Abstract:

In intelligent e-learning systems that adapt a learning and teaching process to student knowledge, it is important to adapt the system as quickly as possible. However, adaptation is not possible until the student model is initialized. In this paper, a new approach to student model initialization using domain knowledge representative subset is described. The approach defines which concepts from domain knowledge should be included in the initial test so the system can make conclusions about what students truly know about domain knowledge. This representative subset of domain knowledge is defined using non-semantic mathematical approach based on graph theory. The initial test, created over a domain knowledge representative subset, guarantees encompassing all concepts that are relevant to domain knowledge. A two-level case study is conducted on what would be the representative subset of one selected domain knowledge. It compares semantically selected domain knowledge representative subsets (semantical analysis was done by domain area experts) to a non-semantical, mathematically selected domain knowledge representative subset. The results of the case study show that problems of inequality of semantically selected domain knowledge representative subsets are easily overcome using the presented approach.

Abstract:

Justification stit logic is a logic for reasoning about proving as a certain kind of activity, namely seeing to it that a proof is publicly available. It merges the semantical analysis of deliberatively seeing-to-it-that from stit theory (Belnap, Perloff, Xu 2001) and the semantics of the epistemic logic with justification from (Artemov and Nogina 2005). In this paper, after recalling its language and basic semantical definitions, various ramifications and refinements of justification stit logic are presented and discussed: imposing natural restrictions upon the class of models under consideration, making use of modalities that assert the existence of a proof, introducing a variant of justification stit logic based on a semantics introduced by M. Fitting, and adding variable-binding operators and extending the set of proof polynomials.

Abstract:

The notion of forgetting, as considered in the famous paper by Lin and Reiter in 1994 has been extensively studied in classical logic and more recently, in non-monotonic formalisms like logic programming. In this paper, we convey the idea of forgetting to another major AI formalism, namely Dung-style argumentation frameworks. Our approach is axiomatic-driven and not limited to any specific semantics: we propose semantical and syntactical desiderata encoding different criteria for what forgetting an argument might mean; analyze how these criteria relate to each other; and check whether the criteria can be satisfied in general. The analysis is done for a number of widely used argumentation semantics. Our investigation shows that almost all desiderata are individually satisfiable. However, combinations of semantical and/or syntactical conditions reveal a much more interesting landscape. For instance, we found that the ad hoc approach to forgetting an argument, i.e., by the syntactical removal of the argument and all of its associated attacks, is too restrictive and only compatible with the two weakest semantical desiderata. Amongst the several interesting combinations identified, we showed that one satisfies a notion of minimal change and presented an algorithm that given an AF F and argument x, constructs a suitable AF G satisfying the conditions in the combination.

The research aimed to find out the meaning of dancer movements in tradition of Mappadendang in Wajo, South Sulawesi. Mappadendang is one of tradition after harverst as gratitude to God. Mappdendang perform by 4 women and 3 men that pounding the rice. When the dancer pounding the rice by using pestle (alu) and mortar (palungeng). The result of punding the rice sounds “dendang”. That sounds called for Buginese tribe is mappadendang. In this research, the writer used a descriptive qualitative method to found and analyzed data. The writer analyzed and observed the location and interviewed some informants who can and able perform tradition of mappadendang, in Wajo, South Sulawesi, and also used some tools which has related with the research. The meaning of dancer movements in mappadendang has there are many meaning. Inside of dancer movement we can found the spiritual meaning, the meaning of sense, social meaning and entertainment meaning. The main movement in this tradition is expression gratitude to God. It describe for the believe’s society in Wajo always preserve their tradition to got blessed from God. The main purpose of mappadendang for the society has been given many positive impacts such us keep the relationship between society of Wajo, the event to looking for a partner and increase the result of harverst. Those impacts made the society of Wajo always perform this tradition.

