is possible to involve distinct languagens in the process of different kinds of Things. Starting from a study of the translating and its conceptions, we discuss the adaptation process of the novel for the seventh art, so as to interweave of the different languages. The analysis is founded on the idea that adaptations can not be considered as faithful or unfaithful, in fact, they are recreations, transpositions, or transcreations in the words of Haroldo de Campos. The theoretical perspective of the study is based on the work of authors such as Júlio Plaza, Eisenstein, Gorlée, Benedito Nunes, in order to provide a richer support to the theoretical and critical analysis of both of literary text and the film, focusing on the intersemiotic dialogues in A Hora da Estrela. They were examined in the light of the literary text as a re-reading of Suzana Amaral whose work establishes a dialogue with as well as interpenetrates the work of Clarice Lispector (1977), offering an updated approach to the construction of the cinematographic narrative. Este estudo tem por objetivo realizar uma análise do texto literário A Hora da Estrela (1977) e do filme A Hora da Estrela (1986), sob o ponto de vista da teoria semiótica e da tradução intersemiótica. Busca-se mostrar que o processo da tradução entre linguagens distintas é possível e abrangente, uma vez que envolve a literatura (como base) e o cinema articulados com diferentes tipos de signos. A partir do estudo da tradução e seus conceitos, discutir-se-á o processo de adaptação do romance para o cinema, de forma a viabilizar o entrecruzamento de linguagens e o trânsito dos signos. Entendemos que as adaptações fílmicas não podem ser consideradas apenas fiéis ou infiéis, mas sim, recriações que têm por base matrizes verbais literárias, conforme postula Haroldo de Campos (1980). Com o objetivo de complementar nossa análise teórica e crítica sobre A Hora da Estrela - livro e filme, Do Texto Literário ao filme: diálogos intersemióticos em A Hora da Estrela, objeto e título desta pesquisa, utilizamos instrumentais teóricos de autores que compartilham nosso percurso de discussão, tais como Júlio Plaza (1987), Eisenstein (2002), Gorlée (1993), Benedito Nunes (1989). Esses teóricos possibilitou-nos estudar o texto literário como se pôde a partir de uma releitura poética de Suzana Amaral, que em sua obra dialoga e interpenetra semioticamente a obra de Clarice Lispector atualizando-a na construção da narração cinematográfica e com quais as condições em que se deu esta recriação.

Habilitacijos procedūrai teikiamuose mokslo darbuose (monografijoje Laiko įkaitė ir partnerė: Lietuvių literatūros kritika 1945–2000 ir straipsniuose) tiriama sovietinės ir posovietinės lietuvių literatūros kritikos raida 1945–2000 metais. Pirmoje tyrimo dalyje, skirtoje sovietmečio literatūros kritikai, išryškinama svarbiausios kritikos raidos tendencijos bei jas lėmę veiksniai, aptariamas socialistinio realizmo reiškinys, apibūdinamos literatūros kritikos metodologinės orientacijos. Daugiausia dėmesio skiriama pirmajam pokario dešimtmečiui, kai literatūros kritika represinėmis priemonėmis buvo priversta tapti komunistų partijos ideologijos diegimo įrankiu. Vėliau, pradedant nuo šeštojo dešimtmečio vidurio, tyrimo centru tampa literatūros kritikos sąlygiškas laisvėjimas, modernėjimas, gabiausiems kritikams renkantis sociologinei meno traktuotei alternatyvias metodologijas: fenomenologiją, struktūralizmą, recepcijos teoriją. [toliau žr. visą tekstą] The research works submitted for the habilitation procedure (the monograph Hostage and Partner of Time: Soviet and Post-Soviet Lithuanian Literary Criticism (1945–2000) and articles) analyse the development of Soviet and post-Soviet Lithuanian literary criticism from 1945 to 2000. The first part of the research deals with Soviet-era literary criticism and highlights the most important tendencies in its development, reveals the factors that influenced that development, discusses the phenomenon of Socialist Realism, and examines the methodological orientation of literary criticism. The analysis focuses on the first post-war decade, when literary criticism was forced to become a tool for the propagation of the Communist Party ideology. Later, beginning with the mid-1950’s, the analysis concentrates on the relative liberation of literary criticism and its modernisation, which came about as a result of the most skilled critics choosing alternative methodologies rather than the sociological art interpretation: phenomenology, structuralism, and reception theory. The work interweaves texts that bounce from apparent autonomy to polifonic intermingling, as a result of its graphic treatment. Typography, shadows of gray, quotes that were appropriated from the original book, screen shots from material written in several moments of the research. Text written with the visible marks of this polifony, breaking the illusion that the text continues, since it registers an univocal voice. Text that browses through its pages a kind of writing that goes beyond the print culture. Instead of using verbal marks to build authoritative coherence, it uses graphic resources to stress how each text is always inhabited by other texts. writt-END develops, among others, the following topics: are, among others: the mixtures that characterize contemporary culture often described as hybrid, crossbred and, recently, remixed; the types of experimental writing, on several media (book, hologram, video), with special focus on the digitally orientended examples; the relations between poetry and technology; the relations between poetry and technology, obseving particularly how technology influences writing; digital language and video, speculating if DVD and broadband internet will contribute to a more auiovisually oriented culture. On the context of a recycling culture, possible due to the multimedial sampling capacities of the personal computer, the work faces a kind of interrelation that goes beyond the boundaries of intertextuality and intersemiose. The prototype interface on the DVD, In the land of palms and threes, complete this thesis approaching the problem from a different angle. ex-Crever? literatura, linguagem, tecnologia estuda como a mediação afeta a escrita. O trabalho entrelaça textos que, apesar da aparente autonomia, revelam por meio da disposição