Abstract:
I propose that self-duality in quantum phase-space provides the criteria for the selection of the quantum gravity vacuum. The evidence for this assertion arises from two independent considerations. The first is the phenomenological success of the free fermionic heterotic-string models, which are constructed in the vicinity of the self-dual point under T-duality. The relation between the free fermionic models and the underlying Z2×Z2 toroidal orbifolds is discussed. Recent analysis revealed that the Z2×Z2 free fermionic orbifolds utilize an asymmetric shift in the reduction to three generations, which indicates that the untwisted geometrical moduli are fixed near the self-dual point. The second consideration arises from the recent formulation of quantum mechanics from an equivalence postulate and its relation to phase-space duality. In this context it is demonstrated that the trivial state, with V(q)=E=0, is identified with the self-dual state under phase-space duality. These observations suggest a more general mathematical principle in operation. In physical systems that exhibit a duality structure, the self-dual states under the given duality transformations correspond to critical points.

Abstract:
Through the correct assembly of various types of Plate Self-Locking Nuts, and their related mechanical properties test, on the premise of that Floating Two Lug Plate Self-Locking Nu, Floating Plate Self-Locking Nut, Cherry Rivetless Self-Locking Nut Plate, and Retainer Rivetless Plate Self-Locking Nut can satisfy the procurement specifications, use the same load levels on above four kinds of Plate Self-Locking Nuts to implement resisting shear connectors fatigue comparison test, and provide the basis for the selection of the Rivetless Plate Self-Locking Nut and its utilization in aircraft fatigue critical region. The results show that with the experimental study of four kinds of plate floating self-locking nut, the overall performance is relatively good to Floating Plate Self-Locking Nut and Retainer Rivetless Plate Self-Locking Nut, both of the two kind of Self-Locking Nuts plate can meet the requirements of the mechanical properties to Plate Self-Locking Nut, and their fatigue performance is greatly improved as opposed to the Floating Two Lug Plate Self-Locking Nut. Since the studied Plate Self-Locking Nuts are already used to aircraft in a larger amount, the study could be applied to various aircraft design and selection of the Plate Self-Locking Nut.

Abstract:
This study directly examines the possibility of pre-existing differences between undergraduate students who choose to take service-learning classes compared to those who do not. Foremost among the findings, on most measures there was no significant effect of self-selection. However, students who chose a hypothetical course with a service-learning component reported higher civic responsibility and civic action scores, and reported lower socioeconomic status and greater enjoyment of past service learning than those who chose the hypothetical course without the service-learning component. Challenges and opportunities related to random assignment within service-learning research are discussed.

Abstract:
The self-organizing map (SOM) algorithm for finite data is derived as an approximate maximum a posteriori estimation algorithm for a gaussian mixture model with a gaussian smoothing prior, which is equivalent to a generalized deformable model (GDM). For this model, objective criteria for selecting hyperparameters are obtained on the basis of empirical Bayesian estimation and cross-validation, which are representative model selection methods. The properties of these criteria are compared by simulation experiments. These experiments show that the cross-validation methods favor more complex structures than the expected log likelihood supports, which is a measure of compatibility between a model and data distribution. On the other hand, the empirical Bayesian methods have the opposite bias.