Summary Objectives: This paper aims at introducing a novel approach for segmentation of overlapping objects and at demonstrating its applicability to medical images. Methods: This work details a novel approach enhancing the known theory of full-segmentation of an image into regions by lifting it to a semantic segmentation into objects. Our theory allows the formal description of partitioning an image into regions on the first level and allowing the occurrence of overlaps and occlusions of objects on a second, semantic level. Possible applications for the use of this ‘semantical segmentation‘ are the analysis of radiographs and micrographs. We demonstrate our approach by the example of segmentation and separation of overlapping cervical cells and cell clusters on a set of 787 image pairs of registered PAP- and DAPI-stained micrographs. The semantical cell segmentation yielding areas of cell plasmas and nuclei are compared to a manual segmentation of the same images, where 2212 cells have been labeled. A direct comparison of over and under-segmentation between the two segmentation sets yields a mean difference value of 10.15% for the nuclei and 10.80% for the plasma. Results: Using the proposed theory of semantical segmentation of images in combination with adequate models of the image contents, our approach allows identifying, separating and distinguishing several overlapping, occluding objects in medical images. Applying the proposed theory to the application of cervical cell segmentation from overlapping cell clusters and aggregates, it can be seen that it is possible to formally describe the complex image contents. Conclusions: The proposed method of semantical segmentation is a mighty tool and under the assumption of the subtractive transparency model can be used in different medical image processing applications such as radiology and microscopy. By using alternative models to solve the ambiguities attached to overlaps and occlusions, further fields of application can be addressed.

Abstract This study offers a first computer-aided semantical analysis of Chinese climate change news discourse. It explored the validity and productivity of the automatic Lancaster Semantic Analysis System (USAS). While USAS has been well tested in a number of studies for the English language and that the system has various language versions, its Chinese version has not been explored sufficiently in applied linguistics and cross-lingual and cross-cultural studies. The Chinese variation of USAS (CH_USAS) was instrumental in the statistical data modelling and construction of a data-driven analytical model for Chinese climate change news discourse. The model testing produced a mixed result which revealed both the efficiency and areas for improvement of this useful automatic cross-lingual semantic analysis system including the development and compilation of high-quality and updated English-Chinese bilingual terminologies for cross-lingual and cross-cultural environmental studies.

Abstract:

The article deals with the problem of relation of two linguistic categories – interrogativity and text cohesion – in a literary text. The aim of the research is to study the role of ‘why’ questions in text cohesion in Waterland by G. Swift. As part of the study, a database of interrogative contexts was formed, which includes general questions, special questions and disjunctive questions. Methods of semantic analysis, stylistic analysis, contextual analysis, syntactical analysis were used in the research process. The paper provides the results of analysis conducted to reveal the functions of ‘why’ questions in text cohesion on the micro-level (lexical and semantical cohesion, syntactical cohesion) and macro-level (plot and composition, imagery, themes and idea) of the literary text. There were found means of text cohesion such as lexical and syntactical repetitions. On the level of lexis, such various types of repetition were discovered as complete lexical repetition, partial repetition, synonymic and antonymic repetition, deixis, repetition of the interrogative adverb ‘why’. On the level of syntax, the analysis demonstrates a tendency to formal incompleteness of interrogative structures, on the one hand, which allows us to assume an implicit type of text cohesion, and, on the other hand, a tendency to formal complexity of interrogative structures, with parenthetic clauses, adverbial participial phrases and homogeneous parts of the sentence being frequently used. Stylistic analysis of ‘why’ questions shows that anaphora, antithesis, syntactical parallelism, parenthesis, ellipsis and aposiopesis are among the means of text cohesion in the text under consideration. The analysis of the novel on the macro-level demonstrates that ‘why’ questions function in the plot development, facilitate semantical cohesion between chapters, form thematical and conceptual unity of the literary text, and serve to promote the unity of imagery. The author concludes that ‘why’ questions facilitate the processes of semantical and syntactical compression, which are considered the main mechanisms of text production.