gráfica a trama polifônica em que estão inseridos. Diferentes tipo de letra, tons de cinza, citações em forma de apropriação do livro original, telas capturadas que incorporam textos escritos em momentos diferentes da pesquisa. Escrita organizada a partir das marcas visíveis dessa polifonia, quebra da ilusão de que o texto continua, por ser o suposto registro de uma voz unívoca. Texto que procura entre suas páginas um tipo de escrita posterior à escrita verbal que predominou durante a cultura impressa. Spectral Evidence is a collection of poems that instigates a variety of omens, signs, divinations, and folktales to explore the concept of wish fulfillment. They arise in obedience to the compulsion to repeat past dramas brought on by failed love, the nostalgia of childhood, the damning legacy of language, the restriction of gender roles, death, etc. In order to quell these anxieties, the speaker looks beyond the self to both history and mythology, often invented mythologies as an attempt to control or recast the story-to give shape to the obscurities of life by creating a system of belief in order to forge meaning or confuse oneself into believing. In many ways this collection is all about belief or in wanting to believe. Through language, God is written into existence. God is the name of the blanket we put over the mystery to give it shape. Here, in this collection, God is an ant's egg. a cherry pit, a colony of white moths, a severed hand, the color red, a little bird. This collection explores these vehicles of meaning, the words that provide the shell of meaning, and the power of invention in hopes to gain control over what is deemed uncontrollable. While the speaker may be casting omens as "pre-ordained" entities outside of her power, it is her convictions in these signs that her own psychological and associative link between their meaning and their appearance that she conjures and creates because the existing systems of language, religion, and belief do not serve her. This creation is what is powerful. It is healing. It is birth. It is not involuntary wish fulfillment. It is the deliberative satisfaction of desire-on of the most insurrectionary acts a woman can execute.

Abstract:

To interpret a poem is to comprehend a complete act of written communication. And to comprehend such an act, the reader must break the codes in which the communication is framed. Thus, poetic interpretation becomes the study of codes--or semiotics. Poetic codes exist at pragmatic, semantic, syntactic, and phonic levels. The decoding requires the reader's linguistic skills, literary competence, and personal experience. It involves an initial reading and a retroactive reading. At the first step, the reader attempts to supply elements missing in the text. Yet trying to interpret the text literally, he encounters problems in pragmatics, semantics, syntactics, or phonics, and is unable to grasp a coherent sense of the poem. Those problems give rise to a retroactive reading. At this step, the reader looks for a higher level of understanding where a unity of meaning can be identified. And by explaining the clues in the text according to his linguistic and literary competence, and revising his understanding on the basis of his new findings, he finally discovers a kernel concept, on which the whole text can be seen as a single unit, and every element, which first appeared to be puzzling, has a significative purpose. This semiotic model of interpretation has proven to be very fruitful in the explication of Tu Mu's poetry. It also enables the reader to appreciate the poetic discourse more thoroughly. Some of the ideas advocated by the model may also serve as principles for the translation of poetry. For example, in reading a poem, the model requires a search for unified pragmatic, semantic, syntactic, and phonic patterns, which convey the kernel concept. Thus, in translating a poem, the translator should also try to re-produce in the target language such unified patterns so that the reader may grasp the same kernel concept as contained in the original discourse. The model stresses implicities of poetry. Hence the rendition of a poem should preserve the implicities of the original text in order to invoke from the reader a response similar to what would be induced by the original poem.

A literatura infantil desperta um duplo interesse: a história narrada pelo texto verbal e a depreendida das imagens que ilustram as capas e as páginas. Enquanto o texto verbal pode levar o leitor a uma compreensão do mundo e de valores culturais e morais, o texto visual pode despertar os sentidos pela experiência estésica. Do escrito ao tocado, do lido ao experimentado, o aprendizado é feito sob diferentes materialidades e discursos. Este trabalho delimita-se a analisar cinco livros destinados ao público infanto-juvenil com ilustrações feitas pelo grupo mineiro de bordadeiros Matizes-Dumont: Exercícios de ser criança, de Manoel de Barros; A moça tecelã, de Marina Colasanti; Menino do rio doce, de Ziraldo; A bola e o goleiro, de Jorge Amado; A menina, a gaiola e a bicicleta/Céu de passarinho, de Rubem Alves e Carlos Brandão. A fundamentação teórica adotada para a análise desse corpus é a semiótica francesa, abarcando seus desdobramentos recentes, como a semiótica das paixões, a semiótica plástica, a enunciação e a tensividade. Os desdobramentos tensivos, por sinal, caminham livremente em todas as análises como efeito de sentido. A possibilidade de trabalhar com diferentes linhas de análise, demonstra a riqueza desse corpus que ora mostra sua força no texto verbal, ora ganha status de arte ao oferecer ao enunciatário/leitor uma gama de imagens que despertam o estético e o estésico. Temos, portanto, ao longo dos enunciados infanto-juvenis, a presença de diálogos plurilinguísticos e polissensoriais. A figuratividade, tão presente e marcante neste trabalho, segue as propostas de Denis Bertrand. Outro teórico relevante a esta pesquisa é Jean-Marie Floch, com suas linhas de pesquisa a respeito do visual/pictórico, ao inserir novas categorias (constitucionais e relacionais) de análise para o plano da expressão. Pela própria natureza dos objetos analisados, percorre-se o caminho do estético, já que este se manifesta mediante práticas cotidianas. Esse percurso apresenta um marco importante no livro Da Imperfeição, de