Abstract:
This chapter argues that certain important lessons about truth can only be appreciated by approaching semantic circularity from the perspective of a compositional semanticist. It explains our need for a compositional semantics for semantic vocabulary like ‘true’. These reflections stress the need to explain, consistently with linguistic productivity facts, truth-value judgments concerning two classes of semantic circularities. The first involves claims like ‘Everything I say today will be true’, made when all other utterances by the speaker that day are true. The second involves claims about broad distributions of semantic properties like ‘A conjunction is true just in case both of its conjuncts are true’. We cannot explain the productive speaker judgments concerning the classes with a theory that gives ‘true’ an extension assignment as part of its semantic value. The chapter explains what shape semantic theories would need to take in order to avoid this circularity.

Abstract:
Semantics is the study of meaning in the linguistic sense, broadly understood, rather than in the sense of existential significance. The study of religion seeks to understand exactly what religious adherents believe, do, desire, contemplate, exhort, command, require, represent, or communicate to themselves and others. Scholars of religion also typically seek to explain why religious persons and groups do what they do, believe what they believe, etc. Thus both main tasks of the discipline presuppose that its data are things that carry semantic significance—that they mean something rather than something else, and that there are better and worse ways of capturing those meanings. This chapter describes some of the main positions in philosophical semantics, explains that they should not be ignored by the serious scholar of religion, and points to a few examples of how paying attention to them have clear practical utility for the study of religion.

Abstract:
This article introduces some of the basic concepts and issues of computational semantics and briefly compares two models of semantic representation, which have been proposed in the literature, and considers the ways in which each of them deals with the syntax-semantics interface. It then shows the contrast between the general approach to the syntax-semantics interface, which is common to most systems of computational semantics, and an alternative view that characterizes Chomsky's derivational view of syntax on the other. Furthermore, it focuses on the possibility of using underspecified representations of meaning while still sustaining a systematic relation between the meaning of an expression and the meanings of its constituents. It briefly looks at the move from static to dynamic theories of meaning in an attempt to model the interpretation of utterances in discourse and dialogue.