The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative method. The source of data in this research was the Newspaper, named Palopo Pos Newspaper. The data are collected from the advertisement in Palopo Pos Newspaper from January until December 2013 edition and 2014 edition. In analyzing the data, the writer used semantical analysis by using Geoffrey Leech’s Theory. It aimed at finding out the kinds and the meaning of advertisement in Palopo Pos Newspaper, then the writer analyzed and explain the data from the newspaper. The result of this research showed that there were six kinds of advertisement was found. There were costumer, financial, business, trade, recruitment and retail advertisement.Whereas there were seven kinds of meaning in advertisement was found. There were social, affective, connotative, conceptual, collocative, thematic and reflected meaning. The purpose of this research is to give understanding about the kinds and the meaning of advertisement used semantical analysis by using Geoffrey Leech’s Theory to readers or the next researchers who would like to know and research more about it.

Abstract:

The article deals with a topical problem of general semasiology, namely the investigation of phenomenon of semantical development regularity in the vocabulary of two groups into Indo-European genetic family of languages. The approach with regard to analysis of semantics with taking into account of coverage of several lexical-and-semantic systems enables a researcher to imagine a fuller picture about extension of lingual phenomena and gives the solid ground for synthesis. Especially interesting is observing the vocabulary of languages, whose speakers are bearers of different cultures, including cultures and traditions of communication. Typological analogies in semantics of communication of ethnic groups, which have different cultures, indicate either typology of language thinking or implementation of common patterns, which have been formed in the epoch of the Proto-Indo-European language, either language contacts in different times. Lexicon of Iranian and Slavic languages is used as the object of observing because it hasn’t been widely devised in the aspect of its comparative semasiological description and highlighting of typologically common peculiarities in correlation of basic and derivative meanings. Preliminary observing entitles the author to highlight the semasiological parallels: 1) role-play situation when a child should be found on the road as a way to trick death, which hunting down all newborns in the family; 2) conferring of symbolic importance to a knot, tying, which can be taken as an agreement, an oath, a vow for consolidating all subjects of legal relationship; 3) very close link of hand with the idea of help (perhaps, also in ritual sense). Other semasiological parallels: human desire to reflect in lexical semantics the objects of environment by the way of comparison these with body parts; traces of an archaic view on relations between family members through blood, saved in semantics; change verba facere - verba dicere; figurative usage of the verbs with etymological meaning ʻsway, rockʼ as ʻgoʼ, ʻwolk, strollʼ; implementation of semantical potential to denote something useless through caritive prefix and root with meaning ʻcase, thingʼ; change ʻsweep, broomʼ - ʻstealʼ and ʻsweep, broomʼ - ʻchase awayʼ and other.

Abstract:

Purpose: The purpose of this Article is to show that the Javanese circumfix {sa- + -é} is one of the Javanese affixes that can be attached to more than one part of speech, namely adjective, adverb and noun. It has a relatively high frequency in terms of its usage. The analysis of this article focuses on the use of circumfix {sa- + -é} in terms of morphology, syntax, and semantics. Methodology: Javanese circumfix found in Javanese culture was analyzed according to morphological, syntactical and semantical approach Results: In Javanese, the circumfix {sa- + -é} is added partly on the left and partly on the right of the base morpheme. Such a kind of morphological process is known as confixation, or simulfixation, or circumfixation. Implications: Thus, the entire analysis describes what the circumfix {sa- + -é} can do to the base morphemes particularly in the Javanese language. Many of the derivatives formed by the attachment of the circumfix may function as the opener of the subordinate clause expressing adverbs of time.

Abstract:

There is a close link between culture and language. Phraseological units reflect the world view of definite nation, and the idioms with phytonyms make one of the biggest groups of phraseological units. Plants are an inseparable part of human life. They are used for making food, clothes and shelter; moreover, they play an important role in understanding of religious, symbolic, aesthetic components of culture. The article discusses the frequency of use of various phytonyms in English, Russian an Azerbaijan languages. Some idioms with phytonyms have the precise equivalents which lexical, grammatical and semantical structure coincide in these three languages, but most of such kind of idioms lack the precise equivalents, and while translating the most important thing is to preserve their semantics, expressiveness and imagery. The article also provides information about the origin of some of the idiomatic expressions with phytonyms. Abstract Todd (2016) proposes an analysis of future-directed sentences, in particular sentences of the form ‘will()’, that is based on the classic Russellian analysis of definite descriptions. Todd’s analysis is supposed to vindicate the claim that the future is metaphysically open while retaining a simple Ockhamist semantics of future contingents and the principles of classical logic, i.e. bivalence and the law of excluded middle. Consequently, an open futurist can straightforwardly retain classical logic without appeal to supervaluations, determinacy operators, or any further controversial semantical or metaphysical complication. In this paper, we will show that this quasi-Russellian analysis of ‘will’ both lacks linguistic motivation and faces a variety of significant problems. In particular, we show that the standard arguments for Russell's treatment of definite descriptions fail to apply to statements of the form ‘will()’.