Algirdas Julien Greimas, que analisa textos-objeto de valor estético, depreendendo seu sentido e seu caráter sensível, em que o plano da expressão passa a ser a força motriz da obra. As descrições do autor sobre alguns textos literários mostram a elasticidade do discurso, que vai além da superfície do texto. Ainda a respeito da questão plástica, outras fontes teóricas estão presentes com o intuito de enriquecer e expandir as análises, procurando sempre manter o intercâmbio entre a semiótica e outras propostas de análise do pictórico. Diante dessas informações técnicas das artes plásticas, que possuem sua linguagem própria, torna-se possível montar uma grade de leitura dos textos-objeto. Embora este trabalho trilhe pelo caminho da semiótica, tratar de textos infantis nos obriga a ter informações consistentes sobre o universo teórico da literatura. Daí o acréscimo de livros sobre este universo, incluindo obras específicas sobre literatura infantil, ilustração e diagramação. Dessa forma, dentro dos objetivos de examinar os mecanismos de construção do sentido em textos de literatura infanto-juvenis, cada livro é analisado de acordo com a teoria da semiótica discursiva ou a da semiótica plástica. Em A moça tecelã trabalha-se com as paixões no texto verbal com o intuito de apreender os efeitos de sentido de qualificações modais, aspectuais e estruturais que modificam o sujeito patemizado. Pela obra sincrética de Manoel de Barros são descritas as estratégias de enunciação, apontando os recursos utilizados para a construção de sentido nos textos verbais e visuais. A intertextualidade pontua o trabalho de Ziraldo ao dialogar com as obras infanto-juvenis do escritor norteamericano Mark Twain, acrescentando-se, na análise, as experiências estéticas relacionadas com as paixões. O último capítulo trata do imagético, fazendo um contraponto entre as capas dos livros A bola e o goleiro e A menina, a gaiola e a bicicleta/Céu de passarinhos, fundamentando-se em Floch e seus sucessores teóricos. Por meio dessas análises busca-se acrescentar aos estudos dos textos literários e plásticos infanto-juvenis possíveis mecanismos de leitura, tendo como ferramenta teórica a semiótica francesa. Childrens literature brings two different concerns: the story told by the verbal text, and the one brought by the images of the book cover and of the book. The visual text can awake the senses by an aesthetic experience while what is written on the book can take the reader to a comprehension of the world and of the cultural and moral values. The learning is made possible by different matters and discourses; from whats written to whats touched, from whats read to whats experienced. This essay was delimited to the analyses of five books made specific to children, with illustrations made by a group of embroideress from Minas Gerais called Matizes-Dumont: Exercícios de ser criança, by Manoel de Barros; A moça tecelã, by Marina Colasanti; Menino do rio doce, by Ziraldo; A bola e o goleiro, by Jorge Amado; A menina, a gaiola e a bicicleta/Céu de passarinho, by Rubem Alves and Carlos Brandão. The theoretical basis used for the analyses of this subject is the French Semiotics, also with its deployments such as the Semiotics of Passion, Semiotics of Arts, the Enunciation, and the Tensile Semiotics. In reality, the Tensile Semiotics one goes freely through all the analyses as a sense, or meaning, effect. The possibility of working with different forms of analyses brought up the importance of the material. It shows the strength of the verbal text, and, also, the importance of the material as a work of art since it offers to the readers a number of images that awakes the esthetic and aesthetic. The dialogues are plurilinguistic and polisensorial. The figuratively, well noticed on this essay, follows the developments made by Denis Bertrand. Other important scholar for this research is Jean-Marie Floch, and its ways of working over the visual/pictorial, adding new categories (constitutionals and relational) of analyses for the expression plane. We follow the trails of the esthetic based on the nature of the analyzed objects, since its expressed over ordinary way of working. This course presents an important door on Algidas Julien Greimas book, De l\'imperfection (Of the Imperfection), wich analyses texts-objects of esthetic value, gathering its meaning from the sense, and the expression plane became the main force on the work piece. His descriptions about some literary texts shows us the elasticity of a discourse, going beyond the surface of the text. Yet on the plastic art field, other theoretical sources are present, so it would enrich and enlarge the analyses, always trying to keep the interchange between semiotics, and other forms of analyses of the pictorial. From all these technical information about the plastic art, that contains its own language, its possible for us to show the screen of reading of the text-object. Working with childrens texts forces us to have consistent information about the theoretical universe of this literature, even though the essay goes through the semiotics field. We understand from that the choice of using a book of this field, including specific works about childrens literature, illustration and sketch. This way, each book was analyzed according to a theory of the discursive semiotics or of the plastic art semiotics. On the book A Moça Tecelã, we work with the passions on the verbal text, trying to pay attention to the effects of the sense by the modal, the aspectual, and the structural qualifiers that change the pathetic reaction of the subject. By Manoel de Barros syncretic work we describe the strategies of the enunciation, showing the resources used for the construction of the verbal and visual texts. The intertextuality on Ziraldos work is noticed by his dialog with childrens works made by the north-American author Mark Twain, adding, on the analyses, the esthetic experiences related to the passions. The last chapter talks about the images, creating a counterpoint between the covers of the books A bola e o goleiro, and A menina, a gaiola e a bicicleta/Céu de passarinhos, based on Floch and his theoretical successors. With this essay, weve tried to add possible ways of reading the childrens literature and plastic art using the French Semiotics theoretical tools.