Abstract:

This qualitative study focuses on the semantical interpretation of the post-electoral newspaper reporting in gaining the legitimacy from the citizens. The study is being addressed through two research questions: 1) what are the semantical interpretation of the newspaper articles’ headlines in the mainstream and the oppositions’ newspapers? 2) What are the issues highlighted in the newspaper during the post-electoral period of the 13th General Election? The data for the entire research were obtained through the mainstream newspapers which are Utusan Malaysia, Kosmo and Harian Metro and also the opposition’s newspaper represented by Harakah. The data were also collected based on the newspapers that were published after the Election Day has ended. However, the newspapers were not collected daily as the researcher has chosen a few newspapers that contained the traits of having portrayed electoral campaign. The data were analysed using the thematic analysis by deriving themes from the content analysis of the newspapers. The findings were divided into two sections which are semantical interpretations of newspaper articles’ headlines during post-electoral period and issues highlighted in the political campaigns. The researcher has come to a conclusion that both mainstream and opposition based newspapers were portraying improper political headlines during the post-electoral period.

Abstract:

The paper considers the pragmatic textual level and focuses on peculiarities of reasoning realized in the lyric verses written by the representatives of Russian classic poetry. The investigated material of poetic texts includes the verses written by A.K. Tolstoy, K.K. Sluchevsky, and I.F. Annensky. The purposes of the study involve adapting the rhetorical structure theory (RST) to poetic texts, annotating these texts, searching for regularities of poetic reasoning specific to the considered authors. Applying RST to poetic texts was a novel task; the lack of experience made it necessary to adapt the method, that is, to elaborate the adequate set of rhetorical relations and to specify two sets of criteria: segmenting a text and identifying the relations. The resulting set of relations consists of 34 items. After annotating the texts in terms of the adopted RST, several lines of comparison were the objects of investigation. They include collating the frequency spectrums of relations and the semantical groups of relations for the three authors, as well as comparing two periods of creativity for A.K. Tolstoy and K.K. Sluchevsky. The results of the comparative investigation revealed certain regularities both in the distribution of isolated relations and the distribution of semantically grouped relations.

The article is devoted to the semantic-syntactical structure of the appositive phrase in the Ukrainian language. The term “double name”is used for the demonstration of semantical parameteres of the apposition phrase. Two levels of syntactic analysis are considered: abstract-grammatical level (internal structure of the appositive word-combinations) and concrete-grammatical level (the function in sentence structure). The concrete-grammatical analysis indicates that appositional phrases in the sentence are: syntactically indivisible components that serve as a simple part of the sentence (subject, object). The conflict arises between formal analyticity and functional syntheticity. This conflict is caused by nominative features of double name (compound nouns indicates the same subject of objective reality). Therefore they can be referred to as the type of lexical (stable) word-combinations. Abstract-grammatical analysis leads to the conclusion that internal structure of the appositional phrase can express different semantic-syntactical relations between nouns: appositional relations or mutual appositional relations. The mutual appositional relations are peculiar to the majority of stylistically neutral double names. O. Peshkovskiy wrote about mutual relations between nouns. The differentiation of two relation types was done with the help of the semantic principle and predicate transformation method.

In this paper, we discuss the question of discourse markers (DM) – a category conceived differently by theoretical and applied linguistic approaches. Unlike in applied approaches, in which DMs are considered desemantized/grammaticalized lexical units devoid of their own semantics and therefore of status in the language, we consider DMs to constitute a full-fledged category of language, having its own semantics and distribution, both of which play a crucial role in the construction of discourse (Paillard 2011, 2012; Franckel 2008, 2019). This hypothesis has been developed in theoretical linguistics and has seen little evidence from a perspective of the acquisition and didactics of foreign languages. Based on cross-analysis of linguistic theories (Benveniste 1974; Ducrot 1980; Hopper & Traugott 1993; Culioli 1990,1999; Franckel & Paillard 2008) and on distributional analysis of data of the spoken corpora, we show that the absence of specific linguistic status for DMs has repercussions at the didactic and acquisition levels: DMs are generally approached in an ad hoc manner, all functions combined, which leads on the one hand to gaps in the acquisition of French and, on the other hand, to the ambiguity of criteria for evaluation. Therefore, at the level of applied linguistics, we suggest the integration of DMs in the learning path as a full category, an integration that must be carried out on several axes – semantic, syntax and prosodic – and be based on an authentic oral corpora of the spoken language. At the theoretical level, we use transversal analysis in order to give yet another argument in favor of a semantical-enunciative approach to discursive markers.

Conflicting information in an agent's knowledge base may lead to a semantical defect, that is, a situation where it is impossible to draw any plausible conclusion. Finding out the reasons for the observed inconsistency (so-called diagnoses) and/or restoring consistency in a certain minimal way (so-called repairs) are frequently occurring issues in knowledge representation and reasoning. In this article we provide a series of first results for these problems in the context of abstract argumentation theory regarding the two most important reasoning modes, namely credulous as well as sceptical acceptance. Our analysis includes the following problems regarding minimal repairs/diagnoses: existence, verification, computation of one and enumeration of all solutions. The latter problem is tackled with a version of the so-called hitting set duality first introduced by Raymond Reiter in 1987. It turns out that grounded semantics plays an outstanding role not only in terms of complexity, but also as a useful tool to reduce the search space for diagnoses regarding other semantics.

The most productive strategy to improve students' ability to write is to have direct and as much as possible teacher input. However, the workload of the teacher is greatly increased. Automated systems are increasingly required to help students write essays. In the field of educational assessment technology, automated test evaluation is becoming more and more common. We present a framework that is modelled on the programme, following which the school-teachers in the BPDAV School and Govt. High School Hyderabad, Telangana, India present the automatic evaluator of student essays in the Telugu language. Language skills; the structure of the essay and the contents that fit the subject are the principal requirements for evaluating the essays. In this context, we have established a scheme focused on latent semantical analysis and the theory of rhetorical structure. The method has been evaluated in more than 600 different essays, written in different manuscripts by schoolchildren. Overall 0.82 with the teacher's assessment was achieved in our method.

GIS integrates spatial information and spatial analysis. An important example of such integration is for emergency response which requires route planning inside and outside of a building. Route planning requires detailed information related to indoor and outdoor environment. Indoor navigation network models including Geometric Network Model (GNM), Navigable Space Model, sub-division model and regular-grid model lack indoor data sources and abstraction methods. In this paper, a hybrid indoor space model is proposed. In the proposed method, 3D modeling of indoor navigation network is based on surveying control points and it is less dependent on the 3D geometrical building model. This research proposes a method of indoor space modeling for the buildings which do not have proper 2D/3D geometrical models or they lack semantic or topological information. The proposed hybrid model consists of topological, geometrical and semantical space.