Esta dissertação tem como objetivo entender como se dá a interação da criança com o livro-brinquedo. Para tanto, como referencial teórico, se apoia nos estudos da semiótica discursiva enfocando os regimes de interação propostos por Landowski (2009) no contato das crianças com essas produções. A partir de um levantamento das premiações da Fundação Nacional do Livro Infantil e Juvenil (FNLIJ) na categoria livro-brinquedo, da acessibilidade aos livros premiados, de possuírem uma narrativa adequada à faixa etária que a pesquisa compreende e de ter mais possibilidades de interação, foram selecionados três livros para análise. Para a interação com os livros foi selecionada uma turma de alunos de cinco anos, de uma escola de educação infantil, da cidade de Porto Alegre (RS). De cunho qualitativo, a pesquisa consistiu num estudo exploratório e se utilizou de vídeo-gravação para análise da interação criança/livro. A partir das falas das crianças e também das suas manifestações de comportamento, foi possível constatar como elas interagiram com o livro-brinquedo. Os principais regimes de interação percebidos na relação criança/livro foram os regimes da programação, acidente e ajustamento. Os resultados apontam alguns indícios de como podemos usar esses livros nas salas de aulas e como os pais podem melhor escolhê-los. Também foi possível evidenciar como se faz importante o ensino da leitura de imagem na escola numa sociedade onde a imagem está presente a todo o momento, mas que pouco se reflete sobre o que é mostrado. This research aims to understand how children interact with toy books. In order to do that, the theorethical reference is based on the dircursive semiotics focusing the interactive regimes, proposed by Landowski (2009), in toy books and in the children contact with the productions. Three books to be analyzed were selected based on a research of the awards of Fundação Nacional do Livro Infantil e Juvenil (FNLIJ) in the category toy books, market availability of award books, books narrative appropriate to the age that research comprises and of the amount of interactive possibilities. Five year students from a kindergarten school of Porto Alegre, RS, in Brazil, were selected to interact with the chosen books. The research has a qualitative emphasis; it is an exploratory study using video recording to analyze children interaction with toy books. Their behavior and talking were used to observe how they interact with the toy books. The main interactive regimes perceived during the interaction were programming regimes, accident and adjustment. The results show some evidences of how we can use these books in classrooms and how parents can better select them. It was also possible to determinate how important is the teaching of image reading in school, in a society where image is present at all times, but that very little is reflected on what is shown.

Abstract:

In The Holy Kinship (1500-1510), the artist Matthäus Gutrecht the Younger defies convention by portraying the importance of matriarchy, via the semiotics of the nimbus. Within Christian art, the nimbus has been widely used as a signifier of divinity. Saints and angels, as well as members of the Holy Family, are often depicted nimbed in the history of art. In particular, men of divine status are frequently nimbed, as Christianity was predominantly patriarchal. However, there are several cases in which women are also represented with this divine signifier. One work in which the nimbus as a signifier of matriarchal status and lineage is epitomized is Gutrecht's portrayal of The Holy Kinship, in which the women, but not the men, are shown nimbed. This thesis explores the varied significance of the matriarchal nimbus. Furthermore, it challenges traditional patriarchal analyses of late medieval, German culture in order to examine how this altarpiece both reflects and constructs attitudes regarding a celebration of women's spiritual and secular roles. In this way, the painting presents a direct challenge to the more familiar representation of patriarchal lineage and power in Tree of Jesse images.

As Metamorfoses são um longo poema em versos hexâmetros, composto de quinze livros, que trata do surgimento dos elementos que compõem o mundo e da transformação ocorrida com diversos seres mitológicos em uma narrativa contínua. No trecho selecionado para a análise, conta-se a transformação de uma bela jovem na árvore da mirra, após cometer incesto com o próprio pai, Cíniras, rei de Chipre. Em um trabalho desenvolvido como pesquisa de IC intitulado “Poética e Figuratividade: uma análise de ‘Io’ (Ovídio, Metamorfoses, I, 583-747)”, procurou-se concentrar na primeira etapa dos processos de figuratividade, isto é, na figuração do discurso, quando um tema é revestido por figuras semióticas. Tomando os efeitos de sentido captados pela percepção e apreendidos por meio da leitura como dados de base, pretende-se investigar no corpus o arranjo particular da linguagem. Como resultado dessa investigação produziu-se um discurso metalinguístico a fim de reconhecer os recursos da figuratividade poética determinantes da expressão. Ainda, como base para o desenvolvimento do trabalho, será produzida uma tradução de estudo (literal) acompanhada de notas de referência, com comentários concernentes a dados gerais de cultura (mitologia, história, geografia, filosofia, etc.). This research is a proposal to investigate the figurative poetics in the Latin text, drawing on the theoretical tools provided by Poetics and Literary Semiotics, with the corpus of the episode "Cinyras and Myrrha", integrating part of the Metamorphoses (Book X, 298-502), by Ovid (43 BC - 17 AD), regarded as one of the greatest poets of Ancient Rome. The Metamorphoses is a long poem in hexameter verses, separated into fifteen books. It depicts the creation of elements of the world and the transmutations of several mythological beings, with a narration that takes place in a continuous form. The selected passage for analysis recounts the transformation of a beautiful young woman into the myrrh tree, after committing incest with her own father, Cinyras, the king of Cyprus. In an already developed undergraduation research entitled “Poetics and Figurativity: an analysis of ‘Io’ (Ovid, Metamorphoses, I, 583-747), we have focused on the first step of the figuration process, that being the figuration of speech, when a subject is covered with semiotic figures. Considering the effects of meaning captured by perception and seized by careful reading as database, we intend to investigate in the corpus particular arrangements of language. The result of this research has produced a metalinguistic discourse to recognize the features of poetical figurativity that are determinants to the expression. Furthermore, as a basis for the development of this work, we will produce a literal study translation, accompanied by background notes, and comments concerning general data culture, such as mythology, history, geography, philosophy, etc.

Em 1990, a publicação do livro Immigrato de Salah Methnani e Mario Fortunato marcou o início do movimento sócio-literário que veio a ser chamado pelos estudiosos letteratura italiana della migrazione. A partir de então, o número desses autores imigrados cresceu de forma exponencial e, atualmente, já se fala, inclusive, em uma segunda geração de escritores. Trata-se de autores das mais variadas nacionalidades, que apresentam os mais diversos estilos literários e cujas contribuições sócio-culturais são ainda estigmatizadas sob a alcunha de literatura migrante. Existem alguns estudos recentes que propõem alterar a nomenclatura, buscando atenuar os efeitos estereotípicos em relação a esses escritores e suas obras, embora ainda se mantenha a divisão clara entre produções de imigrados e de italianos. Este trabalho procura entender quais são as condições invariáveis de produção que fizeram com que todas as obras escritas por imigrados fossem consideradas indistintamente como pertencentes a um mesmo grupo. Nesse contexto, colocamos em discussão tanto a crítica quanto as obras, na busca de critérios e características comuns que poderiam explicar a situação em que estes autores se encontram. Dentro da rica produção da letteratura italiana della migrazione, escolhemos trabalhar com o conto Perla Nera, de Rosana Crispim da Costa, uma brasileira que mora e escreve na Itália, cuja produção deixa transparecer essa dualidade. Através da análise das características específicas desse texto, procuraremos identificar se, de fato, a obra escolhida pode ser considerada como literatura italiana da migração ou se, por outro lado, o texto em si fornece algumas pistas interpretativas que levariam a outros caminhos de classificação. In 1990, the publication of the book Immigrato by Salah Methnani and Mario Fortunato marked the beginning of a socio-literary movement that will be called by the scholars as letteratura italiana della migrazione. Since then, the number of these immigrant authors grew exponentially and currently there is even an idea of a second generation of writers. These authors are from worldwide and present a wide variety of literary styles, whose socio-cultural contributions are still stigmatized under the name of migrant literature. There are some recent studies that propose to change the nomenclature, trying to mitigate the stereotypical effects about these writers and their works, although the clear difference between immigrant and Italian productions still remains. This study was proposed to understand, at first, what are the invariable production conditions that made all the books written by immigrants to be considered as belonging to the same group alike. In this context, we should put on discussion both critics and the foreigners works to search for a criteria and common characteristics that could explain the situation in which these authors are. Within the rich production of the letteratura italiana della migrazione we choose to work directly with the short story Perla Nera, by Rosana Crispim da Costa, a brazilian woman who lives and writes in Italy, whose production reveals this duality. By analyzing the specific characteristics of this text, we will try to identify if, for the matter of fact, this work can be considered as italian-immigrant or if, on the other hand, the text itself provides some interpretative clues that would lead to other ways of classification.

O trabalho que se apresenta tem por objetivo investigar a composição gráfica dos livros infantis. O corpus da pesquisa compreende as décadas de 1980 e 1990 e os primeiros anos do século XXI, em Portugal e no Brasil, a partir da seleção dos autores Manuela Bacelar (Portugal) e Roger Mello (Brasil). A escolha do corpus se justifica, pois ambos são, inicialmente, ilustradores para, em seguida, tornarem-se autores com dupla vocação, isto é, produtores de textos verbais e visuais. Além dessa característica, ambos desenvolveram uma produção literária voltada ao público infantil em que impera a diversidade de estratégias e relações entre sistemas semióticos, por exemplo: autores de livros de imagens, autoresilustradores de livros ilustrados e autores de livros-álbum. Essa última modalidade, em que há a integração dos textos verbal e visual, está no centro das discussões. A reflexão sobre o desenvolvimento desse gênero de texto à luz da Semiótica discursiva de linha francesa, a qual também fundamentará todas análises realizadas, compõe o primeiro capítulo deste trabalho de tese. Em seguida, abremse as portas para os livros infantis portugueses e o desenvolvimento do livro-álbum em Portugal, bem como serão realizadas análises minuciosas de três obras de Manuela Bacelar, a saber: O dinossauro (1990), A sereiazinha (1995) e Sebastião (2004). Cada uma das obras será abordada tendo em vista as diferentes relações entre palavra e imagem e a composição final em um projeto gráfico que deveria constituir um todo de sentido. Assim, as obras se diferenciam, pois O dinossauro é um livro-álbum, em que Bacelar é autora de dupla vocação; A sereiazinha é um livro-ilustrado, em que a autora portuguesa ilustra o clássico de Hans Christian Andersen e Sebastião exemplifica aquele gênero, em que, por meio de imagens, a artista plástica conta a história. No terceiro capítulo, o contexto brasileiro é colocado em foco e surge o trabalho em equipe, ou seja, uma equipe de profissionais é formada para criar o objeto-livro, e essa transforma-se em uma característica fundamental para a história do gênero livro-álbum no Brasil. Roger Mello é um autor bastante representativo dessa corrente artística e suas obras eleitas para análise se destacam pela produção em equipe e pela constituição de diferentes relações (ou grau de relações) entre palavra e imagem na composição do projeto gráfico. As seguintes obras serão analisadas com mais atenção: Jardins (2001) e Desertos (2006), texto verbal de Roseana Murray; Fita verde no cabelo: nova velha história (1992), em que Mello ilustra o conto de Guimarães Rosa e Vizinho, vizinha (2002), obra composta por uma equipe formada pelos artistas