Improving the processes of public administration is impossible without studying the theoretical foundations of these processes, without defining the appropriate categories of public administration. A special place among them is occupied by the concept of the "mechanism of public administration". Without disclosing its essence, it is impossible to solve the problem of improving the efficiency of public administration mechanisms and, accordingly, the efficiency of the entire system of public administration. Aim and tasks. Conduct a semantic analysis of existing definitions of "public administration mechanism" in the context of a systems approach. Research results. The presence of perfect mechanisms of public administration provides purposeful, coordinated, and rational management of social and economic processes in the country, the appropriate level of organizational and managerial influence on the development of all spheres of life, sustainable support of public authorities by various segments of the population. Many researchers use the category "system" when defining the concept of the "mechanism of public administration". According to this view, the system: has a purpose; is a set of interconnected elements; its elements act as lower-order systems; can be represented in different aspects and at different levels; forms a special unity with the external environment. The article compares the formal representation of the concept of "system" with the existing definitions of the concept of "mechanism of public administration". Today in the literature there is no single point of view on the definition of "mechanism of public administration". Some authors define it as a system of state bodies organized in accordance with certain principles for the implementation of public administration tasks, the second - as part of the management system that provides influence on the factors on which the result of the management object depends, the third - as a democratic state organization of managerial influence on social processes, fourth - as a way of organizing and functioning of management based on the establishment of reasonable goals, fifth - as a set of practical measures, tools, levers, and incentives by which public authorities influence any public relationships in order to achieve goals. There are other points of view. This situation is the result of the fact that the study of the concept of "mechanism of public administration" is carried out on the basis of different methodological principles, in different fields of science, and with different research objectives. In this case, each of the definitions enriches the understanding of this phenomenon, but none of them, even in combination, does not provide an exhaustive description of the concept of the "mechanism of public administration. Conclusion. None of the definitions of the term "mechanism of public administration" considered in the article fully corresponds to the formal definition of the term "system". At the same time, each component of the formal representation of the term "system" is present in one or another definition of the "mechanism of public administration".

Thisi research is a kind of a research focusing on linguistic which uses semiotic in order to find out what lies behind the content of a children’s story. The subject of this research is an ancient story of a Japanese children called mukashi banashi. It comes with the title of Urashima Taro which has been translated into Indonesia Language. Through semiotic analysis, the story may be conducted in a syntaxical and semantical way. According to syntax analysis, there are two episodes in the story. In this first episode Urashima Taro becomes the subject of the research while in the latte, the turtle is the subject. We may learn that the story plott and the flow of the story have gone through a flashback process. In the structure or “batih”, it is known that the story has a complex relationship due to its expansion plot. Based on the semantic analysis, it is also know that the main/lead character of the story is Urashima Taro and the other characters are Urashima Taro’s mother and the queen. The morale message of the whole story is dedicated to all children reading it.

This paper discusses the framework of conceptual semantics and its methodological solutions for the semantic analysis. The conceptual semantics theory, based on the ideas of Ray Jackendoff, strives for an integration of the psychological reality of linguistic information with other linguistic faculties. The article discusses the central theoretical assumptions and aims of this theory and also gives a brief presentation of the basic methodology of Urpo Nikanne’s tiernet model of conceptual semantics. The tiernet technology is the basis for the analysis of the lexical conceptual structure of the Finnish neutral motion verbs mennä ‘go’ and lähteä ‘go from a place’ as well as of the Estonian counterpart minema ‘go’. Abstract:

Smart cities are applied to an increasing number of application fields. This evolution though urges data collection and integration, hence major issues arise that need to be tackled. One of the most important challenges is the heterogeneity of collected data, especially if those data derive from different standards and vary in terms of geometry, topology and semantics. Another key challenge is the efficient analysis and visualization of spatial data, which due to the complexity of the physical reality in modern world, 2D GIS struggles to cope with. So, in order to facilitate data analysis and enhance the role of smart cities, the 3rd dimension needs to be implemented. Standards such as CityGML and IFC fulfill that necessity but they present major differences in their schemas that render their integration a challenging task. This paper focuses on addressing those differences, examining the up to date research work and investigates an alternative methodology in order to bridge the gap between those Standards. Within this framework, a generic IFC model is generated and converted to a CityGML Model, which is validated and evaluated on its geometrical correctness and semantical coherence. General results as well as future research considerations are presented.