Mariana Massarani, Graça Lima e Roger Mello, e o último assina como autor do texto verbal. Finalmente, no quarto capítulo, é possível fazer um paralelo entre o contexto do livro-álbum e suas características nos cenários português e brasileiro, chegando a algumas invariantes, como a tendência ao traço pictórico em Portugal e ao grafismo no Brasil. Com isso, a partir de dois contextos particulares, vislumbra-se a importância do livro-álbum como um gênero cada vez mais presente no panorama da Literatura Infantil The presented dissertation intends to investigate the graphic composition of children\'s books. The corpus of the research comprises the decades from 1980 to 1990 and the first years of the 21st Century, in Portugal and in Brazil, based on the selection of authors Manuela Bacelar (Portugal) and Roger Mello (Brazil). The choice of the corpus is justified because both were illustrators at first and then have become authors with double talent, that\'s to say, verbal and visual text producers. Besides this characteristic, both have developed a literary production dedicated to the juvenile public, based on the diversity of strategies and relations among semiotics systems, such as: picture books\' authors, picture books illustratorauthors\' and album formatted books\' authors. This last mentioned modality of text, in which there is integration between texts (verbal and visual) is in the center of the discussions and the consideration about its development in light of the French discursive Semiotics, that will also validate every analysis made and constitute the first chapter of this thesis dissertation.Following, the door to Portuguese children\'s books and to the development of album formatted books in such country are opened; also, there will be a detailed analysis of three works by Manuela Bacelar: O dinossauro (1990), A sereiazinha(1995) and Sebastião (2004). Each of the works will be approached considering the different relations between word-image and final composition in a graphic project that should constitute a whole. So, the works differ one from the other, as O dinossauro is a album-book, in which Bacelar is a double talented author; A sereiazinha is an illustrated-book, in which the Portuguese author illustrates the Hans Christian Andersen\'s classic and Sebastião exemplifies the genre in which, by means of images, the plastic artist tells the history. In the third chapter, the Brazilian context is focused and the teamwork emerges, as in the production of comic books, and becomes a key characteristic to the album-book genre\'s history in Brazil. Roger Mello is an author quite representative of this \'artistic tendency\' and the works chosen to be analyzed stand out by their team production and by their different relations\' (or relation degrees\') constitution between word and image in the composition of the graphic project. The following works will be analyzed with deeper attention: Jardins (2001) and Desertos (2006) verbal text of Roseana Murray; Fita verde no cabelo: nova velha história (1992), in which Mello ilustrates the tale of Guimarães Rosa and Vizinho, vizinha (2002), a work created by a team composed by the artists: Mariana Massarani, Graça Lima and Roger Mello and, still, the last signs it as its verbal text\'s author.Finally, in the fourth chapter it is possible to make a comparison between the album-book context and its characteristics in the Portuguese and in the Brazilian scenery, reaching some constants, such as the tendency to the pictorial trace in Portugal and to the graphism in Brazil.Therefore, from the two particular contexts, we can have a notion of the album-book as a genre increasingly present in the Juvenile Literature scene

Abstract:

A relevância da imagem como texto produtor de sentido, único ou associado ao verbal, na constituição do livro literário infantil tem sido discutida em diferentes estudos internacionais e nacionais. Observa-se, porém, uma lacuna de pesquisas que enfoquem como a leitura da imagem na literatura infantil pode ser abordada no contexto escolar. Buscamos com essa pesquisa propor a leitura mediada do livro de imagem no Ensino Fundamental, compreendendo-a como prática de interação e sentido que auxilia no letramento visual. Assim, na primeira parte caracterizamos dois elementos deflagradores deste estudo: o livro de imagem e o Programa Nacional Biblioteca da Escola (PNBE). No segundo momento, delimitamos e problematizamos as ações implicadas na realização do estudo: ler, mediar e letrar. Na terceira parte, situamos teórica e metodologicamente o modo como compreendemos a produção e a apreensão de sentido. Para isso descrevemos conceitos da semiótica discursiva (GREIMAS, 2004; FLOCH, 1985a, 1985b, 2001; OLIVEIRA, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2005) que nos permitem entender como o sentido pode se constituir em relação aos objetos, aos sujeitos e às suas interações. Valendo-nos da semiótica plástica, abordamos os aspectos estruturais do texto-imagem, buscando analisar os efeitos de sentido que a linguagem visual cria no objeto. Com base no desenrolar contemporâneo da teoria semiótica, caracterizamos modos de ser e agir dos sujeitos (LANDOWSKI 2009), em interação com objetos e entre si, e como produzem sentidos, revelando comportamentos que permitem distinguir regimes de interação e sentido. O estudo se dividiu em dois momentos: 1) leitura estrutural de três livros de imagem escolhidos para o estudo; 2) duas ações distintas de leitura mediada de livros de imagem do Acervo PNBE 2010, envolvendo três professoras da rede pública estadual do Rio Grande do Sul e alunos da escola onde elas atuavam. A primeira ação leitora, organizou-se em três encontros nos quais as professoras puderam refletir sobre a leitura do livro de imagem e exercitar o seu olhar leitor. A partir desse exercício, as professoras organizaram a segunda ação de leitura mediada, na qual propuseram uma mediação para uma das obras lidas com seu grupo de alunos do Ensino Fundamental. Essas duas prática distintas de leitura permitiramnos observar os modos de ser e agir das professoras como leitoras e como esses comportamentos estiveram refletidos ou não, recursivamente, nas propostas de mediação organizadas por elas. Todo esse percurso teórico-prático-reflexivo permitiu-nos, por fim, na quinta parte, definir alguns princípios para uma abordagem de letramento visual que tenha o livro de imagem como objeto e a leitura mediada como ação. The relevance of image as a text able to produce meaning, by itself or associated to verbal texts, in children’s literary books has been discussed in different national and international studies. However, it is possible to notice that there is a gap of researches which concentrate on how schools can deal with reading the image in children literature. This research proposes a mediated reading of wordless books in Elementary School, understanding this practice as interactive and meaningful, as well as a valuable to visual literacy. Thus, in the first part we characterize two elements that give rise to this study: the wordless book and the School Library National Program (PNBE). In the second part, we define and problematize the actions implied in the effort of this study: read, mediate and literate. The third section contextualizes the theoretical and methodological way of understanding the production and apprehension of meaning. In order to this, we describe the concepts of discursive semiotics (GREIMAS, 2004; FLOCH, 1985a, 1985b, 2001; OLIVEIRA, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2005) that allow us to comprehend how meaning can be constructed in relation to objects, subjects and their interactions. Dealing with plastic semiotics, we explore the structural aspects of text-image, analyzing the effects of meaning created by visual language in the object. Based on the contemporary development of the semiotic theory, we characterize ways of being and acting from the subjects (LANDOWSKI 2009), in interaction with objects and by themselves, and how they produce meaning, revealing behaviors that enable to distinguish arrangements of interaction and meaning. The study was divided in two parts:1) the structural reading of three wordless books selected to this study; 2) two different mediated reading activities of wordless books from the PNBE Collection to 2010, involving three teachers from the public school system of Rio Grande do Sul and the students from the school where they work. The first reading practice was organized in three meetings in which the teachers could reflect about wordless book reading and exercise their look of reading. Issued from these practices, the teachers organized the second activity of mediated reading in which they developed a reading mediation with one of the wordless books with their students from Elementary School. These two distinct reading practices enabled us to observe the ways of being and acting of the teachers as readers e how these behaviors has bee reflected or not, recursively, in their propositions of mediation. All this research way, theoretical-practical-reflexive, allowed us, in the end, at the fifth part, to define a few assumptions to an approach of visual literacy that deals with wordless books as the reading object in a mediated action. La importancia de la imagen como productora del significado, aislada o asociada a lo verbal, en la constitución del libro literario para niños se ha discutido en diferentes estudios, internacionales y nacionales. Hay, sin embargo, la falta de investigaciones que se centren en cómo la lectura de imagen en la literatura infantil puede ser abordada en el contexto escolar. Hemos intentado en esta investigación proponer la mediación de lectura del libro de dibujos en la educación primaria, entendiéndola como una práctica de interacción y sentido que ayuda en la alfabetización visual. Así, la primera parte caracteriza los dos factores desencadenantes de este estudio: el libro de imágenes y el “Programa Nacional Biblioteca da Escola” (PNBE). En un segundo momento, delimitamos e problematizamos las acciones involucradas: leer, mediar y letrar. En la tercera parte, situamos teórica y metodológicamente cómo comprendemos la producción de sentido y entendimiento. Para eso describimos conceptos de la semiótica discursiva (GREIMAS, 2004; FLOCH, 1985a, 1985b, 2001; OLIVEIRA, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2005) que nos permiten entender cómo el significado se puede constituir en relación con los objetos, los sujetos y sus interacciones. Sobre la base de la semiótica de plástica, nos dirigimos a los aspectos estructurales de la imagen-texto, analizando los efectos de sentido que el lenguaje visual crea en el objeto. Basándose en los avances de la teoría semiótica contemporánea, caracterizamos los modos de ser y de actuar de los sujetos (LANDOWSKI 2009), en interacción con los objetos o con otros sujetos, y cómo producen sentidos, revelando conductas que distinguen regímenes de interacción y sentido. El estudio se dividió en dos fases: 1) lectura estructural de tres libros de imagen elegidos para la investigación; 2) dos acciones distintas de lectura mediadas de los libros de imagen del acervo PNBE 2010, con tres maestras de una escuela pública de Río Grande do Sul y los alumnos de la escuela donde trabajaban. La primera actividad de lectura fue organizada en tres reuniones en las que las maestras podrían reflexionar sobre la lectura del libro ilustrado y el ejercicio de mirar como lectoras. A partir de este ejercicio, las maestras organizaron la segunda acción de lectura mediada, propusieron una mediación de las obras leídas con su grupo de alumnos de la escuela primaria. Estas dos prácticas distintas de lecturas nos permitieron observar las formas de ser y de actuar de los docentes como lectores y cómo estos comportamientos se reflejan o no, de forma recursiva, en la mediación organizada por ellos. Todo este recorrido prácticoteórico- reflexivo nos permitió por último, la quinta parte, definimos algunos principios para un enfoque de letramento visual que tiene el libro de imágenes como un objeto y la lectura mediada como acción.