Recently, Semantic Annotations for WSDL (SAWSDL) standard emerged as a W3C recommendation to add semantics to WSDL components. SAWSDL annotates WSDL components with different semantics in order to automate Web service tasks, such as service discovery, composition, mediation, and invocation. In fact, certain service task requires a specific service semantic that semantically describes the service. As a result, several tools and techniques have emerged to allow users to get maximum advantage of semantic Web service by implementing SAWSDL. This paper analyzes SAWSDL standard. The relationships between SAWSDL and WSDL components were revealed. The direct relationships between SAWSDL components and service tasks through service semantics were investigated and reported. This paper also reviews some well-known tools that are used for SAWSDL implementation.

We identify a class of paradoxes that is neither set-theoretical nor semantical, but that seems to depend on intensionality. In particular, these paradoxes arise out of plausible properties of propositional attitudes and their objects. We try to explain why logicians have neglected these paradoxes, and to show that, like the Russell Paradox and the direct discourse Liar Paradox, these intensional paradoxes are recalcitrant and challenge logical analysis. Indeed, when we take these paradoxes seriously, we may need to rethink the commonly accepted methods for dealing with the logical paradoxes.

Võrdlus lähtub hispaania keele modaalverbist poder, vaadeldes selle episteemilise kasutuse tõlkevasteid ilukirjandusteostes. Analüüsi aluseks on episteemilise modaalsuse tähendusala täpsem määratlemine. Prototüüpset kõnelejakeskset (subjektiivset) võimalikkushinnangut eristatakse objektiivsest situatsioonilisest võimalikkusest, mis on episteemilise/mitte-episteemilise modaalsuse piiripealne vaheaste. See eristus võimaldab modaalverbide tähendusalasid paremini eritleda ja omavahel kontrastiivses vaates suhestada, kirjeldada episteemilise võimalikkuse semantikat modaaltähenduste kontiinumi skaalal selle olemuslikus seoses mitte-episteemiliste tähendusvaldkondadega ning vaadelda modaalverbe neile omase mitmetähenduslikkuse perspektiivist. Prototüüpne episteemiline tähendus esineb nii poder’i kui ka võima semantikas sulamina koos objektiivse situatsioonilise tähendusega ning näib analüüsitud materjali põhjal olevat viimase kõrval nõrgem tähendus. Samas näib subjektiivsel hinnangulisusel olevat võima semantikas suurem roll kui poder’i puhul. Saama semantikas panen prototüüpse episteemilise tähenduse kahtluse alla; saama näib ühemõtteliselt väljendavat objektiivset situatsioonilist võimalikkust. Triin Lõbus: Possibility in the semantics of the Spanish modal verb poder and the Estonian modal verbs saama and võima. Analysis of translation equivalents. This article deals with epistemic modality in the semantics of the modal verbs of possibility in Spanish and Estonian. The contrastive analysis is centred on the Spanish modal verb poder in its epistemic use and explores the translation equivalences appearing in a corpus of literary texts. The analysis is based on a narrower definition of the semantic domain of epistemic modality. The prototypical speaker-oriented (subjective) modality judgement is differentiated from the objective situational possibility, the last one being a border case between the areas of epistemic and nonepistemic modality. This distinction makes it possible to better differentiate between different meaning areas of the modal verbs and to establish their relationships to each other in a contrastive perspective, to describe the semantics of the epistemic possibility along the continuum of modal meanings in its inherent connection with non-epistemic meaning areas, and to observe the modal verbs from the perspective of the semantic ambiguity characteristic of them. In the semantics of poder as well as of võima, prototypical epistemic meaning merges with the objective situational meaning and, according to the material analysed here, seems to be the less prominent of the two meanings. At the same time, the meaning of a subjective judgement seems to have a more important part in the semantics of võima compared to that of poder. As for saama, the prototypical epistemic meaning is called into question here: saama seems to unequivocally express objective situational possibility. The article suggests that objectivity is what also defines the semantics of saama in a wider range of modal meanings: in case of saama possibility is not expressed as participant’s agentivity (or speaker’s subjectivity) oriented but as conceptualized from the perspective of situational circumstances.Keywords: epistemic modality; possibility; subjectivity; modal verbs; Estonian, Spanish