It is about to understand the factors that forged the figure of the vampire in current cinema, especially regarding to its status as an undead male and to the arising horror effects. Thus, the object of study assumes two distinct phases: primary, enclosed by the figure of the vampire in film; and secondary, comprising a cutout of fantastic literature. Being hybrid, the research corpus comprises, at first, a set of works of the XV century called Dance macabre, plus a small sample of tales of the XVIII and XIX centuries with vampire theme, culminating in the work Dracula, by Bram Stoker, on 1897. Secondly, but more importantly, about a century set of extensive and representative vampire filmography that includes the transformation of the vampire image, starting with Nosferatu, on 1922; and finishing with Shadows of the Night, on 2011. The assumptions that guide the study deal with the relationship between the attraction exerted by the vampires and their increasing aestheticization; detachment between cinematic vampires and the literary array of Bram Stoker's Dracula and the consequent spread of reconfigurations of character retrieve the medieval influences. Forcibly multidisciplinary, the theoretical references of research include studies in Art History, History of Literature and the History of Cinema, as an instrument of semiotic analysis, which in this case will be Greimas for literature and Peirce for images. Supported by this background, the study also aims to contribute significantly to the study of the figure of the vampire, highlighting the influences that determined the existence of one of the most important horror characters of the first century of cinema Esta pesquisa tem como principal objetivo examinar o percurso da figura vampiresca no cinema, traçando uma linha de ancestralidade que se inicia nas primeiras influências encontradas na arte medieval, passando pelas transmutações no âmbito da literatura romântica gótica e chegando, contemporaneamente, a suas refigurações cinematográficas. Trata-se de compreender os fatores que forjaram as imagens e a figura do vampiro no cinema atual, especialmente no que se refere à sua condição de morto vivo do sexo masculino e aos efeitos de horror daí decorrentes. O objeto de estudos assume, desse modo, duas faces distintas: uma primária, delimitada pela figura do vampiro no cinema e outra secundária, constituída por um recorte de literaturas fantásticas. Sendo híbrido, o corpus da pesquisa compreende, num primeiro momento, um conjunto de obras do século XV, denominadas Danças Macabras, além de uma pequena amostra de contos dos séculos XVIII e XIX com tema vampiresco, que culminaram na obra Drácula, de Bram Stoker, de 1897. Num segundo momento, porém mais relevante, um extenso conjunto de filmes representativos de cerca de um século de filmografia vampiresca contempla as transformações da imagem vampiresca, iniciando por Nosferatu de 1922 e terminando com Sombras da Noite de 2011. As hipóteses que norteiam o estudo versam sobre: as relações entre a atração exercida pelos vampiros e sua crescente estetização; o distanciamento dos vampiros cinematográficos da matriz literária do Drácula de Bram Stoker e a consequente disseminação de reconfigurações da personagem que recuperam as influências medievais. Obrigatoriamente multidisciplinares, os referenciais teóricos da pesquisa compreendem estudos em História da Arte, História da Literatura e História do Cinema, assim como um instrumental de análise semiótica, que, neste caso, será greimasiano para a literatura e peirceano para as imagens. A pesquisa se caracteriza por uma análise teológica de textos de Jayme Caetano Braun, poeta tradicionalista gaúcho Galpão de Estância (1954), De Fogão em Fogão (1958), Brasil Grande do Sul e Paisagens Perdidas (1966) , conjugando as teorias da semiótica literária e da teologia da cultura. No primeiro capítulo, apresenta-se o referencial teórico da teologia da cultura de Paul Tillich, partindo-se do pressuposto de que a religião é o fundamento da cultura e de que a sua tarefa é trazer à superfície a substância profunda. Neste capítulo, ainda, busca-se estabelecer a semiótica literária, com Jakobson e Lotman, como ferramental de auxílio nesta tarefa hermenêutica. O segundo capítulo faz um levantamento das principais obras sobre teologia e literatura produzidas no Brasil. Finalmente, no terceiro e último capitulo, situa-se a obra de Jayme Caetano Braun no contexto da poesia gaúcha. A partir de uma divisão temática, procede-se à análise semiótico-literária dos textos, para então se estabelecer um olhar teológico sobre os mesmos. This research is characterized by a theological analysis of the texts of Jayme Caetano Braun, who is a southern Brazilian traditional poet Galpão de Estância (1954), De Fogão em Fogão (1958), Brasil Grande do Sul and Paisagens Perdidas (1966) , associating the literary theory of semiotics and the theology of culture. In the first chapter, the theoretical referential of Paul Tillichs theology of culture is introduced, starting from the presumption that religion is the foundation of culture and its task is to lift the deep substance to the surface. Yet in this chapter, using Jakobson and Lotman, the establishment of literary semiotics as a helping tool in this hermeneutic task is sought. The second chapter relates the results of an investigation of the main works about theology and literature produced in Brazil. Finally, in the third and last chapter, Jayme Caetano Brauns works are situated in the context of southern Brazilian poetry. Starting from a thematic division, the literary semiotic analysis proceeds in order to establish a theological vision about the theme.

Walker Percy thought a paradigm for the modern age, human beings, and life does not exist, and no paradigm vying for supremacy (religion, scientism, new age physics and philosophies) succeeds. He sought to create a “radical anthropology” to describe human beings and life. His anthropology has existential roots and culminates in the philosophy and semeiotic of American pragmatist Charles Sanders Peirce. Unlike any other creature, humans have symbolic capacity, first manifested in a child’s naming and demonstrated in human being’s unique language ability, the ability to communicate through symbol and not just sign. Percy conveyed his anthropology in his last three novels through a number symbolism corresponding to the theme of each novel based on Peirce’s Cenopythagoreanism, viewing the world through the paradigm of number. In Lancelot, Percy uses the symbol of the inverted three to illustrate Lancelot’s inverted search for evil. In The Second Coming, he uses diamonds and squares and fours to illustrate community and authentic communication in the novel. In The Thanatos Syndrome, he uses twos and sixes to represent the search for dyadic solutions to triadic problems. Percy sees a synechistic and synchronistic interconnected “fabric of life” to the universe, enabled by human symbolic capacity, or Peirce’s concept of relations.
